As a veteran, this song touches my heart and soul and reminds me of my brothers in arms from long ago. Most people don't really understand that bond but this soulful song sums it up better than anything I know.
Not a veteran of any war but, i do think i understand. I will rest this here and... thank you for your service. Seeing the world today we dont deserve you mate. Hope you still have plenty of joyfull years!

I am 68 and still bear the scars of battle, i think back to a younger me full of piss and bravado until the rage of combat took my mates and tore my body. This song puts me back to the fleeting moments of the time that innocence left replaced by nightmares. I hope you are well and the call of fallen friends is quiet in your mind.
After 27 years as a police officer, 16 years in the reserve military, all the things I've seen, and how brutal humanity can be to one another, this song brings tears to my cheeks Every. Single. Time.
I was diagnosed with leukemia, given 30 % survivol rate, in 2002. I was 25 years old. I was very lucky to know that my older brother was a suitable stem cell donor. When we were younger we listened Dire Straits a lot and when in treatment this song came very meaningful to me as I was saved by my brother ❤️
My brother had leukemia, I donated my stem cells to him. It was successful at first, but he ended up dying a couple of months later. This album, specifically this song is amazing. my grandfather got me into Dire Straits, great band.

There isn’t a moment while listening to this beautiful song, that I don’t think of them, or all of our brave men and women in uniform. Thank you Mr. Knopfler for this extraordinary expression of our military members shared experiences. Maybe one day we might all make the leap beyond this insanity of harming each other with such precision, and work toward a different future. Here’s hoping that day arrives soon. Peace to all.
Until the power hungry control politicians realise that even if they control the world they aint gonna live forever, it will continue. Dec 2021 the outlook is grim.
What possesses a man to write this master piece of music about human nature and its effects? He certainly is touched with a gift very few guitarist will ever attain. I salute you Mark Knopfler.
I lost a friend in Afghanistan, I never served with him. Two different eras between us, But the pain is real, I'm sitting here listening to this and I'm in tears. This song hits home real hard. Thank you Sir.
The journey is never over, only the beginning. Brothers in arms both in combat and as civvies. God bless all those Men and Women we have lost across all nations to fight oppression and tyranny for the ultimate sacrifice our FREEDOM. We will see each other again and for that, I am certain. It is comforting to know our loved ones are already waiting for us to pass, before we see them again.
i cry for all human down they was falling in every war. And i cry for every veterans of war. My beloved father was a youg soldier with only 17 years in the second world war. He came home with one leg. He ist died with only 41 years.
I avoid this song as often as I can. I love it but it gets me every time and kicks me in the guts every time and I find myself crying like a baby. It brings back memories of uncertain times of despair and war and what the future might bring, but mostly and most tragically the loss of innocence. My wife always tries to convince me not to listen to it because as she says it's difficult to console me, nevertheless she always does it. She's an angel! Anyway, if this song gets you, you know for sure that you are still on the right side of things. Cheers and Peace!
Still baffles me that Mark Knoplfer doesn't get the same mainstream recognition as Clapton/SRV/Jeff Beck/Hendrix etc - he's an absolute genius who's style of playing is both instantly recognizable and nearly uncopyable.
Not sure about the mainstream part mate but there isn’t a guitarist, or anyone that gets guitar who doesn’t rate Mark Knopfler for his style and technique. He’s a genuine A-list guitarist
The guitar was invented long ago by craftsmen who knew that one day long in the future a man would step forward and use their invention as they dreamed it should be. He was mark knopfler

This performance is definitely one of the golden pages of music. Mark engraved his name in gold to the music history stone and this will never fade. This is music of eternity. This is music of our life. Thank you, Mark !

@@AS-lk2vm. Only partly true, mi amigo. Not all the time, but yes, sometimes. But more often than not, my experience?…..it isn’t for money that men and women go forth under arms. I was kid on holiday when I bought this iconic album and listened to it non stop on my new Walkman (a luxury for a working class boy in 1988). I sat on the 30th floor of a hotel on the Gold Coast, we were so high Mum wouldn't let us go out on the balcony! I love this record above all others.

