Loeb is a champion in an era with watered down competition and hardly any manufacturers involved. Back in the Group B and consequent WRC era in the late 80's and 90's, the competition was razor sharp. Literally a piranha club of great drivers (many champions) and manufacturers looking to eclipse each other. When Kankkunen drove he raced against greats like Rörhl, Alen, Blomqvist, Vatanen, Mikkola, Biasion, Sainz and other great drivers.
There's something special in the way he pulls that Celica in and out of those corners... Him behind that GT-FOUR is untouchable...

What's crazy about this guys is that he is one of the few who drove a championship event in *every* top category of the World Rally Championship. He's driven Group 3-4 cars, he's driven Group B cars, he's driven Group A cars, and he's driven WRC cars. To put it another way, in 2002 he was the last guy who had driven an event in the original regulations (the ones from 1973).
And when you think what kind of competition he had and still won.. Loeb is a great driver, one of the best there is, but only one overpowered car and half the time only bums against him. And he didnt have one hand on steering another on stick and cicarette on his lips while doing it.. To me, Juha is goat. Closest to Loeb being so secure driver, very few mistakes but still fast. But concidering how different cars and opponents etc his trophys are way more impressive IMO.
@@RoisinT2Loeb beat both Mcrae and Sainz in his first full year in the same car. I find it amazing that guys like Solberg, Gronholm, Martin, Hirvonen are considered weak oposition. Sure he might have had very little top guys to compete with it but its not like he raced bums. Burns, Sainz, Mcrae, Makkinen were all still there in 2003 and he beat them all.
Celica GT-Four. The best looking rally car ever. When I was a kid I had a poster of the St-185 on my bedroom wall. 19 years later I now own one and just had the Castrol graphics put on it. Oldest car I have ever owned, and yet the best. Starts first time in winter and also loads of fun in the snow too.
He looked great with the Celica - very comfortable on the road. How he pulled through those corners is just amazing. He was a great driver and a beauty to watch
Watched Juha on rally NZ in group a and WRC era. Lancia delta integrale, toyota Celica, ford escort, Subaru Impreza, Hyundai accent. Against all the other legendary drivers. A truly great rally car driver. The overseas drivers loved rally NZ too. The highlight of the year for me back then. Would stage hop over three days to watch the greatest show on earth!!! He was so precise, consinstent, well planned is incredible! He was born to be the best rally driver! Sebastien Loeb is the king if we look the stats, than Tommi. That is called proffesionalism!
Funny fact is that most ppl from Finland use a word "Kankkunen" when they say that they have Hangover 😎 "Damn ill Drink too much and now ill have horrible Kankkunen"
I really love those Group B monsters, but when I was a young boy my favourite rally car was that A-Group Celica. It just looked so good, and for me it's still the best looking rally car ever. I remember it was that Celica which had the turbo cheat system that was so clever it took a long time before they notice it at the inspection... some kind of a mechanism that allowed more airflow to the turbo when the car was driven at full throttle.
Imo in gran turismos (especially between 2-4) rally experience was quite bad. Playing colin mcrae in ps1 is much better. And now later dirt rallies with wheel are really pleasant experiences.

It's the cars blow off valve. A "BOV" is what releases the air jammed up in your intake pipping after you release the gas "Throttle body closes" and that's when the blow off valve purges a weird sound. It's for turbo cars.
As grazy as it sounds group A was golden era of rallying. So many car brands racing against each other and any of them could win some rally during season.
It was my favorite car when I was a kid also and I got one as a first car. Everyone told me I was crazy investing 20000 euros in a 20 year old car that I would end up crashing. I'm so happy that I didn't give a fuck what anyone told me and still have her. There is something about the T18 that stands out and looks different to everything else.
At 7:49 that 205T16 E2 sounds like a jet fighter on steroids. It must have taken amazing driving skill to control a group B car with 550BHP over long rally stages. Kankkunen is the master.

@@ilkkak3065 It only had 350 horsepowers. It was 50 hp more than the preceding ST185, which had 300 hp due to the 34 mm restrictor plate.
