Rally Heaven - Shotgun in a Lancia Stratos and Delta S4 - /CHRIS HARRIS ON CARS

- This might just be the best day of my working life. The nut-job launch event for the Pirelli P7 Corsa Classic was pure, Italian, chaotic genius with Markku Alen and Juha Kankkunen. Watch and smile.

every once in a while i like to come back and watch this. for the cars, and to see chris absolutely TERRIFIED in the 037 lmao
I love this factor also, Chris knows his cars, group b was different
same, haha
I do the exact same thing. Watching those guys behind the wheel of those cars driving the way they do I think to myself my God what would it have been like when they were in their prime, you couldn't have nailed my butt into one of those cars with them. I love it when Chris is in the 037 and he says " That's Fast" 3 times in a row....lmao! Eyes bugging out
Me too they used to pass at my house in practice and rallying...Glory Days 😉
yep, same for me!
Paolo Andreucci is now 11 times italian rally champion. :)
Oh ah what it's a that road, let me kick fuck this car up there then
The Italian guy at the end, his face expressions are priceless. This video gives you goosebumps.
That is the face of true concentration! It's safe to say he was truly in the zone!
Paolo Andreucci, 11 times Italian Rally Champion and 10 of those wins with his wife Anna Andreussi as co-driver. Almost unbelievable.
@@Juniper458 So true. Absolutely zero cognitive load dedicated to not looking like he's having a stroke. He's too busy driving the balls off the car to care what his face is doing.
A driver's equivalent to guitar face 😎
@@jaybrewster2475 rofl thanks for that mate
9 years later I keep coming back to this video. Possibly my favorite of all videos. So many hero's and passion. Its been emotional. Thankyou
I love these old racing drivers, they are so chill and cool, all while possessing amazing wisdom and skill. They don't seem snooty and all.
I couldn't agree with you more.. And Chris Harris has the best job learning so much from Pro's like this. Once Old timers like this pass on. We lose a big part of history, and extreme talent..
To be honest, the drivers on most fronts aren't that bad either. Most of them are decent. An exception is Formula One maybe. There are a considerable number of drivers there that I wouldn't like to be around.
like walter röhrl , one of the chillest dudes in the german motorsport scene
The finns will always be chill no matter what they drive. Out of all the nationalities i have met the finns and canadians have by far the highest like/dislike ratio
@@kartoffelsaek Most drivers including formula 1 are pretty chill outside of competition.
I hope one day Lancia is resurrected to its former glory. It never deserved what it has now become.
Renzsu yeah it did. It started making cynically shit cars noone in their right mind would buy. You could watch a lancia rust while the oil quietly stained your driveway.
Shitboxes selling on the name.
Dellacondan blame Marchionne. He left them die to not interfere with Alfa
I laugh when I see them
Do not forget that behind all these glorious times was the Abarth racing team. Fiat held only the "Lancia" as a good brand name that time after the merger in 1969. The Abarth became the Fiats Group official racing department.
@@Tsagami It's a shame, really. The Stratos, the 037 and the Delta S4 were mental machines. I wouldn't mind owning either of those. But then again they probably wouldn't be as easy to live with as the Mighty Quattro. It really is a pity they got abandoned for Abarth. Although the 037 also has a couple of scorpions on it.
I keep coming back to this video about once a year to se Chris' mind being blown by that Italian madman in the 037. Never gets old!
This was awesome up until the 037, then it was mind blowing.
TheIDGE Yeah that 037 was my favourite. I think it has the best sound and the best handling. And the guy who drove it was properly on it.
Jesus... Agreed... I'd forgotten how bloody awesome those old time rally monsters sounded. Old rally drivers don't fade away, they just spend their time making us mere mortals look like learners!
All the hair on my back stood up when he floored it.
Chris' eyes ay 12:45 are hilarious. He is freaking out. The driver is grinning like a fool.
I only wish the editor had used more onboard footage. That bit when Chris went 'That was fast' - would have been great to see the car going through the corner.
When i was 7 in 1977 my dad , was the managing director of Public Relations at Pirelli in England. Dad took me up to Silverstone where there was some rally car show on .
He fixed me up with a ride in the Alitalia Stratos around the track , driven by the man himself ... Sandro Munari!
