      @@cyanado2697 Yes, I thought it was excellent. Such interesting concepts were touched on and explored. During the season I loved that the 100 eyed lad, who was a reoccurring villain throughout the sets, was just an edgy fellow inmate who was a danger in a single episode. Not exactly sure why he told MK everything he did but I'm interested in finding out

      Not trying to stir the pot, just saying that I mostly agree over the writing but the medium's also just as much of the message IMO. Got taken out of the best moments by a lot of the visual jank on re-watches :(

      Ehhh, The writing was flimsy, and the season felt SUPER rushed compared to the other seasons. Doesn't help the fact we're now stuck with perma dookie-butt quality animation for the rest of the series.

    We should give Wild Brain a break like you said they probably had to work overtime and even though I don’t like the use of the 3D models I think that was the choice they were left with for the season and if Monkie Kid really is coming to an end next year I hope it goes out with a bang.

      That's also one of the things right? Like, usually when a show has a chance, the whole show suffers. And yes, granted, in those first few seconds I could already tell the animation changed. But if the show isn't different, who cares.
      Tbf tho, the new styles gonna take some getting used to 💀

  • @WinterRabbit1
    @WinterRabbit1 Місяць тому +85

    Honestly, considering the inconsistencies from the pilot and the first season compared to what we got in later seasons, even Flying Bark needed time to get used to animating Lego style characters. So it doesn’t surprise me that WiledBrain needs to get used to the style, too.
    The writing is still great, and the quality drop isn’t a serve as I was expecting when I saw people’s reactions.
    Also, considering WildBrain isn’t unionized and Flying Bark is, it’s possible that had a hand in things too.

    • @BuizelCream
      @BuizelCream Місяць тому +8

      Their puppet rigging did get better as the Season progressed, I noticed. What I can hope for future seasons is seeing them increase the sophistication of their 2D rigging techniques that it adds more dimension to the movements, making their models appear less paper doll like if it's necessary for the style of the scene.

  • @cyanado2697
    @cyanado2697 Місяць тому +105

    Wildbrain did a pretty good job at recreating the animation style as best they could, given they specialize more in 3D shows...plus it did get better as the season progressed and it was their first attempt, I feel like with some practice and getting used to the style they will nail it.

    I feel like it may not be my place to say since I don't watch the series.
    But if you're going to judge an established animated series strictly because the animation change, and not based on the story, or the characters, or how consistent the world is at this point.
    Then you're not really being fair to it especially since they really didn't have a choice.
    Both parties chose to part ways, and I'm sure wild brain given enough time will be able to fully emulate what flying bark had previously done.

    From the sounds of it, season five suffered a time crunch purely in the appearance stage. All the scripts and voice acting was great as always. I have a feeling that season six (fingers crossed it's renewed) will be given more time for the animators to perfect the art style. I only just got into this show a week ago and was very nervous to start watching season five since I'd heard rumors but hated spoilers enough not to know why. So all four seasons I was expecting the second coming of Game of Thrones season 8 but season five was great! It was a little off in the animation but I would've just assumed the mechs were swapped to CGI to save money like a lot of anime is currently doing. I don't think I would've noticed it was a different art studio if I hadn't been told.

    4:05 im sorry, idk who you asked but i could tell the difference IMMEDIATELY though honestly it was kinda fun to point out all the differences. at the end of the day, the animation in season 5 was definitely "worse" but it certainly isnt bad animation by any means. I definitely still felt the same humor, story, and characters that i always loved about the show. Im hoping that now that they've settled in the groove of things, the next season's animation will have more time put into it and look a lot better.
    i have to admit tho, i think it was hilarious that 90% of the fans thought the trailer for the new season was fake XD (sadly i was one of those, my bad wildbrain you're doing your best sweeties) season 5 was still extremely enjoyable though, i can't wait to watch in english and im still excited for season 6

    What made me saddest about all this wasn't the quality of the animation, it wasn't the change of studio or anything like that. But yes, the lack of respect that some "fans" had towards the animators, threatening them, as if the program had been discontinued. Honestly, this made me a lot sadder. The quality isn't bad (obviously we were used to Flying Bark's animation), they are learning! In fact, the animation is "similar" to that of the pilot episode. They will improve over time.

    This is true, it’s technically no one‘s fault that season five did not meet everyone’s expectations, but that does not mean there could have been other options. The best idea I can come up with as a fan of the series, is to push back certain deadlines. Obviously, that’s easier said than done, I don’t know anything about how an animation studio is normally run, but I think larger animation company’s should take a lesson from newer Studios. Within the past few years, new animation studios have been created to make amazing shows, like helluva boss, hazben hotel, murder drones, Lackadasy, the amazing digital circus, you name it! The difference between these shows, and works created by larger companies, is that the larger animation companies seem to have less time for production. This is the main reason why the animation for this show is so drastically different compared to its previous seasons. Whenever a deadline needs to be met, it usually goes unchanged, however, certain studios like glitch productions seem like they ignore this rule. My favorite thing about glitch productions is that they take all the time they need necessary in order to complete the next episode. Even when murder drones was still in production for its first episode, they had no idea when it was going to release, this fact is also obvious based on the teasers they had for the first episode. Overall, I think larger company’s should take more time to create the shows and movies they want to create, rather than trying to rush their Work by setting up a deadline. Taking the time necessary to create what you love, is the key to making something truly great, and something that everyone can enjoy.
    Let me know if I missed anything to consider.

