That night of 24 years ago in that final roud I was there on the Turini and two other PS in the morning. A big Auriol chewed over a minute of disadvantage on Delecur and then won the rally. Occelli said: "For the first time I was so afraid to stand by Didier!" It was a shame for Sainz for the bang, but now Delta was at the end of her career, her development had already been over for two years. Wonderful memory! Creepy!
Juha Kankkunen and Didier Auriol are GrB drivers. Didier drove the R5 Maxi Turbo in 85, Juha the Celica TCT, Timo Salonen took the title in the 205 T16 E2. In 86 Juha took his first title with the 205 T16 E2, Auriol drove the Metro 6R4. So in Group A here it actually was the end of their time. This year (93) was the last title of Juha. Didier took 1994. Sainz started in 87, right after GrB was done, so he missed it by an inch. They were the old guard in 1993, not the next level. The next level started with 1995 title of McRae, then Tommy Mäkkinen had 4 in a raw, Grönholm, Burns and Solberg. Then came the Loeb era till it was done with the 2.0, manufacturers left and VW used the time to make some titles without competition, till Toyota announced their return, Hyundai joined and Ford said they'll increase support for MSport. That's the moment VW used the diesel gate as excuse and left the champion Ogier without a car, such a d*ck move... Well, he got then two titles with Ford and same people race till today. It's kinda funny you didn't know though Juha and Didier were running for some years. Juha since 82, Didier since 84. Quite the most popular phrase about GrB belongs exactly to Juha Kankkunen (WRC is for boys, Group B was for men).
This is amazing quality. Where did you get the footage from? It's brilliant. The close camera work, including the atmospheric shots are great. It's as good as modern footage.
Broadcast was shot in 4:3 these days. This got modified to 16:9, so there was something removed from both the top and bottom, which makes it look like zoomed in. Nevertheless, amazing footage from probably the best Group A season.
Bellissimo video, vecchi ricordi del Gruppo A magico, ancora ogni macchina col proprio suono..potevi riconoscerle anche senza vederle bei tempi che forse non torneranno più.
I was a kid, loved watching coverage of rallies on TV back then. Some of the most iconic and prettiest rally cars raced in these years, what a time for starting to watch them :).
Absolutely the machines these days are nothing compared to those but in those days like you say it is raw hardcore mechanics driver everything put into those cars is insane let alone group b oh my goodness think of those cars 800 horsepower supercharged supercharged lancia anyway those days are over now we have what we have and it's still great greatest drivers in the world what you say about that now huh
The winner D.Auriol covered 594 km in 6 hours and 13 minutes. That is average speed of 96 km/h. The winner of 2019 S. Ogier covered 323 km in 3 hours and 21 minutes. Average speed 97 km/h. The guys in this old video are going fast! :)
Auriol was absolutely mental on tarmac and Monte Carlo also suited him alot. He won Tour de Corse 6 times. This is in rally world equivalent to Schumacher winning Magny Cours 8 times in F1. So we know Auriol was no slouch. He could take a minute lead off of you in couple of stages. Just ask Carlos Sainz 😉. I still think China 1999 was his best win. For someone who is known as a tarmac specialist to defeat all these champions on hard gravel in interchangeble conditions and that rally was particulary hard on cars that year to the point of Sainz complaining about officials and wanting to quit. Yet Auriol powered through to win without any complaints. That has to stand for something...
@@smnfrb Yet despite the dangers you can't help yourself from seeking the thrill? I have always wondered what racing drivers seek in the sport and I reckon it differs from one to the next, one desires the adrenaline rush, another loves to win and yet another might love the lime light.

That Celica ST185 was a very nice car indeed, but for me, from this era, it was the Delta HF Integrale 16v Evoluzione I that was my absolute favourite although by the time the 1993 season started is very long in the tooth, and with the introduction of the Celica ST205 I suppose I didn't mind too much as that was the only car that I thought came close to matching the Delta! You would think the group b era had just carried on. The body kits and spoilers were toned down a bit in general but they must have been comparable in the speeds they were doing and the crowds are basically in the road still. Great cars and great sounds.
The WRC should have a look at this, and realise what all their sterilisation has done. They were proper cars that looked, acted, and sounded like they were on a mission. The camera work going on here in just those few short moments far out shines anything that the WRC channel has done since it's conception. Just the sheer volume of people in attendance goes to show how popular such events actually were. Modern rally's are struggling to get enough people to marshal them let get alone spectators. Hardly surprising considering that most spectators viewing areas are usually on a hill top somewhere about 1/2 a K away from the road.
This was a great era, second only to Group B. WRC machines were not far from the cars you could actually buy, and the rules promoted development of exciting road cars. Thanks for the fantastic footage!
I'm just going to say it- it's idiot spectators like these that have made modern WRC so sanitized and boring. The same reason Group B was banned and we never got to experience Group S, the even more extreme category that was supposed to follow. I can't help getting frustrated when I see spectator control so broken. Maybe saw one marshall in this whole footage. And he was probably treating it like a bullfight too.

@Hill For a high skilled driver such acceleration isn't an issue. Nowadays RallyX and Electric cars are doing much better in this area than the Group B one.