I was only 7 so i don't remember many details but i haven't forgotten about that little adventure ever since. Thanks for this video ...thanks Daddy..Rest in peace❤
I have met my compatriot Juha Kankkunen a couple of years ago. When I approached him, I only thought of meeting one of my childhood heros and a 4 times World Champion. Almost all of that was "forgotten" immediately, because he was such a gentleman, polite, considerate, easy to approach and relaxed, a thoroughly nice person. The best and also a funny part was that it started to rain and as I was standing outside of a ground-level veranda and Juha was standing under a balcony about a meter away from me, he pulled me away from the rain to keep me from getting wet. A small gesture, yet a very nice and a genuine one, too. What a great ambassador for the sport and for Finland. He made one fan very happy that day. :D
They say you should never meet your heroes as you may not like what you find in person.
Always nice to read a story that proves this bit of "conventional wisdom" to sometimes be untrue.
A mate of mine was there and got a ride with Andreucci in the Delta S4. He said it was the most terrifying thing he has ever experienced.
By the look on his face, Chris seems to agree.
We all know, we like the adrenaline rush :)
9.36 and 12.11he sees the Grim Reaper :-D
I believe it !
i would sit there like the Italian and do tonque twisting
Paolo Andreucci + 037 = Scary
still my favourite Chris Harris vid,
must've watched it 30 times or more and its still as impressive as the first time.
hero day, hero cars just properly proper stuff :-)
m ej or... instead... world peace?
??
Just found it again today. What an awesome Video.
I just love how relaxed the Finns are, looks they are doing 20 mph on a country road going to church on a Sunday :D
Finnish style = car accelerates, not the driver.
sz1234sz I shall remember this. It's a great quote.
Was actually given to me by my Finnish driving instructor when I seemed to be veeeeery unpleased about the performance of the schools car while flooring it to a highway ramp for the first time....haha. Very applicable in motorspots!!!
sz1234sz then +1 for your driving instructor also. Nice.
Small town Helsinki, so I will prob bump into him in some dinner restaurant in the next 6 months.... so +1 wil be delivered! :)
Man, the noise that Stratos makes... amazing
GTTeancum Ferrari engine = life.
+GTTeancum where's you saw the stratos in this video man ?
+Jean-Jacques Herpes it's the first car he rides in.
+Nick Parau sorry my bad i haved 2 youtube page with Chris Harris ...
I have confused two videos
+GTTeancum I agree that Ferrari 2.4 L V6 is probably the best sounding V6 ever , a lot of that noise is also induction noise since the rally stratos runs triple Weber DCNF Carbs with no sort of air filters usually
The look on Chris's face! Priceless. Rally drivers are a different breed of people.
That generation in particular. Those guys are on another level of driving. And they cut their teeth on bare-bones 70s and 80s cars.
Best drivers in the world in my opinion. Rally drivers are magicians.
Chris looked genuinely scared in the 0-37. Never seen him afraid in a car before
Street Racers UK I was terrified just watching it!
I know right?? I would have fainted!! hahaha
Street Racers UK I can believe that. Paolo Andreucci is a monster behind the wheel. Go and watch some onboard videos from the Italian Rally Championship
this is something good,in a Subaru ua-cam.com/video/OIM-C_SrkR8/v-deo.html
That’s because he learned it was eeeezier in the fasta... 😂
Lancias are Red, Subarus are Blue, and a revved out 22B goes ZUTUTUTUTU...
+ThatOneGuy Lancia is Red (like Ferrari and Alfa) not because brand colour is Red.
Red is Italian official colour for Motorsport (and speed sports in general like downhill race or bobsleigh for example).
Italy Red, British green, Germany white.. etc
+lazios german is silver (silver arrows)
xXRoccatXx No.. Germany is White.
Silver Arrow is Mercedes only.
+lazios yes it's true!
+ThatOneGuy
epic hahaha
The 037 has always been my favourite rally car, saw it in period, in Britain, absolutely beautiful
I remember seeing the '85 RAC and actually being disappointed that the S4 was being debuted. I went in the hope of maybe seeing the 037's swansong...
Every second of this was incredible.
The S4 is like an F1 car for the forest but a total deathtrap as well. Awesome machine.
The last Italian dude was savage, great vid.
Absolutely not the same games. Like apples vs oranges. I deeply admire both kind of drivers. Can't say the same for NASCAR drivers though: Dorks in dork "cars" involved in dork demolition derbys. Clowns.
