    You have to love an old R model Mack! They are definitely a working man's truck. They aren't there to say "Hey!, everybody look at me with my goofy oversized visor and other silliness". Nope, its there to get the job done and on to the next with no nonsense.

    Great video, love the old Mack and FiatAllis. I really enjoy your channel with all the old iron. Reminds me a lot of the equipment my Grandpa had in the 70s for his road construction company., Albeit he run all Terex and Cat scrapers. I think his biggest ones were 657s, which my Great Uncle says could haul 7 tandem dump truck loads of dirt and go 50mph down the road, because they were too big to haul around. Neat to see an old FA (as my friend Ray calls them, Flat Allison) still around, not many still kicking and making a buck.

      Here on the west coast, with the big single engine scrapers, they would haul the front end on a dolly connected to the fifth wheel and let the rear wheels roll on the road when they transported it could only go like 45 mph because the rear ends would bounce like crazy on the pavement

  • @jasonbuck489

    I spent A LOT of Hours on those Old Pans.... We almost never Hauled them... We had a Big Beam Trailer and Blocking them up and Chaining them was a pain, but not as bad as Goofing Around trying to get Permits... Im here in Pa... Most of the time we would just Drive the daggone things from Job to Job... The were the Big Twin Engine CAT's and they would Run down the Road 40 plus MPH, Bouncing, Lashing, and Wriggling the whole way... Haha!

    • @AppalachianRust

      Yep we have a 627 Cat we need to move. We’ve got a bigger trailer for that monster. Don’t run any of them much anymore though.
      We have driven them a lot down the road, thought about doing it here, but was afraid it might blow a hose out on the road. And it did as soon as we got it off the trailer at the job site.

    I learned in a 79 R Model in 83 hauling track loaders, dozers, paddle pans, excavators and paving equipment . Was a great opportunity to learn what I did then. The license was a chauffeur's then and no written tests required. Was a great time in my life at 22 years old. The company had a 72 DM but it was a very rough ride, it was originally sold for a concrete mixer but they bought it to pull a lowboy, it didn't have a lot of power but definitely pulled the loads.

    That old equipment reminds me back when i ran our lowboy. I use to haul 621 cat. Pans on our 35 ton eager beaver trailer. I never had to put blocks under the front wheels. I just backed them on and put the bowl down on the beaver tail and let the back wheels hang off the back. Looked bad but i never had any fall off.

    Cant remember the last time I've seen a Fiat Allis in person, rare machines nowadays.
    Those 903s were either loved or hated. They were real bad for electrolysis and hydro locking. One had to take extra care that the coolant had the proper additives.
    They do sound great though especially with a turbo.

    • @Bob-j5o3b
      @Bob-j5o3b 3 місяці тому +1

      I like them but like just about all engines, they have their peculiarities that need to be taken care of. We added a coolant filter to ours that didn't previously have one and that along with the correct coolant, treated it and we no longer had electrolysis problems.

    Marvelous video. @fourbanger's "Fat Alice" comment is good. @fourbanger is talking about the fact that before Fiat jumped over their heads into the earth moving scene, these big machines and everything from dozers to backhoe/loaders were made by Allis-Chalmers in West Allis, Wisconsin (Milwaukee).. A-C blew it by selling themselves to Fiat. The Italians bumped up against Caterpillar and John Deere and had to run back to Italy to focus on fast cars that fall apart. Old Allis Chalmers was left to turn into dust.

    Not too many of us around keeping the old macks and equipment around that are younger. Over winter i should have videoed my work for the farm, 300 twin stick rd686 with 56000# rears. I drove it daily 10 years ago to the feed grinder in muncy. Did 2 wheel seals and the 300 dropped 2 exhaust valves in 5&6. And bent all 6 pushrods in the rear head. Damaged pistons and cylinder head. Parts are not as easy to find anymore good used. Can still get some parts new or nos. New heads are dear tho.$ 1400 bare. Most trucks that age were scrapped years ago in the scrap yards near me in pa. The old allis peaks me too. I have a 38 unstyled wc. Allis was sold off in the 70s and bounced around until agco acuired the name. I dont think they are in construction anymore. They used to be a leading mfg of almost everything imagined especially construction. They were right there in the 40s and 50s with case and cat.

    The 903 Cummins is a mystery. It was good for over 1.000.000 miles and yet Cummins dropped it. Then 20 years later it reappears in the Armies Bradley fighting vehicle. Cummins is a poorly managed company. Im amazed they havent gone broke with some of the dumass things they have done.
