Great video! I live in Orkney. In reality, entering Scapa Flow via this route would have posed considerably more challenge. Several islands are unmodelled by the game (I live on one of them, hehe). The eastern approach to the Flow that you used would involve navigating the unmodelled islands of Lamb Holm, Burray, Hunda and Glimps Holm, most of which still have evidence of military presence, though I'm not sure how much was naval defences. And by this stage the already shallow water between these islands may well have been unpassable due to the early stages of construction of the Churchill Barriers, though I'm not sure exactly how much stone had been laid down at this stage. Of course none of that takes away from the fact that this was a blast to watch. :)
Wolfpack, I heard a message from the British in the BDU, they ask to please stop sinking the Nelson, apperantly the sailors start thinking she's cursed
Great video and thanks! My two cents: If the target is stationary than Angle on Bow and Range are meaningless. AoB tells the TDC the change in range (+/-) at any future moment and it (along with speed) calculates lead angle. Therefore, if the target speed is zero, than lead is...well...zero. Meaning, AoB is irrelevant. If the input speed is "Zero", than the ONLY other factor needed to hit is the bearing. Even Range can be ignored as the fish will follow the bearing until it hits or runs out of "go juice". Good luck and Good Hunting

My family is mostly Orcadian, it's a wonderful place and this was really neat! A bicyclist also saw the Sub but didn't raise any alarm as he didn't realise it was an enemy ship. The gap between the Sou. Eastern Road of St. Anne's and Lamb Holm, the mainland and island you went between (where the Churchill barriers would go) is thinner in reality. The scope of the map seems a bit off, but not drastically. Mind, it might be the way I'm interpreting the map. I actually have a 1940 version from Günther Priens book "Mein weg nach Scapa Flow" its a good read if you are interested in commercial shipping during the 20s (Surprisingly it even has pictures).

Looks like the Corvette was modelled after HMCS Snowberry K166. I've built a couple models of it through the years. Revell make a pretty decent kit that's very easy to convert to remote control. Great fun.
I did this mission multiple times but I've never succeeded in escaping Scapa Flow. Günter Prien was also very lucky in 1939. Most people say he was unlucky because there were almost no ships in Scapa Flow but I think that he was lucky with that so that he could escape without being seen. A few hours after he escaped the British launched a destroyer to search for him. They first didn't realize it was a U-boat and weren't prepared for it.Thats the only time an enemy U-boat had successfully attacked Scapa Flow(until now). In my opinion it's the most successful U-boat operation after paukenschlag (drumbeat). Even though Prien sunk just 1 ship (HMS Royal ark), he definitely ruined the British moral. Scapa Flow was evacuated after that and in the proces another few ships were sunk by German mines. Nice video btw 😉

That 5th Torpedo was a beautiful shot but with the list I imagine that with it running shallow you likely struck the deck armor. Granted I'm pretty sure 5 torpedo hits with that sort of flooding spread is going to be fatal for a crew that is sitting in harbor not expecting to need damage control.
Wow. I did this mission multiple times. Nelson wasn't there, it was further out near the OG mission pip or farther West. I had to try to sneak past 10-15 destroyers. I didn't even fire. They heard my electric motors on ahead slow at 20m depth from over 1km away and blew the crap out of me. All four tries. Even after scouting it with the headquarters mission I STILL got blown to bits almost instantly while dodging the sub nets and mines. I don't understand how that black swan didn't see or hear you at 2.5Km and immediately drag you with depth charges. The one time I fired at anything I ended up with 8 destroyers on me with in 2 minutes.
I thought the battleship would be in the port. I thought the game wouldn't be leading me by the nose to the location of the boat, instead leading me to the bay or whatever. Four tries later, I found out there IS no port. Four tries of different levels of sneakiness; depth control; speed control; crew management, and frustration. Then I find your video. You stroll in without submerging, not giving a shit, happily accidentally spot your mission target, shoot it, and leave. After taking a page from your book, I also went in on the surface. I also spotted the battleship easily. Then the fog came, making my AI lose the target and the TDC settings I'd input every time I locked the target. Then I found out the hard way that the torpedoes have a max range of 5km, wasting 4, while at the same time the stern torpedo decided it also wanted a go despite me never actually flooding tube 5. This left me with 4 more bow torpedoes and 1 stern. Firing off the 4 bow torpedoes, 2 decided to run off in a random 45 degree angle while 1 was a dud and the other actually did quite well. Not enough to sink the ship, though! But GODDAMN, this was 4 hours of my life! Time to go make dinner, I think.
