In this episode of Sound Like, Rabea & Matt try to revisit British boogie rock band Status Quo, this time by busting the bank!
Taking on the roles of Rick Parfitt & Francis Rossi, there can be only one guitar for the job...Custom Shop Telecasters! The guys head over to the store to pick out some incredible looking Fender Teles along with some Marshall & Vox amplifiers to help recreate that classic rock tone.
Let us know how you think the guys did? How close can they get while Busting The Bank?

Here in Mexico there is a city called Ciudad Neza where Status Quo is the biggest rock band on earth, greetings!
That is so f**king cool
Yes it is Iml!!!
@@disharmonymictlantecutli8408 wasin Bogota last year and the Latin music scene is soo good, still organic and passionate, two qualities the west is letting slip fast.
My first Quo gig was 1980, it was my first ever gig, and i won the tickets in a bet with my friend, who's dad was friends with their manager.
He also got me all the albums up until Just Supposin', all vinyl and all first editions and i still have them.
Hopefully i will get to your city next visit assuming the pandemic doesn't kill travelling.
@@dingushussey4100 How lucky you are to have seen them that year, and when you want to come you are welcome friend!
@@disharmonymictlantecutli8408 South America is my favourite part of the world and only suffers from have a dilinquent northern neighour with an orange leader.
I will be back in Latin America as soon as i can.
Gary moore by busting the bank would be a great one for the new year
Does Anderton's have any of his signature models or a reissue 59's?
@Cutrepon his signature les paul is discontinued
and his hard rock period in 79 - 89
Josh Wheeler yes !!!!
Josh Wheeler too late. Kirk Hammett already busted that bank
Crikey! Matt's upped his soloing game to the max since the Ultimate Blues Rig video!
rock on boy!
Saki Miyu Very kind! Thank you man!
Good to see Matt let loose
yip ..I noticed a lift in his runs
I know right, it sounded awesome and that run at 9:04 was just incredible
Great to see you guys having so much fun with this tone! Sounds amazing.
That was my favourite ‘Sound like’ . Really enjoyed it. Very talented lads who make those very expensive guitars worth there money!
It's just fun watching you two interact and of course the playing and sound is always great!
Oh my goodness! I was 17 when Caroline was released... I have neglected the Quo for way too long. I just spent half an hour in UA-cam rock-heaven watching videos from 1973 to 2017. Back in the day it wasn't very cool to admit you liked the Quo with stuff like Yes, Bowie, ELP and Soft Machine in the mix. Now I'm open to pretty much everything, and wow, what a fantastic, pure and punchy rock sound. Just some of the best riffs ever, and great vocal harmonies to boot.
Thanks for stirring up memories of that 6th-form party where I met someone special ;)
I love Bowie and I Love Soft Machine. I listened to Yes a lot (ELP not so much - these things can happen). But my joy of listening to music for hours and hours in a row started when I was ten years old and my mom let me choose my first album. First I wanted a Sweet album, 'cos that's what I listened to since I was 5 years old, but I bought Rockin' all over the world'. After that I bought nothing but Status Quo for a looooong time.
I don't listen to the old albums as much as I used to, but still, everytime I hear the opening of their first live album, I can't help but being happy and feeling energetic. Man, I was addicted to the Quo.
@Mark JT: Priceless. I had to Google the exact release date ‘73 (that made me 14 - we weren’t at the same 6th form parties...) but I reckon somewhere in the past you had an RAF greatcoat and an obscure album under your arm 😎😎😎
In the 70’s My mate John subjected me to Yes, ELP and that bloody awful King Crimson record. All I wanted was emotion lifting Quo rock. Thank you to Andertons for pulling me back into the best era for music ever. It'll be on the Apple CarPlay later today under the “Ahh the ‘70s Playlist”.
On the live album in glasgow 1976
Steven Murphy ; That's the one!
@ Mark JT. Back in the day it wasn't very cool if you liked Quo?? OK, I was around 12 or 13 in NZ when Caroline was released and remember hearing it for the first in a record store on headphones at full blast. Totally euphoric moment. My older brother intro'd me to Quo during Piledriver the year before and I was totally obsessed and let everyone know that. I actually lost interest in the band after In the Army Now came out in 1986. In their latter years You would see middle aged men over 50 bringing blow up guitars to their gigs and embarrassing themselves like the cliche uncles dancing at their nieces weddings. I think it's not very cool to admit you ARE a Quo fan in today's climate tbh.
As a Quo fan very impressive! But if I’m nitpicking just bugs me how they play the parts wrong for every song 😂 but a great video none the less rock on 🤘🏻
They haven't done thier homework on this one.🤪
@@marcusrogers6917 that they haven’t
I particularly noticed the riff for Caroline - the last phrase was just completely wrong!
Have you thought it might be done on purpose to stop copyright?
@@fatdaduk they do every other band correctly and Quo has very much next to no media presence on YT. If that were the case there wouldn’t be a load of channels posting Quo tunes all over the place.