Just let the fans air out their concerns, like I did, and then enjoy S5 for what it is, hoping the rest of the fandom can move on just as maturely.

      They are also using puppet animation. It isn't hand animated like Flying Bark. It got better near the end, and now that they're on less of a time crunch they could probably make it better next season. They do need work tweaking thier models. In the beginning it was very evident, and the line thicknesses were off too. However, they were still very expressive. I hope that Wildbrain can learn to use their animation as a visual storytelling device like Flying Bark did. Flying Bark had made it a story within a story at times with how alive everything was. When I say that the story suffered even though the writing stayed the same, that’s why I say it. The story within the story feels like it’s been removed for the time being. You’re right, though. There was too much crunch time to really plan out that kind of detail. Here’s to hoping for the season 5 special and season 6!

    I absolutely love Monkie Kid, its my fav show and it's been fun to advertise it to my friends as THE lego anime. And i of course felt heart broken at the animation team switch.
    For a 2d animated show, animation is kinda huge for the identity of the show, at least to me. being able to identify the artstyle and animation is like a game for me, being able to pin point reused animation has been fun for me to watch on this show. So, when i first saw the season 5 trailer of monkie kid...ok i may have cried.
    I dont think there's anything wrong with being disappointed in a downgrade of quality, its the reaction you have that makes it important. So, i of course didnt make it a big deal to be rude to anyone, just voice my opinion and disappointment with the downgrade.
    Thankfully tho with WildBrain, theyre good at emulating a style. Its really easy for me to tell that its all rigged, but with the switch of animation studios, i was also really worried that they wouldn't match the energy and humor. Thankfully, Wild brain is good at mastering the visual gags and the visual quirks of the og style flying bark had.
    Oh but i will say the mech scenes of the new season are downright ugly, but the only person im blaming is myself for having such high standards.

    Honestly i feel like season 5 was already the conclusion to the second arc and the third one is about to start with season 6 so i am pretty sure there’ll be more, there’s also been someone (i think it was thr person who‘s currently sharing some concept art on twitter) who said that there was enough material they could still adapt for a while (before a ninjago crossover would happen) so i honestly think we’re far from the end. As for the animation, i‘m sure it’ll get better. Like it’s already really good, especially given the circumstances. Sure it’s not flying bark Season 3&4 quality but i‘m convinced when given enough time, wildbrain can deliver equally.

    for an animation studio that specialized in 3d animation. this 2d animation that they did is actually not as bad as expected. its rough in a little areas but still they cooked in the fight scenes

    The writing is still there but the animation is a little stiff, but I’m sure it’s because the studio is just getting use to this art style. For example, season 1 of MK animation wise was wonky and off character model all over the place. It got hella better afterwards but this stands to show that not every first attempt is going to look great. This is the same for the new studio, they might improve later. The only thing I miss is the squish and pull animation of the faces and body language we had before, otherwise the quality is still pretty great. 😊

    I am happy the the character interactions and the stellar story writing are just as good and the animation was still good for the short time the studio got to animate season 5!

I didn’t know the season had come out but I saw one of the usual clip compilation videos pop up in my recommended so I started watching it and immediately I noticed some was off. And the longer I watched the clips the more I noticed it so I figured there had to be a studio change or something

    It took me 5 seconds to notice the animation change but they had done such a good job maintaining the essence of the show it didn’t bother me too much. Were the fight scenes disappointing? Yes but it wasn’t horrendous. I feel now the animation studio won’t be on such a time crunch they can do wonders for the show.

    While I definitely prefer pre s4's animations, s5's animation isn't really that bad, I'd say it's pretty good for rigging and at times they can nail the animation/flow well in my eyes. Sucks that the fans reacted so harshly to a team that was probably stressing to get s5 out in time.

    Thank you for saying that we can't blame anyone, because we really can't Wild Brain after all, even though the animation wasn't 100% they took a lot of care and in my opinion it's not that bad in several moments I didn't feel any difference. And the script is incredible, they made it look like LMK, with jokes, character evolution, personality, etc...
    Like I said, I don't care if the animation isn't that good, but it has a good script.
    And I think that LMK will have more than 6 seasons, because it has a very vast universe to explore with characters that need more prominence