Haha loved it and when I did this mission I just shot full speed right through and launched as many torps as I could cause they spotted me before I could get sights on the battleship
U-Boot crews hated destroyers with a passion. when they found one stationary near the coast and no other high threat around, they got torpedoed. High command might be angry you "wasted" 2 torpedoes on a destroyer, but any other u-boot crew will praise your crew for it. and sinking any ship on a run is better than searching for big fish and returning to the harbour with torpedoes left on your u-boot. In fact, early in the war, some K'Leut's rather "wasted" torpedoes in the books and firering them into the ocean than returning home with them.
I feel like the eastern approach should have several scuttled ships and be a lot narrower and shallower if memory serves. Silent hunter 3 modelled that quite nicely ( may of been the GWX mod though, can’t remember for sure) I remember having to be very careful fitting between the scuttled corpses and feeling very vulnerable
By the way, I recommend the Sinking Physics overhaul mod. It eliminates such absurdities when you have to launch countless torpedoes at the target in order to sink it, remember there such actions when I hit a destroyer with a torpedo and he had "life" that the green bar was barely visible and only one shot was enough after surfacing. 8,8 guns to sink it. in practice it looked funny because the ship was 80% underwater, only the bow was sticking out. Thanks to this mod, such situations do not happen anymore
@@Wolfpack345 it looks like the small islands and block ships (original plus ones added after Prien’s raid) are not modelled in the East passage which is a bit of a bummer :/
@@jamesgriffiths7588 also I think there were several permanent causeways built that blocked off all shipping lanes with the exception of the three main entrances. I think the route Prien used was blocked off shortly thereafter by one of the causeways.
@@codydavenport8429 yeah that’s what I was getting at with my original comment but didn’t want to be too blunt. Realistically after 1939 the East Passage was a passage in name only and was fully blocked. Off the top of my head there were two or three block ships originally, and after Prien’s little escapade two or more additional ones were put in.
@@jamesgriffiths7588 the game is definitely looking better with this most recent update, but I find it weird the developers didn't pay a little more attention to detail on such a major base of Allied shipping.
That wasn't just any warship, it was actually THE Royal Oak. Well done Wolf. Just alive and well, two years after she was sunk by U-47... So, alternate history in game.
The probl with youtube is that use a VP9 codec and a reduced numbers off level. so the 0 to 255 levels in RBG become 16 to 236 in youtube codec. There is a color space setting in every all good photo/ video éditor to fix that or you ca do it manually with "light/contrast"...
Serious question about that torpedo mod you mention around the 11:00 mark. Is the action of "pre-heating" a torpedo historically accurate? Or just a feature of this game?
How the destroyers can't hear you when you are sailing at normal speed, I was doing a similar mission and after I put the "throttle" on, I immediately sounded the alarm and all the ships started looking for me, I immediately say that I had the cranoscope pump and other noisy things turned off before approaching the port
Would love to see more UBOAT. I know it's less realistic that the SH series, but the side-on cutaway or top-down views make it beautiful, easier to follow, and unique.
hard to imagine that no destroyer or other guard was patroling out of the approach channels, only inside Scapa flow... so this was a little bit too easy...
You are playing the excellent Il-2 1914-18 campaigns and I very much hope there will be a similar First World War UBOAT mod for us to enjoy the birth of underwater warfare
Nets, not sure if the are torpedo nets, are in game. If you came in through the eastern side as suggested by game submerged, you would have met the net from one shore to other. I tried to do this mission in preview 4, but they noticed me (not detected though) and in 5 seconds I had maybe 20 ships circling above me. This is crazy.
Damn you made it look easy, couldnt complete this mission for 3 hours, for me the warship was standing right in the middle of the bay surrounded by 10 or more smaller ships, it was impossible to get close to it undetected
That would be amazing but at the same time they could and should add more details to the subs surface ships ECT IMO and also not doing the scuttled fleet would also help with the running of the game cause too many details and you need a 7k PC lol just my insight is all
I enjoy these, thank you for the effort you put in and sharing it. I hope the developers correct the peculiarly slow movement of the rocker arm & pushrod assembly, take a look at the several examples of u-boot diesels of the period or any period, even at tick-over, but especially at full-chat, they have a purposeful rhythm and the absence of that in this game is jarring.
