- In today's episode of Sound Like, Rabea & Matt re-visit the incredible lead tones of John Frusciante from Red Hot Chili Peppers! With a vintage-influenced tone that allows him to swap seamlessly between funk and rock numbers on-the-fly, Frusciante has crafted himself an immediately recognisable sound. Under the bridge is quite playable without a capo. I didnt even think to use a capo to play it tbh
My understanding is that he didn't play with capo. But would barre the first fret and play it.

Yea definitely they should do me as well I study for John all you need is a DS-2 Ibanez WH-10 v1 or v2 or v3 and a Chorus Pedal and you don't need a Marshall try the stagg 10 ga amp that does the job your never gonna sound 100% like never but I'll never stop working on it
Dave uses mostly inexpensive equipment so that wouldn't make sense

John Mayer himself said he doesn’t enjoy watching people play his songs exactly how he plays them. Use different string different parts of the fretboard different chord shapes. That’s music. William Allison He uses a Vox for his cleans. For the distorted tones he uses a Fender 85 combo, which a solid state amp. Thom Yorke and Ed O'Brien use a Vox AC30 for distorted tones, which sound sick!!!
To clarify, he doesn't get his distortion *from* the 85, he gets it from a Marshall Shredmaster, going into a clean 85 combo, but he only uses the two together, neither without the other

I know I'm really late to the party, but I'm getting back into RHCP and especially trying to cop Frusciante licks so this video is awesome. Love the choice of songs and I think you guys did a good job capturing his sound and licks. My favorite line is about wishing for the white pick guard, and acknowledging that this is sounds like not looks like. Brilliant!

the problem is, 90% of frusciante's tone is from his hands. the total and utter emotion that man put into every single note is on another level. it's more than just pedals and amps.

For Under the Bridge intro, the chord shapes are supposed to be D major in C shape, and F sharp major in E shape

Another awesome vid and without commenting on how well it soulds like JF or not as I'm in no way qualified to do that.. :P One thing I can comment on is all the sounds like vids have the benefit of back and forth commentary, brainstorming about the gear etc and that is exactly what's missing from the David and Goliath vids. The best things about your crew and the amazing content you all provide for us are the personalities and fun around the gear and music. I forget in which one but Capt. Lee even says at one point how they don't want to do straight up how to or product evals but have to keep the fun and banter. The D&G vids need more of that so they are more like the rest.
Gotta love the Way Huge stuff. Always impressed with those.

Much better :) you forgot the chorus, the new boss ce-2w is pretty close to the ce1 he used. holy grail, dynacomp, moog/mxr phaser helps too ... the most important thing is really the ds2 and the ibanez wha, any strat/tele and any amp that you can set to that slight break up will do the trick.
He also apparently used a DOD FX65 for recording Blood Sugar Sex Magic. Those are cheap as fuck.

jeff beck would be so difficult, because most of his tone comes from his finger style and messing with the volume knob
@Balex Strand, I don't know about that, the lead tones in Free Me and Mouthful of Grass do seem to involve more than just plugging straight into a Marshall

Much better job than the last one . Great stuff! Few things to add though - he used Seymour Duncan SS1's in his strat, the Boss CE1 (Chorus) was his main modulation pedal, and yeah the wah would have been better if you had the Ibanez in stock. But anyways thank you for revisiting it!! Big JF fan.. Just wish I could afford a silver jubilee :D sounds great !
