The 358 Peterbilt was built from 1968 onwards. Very stable vehicle and learned to drive on a copy of the Soviet Union made in the Ukraine, the Kraz, in the military. G5, Kraz and Ural were the vehicles we used back then. Laugh, you can see where you bought one. In 1976, I drove a longer 358 Peterbilt myself, after I had changed and crossed the border. My boss at the time had one as a replacement vehicle. Normally we drove the MAN Büssing, the Scania and quite honestly the Scania 140 was the best truck I ever drove. Good luck Rick, take good care of the truck, it will always serve you well. Stay healthy and stay the way you are. Greetings from Grankfurt. Gerold

No power steering, transmission, you learned to shift gears, always pay attention to the revs so that the machine didn't run away. It wasn't for nothing that he became a driver. Smile, only with strong arms could you drive in the mountains, with lots of bends and backwards, always looking in the mirror, or something was in the way.
What a project. There's a soft spot in my heart for those old Screamin Demons. I don't know that they were ever very good in a truck but always heard they were great in stationary power applications. Just wind em up and let em scream! Very cool engines regardless of how good or bad they were. I overhauled a 4-71 once and couldn't believe how worn out it was yet still seemed to run fine. I'd love to own one in a truck.
@@blythkd9017 A work truck I drove had a 4-71 , the truck weighed 35000 pounds , had an Allison automatic , I just pushed the pedal to the floor anytime I wanted it to move , but it would do 72 miles an hour on the straights , but only the first straight , if I slowed down at all and floored it again it would only go back up to 70 , but it always ran fine .

You guys outdo yourselves EVERY video. This truck is a dream truck, thanks for taking us along !! And i don't care, I can tell De-niros excited about working on this gem !!
Nice, if you could have pressurized the jug, it would have lit off much faster. I had a 8V92 runaway on me this past winter. It was screaming hard it was on an air start used to start aircraft. Ain't no throttle by wire in them old trucks! Love the video, I'm giving the starter and batteries a moment of silence!

Got to drive and wrench on some old stuff that people my age hardly know about. The twin sticks, two stroke Detroits, split rear ends, and the old school 13 come to mind. If there was money in ag I'd still be there but in my area it's rough. I consider myself pretty lucky being able to drive that old stuff, and I got my CDL back when employer training was a thing. Win win in my book. Looking forwards to what you do with this truck. Those two strokes are cool. Keep em wound up and they run. Our old Pete with an 8v92 liked 1900-2100 for peak power.
@6:03 any glass shop will cut you the safety glass windows for that truck, it's just flat glass and they carry flat safety glass in almost every window shop out there you would have to have templates made without the rubbers in to know the exact size and you take it right to them they cut it you bring it back and install it, I myself would not install any class until you have all the paint work or prep work done in the window jams
Yes you can get glass custom cut to the size you need first and then they send it off to have it turned into safety glass. Now automotive front and rear glass is usually layered with plastic sheeting in between and molded together.

Back in the 80's I used to drive a Freightliner with an 8V-71 318hp Detroit diesel. It had a 13 speed trans and 4:11 rear ends. I used to run 4 western states hauling produce. On one trip I was headed down towards Brawley, CA from 29 Palms and I pulled over for the night along the side of the road. When I got up in the morning and started it up it quickly died and would not run. It had lost it's prime. I hitched a ride back into 29 Palms to a truck stop and purchased a quart bottle of gear oil and then got a ride back out to the truck. I used what oil I could in the hubs and dumped the rest on the ground. I found that the bottle would fit through the filler neck of the tank and I cold fill it with diesel. I then broke loose the fuel filters and filled them and then broke loose the fuel line going to the fuel pump and primed it with diesel. The truck fired right up and ran great after that! BY me saying it ran great means that it ran without a problem. It was still gutless as hell. Going up the Grapevine in SoCal I could get out and walk next to the truck! That was a second gear pull. 2 stroke Detroits are great in trains and power plants... they don't belong in trucks! At least the 53 or 71 series. Stay safe!
I drove a 64 Kenworth bed truck back in the early 80's. 318 Detroit with a 5 and 4. It ran away on me once from a stuck injector. Got it running backward another time. It was a learning experience for sure