I don't know what everyone is complaining about, I perfectly see everything on your scope, are people looking through a toilet paper roll while watching the video or something ? Well played btw keeping your cool next to that destroyer, I'd definitely think that it would see me that close
24:31 The likely reason for the "minimal damage" was that the ship was already listing so badly that your torpedo impacted on the main armor belt instead of below it.

I heard “Milch Cows” though, and my ears pricked up XD
I'll have to try them out soon!
I did it on Oct 14 js like real life
good to see you back in the water or under :) i do miss flying circus i really enjoy you vids thanks man :)
Thanks for watching! Flying circus will make a comeback. I just need to find the time.
I binge watched the entire playlist and now I have some bigger fish to fry
The probl with youtube is that use a VP9 codec and a reduced numbers off level. so the 0 to 255 levels in RBG become 16 to 236 in youtube codec.
There is a color space setting in every all good photo/ video éditor to fix that or you ca do it manually with "light/contrast"...
Serious question about that torpedo mod you mention around the 11:00 mark. Is the action of "pre-heating" a torpedo historically accurate? Or just a feature of this game?
Electric torpedoes would be warmed up once a day.
26:29 One of your crewmates vented
I also did this mission but submerged and in broad daylight so that went as well as you would think.
Great brief and introducing the game. Good job...
How the destroyers can't hear you when you are sailing at normal speed, I was doing a similar mission and after I put the "throttle" on, I immediately sounded the alarm and all the ships started looking for me, I immediately say that I had the cranoscope pump and other noisy things turned off before approaching the port
I had so much anticipation for this episode
I'm glad to hear it's less "micro-mangey" because it was not a U Boot game it was a crew babysitting game
Finally! So excited for this!
Would love to see more UBOAT. I know it's less realistic that the SH series, but the side-on cutaway or top-down views make it beautiful, easier to follow, and unique.
be more interesting to hear more of the crew. SH series was really good added immersion( of course mods added "Das boot", voices
ouhh new patch ! :D ouuhh NEW wolfy Subby !
what a nice day
man i miss Friday Silent Hunter uploads
What a perfect way to end my Friday
did not see which mods you are using in the game in the description
Gonna have to jump back on after hearing about the updates. Love that bulkhead button being added!
hard to imagine that no destroyer or other guard was patroling out of the approach channels, only inside Scapa flow... so this was a little bit too easy...
just like pearl harbor
It's way more fun escaping through the South though since you have to deal with naval mines XD
I would imagine tube #5 hit the main belt, which was 14 inches/ ~350mm thick. Might need a little more oomph to break through that chunk.
0:34 after the sinking of the royal oak? Did i miss an episode or something? I don't get it
It's something that happened in real life. A u boot snuck into Scapa Flow and sunk an r-class battleship called The Royal Oak.
@@EneTheGene oh okay. Nice to know
@@brianriphagen9074 Happy to be of help :)
Just got a new gaming pc, can’t wait to get this game
I'm starting to think it might be time to buy this game, looking good!
It is getting better for sure.
I should have guessed that I'm not the only one waiting for a convincing enough Wolfpack video to buy it :)
I love this series
Happy to hear it.
The 2 groups of warships North of Scapa Flow just have that scent of staging operation for Illustrious Class CV and King George V BBs.
31:03 - I'm surprised at the lack of dudes.
Gato class: we heard you wanted to borrow some Mk-14s?…
Damn you made it look easy, couldnt complete this mission for 3 hours, for me the warship was standing right in the middle of the bay surrounded by 10 or more smaller ships, it was impossible to get close to it undetected
This update is amazing.
It is pretty good. Lots good additions
I wonder if the High Seas Fleet scuttled in Scapa Flow is modeled in the game
That would be amazing but at the same time they could and should add more details to the subs surface ships ECT IMO and also not doing the scuttled fleet would also help with the running of the game cause too many details and you need a 7k PC lol just my insight is all
Or maybe be able to turn on and off some of the details such as that? Might be cool
You got the date right Wolfpack..10/14/39 was the date the Royal Oak met it's end.
Here is a fine example, check at the time stamp provided: ua-cam.com/video/zLfa43_1WH8/v-deo.html
Wolfpack, good hunting my friend
27:00 thats why you should of been diving less sound and harder to see. esp if you are trying to sneak in.
Cool video bro👌🏻
I don't know what everyone is complaining about, I perfectly see everything on your scope, are people looking through a toilet paper roll while watching the video or something ?
Well played btw keeping your cool next to that destroyer, I'd definitely think that it would see me that close
0:33
For a Second I thought you would say HMS hood
Your all good my friend nicely done