    I hadn't known that Wildbrain had any preexisting history with Lego, tbh (or Carmen Sandiego, for that matter, lol; I still have yet to see that, but it's on my list of things I may or may not ever get around to watching- the intent is there, but is heavily reliant on motivation + consistent internet connection & speeds, sadly); my own familiarity with them stems from when they used to go by DHX- and they were the ones responsible for the juggernaut that was My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Whatever your personal opinion on the show itself is (I personally always felt that it was kind of mid, but it was also very much not made with my demographic in mind lmao), you can't really say that the animation was at all a weak point, especially in later seasons when more budget was allotted to the series' animation, and that plus time and experience made rigs and techniques see steady improvement (unlike the writing, which got arguably kind of worse in some of them; but that's not related tbh). And having seen the season myself, it's... not terrible! Stiff at times, like you said; also weirdly floaty in the way that rig animation tends to be. Like, you're REALLY aware that that's a puppet; it would be fine in almost any other series, but not in one that didn't start out that way; it's uncanny somehow, noticeable in its differences. Kind of like the uncanny valley in CGI where no matter how good something looks, it still feels off in many ways bc we already know it's not real. smth not dissimilar to that, I feel like.
    BUT! It's a pretty good style imitation, all things considered. Everything from the characters, the set design, and even the lines on the models themselves are faithful imitations of the original. They've even got some interesting rimlighting effects going on in some scenes; it's weird and fascinating, and leads me, inexpert opinion that I am, to believe that these are some pretty advanced rigs. They did a lot of new and interesting stuff with them; it's cool, and ultimately a net benefit to animation in general! Literally the only thing "wrong" with it, aside from the hiccups caused by the medium, is the medium in and of itself, because it is different than what people are used to. And with time, this might not even be an insurmountable issue.
    As for the quality of the story and writing? Pacing was a bit fast for my tastes, but that's a prevailing problem with animation in general these days and probably cannot be helped at this time. Outside of that? It feels as nice as ever, and was delivered beautifully by the outstanding voice cast. These folks really understand the assignment when it comes to screaming in agony/mental anguish LMAO. Jokes were still snappy and funny, serious moments still hit with the force of a truck; it's all good. Pacing is really a personal taste thing; I'd normally want them to draw out MK's origin story a little more than they did, but that's a minor, personal nitpick in the grand scheme of things. I'm still as addicted to this show as ever; these characters and this world has got me totally hooked, and if they really do allow for a little more time for a better product, then I'd be VERY pleased; nothing kills quality faster than rushing into things, after all. The wait would be agonizing, but I'd be willing to endure for the sake of a better end product.

    Loved this video! I feel like a lot of people took their anger out on LEGO only for the animation studio switch (like LEGO ripped LMK from FB's trembling hands or smtg), and while I'm not necessarily denying the *possibility* of 'greed' and going for the 'cheap' option, I still believe that we know way too little to be pointing any fingers. I really like how you took on a more nuanced and understanding tone, going over factors that could've affected Flying Bark's and LEGO's decisions before making the final assertion that both companies did what they thought was best for them (as they should).

    I don’t care if h get mad at me for what I’m about to say. I’m genuinely scared for wildbrain , because if they r being rushed by Lego and producing not so good quality, just imagine what could happen to NINJAGO , as of 2024 July , imo , NINJAGO is one of if not the best animated series in recent years, wild brain and got a step up with Netflix and it’s animation is at its peak rn ( besides s8 animation) so I don’t want the quality of NINJAGO to drastically decrease Because of stupid Lego rushing their animation workers. So seeing how lmk , dreamzz , and NDR are all being animated by one studio, I feel like they r milking their workers and if they don’t stop , eventually all shows will look like an unfinished Roblox game

    At first I was one of those fans who was iffy about the new animation when the trailer was dropped. Just like a few others, I even thought it was a "fanmade animation." I stopped believing that after talking with a friend about it and seeing Flying Bark's statement of them not doing season 5. And when time went on, I started to welcome the new animation style. Sure, I won't lie that I really do wish it was Flying Bark from time to time, but again, I still enjoyed what WildBrain gave us. Plus I really enjoyed season 5, ESPECIALLY from the looks of it them diving more into Macaque and Wukong's past. Loved season 5, can't wait for the specials (if they're continuing that) and for season 6!

    Honestly the new studio just need to get more into the animation style with time and not rush it if they want to reach the same quality studio before had. Otherwise they really did great job :) they kept it mostly 2D and are keeping with the story and stuff :) so kudos to them i still love it and yeah no one's at fault and those that just like to hate well why don't they personaly animate it if it's "that bad" like come on most of the time those that hate ignore how much work it takes to do some things >:T pathetic reason to hate tbh

    I know I am a person that doesn’t like to watch shows because of their ✨Aesthetic✨ *BUT* I have grown to attach to Lego monkey kid over the years. I have watched it, and the art style isn’t really that different it’s just animated differently I often find myself being submerged in the story, then rather than animation. Sure the animation does make it easier to get submerged in the story but it’s not the entire part of Lego monkey kid. Plus it’s nice to see this style of animation. It reminds me of the earlier seasons from Lego monkey kid but drawn better and with more references to go on
    I’m sorry that this is too long. I just really have a lot to say about this show

    The animation style bothers me because I can see the differences way too clearly. The story also felt a bit shakier this season, they cramped way too much in there and the sudden self avareness was disturbing and it broke my focus a lot. But those are, of course, subjective complaints from me. I hope quality will improve when they get proper time and funds to do so. And that they drop the self avare comments.