Theodore Marakas and not just a rally car, this cars specially must be just nuts
Dont bother to do your helmet up.
@Theodore Marakas No doubt, plus it's more real car driving.
@@marcryvon Yawn
....and this was Lancia folks, a piece of Italian art. Not the whole story, indeed. Lancia is dead, unfortunately, but its legend will never die
tell that those german fanboys that say audi had the best 4wd and rallycar haha
adm194 Audi Quattro was fantastic, but here we are celebrating the legend of Lancia, who ruled the Rally World Championships for 20 years with at least 4 different generation of cars... 4 and 6 cylinders, 2 or 4 WD, with and w/out Turbo, Turbo+Supercharger, 8 or 16 valves, carburators or electronic injection... Lancia retired from Rallies in 1992 for manifest superiority, German fanboys should only respect it this glorious brand!
Fulvia, Stratos, the ugly one and Delta S4. All of them legends.
Aaaah, what ugly one ?? Please explain... :-0
Marc René Yvon i think he was referring to the Lancia 037. He forgot to mention the Delta Integrale.
"what a car" - chris / just a wink of an eye - kankkunen. lovin´ it!
Roope Mänty Would of be better if he had his helmet done up!
I'm glad to see that these old cars still get DRIVEN, and they don't just sit in a museum. :)
Keeps them alive just like an old violin
No other car brand can inspire the level of fascination that Lancia does. These cars are just amazing.
This video would still rate amongst Harris's top 10. I've watched it dozens of times, enjoyed it every time and learned something new every time.
What impresses me the most is the calm demeanor of the older drivers. None of the drama and attitude of young drivers, just all business. Very impressive.
These were the guys who taught the guys that taught us. If you think that's scary, imagine how they would be driving in their prime in 1985 with pacenotes so they don't have to hold back.
@@nightowlrally To be honest, all three would know those roads very well indeed. As Markku said after his drive, he first drove the Stratos on the San Remo. The same roads were used in Juha's day, and of course, in the Italian Championships, Paulo would have driven the road several times a season...
We had a Lancia Fulvia 1.3 in the 70s in our family, pity not a HF, it was too expensive for us, the maintenace and the insurance just out of reach. When I see a Lancia, no matter wich one, it beings back lovely memories, Lancias of the late 40s and early 50s were the cars that we Italians liked to have as workmanship was at its best, elegant and very reliable. Not to forget the F1 Lancia D50 that Ferrari used to win the world championship in 1957 with Juan Manuel Fangio. It is a great pity that such a make after winning 10 world rally championships, Fiat decided to just put and end to this historic lame. We Italians will always have Lancia in our heart. Lovely video, thans a lot Mr Chris Harris.
The way all of these drivers smile when they finish the stage is just Motorsport at its finest, I was smiling with them. Absolutely beautiful machines, and truly brilliant drivers.
The italian pilot in the 037 is priceless, fast as hell for an old chap...great video!!!!!!!!!!!
I keep coming back to this vid every now and then. its truly one of the best iv ever seen, its got an aura surrounding it that iv not seen in other vids.... god bless group B and those that lived the dream, and chris harris for his best vid and hes not even driving,
Andreucci, such an amazing intense driver what a friggin master!
At 9:05 the Delta has so much torque and grip, it pulls a freakin wheelie out of the corner!!!! God I love Group B!!!
That's just the suspension setup, an economy hatchback could cock a wheel if you stiffened it up properly
@@seaalon138 The only Group B car that really could pull wheelies was the Quattro S1 (sorry for blaspheming on the page)...
@@seaalon138 yes the suspension is amazing how it transfers weight and stays planted, it was a drift body roll that gave the illusion of a wheelie
@@paulcaswell2813 haha nope! Audi’s are too front heavy to do a wheelie and rally cars aren’t not designed to do that, it would have to be rwd like the Stratos, a Stratos would wheelie if it had like 900hp
Haha that Paolo Andreucci guy is a legend!
I like how Chris Harris let the legends do their thing instead of doing the driving himself
MIKEK3NT It wasn’t that kind of event. Those cars are worth too much to have anyone but one of the former or current WRC drivers at those speeds on narrow tarmac like that. Chris Harris is a good driver but he is not a rally racer. The difference in driving ability is actually quite staggering from just about anyone who just drives around recreationally to the near-godlike touch WRC drivers have; I doubt Chris would truly begrudge that comment as the better driver you become the more you realize you don’t know shit about driving at the truly best-5 to 10 on the whole planet level.
