- Unlike some other motorsports, overtaking doesn't happen that often in rallying, but when it does it can be pretty spectacular!

Which one, in your opinion, is the most bizarre overtake? 🤔
Colin was for sure the most risky
Seb Loeb, it could be even worst…
¿Panizzi? in the Safari, he almost tried to kill some South American pair, lovely guy!

Imagine being Loeb at that moment (the last one)… The amount of confusion
Lucky the road was wide enough!!

Top job by the Marshall tho
I am always so surprised to see people knowing Loeb outside France, he is so underrated

4:41 The "no" of the police man was hilarious
Shame they didn’t show the full altercation. Now that was hilarious, ending with Gronholm muttering “I wish to have the last word.” 🤣
The discussion went like this (made-up words but the subjects aren't):
Officer = "You can't go on 3 wheels"
Marcus = "Yes, I can, just drove for a while on dirt to get here"
Officer = "It's unsafe on public roads"
Marcus = "No, it's fine, done it many times"
Officer = "It's illegal"
Marcus = "But if you let me..."

@@pummyyfrom the police officer? Not really, it would have been dangerous for him to continue driving like that
@@joelangley7974 In any other country they would have given Gronholm a police escort to the parc fermé. Welsh police are insufferable.
Reminds me of the good old days of WRC, when there was more than 7 full time drivers and more than 3 manufacturers competing for the top tittle.
So never?
@@hannuainsalo6825 example 2000: Mitsubishi, Subaru, Ford, SEAT, Peugeot, Skoda, Toyota, Hyundai, 15 full time drivers.
WRC sucks these days.
@@johnnycab8986 Might wanna go check back how useless half of those drivers were back then lol. Also too many manufactures pretty much killed the sport back then. It would be nice to have one or two manufactures right now but it wouldn't change that much. Best drivers still win always, 2000 had six different winners, 2023 five different winners and last year we had six. So it sucked as much back then as now lol
@@hannuainsalo6825 How did it kill the sport? At least it was nice to see more drivers and manufacturers have a shot. And how would it be nice to have just one or two. One of the whole points of WRC is not just to see drivers competing but to see which manufacturer can make the best car. Would you like to watch boxing where just there was just the 2 same guys battling in every match for the whole season. There would be no variety. Also one problem is the the last gen WRC cars and the current Rally1 cars are just space frames made from scratch that basically have nothing to do with normal road cars.
@@piimii55 I agree less is more but before the 2000s it was just Lancia, Peugeot Audi, once or twice ford, now a lot more teams are winning and that’s cool, tho I think lancia still has the most wins, cause that’s how much they dominated, and now with everyone competitive no one just wining 10 years in a row
Imagine being the co driver in the last one looking at your notes and trying to figure out where you went wrong 😂
Look, an "Imagine" comment!
At 2:00 that little "tap" could have easily sent Mikkelsen into the spectators. This is such an insane sport it makes even something like F1 look lukewarm in comparison. How they manage to keep racing on those back roads with a wheel falling off... it's a whole other level of competition
F1 has always been mid ever since the 2000s its just similarly specced cars running around following the exact same line lap after lap because any deviation from the ideal line would mean time lost.
I mean don't get me wrong the drivers are absolutly extremely skilled to drive at insane speeds with insame precision but there is just not much room for character when everything is so tightly regulated and optimized, which makes the races very visually boring.
Formula E has been breaking the mold though but its still not nearly as fun to watch compared to rallying where every driver have a different way to tackle the same corner ,the road conditions makes for crazy mud sprays and dust clouds that are just visually stunning.
F1 is compared to most racing I can think of.
you been watching too many movies and/or played too many games, this isn't NFS where small tap = car flies out of control.
they do the tap thing, because there's really no other way of getting front driver's attention. nobody in rally checks mirrors, if you do that .. then you'll end up in a tree quite fast or finish on last place due going extremely slowly or constantly going off the road due checking mirrors.
honking your has no effect either, because you simply wouldn't hear it. that's why they have headsets, rally cars have way too much noise.
you'd only notice at night when you see headlights, otherwise its near impossible noticing that there's another car behind you, even if you'd check mirrors, due the dust, it would be near impossible seeing the car anyways. that's why they do the tap and it's not dangerous at all, in real life cars dont fly into the sky when you gently tap at the back
@@Sethioz it really depends on the road surface, on asphalt the time to correct when your rear lose traction is very low so its easy to lose control really fast it's exactly why the pit maneuver is so effective its also why F1 cars goes apeshit form the smallest hit.
@@ipodtouchiscoollol
Nah, WRC and F1 are nowhere near exciting or challenging enough for my tastes. That's why I focus only on Nascar! They go around each course 200-400 times, while not only driving straight, but also turning left. Incredible! 😉
that last one is something else.
Imagine being behind the wheel 😱
props to that marshall
Going backwards on a rally stage is craaaazy
But not the first or last time, it's a very real risk
It's really insane!
I remember when grunholm fell down a few switchbacks on a big hill. Landed on 4 wheels, asked the crowd which way was the right way, fired it up and took off lol. Still finished 3rd after falling off a small mountain somehow lol
Didn't some lady drive past barriers in her car onto a live rally course?
But why he still continues even though he saw another car coming from opposite
What a clutch moment for that marshall.
I miss the old WRC days with Tommi, Colin, Richard Burns, Sainz, Gronholm etc. - loved it!