Just one of the tastiest sounds like with Top tier Tele's and two great amps. Me like. TY for your video's, they bring joy and knowledge in mass.
Sometimes all that is needed are two custom shop tele's and some old school amps to crank up!! Glad you are enjoying the videos!
I love this band and so happy u did them by busting the bank , u sounded amazing
Literally some of the best tones you all have ever achieved.
Fantastic job guys. Rabea's rig was spot on particularly.
Matt's tone was really gorgeous, with Rabea close second. Well done!
Great stuff and great playing. What a band!
Great job guys! Sounds amazing.
Great stuff gentlemen! Good sounds and very nice rig! Well played.
This was a spot on, all clean playing video! really awsome!
just about nailed it - great job - as always
Man, there are some glorious sounds in this video
Nice one. Loved watching & listening to this 🤩
Man...I love that band and I love that tone
Fun old time rock and roll. Great riffs guys!
Liked the video and I haven't even watched it yet. It was the Quo that got me into rock music... and Queen. A whole new world was then there to explore.
Insanely awesome opening jam! Killer!
Great one. Merry Christmas guys.
Matt!!!!!!! Shredding. Nicely played leads, man!!!
Excellent job. I was mad on Quo as a kid. Lost count of how many times I saw them live. Looks like you had a blast making this one.. :-) Would love to see a Steven Wilson or King Gizzard Sound like some time in the future. Cheers guys!
Nice job guy's, thank you and Merry Christmas
Brilliant as always lads
Great job guys!
You Rocked It Guys 👍👍🎶🎶🎸Some Good Stuff Right There.
wonderful episode guys !!!!!!!!!!
Some great tones in this one.
you nailed this one..many thanks..and rock on .....
well done. well done. just a glorious sound, quo or not.
Very cool. I also have the mini jcm800. The "low input + preamp AND master on full" - setting is just great. With a tubescreamer in front THIS is the sound. thx for the input on this. U guys really rock it :))))
I absolutely adore both tele’s..!!
Great gear and tones!
Looks like they had a lot of fun making this one.
I went to see them in the late 80s. They were such a powerful band in person, thoroughly enjoyable.
Another great episode of Sounds like, way to stay Status Quo.
Love your videos
So nicely done. I really enjoyed this vidéo, thank guys :)
Great job this time out. These are much much more fun to watch when you both are really into the band. Sound like... Threshold and Social Distortion would be fantastic.
Just great sound and you two seemed to have a whale of a time playing this stuff!
Love it! Good job!
Fantastic sound !
Sounded great!
YEA!! Lol Bea's face while playing today looked like he was loving making this video!
wow .. what taste in gear guys ... these rigs are stupendous ! .. that doubler is odd ly good .. the chorus is outstanding pedal.
Said it before and saying it again, Matt is an underrated player
WarriorofChaos20 🙏
@@mattwhornby oh my gosh, he saw my comment! Amazing day!
Sound like the Darkness by busting the bank, please.
Their new album is incredible!
That's gotta be just a FUN band to play ... every song just has a joy to it!
You nailed it!
Awesome rigs, those are some beautiful teles right there! One can only dream of this kind of gear.
As far as sounding like Status Quo goes, you did quite well. The one thing I noticed is during Whatever You Want, Rabea's rig was missing a bit of that treble, which could probably be fixed easily by adjusting the EQ-200 and adding a bit of treble back in. Other than that, it sounded great!
'Ow are you then, alright?!
Ty Tabor and the guitar tone from the first King's X!
Sounds like the Quo! Nice job
Possibly the best smile factor one ever!!
Sounds like is literally the thing I most look forward to watching each week. Not a Quo fan but still very enjoyable.
I now think it is time to do EVH BY busting. The without busting was one of my all time faves and I think it’s time to take it to the next level. 👍🏻
EVH Bumblebee Replica or one of the higher end Wolfgang's
Marshall JCM800 Studio head and cab
Wampler Pinnacle
MXR Phase 90 (Eruption, Panama, Mean Street)
MXR M117 Flanger (Hear About It Today, Unchained, Ain't Talking About Love)
MXR Stereo Chorus
MXR Echoplex Delay
Dunlop Cry Baby Wah (Poundcake)
and of course a power drill for Poundcake
Fantastic Caroline
Love to see a tribute to Steve Clark from Def Leppard both on a budget and unlimited from High n Dry to Hysteria...keep up the good work
You really nailed the sound
Damn Matthew. Solo game is on point. More of that sir.
definitley better than his soloing in the Ultimate Blues Rig Video
David Mcerlane Cheers man! 🤘
@@mattwhornby sounds like The Shadows. Cant beat a bit of Hank Marvin.
Look at the smiles!!
Never heard of Status Quo. Recognize almost all the riffs. XD
In terms of numbers of hits they're basically the most successful band ever yet no one knows who they are, it's so weird haha
If I were younger I would come to Andertons and buy new equipment. I've been playing for 51 years and now I have sindrom of carpal tunnel on the palm of my left hand and it hurts so I can't play. I have 6 guitars and now I just look at them and clean them. You guys are great.