Chris was more than comfortable sitting in car with the drivers he grew up with idolizing - the actual rally legends. I think he was afraid when it was Paolo´s turn to drive. That´s not necessarily a good thing is it.
@@liekkilada If I was able to sit in one of those cars with any rally legend. I'd want him to rip the arse out of the stage in it, I wouldn't give a fuck if I returned. I'd happily die in the chapel of engineering perfecton that is the group B car.
@@mangamaster4 Agreed... Best. Rollercoaster. Ever. But have to say that Paulo sure knows how to throw that '37 round the bends!
*This is INTENSE!!*
Absolutely phenomenal!! This gets your adrenaline flowing just by watching it!! Even Chris Harris seemed a bit overwhelmed!! Talk about thrill rides!! Wow!!
I had that thought too. This is a guy who's driven nearly everything there is to drive, and when Juha got on the throttle his initial response was "dear God!" Really makes you appreciate what a monster the S4 was.
The other thing I noticed about the S4 section was from the bumper-level view just after 7:26. Just watch the motion of the scenery going by, and how fast it picks up when he punches the throttle. At first I actually thought the video had been sped up for a quick flythrough of the course, but if you listen to the engine during that burst of speed and through the next turn, the car's motion syncs up with it, and the engine's pitch sounds normal. So it really is (apparently) gathering speed that quickly. Just unreal.
You are very right...good observation. I watched it again and at the 7:26 mark, it is noticeable how quickly it accelerates. Absolutely phenomenal! I am also so impressed at how they drive these cars so fast around such twisty, tight turns! So much talent...and experience! 👍 😎
Jim Griffin
Damn I really miss the group B, there were some brave drivers back then and the cars were beasts!
U really needed them balls!
And the audi, the noise and sheer power was amazing!
Had the luck of seeing some stages back in the 80's, still remember them like yesterday!
ubbgn Definitely! Group B was awesome! Indeed...the cars were amazing...and as you said, total beasts! 👍 😎
"5th gear! You shouldn't be in 5th gear there. That shouldn't be possible." LOL
in fact it was 4th,1st is down in these and many race cars
@@MrAletube Nope was first in 4'th in a previous corner but then at (13:36) Chris say 5 "Fifth gear !!!"
newfound awe and respect for lancia, the savage motorsport character of these cars gives me shivers
the 037 driver makes me question the faces i make while driving....
Dalton Villnave I thought he was having a stroke 🤣
You subconsciously try to turn your thoughts into words with your tongue, so biting your tongue means you can focus that wasted brain power on more important things like not crashing and dying.
Cole Hartel until you hit a big bump and bite off your tongue.
It’s a no no, just like putting your thumbs in between the steering wheels spokes..
@@rolux4853 Relax, he´s italian...
大変good‼️
I don't know why, but listening to old Italian race car drivers talking makes me feel happy inside.
Whoever thought of and organized this event: BRAVO!!!!
Lancia rules. Best rally cars ever. And thumbs up for Paolo Andreucci, 9 times italian champion, not mentioned in the description - as the Lancia 037.
that 037 though,...got goosebumps just watching and listening to it.
I can't imagine what it was like to ride with these legendary drivers, this would have left me speechless and drooling on myself with my heart exploding out of my chest and shorts full of you know what. Incredible once in a lifetime experience, and a pleasure to watch.
the last guy was very very italian haha
IS VERY EASY IN THE FASTA!!!
I laughed so hard at that.
Paolo Andreucci,9 times italian rally championship.
He wouldn't speak english so well, but you cannot say the same of his driving skills
For the love of all that is sacred, fasten your helmet strap, man! :)
He was CRAZY MAMA MIA lol
" with this car it is easier in the faster" AWESOME
Nothing sounds better than an Italian car. I had an Alfa Milano, never put a stereo in it.
One the best racing cars videos on the youtube! Awesome!
The wheels on that Stratos are so sexy.
couldn't agree more with u dude
I have to say, although I was very unoriginal unfunny, at least I meant that, unlike you
Those coffin wheels will never not be sexy.
