    I ended up using gas that was old and it caused me to take the carburetor and check the gas plug. It was the old gas. Thanks for the great tips.

    This is a great little video, and it helped me get my pressure washer started after a year of not using it. Followed the method, and it started on the first pull. Thanks for doing this!!!!

    I found this after having problems starting my Lawnmaster Mower (NZ Brand) that has the GCV160 engine. This was only the second time we'd used the mower, but this time after a three month break because of winter and being away from home. The fuel was good and it had a spark and the spark plug looked clean, but it was not having it. I drained the float bowl, which also showed nice clean, non smelly, fuel, and checked the air cleaner just in case. The plug did not look wet when I took it out, so I think it was not getting enough fuel. Our previous mowers, shredders etc. have usually had a rubber pump button that richens the mix for starts, but I was not able to find one on this mower. Note my engine did not have the same carb cover as in this video, and the choke was engaged by pulling the throttle all the way back. It still didn't want to know, but after a while it did fire, and finally start. Note also that my starting technique involves pushing the mower away from me and pully the start chord HARD so I honestly don't think that was the issue. All in all I would expect a nearly new Honda engine to start like a dream, so I am a bit disappointed with today's performance. Fingers are crossed for the rest of the season.

      Thanks for commenting. From the description you gave it sounds like you have a gcv 160 with the "auto choke". The model in the video does not have that and it also does not have a variable throtle. I have heard auto choke has had some issues, and consumers are not wild about it. I've seen videos of guys bypassing/deleting the system all together. Best of luck.

    I bought one like that one 2 weeks ago I did everything manual said to do and it fired up on first pull but after I’ve shut it off and it won’t fire back up til after 30 to 45 minutes later, that’s the issue I’m having. It works great when it on

      Thanks for the comment. I have a couple troubleshooting type videos on my channel that may help. I'd start with the air filter just to make sure its clean. Then i'd check the spark plug and make sure its gapped correctly. After that I'd check the ignition coil. Make sure the wire that connects the ignition coil to the spark plug is snug. Make sure there isn't any excessive heat around the coil. When they get really hot they can fail to fire the spark plug. Once they cool down the problem disappears and it will fire right back up. An ignition coil for the Honda GCV160 is around 10 bucks. Air, compression, fuel, or spark is missing for some reason when its hot. The usual culprit in problems like these is metal expanding when hot and contracting when cold.

    Good point about the old gas losing its potency.
    I've never seen a spark plug in action, that was neat.

      I spent my working life at Ford UK Research & Engineering, later called Product Development, and since I retired, Campus. I was a mechanical engineer, but I did work on fuel systems, and the experts referred to old fuel as having its 'light ends' evaporated away. I first heard this term when we were working at Shell's research facility at Thornton (near Chester). To give this some context, we were doing fuel evaporation and vapour lock, tests on a MkII Cortina, so this would be in the late 60s. I must have still been an apprentice at that time. It was a cool experience. I remember the Shell engineers telling us that some huge percentage of an engine's wear and tear occurred immediately after starting. Lubricants and engine materials have improved immensely sine then - you might have expected as little as 60K miles before needing a reconditioned engine back then. We would expect nearer to 200K miles nowadays.

  • @TinaG-gg9nk

    Mine was surging then only running fully choked. I replaced the gas, put a new carburator on, new spark plug, removed the in tank fuel filter and added a clear in line filter. Now it won't start at all. I'm going to drain the gas again and add some SeaFoam. I ordered some OEM fuel filters and plan on removing the in line incase the gravity feed through the inline is too fine a filter for the carb to pull through. yes this pressure washer is pretty old but i've had it since new and performed oil changes on it 2 new pumps. I have yet to try the ethanol free gas.

    So i watched a few videos on this and I bought this unit new last year. Used this unit about twice and left old gas (about 3 quarters of a tank) and obviously when I tried to crank it over, nothing. Tried cleaning out the float bowl and check to see if carb was clogged and everything seemed good. Tried to start it after and still nothing.

    • @DIYAllied
      @DIYAllied  3 роки тому

      The only other thing off the top of my head is something possibly wrong with the ignition switch. I had a situation where my ignition switch got wet and it killed the engine and it would fire again until it dried out. Just a thought if its not firing at all.

    Hola,tengo una máquina de lavar igual a la del video,tengo problemas para encenderla,tira contraexplosiones por el carburador. Una vez enciende,funciona muy bien,si dejo que se le acabe la gasolina y se apaga,cuando recargo no quiere encender. Yá le lijé la volanta,lijé el magneto y lo calibré,(con el grosor de una tarjeta de presentación),el filtro de aire está bien,el sparkplug está bien,el cable de apagado estaba partido y le puse uno nuevo,la bolla del carburador está bien. Alguna sugerencia,gracias de antemano.

    • @somarpr
      @somarpr 2 роки тому

      Yo cmbiaría el carburador o lo limpio. Hay líquidos para prenderlo en vivo y sacarle lo pegado. Tambien el orificio por donde se atomiza la gasolina podría estar medio tapado y por eso no te trabaja bien. Espero que ya la hayas reparado.

      DIY Allied yes - replaced with new ethanol free gas and removed carburetor (3rd time) took the internal jets out and sprayed (soaked) all with carb cleaner. Now it runs with 3/4 of the choke open; dies immediately on full open. Thanks for your response!!!

    My GVC is hard to start after being stored for any length of time. It will need 15 to 20 pull to get it going and then runs great. It was like this out of the box. If i pull the plug and prime it with a squirt of gas it will again take right off and run great. Any suggestions as to the problem?This is probably a dumb question but is there any way to add an aftermarket primer bulb?

    • @DIYAllied

    So you can drain old gas, but what if old gas is in the carburetor already? Will draining it from the tank and putting new gas in be enough? Or how to do clear it from carburetor?

    • @fanfeck2844
      @fanfeck2844 3 роки тому +4

      trencher7 , just unscrew the float bowl cover under the carb. You won’t need to remove it unless you want to wipe round inside of bowl. If you loosen the screw petrol should seep out gradually past it

      You may have water pressure built up, which makes it very hard to pull. Pull the trigger on the wand to release the pressure and try again. This is a common issue when re-starting after using for a while.
