What I really like about Eric is the look in his eyes that says he is thinking about what he is singing. He is not there for the crowds adoration, he is there to make a statement.
In the early days, Bruce Springsteen used to do this song a lot. Bruce did not cover the Beatles or the Stones, but he did the Animals. He definitely was a cat coming in from the outside, with Steve Van Zandt.
Eric Burdon should've been casted as a villain character for the Twilight Zone, Night Gallery and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. I think some of the Hollywood producers and television writers back in the 1960's missed the boat on that one.
@afr malatesta yup... and I was only 10 yrs. old so he was kinda scary at the same time, but I guess that goes with the bad boy demeanor as well. 🙆Oh well... live and learn 😘🙋🤗
The Blues is just a good person feeling bad. There were quite a few great young rock artist that were born either during or just after WW 2. London and many of the industrial cities of England, were in ashes. They were very tough times. The Blues are born thru adversity and tough times. All drew on inspiration from the old American Bluesmen and the ruin that they grew up in.
This is sung live. Eric has great timing. What a voice. Economical in body movements and facial expressions, and he looks at the audience intensely. IMO it feels like his stage persona owes much to John Lee Hooker's delivery. "So I was given the job of minding John Lee Hooker when he came over, showing him around. I also used to sign his autographs; at that time he couldn’t even write his own name." The Animals covered Boom Boom and other Hooker songs. Hooker visited the UK June-Nov 1964 and supported several rock/pop bands.
like all classics, this song doesn't date, powerful driving guitars, and wonderful rebellious vocals. I like how Eric at the end of the song, has a hand clap going, so he can time his vocal interjections. The best thing the Animals ever did.........
Eric had such a strong voice and he sung so effortlessly, with such soulfulness. The late, great Sammy Davis Jr. thought very, very highly of Eric and that speaks volumes.
this is for all the young ones hearing this now or recently,he was adriving force on the radio in the 60's as matter of Fact i'll be bold and say he was the BRITISH INVASION,his music was way different, his bass player and guitarist, were unreal for the time period,if you ever wondered what the rolling stones and jimi hendrix -eric clapton listen to,it was this guy and his sound, don't let me be misunderstood-we gotta get out of here --memorable,find myself humming still after 40+ yrs--
I am 58 years old and still LOVIN' it!!!!!! The Animals indeed "Blew the Stones away!!!!!!!!! Great sounding six-string Sounds like a twelve-string electric!!!!!! Thanks for sharing this masterpiece.

Awesome group and ahead of their time. They had some really good riffs and were a bit darker and deeper than many of their fellow British invasion bands.
Eric Burdon increíble voz de negro (sin mal interpretar y soy negro) , uno de los mejores en este genero para recordar y disfrutar aquellos años 60 donde muchos quisiéramos haber nacido o regresar a esos tiempos.
something about the animals' songs (i think it was Eric, just sayin)... you just felt cool for listening to them... and then you watch Eric and your heart swoons... sigh... :)
This was one of my favs of theirs. I like Don't Let Me be Misunderstood. And House of the Rising Sun of course.. I don't know if he's still playing but I found a live performance of his on UA-cam. I think it was in the late 90s and he had a whole new outlook on his songs as he sang them newer.
Eric Burdon is 5'7" in height. Birthdate May 11, 1941, born in Newcastle-upon-the-Tyne, England. He is so handsome, cute, sexy and has a great soulful, bluesy voice. I had a big crush on him when I was 16 in 1964. ;-)
Not certain about that 5'7" part. I know some sites say that. Maybe 5'6". The other band members are much taller but Eric Burdon had so much charisma, just overwhelming. Love him. When lead singers had that magnetism and he sure did have it!
His voice kicked ass... He was a better vocalist than Jagger and Lennon/McCartney.. Eric Burdon should've gone on to heavy rock stardom like Led Zeppelin and the Who. 🎸🎤🎼

Having lived for 15 years in Asia, a place where there is only conformity and a total lack of personal independence, I appreciate how rebellious and individualistic this song is. It makes me proud to be a Westerner.

Wow. What a thoroughly thoughtful, articulate post you have written. I am simply mesmerized by Eric Burdon - his looks, his talent, his delivery of that talent, sure, his eyes....he had the total package didn't he? Lol. No pun intended! Again, I say that those were the days when many lead singers were of shorter stature but huge on appearance, charisma, talent and the ability to get across a song's message. I found him so sexy. I am sure I was behind some closed door somewhere when someone like him was handed out. Fate never gave me an Eric Burdon!