Campagnolo could really make a sexy mag...strong and light, too.
The whole package is sexy. I'd pick the Stratos over all the others and would be perfectly happy to eat their dust with that wonderful sound at my shoulder.
this are the best 3 rally cars ever ever
these lancias are so awesome i'm getting emotional
Probably my favourite car video of all times, I keep coming back to it!
Love that 027 driver, focused like a lens
Man that 037 is one scary beast!
These Italian guys are such nice people. Great video,
Who?
Ebin Laden markku allen
gasixteenb11
Markku is Finnish just like Kankkunen
i know but a lot of fans think he is but he only race for Italian teams.
gasixteenb11 Doesn't make him Italian....
I don't really know why, but i get a tear in the corner of my eye when i watch this. Maybe because i will probably never get the trill to se these wounders in person. Or maybe i just miss my old Lancia...
This is The best video that include cars on youtube ever. Chris Harris, you describe cars, their handling, preformance and everything that's important about driving like no one else. Surreal is the word for your describing and you almost put me in front of steering wheel in some of your videos. Thank you Chris Harris and please continue you legacy.
Stratos- suspension
Delta S4 - engine power
037- weight
Don’t forget stratos engine, Ferrari Dino!
037 - weight (distribution)
For example the Group 4 Stratos is actually a couple hundred pounds lighter than the 037, but the 037 has a lower center of gravity for faster change of directions and longer wheelbase for more stability
@@ducatikawasaki1290 great N/A engine but it was obsolete by the 80's, they even turbocharged it but that didn't work out very well so they moved on to build more powerful and crazier engines
I watch this about once a yr, it keeps getting better. Chris is the best car presenter on the planet.
This video is addictive. I can't keep from watching it over and over and over again.
It's a pity that cars like these aren't, and can't, be built anymore. By comparison, new cars are bloated behemoths relying on microprocessor-based control systems to keep them out of the weeds.
With these cars, there's no one to save you from yourself. It's just you and the car. There's no computer code separating you from your maker.
I was in total aww of these cars as a kid it was phenomenal the noise they made going through the forest's spitting their unburnt fuelled flame thrower's into the night it sent tingle's and shiver's through my whole being.
The old driver's Walter Rohl,Markku Alen,Stig Blomkvist and Juha Kankkunen are living god's to me I totally understand how an ex ballet dancer became a world class rally driver this is pure poetry in motion every tiny element of balance exploited to the enth degree.
The 037 I'm glad to see is actually as scary to ride in as it looked in a rally these car's are homologation's in their truest form for me they are pricless work's of art the the lightness coupled with their vicious power will enthral me for the rest of my life.
The Audi's were the force de resistance I will always remember Michell Mouton the lone female driver of the time being right in the thick of it in her Audi sport swb.
The death trap Lancia Stratos and the whine of the supercharged s4 Lancia will stay within my soul after I'm dead.
Those Were THE DAY'S!!!
Beautiful to watch thank you Chris.
That 037 sounds absolutely phenomenal.
I love the attitude of Alen, Granpa style, smiling and relaxed, yet driving a monster.
4:31 puts such a big smile on my face, 2 real enthusiasts out enjoying an incredible car and having the time of their lives.
When I first started watching and saw that the video was 16+ minutes long, I thought I'd scan through and catch the good parts. Well, I kept watching in the entire video and couldn't believe it was over, "already". What a priceless experience!!! Thanks for sharing.
I wish Chris still made these. Bloody brilliant
Don't know how many times I've come back to watch this
Pirelli know how to launch a product! These guys! These machines! #rally
wow what a legends when i was about 16 (1985) rally was a biggest event in my city in southern hungary we only heard about this guys but later on via videos we were stunned and blowned away by grupe B . Long live grupe B after 30 year still gives me the chills :)
We had the pleasure of Kankkunen and Alen driving Group B in Rally New Zealand back in the 80's. Like you I was a teen back then.
Paolo has got to be the ‘Michael Jordan’ of Rally Car drivers . . . those expressions! He looks enormously gifted, yet helpless, while piloting this beast of a supercar. Man & Machine are perfectly synchronized & it’s a wild thing to watch! Lancia greatness!
Every now and then, I come back to this video and watch it again. It's one of my favourite things on UA-cam, mostly for Chris boggling helplessly.