Mechanical failure. He more than a proficient pilot
@@installshieldwizard3017 I don't know where people are getting this idea it was a mechanical failure. Is it just something they've made up to make themselves feel better?
Read about the inquest. He was flying dangerously without a licence in a helicopter he wasn't authorised to fly in. He did three major things wrong that cost three innocent lives, as well as his own.
It wasn't an accident. It was gross negligence.

Tommi is an absolute legend, if he says sorry he meant it. Met him many many years ago, maybe even the season this incident happened.
So many people wanted to meet him, but he prioritised kids when having to deal with the huge crowds. It was a simple thing, but I must have been 7/8 and still remember that handshake.
Colin however refused to meet anyone, he was out of the title race and sulking.
I didnt know about the last one, truly bizarre. Nice video!
Last one is not bizzard, the driver probably tried to find a place to turn around without knowing there is car coming that close
some of these moments are iconic and i'm glad this channel isn't letting anyone forget about the good ol' early 2000s

@@drunkenhobo5039
U can hardly blame him for a helicopter malfunction. But yes RIP the two kids and the other adult that was cruelly taken in the crash ✌️
@@markthompson9914 It wasn't a malfunction. He was flying in a dangerous manner with an expired licence in a helicopter he was not authorised to fly. The inquest made that quite clear.

Rally is a completely different type of Motorsport. It isnt just about drivers and cars. Nature has an impact, sometimes a benefit, others a disastrous consequence if even a slight change in direction goes wrong. Thats why I love it.
one of the best compilation
WRC is crazy, but what's crazier is the spectators standing so close to such unstable and unpredictable dangers. Especially standing on apexes of corners and on crests.
That's part of the fun. Risk is fun, its exciting. Until it all goes wrong. But usually it doesn't. Hell, that's true of the people who race for fun too. It's all fun and games until you go into a tree at 100mph. But people need to be able to make these decisions for themselves.
Group B was even crazier, spectators were literally standing on the road
Seems like spectator insanity hasn't changed much since the Group B days
In amateur rallying you sometimes get a driver that won't let you past. It's infuriating - you know you must be at LEAST one minute quicker than them to have caught them, and the baulking is pointless. Presumably in professional tiers it's a bit more understood.
U can search for "finnish rally rage" to confirm although it probably wasn't possible to let that guy past anyway without risking both getting stuck in the snow :P
@@dmrfnkCame here because of that video :D
5:13 LMFAO that's like every console racing game when the other player has gone nuts. 🤣🤣
Sharp right, into medium left, caution traffic 😂
Fantastic material!!! Great memories :)
Very good video. Rare to see such nicely done videos these days.
4:59 that moment in a video game when you realize that you have already lost but conclude “well, this is fun too. Who will be my first victim?”.
That was very unlucky for Meeke in that there was no way he could pull over in a suitable area where Tanak could pass him without burying himself in the snowbank. Would have been very harsh if Tanak had it out with him after that.
tänak was himself stupid in that moment. those points in sweden would helped him to win championship already in 2018.
No way he can rightfully blame the other driver for that. It's frustrating, but they aren't _required_ to pull over, they have points to try to win too. He tried his best to let him by, but he misjudged and was too hasty. Shit happens. He could have done the same and just gone if the road, that's why it's racing.
God, this makes me want a rally car, they sound so good
As a kid, I lived right next to a rally stage. The sound gets pretty annoying if you hear it all the time haha. They do sound great though, don’t they?
Especially the delta s4