One of the most insightful lyrics. I played the cold war as a submariner. Still pertained to us. Anytime a submarine went down we felt they were a brother in arms. We all fought the sea. And sometimes the sea wins. God speed and following winds my shipmates.
This will be my reflection song during the showing of a life well lived when I'm dead. At almost 73 years of age and with a grandfather who served on the Somme in the Light Horse, my Dad in the RAAF and me missing the " American War, as the Vietnamese people correctly call it, by one day, I totally comprehend the futility of war. Just look at where the world is now. Enough said. So, as family and friends head for a wake to be long remembered, " Going Home " from Local Hero shall send them to craft beer, exceptional wines, non-alcoholic beverages if required and to finish off, a selection of exceptional single malts. I just wish I could be there. And to you Mark Knofler, what a wonderful legacy you have bestowed on people who appreciate, respect, and absorbe the brilliance of your special gift of composition and sharing. I took my oldest daughter, who is now 40, to see you at the Sydney Entertainment Centre before it's was redeveloped. A wee tear slid from my eye when you sang two of my three favourite compositions. Slainte.
This is Mark Knopfler at one of best moments of his career, absolutely killing it with his 58 Les Paul. You'll go a long way to find anything better. Absolutely astounding.
Beautifull !!! Also funny to see how people waited for the very silence at the end to applaude in order not to miss a single part of a note : these are real fans !!!
As a musician, the hardest thing to do is to maintain your relationship with your songs. To remember what drove you to write it. And how we feel when it comes together. Music is how we remember our lives. The feelings that were so strong. But have faded. For me it's always a emotional revival. This ties us together.
I know that you will never read this, but Dire Straits was a huge part of my life growing up. Thank you so much for keeping the memories that I have left.
One of those moments when you can't hide your tears and you pray for peace all over the world. Thanks for sharing this amazing video and thanks to Mark Knopfler for this giant piece of music!
I was very young when I often went fishing with my father. We drove to a beautiful spot outside the city we lived in. During the ride he played a mix-tape with songs of Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac, Toto, Dire Straits, The Cure and Pink Floyd. I loved it, but as I child my mind could easily switch into other subjects. Years passed by, I got older and developed my own taste in music. Suddenly these artists and songs came back. We went fishing when I was 6 or 7. I got back to these songs when I was twenty or so. And now, at the age of 38, I listen to these songs over and over again. Thinking of those days. Of my father back then. Being there for me. Always. And he still is. Now I'm a father as well. Hopefully my kids will have the same memories when they are older. Memories about me. The current days. Their childhood. And the music they hear.
You're there. Be a dad and you're winning. I still have memories of music from my dad's time as a kid. Jim Reeves, Slim Whitman and several more. I have my own tastes now of course, but the songs I share with dad... man they are special. ( I'm about 12 year older than you... and my dad, being born in 1919 might be a bit older than yours :) )
I've been listening to this track since it was first released & it never fails to hit home. Just look at the times we're in. Look at how long love has managed to survive. Look at what we've endured through all the ages, and yet here we still are, but once again on the brink. Has there ever been a more poignant song written? And for times such as these? You are an absolute genius Mark! And I love you brother!
At 63 a song of my era. And my Grandfather's in WWI, my Father's in WWII, my Cousins in Vietnam, my Son in Iraq. And the post war agonies, suffering together, the same nightmares every night.... 💔☮️

I will always remember I have the chance to meet Mark and the rest of the Dire Straits band in 91 in New Zealand, I was security for them and Hot house flowers opened for them. It was raining and they sang "I can see clearly now" but the big thing for me was just how nice and down to earth Mark Knopfler was, he may not remember me but I will always remember him
I will never tire of this work of art, it's beautiful, poignant, painful yet transcends you to a place of deep transient thought. Thank you Mark, a true living legend paying tribute to all whom have fallen in war. May peace one day be our future, not war, famine and hate. God bless everyone reading this comment, may love and light always shine on you as you take this unknown journey through life. ❤️
Yeah, whilst he's absolutely schooling that guitar, he isn't over playing it. That's what i love about him and Gilmour, both of them play in a manner that lends itself to the song rather than making it all about their skills. Nothing worse than what would otherwise be a good song is ruined because the guitarist makes it all a bout them, and starts shredding and other nonsense.
Since I was very young I identified with the songs of Dire Straits, until now 48 years old, I see that this legacy passed on to my 23 year old son who admires Mark Knofler so much ... Congratulations
He is so humble, Mark can play the guitar with both hands, behind his back if he wants, instantly copy any other rif, lick, solo. He really should be, sir Mark
It's been relevant since for ever ... Since world has been waging wars. Including , Iraq , Syria, all the middle east killings , colonial and slave trade murders, civil wars etc. Feels especially poingnant now because it seem to be threatening the western economies and geographies after a very long time. Rest of the world has felt this way for ever.
At some point Mark's performance just made me stop and be entirely still and start filling up with deep sense of humanity, and some sadness, in other words, touched. Thank you