Nice comment; however, The Yardbirds did not have a keyboard as part of their regular instrumental lineup. I can think of only two tracks on which they used one: "For Your Love" (harpsichord played by Brian Auger) and an album track, "Farewell" (piano-based, not sure who played it). The REALLY bad boys of rock!!!
Best British Invasion record ever made even though it was written by a pair of NYC songwriters.
What I really like about Eric is the look in his eyes that says he is thinking about what he is singing. He is not there for the crowds adoration, he is there to make a statement.
So True
Absolutely. He has conviction when he sings which is rare. Cool!
Yes, he makes you think he’s lived every single word of every song he’s ever sang!
And he was there to live that statement, and did to the hilt.
Soul food, best on the menu.
Wow, 46 years later this song is still relevant. RESPECT
It's more relevant now in this era of conformity, cowardice, and anti-Eros.
In the early days, Bruce Springsteen used to do this song a lot. Bruce did not cover the Beatles or the Stones, but he did the Animals. He definitely was a cat coming in from the outside, with Steve Van Zandt.
He is totally original and authentic. Fantastic to see without playing to the cameras. Fantastic one of a kind voice and so cool!
That was live sounded fantastic!
From a time when musicians had talent.
Saw them in Detroit 1967. I was 16. I was in heaven
Omg, so lucky!!
Some hints of rap with this song.
He gave off a bit of an aura of
Muhammad Ali!!!
Lucky😁
Lucky you man...respect.
You lucky girl. Did you walk out of that concert the same person? Or already, as Eric's friend Jimi would title, "Experienced?"
That voice coming from that face..wow !! 😍
Eric Burdon should've been casted as a villain character for the Twilight Zone, Night Gallery and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. I think some of the Hollywood producers and television writers back in the 1960's missed the boat on that one.

True
Brilliant track...and Eric's voice is epic!
I was ann8 year old juvenile delinquent year 1964-65;. And, this was a bad ass tune .

Love this song. It sounds like he messes up the chorus the first time. He missed the “And baby” but it still sounds so good! Eric was the man!
Always loved the Animals. Eric Burden is the man!!!
Yes
Ah, he sure is and was
He was just a monster, no one else comes close, ridiculously ahead of his time
Nick Williams lived the blues...true musician
I was just thinking the same thing.
So True a true blues man
Ahead of his time for sure and has not aged either. He is still so current 🎤🎶

Seriously crushing..........as a teen and even now.
I love that echo in his voice, it's pretty powerful in this video....and pretty cool.
No the echo is from the mic!!
These guys are so freaking good! Eric's got major chops.
Eric had such a strong voice and he sung so effortlessly, with such soulfulness.
The late, great Sammy Davis Jr. thought very, very highly of Eric and that speaks volumes.
Great classic done absolutely live by Eric and the Animals!! Couldn't ask for anything better!! Long Live The Animals, Long May They Roam!
it's not live. the guitars don't even have cables connected to them.
Éric Burdon a 200 de QI et le coeur qui va avec , donc c'est juste MERCI ♥ .
Remember when this came out late 64 actually when I was 8years old . Also, unfortunately sent to NAM from 1965 to 1969.
Love Eric Burdon. I miss this sound.

Legend
lyrics
It's a hard world to get a break in
All the good things have been taken
But girl there are ways
To make certain things pay
Though I'm dressed in these rags
I'll wear sable some day
Hear what I say
I'm gonna ride the serpent
No more time spent sweatin' rent
Hear my command
I'm breakin' loose, it ain't no use
Holdin' me down, stick around
And baby, baby
Remember, remember
It's my life and I'll do what I want
It's my mind and I'll think like I want
Show me I'm wrong, hurt me sometime
But some day I'll treat you real fine
There'll be women and their fortunes
Who just want to mother orphans
Are you gonna cry
While I'm squeezin' them dry
Takin' all I can get, no regrets
When I, openly lie
And live on their money
Believe me honey, that money
Can you believe, I ain't no saint
No complaints
So girl throw out
Any doubt
And baby (baby)
Remember (remember)
It's my life and I'll do what I want
It's my mind and I'll think like I want
Show me I'm wrong, hurt me sometime
But some day I'll treat you real fine
(It's my life and I'll do what I want) Don't push me
(It's my mind and I'll think like I want) It's my life
(It's my life and I'll do what I want) And I can do what I want
(It's my mind and I'll think like I want) You can't tell me
(It's my life and I'll do what I want)

The animals & yardbirds are my favorite examples of a 1960s era rock band. The almost Baroque sound produced by the keyboard in both bands personify 1960s music for me with their ominous twang and melodic continuum. I wish i had gotten to live in this time period.