Zadar-Croatia-Adriatic coast
Rabea hugging that marshall was a glorious sight
PLEASE DO ‘SOUND LIKE THE CLASH’ it will make my year
Think you nailed it lads.
The Brew!!!! I would love to see that. Great video anyway
Great Band
That Caroline intro was really on point!
Sounded good, but he played the wrong notes.
12 gold bars is a compilation album
Good job sounds good.
They've used the old sound like theme song 😍😍
I’m normally a big fan of this series of videos, but you guys didn’t quite nail this one in your normal manner. A shames as I’m a Quo fan too. Merry Christmas anyway guys. Keep the great content coming
A Telecaster is on my wish list. Just gotta clear out some of the lesser used stuff...and save a whole lot more money 😂 good video lads!
Playing Quo makes you smile. Can't beat a bit of Quo.
that Vox sounds great
Ah, classic. Status Quo riffs bring back some memories.
Without further ado:
Sound like Prince!
Sound like Jeff Buckley!
Sound like The Police!
Police!
Yep Prince 👍
@@jokullsnr8085 Thought for sure they had done them considering a search on UA-cam autocompletes very fast.
it's shocking how they haven't done Andy Summer and Sting yet!
@@KeeperOfPoops You are everywhere!
John frusciante on a budget, in honor of his return
i think frank reynolds should stop using that toe knife
Glad they still have a job!
Breezecam No he’s not
@@breezecam1099 your talking out of your backside pal...,!
@UCw5c55t-wpxucQg2CFViaAw Hendrix & Gilmore are not god's, they are human, very loose term...!
Great video as always!
I’d like to suggest Cry Of Love for a episode, a super underrated band that im sure many people would love! Their guitarist is amazing!
Every episode is like just watching Rabea and Matt doing a jam session.
Well done.
good to see Matt gets to play some lead .
He first did lead on Ultimate Blues Rig, but this was a massive step up from that video
This was great fun! Thanks guys - the old SQ really rock (down down,...)
Did I mention?
Sound like Bush - Sixteen stone era!
nice video! can we have a sound like for
Adam Clayton (U2) - without busting the bank
Robin Trower - without busting the bank
Vivian Campbell (Dio era) - without busting the bank
Peter Frampton - without busting the bank
Slash (solo career) - without busting the bank
Brian May (Queen) - BY busting the bank
also i don't think Francis plays fenders anymore, he has a different set of guitars now i think
Trower on a budget of £1000 would probably consist of:
Origin 20 (£329.00)
Small Stone (£67.00)
Squier Stratocaster Classic Vibe 70s (£329.00)
Fulltone Fulldrive (£175.00)
Vox 845 Wah (£59.00)
TOTAL - £959
@Null and Void their budget is £1500 so they could go for a Player strat with a maple neck like his signature guitar
@@KeeperOfPoops Hell, if you've got that much you can add the wahfull to the mix, too. His setup is pretty simple so it isn't bad to recreate on a budget.
< excellent! the more tele's the merrier the xmas >
You go Matt!
Sound like King gizzard and the lizard wizard would be the bomb guys!
I second this motion.
Good luck with finding some microtonal guitars! Rabea and Matt with a fret saw and some wire 😂
@@grahamstead2680 hell yeah! Get that bananaaaaaaaa
@@grahamstead2680 revelation has a jazzmaster type of guitar with microtonal frets. not that expensive and plays like a charm.
They should just pick one album, maybe nonagon or rats nest
I have a ‘79 25th Anniversary Strat that spent most of its life bouncing around the Caribbean as a house beater guitar in dive bar open jams that is thoroughly worn in and it has grime built around the frets just like on the custom shop that Rabea is playing. Probably the only time I’d be able to prove Rabea wrong about anything guitar related.
FyI Caroline was on the Hello! Album!
These guys are very smart and funny. They have great speaking voices, rich, deep baritone. Entertaining and easy to understand for the lay person.
If they haven't already, I feel they should form their own QUO covers Band.
I'll be their Drummer and Singer.
I would love to see sound like The Cure or something like that late 80's darkwave . Cheers.
Of all the days, today Frame just sold his original Tele in an auction. It's so hard to sound like Status Quo now unless you spend an absolute fortune and get VOX's, Marshals and Tele's from the 60's cause the newer stuff just isn't the same. Then there is the matter of all the tweaks done to both tele's, not original picks ups or bridges, the size of the strings Rick used. Very tough job but you guys gave it a good go. Nice!! P.S. Matt should of been playing the Rockin' All Over the World solo :P
Brilliant
About time for a Rush BY busting the bank
Amazed Rabea didn't go for the green relic that's currently on the site, but that rhythm tone Matt has is spot on!
I really enjoyed this one. Sometimes I felt that there was a bit too much gain, but in the end it sounded great.
Absolutely too much gain, Quo always played relatively clean/ point of break up on albums with a touch more live.