@@dkesti531 It's restraint, & the guitar is played not tortured as some guitarists do. I suppose it's the type of music but I think M K is sometimes underrated because he just plays the guitar with no fancy shenanigans. Mike Oldfield is my number 2

Aye, too many folk think modern greatness of a guitar is how fast you can shred it, when in reality, both Knopfler and Gilmour [Pink Floyd] can get their guitars to tell a story. A skill not many possess.

This song puts me back to the fleeting moments of the time that innocence left replaced by nightmares. I hope you are well and the call of fallen friends is quiet in your mind.
You are so right.
I wonder if this is our swan song? Please peace

I'm guessing he prefers it that way...?
Not sure about the mainstream part mate but there isn’t a guitarist, or anyone that gets guitar who doesn’t rate Mark Knopfler for his style and technique. He’s a genuine A-list guitarist

Dire Straits
These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms
Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I've witnessed your suffering
As the battle raged high
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms
There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones
Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line in your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

A wee tear slid from my eye when you sang two of my three favourite compositions.

definitely his best performance. The emotions, the beat, the harmony... heavenly
Beautifull !!! Also funny to see how people waited for the very silence at the end to applaude in order not to miss a single part of a note : these are real fans !!!
I admire him a lot because he respects all the artists who play with him, with his smile he motivates them all. His immortal songs.
This is a lesson to appreciate brilliant music, and stop the madness of war and hatred.
As a musician, the hardest thing to do is to maintain your relationship with your songs. To remember what drove you to write it. And how we feel when it comes together. Music is how we remember our lives. The feelings that were so strong. But have faded. For me it's always a emotional revival. This ties us together.

Makes you realise what really matters in life
I was very young when I often went fishing with my father.

Love Marks restraint in playing this version, to give his fellow musicians the spotlight they deserve. What a dude.
Yeah, whilst he's absolutely schooling that guitar, he isn't over playing it. That's what i love about him and Gilmour, both of them play in a manner that lends itself to the song rather than making it all about their skills. Nothing worse than what would otherwise be a good song is ruined because the guitarist makes it all a
bout them, and starts shredding and other nonsense.

At some point Mark's performance just made me stop and be entirely still and start filling up with deep sense of humanity, and some sadness, in other words, touched. Thank you
This.
This.
Touched by the Spirit of Love.
One of the greatest musicians I’ve ever witnessed live and online. Thank you Mark
Mark Knopfler : it’s been said has the most emotional playing style of anyone before. I love to listen to Mark, I have almost every song by him. There are two songs that will be played in the services when I’m laid to rest. Thank you Mark.
Dans un peu le même style il y a Joe Bonamassa qui est aussi à écouter...
Mark. It's about time you go live worldwide and perform this song... the world needs peace!!!!!!!!

During the darkest hour, happy to be here with you all, Brothers. [from the Italian North-West]