"Yeah, that was quite alarming, actually," in a deadpan delivery... brilliant.
"Oh my god, that was fast... that was fast.... that was fast." Ha! :)
The over-run on the Stratos is amazing!!
what a cool old dude though. He's all excited because of the little Lancia, Chris is all excited because he gets to sit shotgun to one of the greats. It's just Glorious!!
That is one of the best Chris Harris videos ever. Extraordinary. Says a bloke who's owned a couple of Fulvias and an Integrale and now drives an Alfa Giulietta QV ;)
You can tell the guy driving the 037 is putting in some serious concentration. What a machine!
Only two words can describe this - fucking awesome =)
Chris! you didn't get the Pavarotti reference!!! AHHHHH
Bravo Classica 👏Viva Lancia 🇮🇹🙋♀️
13:08... “he’s properly going for it now”. The best part
Countless times I've watched this
That S4 sound, man... Oh boy.
Every once and a while I come back to watch this too. it's the stuff real car guys like Chris and the rest of us adore. He goes to a tire launch press event that is frankly kind of beneith him journalism-wise. he goes because the cars are ledgendary, and so too the drivers. Who could pass up that opportunity? I love that part where he does his journaistic duty and starts flogging how good the tires are, even the driver has a laugh at how disingenuous it is, lol.
This is maybe my 15th time I watch this clip. Can't get enough. Awesome !
The acceleration of the S4 off the line is unbelievable. That go pro footage is amazing
There's this meme in Italy, allegedly in an interview before a race Markku Alén once said "If tire grips I win the race... if tire doesn't grip I end up like a bomb in the mountain" of course it sounds better in Italian spoken by a Finnish guy
I can imagine that Chris gets a big grin all over his face every time he remembers this day. It must have been a lot of fun to be driven by those legends. And I love the look of the Stratos, what a design.
Wow! What a day indeed. I'm green with envy. I loved watching the 037 and Delta in Group B action. Those were by far my favorites. Great video.
Paolo Andreucci hasn't even put his helmet strap on haha and his tongue looks like its doing the driving haha
@11:55 The moment, being onboard, you realize the ride is driven by the Devil himself.
@12:05 The moment you start to look for a help and protection.
@12:35 The moment you lost last hope for a rescue.
UA-cam gold. Never fails to make me smile. Legends all around but that 037...
I can’t believe I first watched this video 10 years ago. It’s still awesome and every once in a while I come back and watch it just to enjoy the car porn. Life has changed a lot since this video launched and I’m honestly not nearly as passionate or enthusiastic about cars as I was then, but this video still hits all those tinglys for me.
Smiled the whole time that little Italian thrashed that 037. That man seemed slightly insane
slightly xD
beg your pardon...that little italian is Paolo Andreucci. Try find him on you tube...you see who we're talking about :)
Rally drivers are insane.
One of the best videos i have ever seen in my life thank you.
I briefly worked with the local team of Vic Preston jnr. and John Lyall preparing for the 1984 Marlboro Safari Rally in which they and Markku Alen raced the 037 to 4th and 6th place against the four wheel drive competition. I have never forgotten what a beautiful rocket that car was! Legendary.
This is one of the best videos EVER!!!! I've watched it probably four times, and I've had a huge smile on my face every time!!!!
Neither Markku nor Juha lost their edge. You can tell a rally driver from a legend that way. Finns smash it at racing, fact.
The way Juha seemingly puts no effort into it yet still fazes Chris is fantastic. And the little wink just to say "yeah, I wasn't trying at all!"
If the noise of that Stratos doesn't tickle your pickle, I don't know what can.
yeh, I'd make a sticky mess all over that car :D
Aussie50 Out of all people I'd expect to reply to this comment I wouldn't expect it to be you, I love watching your videos :o
Congratulazioni
Aussie50
you took the words out of my mouth lol, an S4 a 037 and a Stratos that is not pornografy, that is a frikking orgy
The three of them tickled my whole jar of pickles.
I have watched this video at least 12 times (with a month or so between, maybe more) and I swear I have never ever tired of it and it is still just as incredible as the first time I watched it. This has to be one of the best motoring videos on YT. Thank you Mr. Harris for enriching my life with this and allowing me to hero-worship some as well.
Had to revisit this vid...one of my favorites. Love all of these cars and drivers so much!