spectacular moment... great rally
This era of rally, I have memories of from my childhood
Rally Argentina...I grew up riding my 4 weelers on them roads. amazing.
Tanak that crashed due to Meeke is one of the surprisingly action of WRC
OK, this is an exciting video! Nice idea!
I was expecting far worse. There are sooooooooooooooooooooo many videos of lower category rallies where the slower driver refuses to move over, whether due to ego, cluelessness, or whatever. If you're in front, then you're behind and need to get out of the way, no matter how much you don't want to be passed.
What? Like the dramatic footage in the intro that isn't even in the video? Classic redbull.
@@nullobject7966 Look up, "HILARIOUS FUNNY IRISH RALLY IN-CAR 2008". It's the stuff of legends.
No, you aren't _required_ to pull over. It's a polite thing to do. But you loose more points the slower you are.
@@justforever96 Here in Australia, you are required to. If someone doesn't, they will likely get into trouble, and the car that was held up gets time back
You do not mix music to one ear and speech to one ear, you blend them. It is one of the first rules of audio mixing!

Great compilation aswell as commentary.
id like to believe that competitiveness takes a back seat to 'lets not kill the guy passing'.
This in U.S. NASCAR parlance is known as 'using the chrome horn' (referring to the old chromed front bumpers) to attrsct somones attention. Another well known example of this is off-road racing where pesple give a couple beeps and a BANG to let people know they are and WANT to pass.
"i CAN go!"

"I can go" lol
I'm terrible at rally racing on the sims... this video just makes me wanna get good at it... far more exciting to watch than F1.
Nothing is as exciting to watch as rally. How could it be? Driving flat out on narrow dirt roads, unpracticed beforehand, trees and rocks and spectators all along the track, loose and variable driving surfaces under you, weather changes when it changes, dust, animals, either you get lucky or you don't, you have to take it as it comes. And you are driving while putting complete faith in your codriver to call the turns correctly, or you end up in the trees at 100mph. And _he_ has to spend the entire race with his eyes on the pace notes, not losing track for a moment, putting complete faith in you to not kill him while you fly past the trees and rocks and slide sideways around blind corners. I stumbled onto rally years ago and the whole concept still amazes me. And I don't see how anyone can be as talented as a top tier rally driver. Not to diminish the other racers, but they don't have to drive the way a rally driver does. They get good tarmac, safety barriers and runoffs, they get to practice and learn the track before they race on it.
this is the only racing sport I could possibly get into. Haven't started watching yet, though.

Pride is a sin, ja?
@@innocentbystander3798 Proud to be a sinner then
'Pride' suffers from semantic overload much like 'love' does. It's fine to be pleased for the accomplishments of one's own culture.
@@o00nemesis00o Well... it's simple: pride = I am > others. Everyone wants their pride to be the "good" kind, but there's no such thing. Humility is good. Pride bad. Of course nobody wants to hear that. Pride is a very popular sin, one that all can enjoy seemingly without blame or guilt. Or jail time.