nemosi123 Yesss ! Siamo tutti Brothers in Arms
We are all brothers in these dark times. Stay well. ❤ Italy
Here in Puglia I found this song again whilst in hospital in Bari (bypass op). I’d forgotten just how special it is, really special. Thank you Mark 🏴
this is probably the most beautiful piece of music ever.
A doubt that but it's up their amongst the best musicians
Yes
Absolutely. Hauntingly beautiful.
I love this song its up there for sure but my number is still comfortably numb pompeii that long solo just defined how hard life is and at the same time how beautiful. No hate just lucky we have all these artist and youtube!
agreed
Es gibt viele gute Gitarristen, aber nur wenige, die Gefühle so vermitteln wie Mark Knopfler. Du nimmst mich immer wieder mit ❤️
18 years of Army Service and an Iraq veteran this song speaks to me like no other. I know its meaning is not what I feel but still it reaches a place that few songs can.
I’m an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran myself. Thank you for everything you’ve done. I agree with you about this song. It’s painfully beautiful. Amazing how it can both soothe and make you feel…. hollow at the same time.
@@melanielawrence4422 Thank you for your service and may God's blessings keep you safe.
A very few people have a special gift of poetry and musicianship. I'm not jealous I'm thankful.
Knopfler is a muse.
A very dear friend of mine, passed away a few years back. He played guitar his entire life and although he had many guitar heroes, Mr Knopfler, as he referred to him was his idol. Unfortunately, we parted ways and only reconnected a little prior to his passing. This is the song that we all said good bye with. RIP Keith
Mark knopfler was and will always be the greatest guitarist of all times
Just been crying on the phone with my dad. Man. God. I’m 50. He’s 73. He loves Comfortable Shoes. He a decent rhythm guitarist so am I but mark we watch you and think nah never in a million years of practice. We Rhythm guys. Back bone. But anyway. I remember 1985 Live aid I had my 3ltrs of Irn bru. Telly was mine for the day. 15. Wire trailing across the living room floor to tape it. Taped it on Betamax. And what did he do. He taped over it! Now we can relive it all. I’m a massive music fan and please kiddo. Never stop. And all those greats you love? Remember as daft as it seems prob to you. We think you are great. Thanks for the memories mark. Over the years I’ve leaned on u a bit. And your music has meant a lot.
To my dear friend and true brother, Vesa, who passed away recently. I miss you so!
Vesa was a big fan of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler.
His funeral will be held tomorrow 28.3.2020 and i will play this song over there!
:(
The man had great musical taste RIP
Your friend Vesa is going to heaven with one of his favorite songs RIP
Kimmo Laaksonen ❤️
So sad to read this. My actual bro died two months ago. We used to listen to this all the time when we were teenagers.i miss him SO much. This song makes me feel closer to him XX
The quitar is not an instrument to Mark; its part of his being, we are blessed to have it shared with us.
Ich lebe dich kocham ta muzyke ze swiat jak przyjechal moj brat w stanach ciezkich
was reading gas meter in his recording studio in W4 London for years... it's a pity I never met him...
this guy’s creative genius is from a different planet… not of this world !!❤
there are guitar players, there are good guitar players. there are excellent guitar players and there a brilliant guitar players. and few steps above that is Mark
You got that right 👍🤘👊
Lots of respect but david g is better
@@erezroth3284 we all have our opinions,I think Knopfler, you think Gilmour, others have Van Halen,Slash,Angus Young etc,it's all about who we like as our own individual choice don't you think
Ironically I think Mark's pauses in his playing are almost the most brilliant parts, and what make him my favorite guitarist. My two favorites, Gilmour and Knopfler both utilize silence. I think that is so important
@@dkesti531 It's restraint, & the guitar is played not tortured as some guitarists do. I suppose it's the type of music but I think M K is sometimes underrated because he just plays the guitar with no fancy shenanigans. Mike Oldfield is my number 2
Mark Knopfler it's not just playing the guitar. He is using it as an energy vibration transferring instrument. I am not just listening, I am feeling it from the heart spreading to my whole body. Hands down for sharing your phenomenal abilities on the guitar to us.
you are wrong. you don't know about guitar.
This song will be played at this soldier's funeral as they roll my casket out the church. Thank you!!
It couldn't be more appropriate, though I hope that will be a long time. This song is timeless because there will always be wars.
mine too
No sir, Thank You!
Not for a good while yet and not until the command to Rest Easy is given
I remember being part of Desert Storm as a member of the Brit forces... this song was played over the radio...I blubbed like a baby and still do for those brothers in arms who are still on patrol....
Doesn't matter where you people come from, doesn't matter your religion or your culture, this is universal!!! This song is one of those who will be forever on everybody playlists!! Wonderful song!!
who else can't hold back the tears. Superlative performance - a song that cuts to the core raising the spirit beyond our earthly confines.
I think Mark is one of the best guitar player in the world today
Without question
Yes thats right ❤
Aye, too many folk think modern greatness of a guitar is how fast you can shred it, when in reality, both Knopfler and Gilmour [Pink Floyd] can get their guitars to tell a story. A skill not many possess.
I could listen to him play forever.
@@profbawbag6604two of my favourite guitar players for sure..
One of those songs that forces men to cry.....
I am one of them.
Ones soldier - always soldier.
Stay strong soldiers of the world who must battle on, know that there are many who know your pain, sorrow& sacrifice....this was written for you😪
Impossibly emotional song. It's one that has always got to me and the way Mark performs it is something else. This music will literally be loved for ever. What a legacy
The understatement of this performance leaves me speechless...every time.