Thats the first thing you do on those engines , you make sure the throttles arent stuck before starting , and have a board ready to suffocate the Intake .
I’ve never commented on a video before. I was a diesel mechanic when I was younger. I’ve worked a lot on the old two stroke engines. They are constantly dripping oil from the blower drain box. The 892 was very popular especially the silver version. The 871 was your everyday get the job done motor. Back in the day the 892 Silver TTA was the competition for the big CATs on the hills mentioned in all the old country songs that involved truck driving. I have a soft spot for the two strokes. I spent lots of time working on them. And the second most popular was the 855 series Cummins.
Seriously about pissed my pants watching you in the cab with the chair!! Been watching your videos lately, have enjoyed them all! Keep up the good work!
Seriously ? It's starts running away and everybody runs away from the truck. I have never seen anyone do that before. Most people are prepared for it and try to shut it down... The term run away is for the engine, not the people working on it . This video was almost painful to watch between the engine running away, ignoring the locked up brake, and then the "drive". I drove truck for over 40 years, and the first truck I drove was a Kenworth W-900 with an 8V-71. They are gutless, make a lot of noise, leak a lot of oil, and the jakes aren't great either. Ether is your friend with a 318 in cold weather. I did drive a 358 Pete log truck that also had a 318. Fortunately the engine in that truck had some work done to it, so it ran decent back in the day. I absolutely loved that truck... I'm looking forward to seeing the changes. I was a little surprised that you are changing the frame.
Enjoyed the video, before you change too much on Eddie, you need to hook a trailer on and have Deniro back it into a dock. He needs the experience as to why those old steering wheels were so large, before modern power steering. Why all the old time truckers had huge arms.
I’m early in the video. Not sure if you’re going to paint the truck? Paint, or match the tanks with the same paint or patina with stainless straps on the fuel tanks! Just saying! Ronnie East, Tennessee
Ran a 74 Astro for a friend of mine hauling grain was turned abut a bit you shifted at around 2400 to 2500 318 13 speed when you haul out the field heavy you don’t make any money at 4 miles per gallon
Don't forget the old adage about those old jimmies, Check the fuel and fill it with oil. And you could hear them for miles, especially when running straight exhaust. I never seen one run away, but heard many horror stories.
ol2stroker here on youtube can probably help you with any questions or finding parts. Love the truck and looking foreword to seeing what you do with it.
It started with the Roots blower that was originally used for an air pump in the mining industry Long before it was I believe modified by some guys after WW2
Keep doing what you want to do Wrecker Rick!!! I kinda like what @Mr Thang33 said He should be Called "Special ED"!!! I do believe that truck will kick all kinds of ass when you replace frames and give Ole ED a special tune/updates LOL God Bless and keep up the great videos!!!

Enjoyed the video, before you change too much on Eddie, you need to hook a trailer on and have Deniro back it into a dock. He needs the experience as to why those old steering wheels were so large, before modern power steering. Why all the old time truckers had huge arms.
Armstrong steering with a 28in steering wheel and only so much play allowed between pittman and draglink in the old days!
@@akomni-vr5gt try finding a drag link socket today, have not seen one in at least 30 years.
Sorry Wrecker Rick I thought it was a K.W. but I thought of a name for it tell me what you think about Iron Hide I seen Prime video

Screamin Detroit!
Love the recovery man lift!
18:40 😂 everyone ran away
Let the good times roll...
Don't forget the old adage about those old jimmies, Check the fuel and fill it with oil. And you could hear them for miles, especially when running straight exhaust. I never seen one run away, but heard many horror stories.
some had kill cables for protection like the old JOHN DEERE AND ALLIS CHALMERS tractors did. You had to be careful not to over do the rpms
ol2stroker here on youtube can probably help you with any questions or finding parts. Love the truck and looking foreword to seeing what you do with it.
Thank you, I’ll check them out!
Cool to hear it run
It's gonna be cool to see what you do with Eddie. Happy Halloween to you all! (And Deniro!)
It started with the Roots blower that was originally used for an air pump in the mining industry Long before it was I believe modified by some guys after WW2
