My husband Gareth & I played this on cassette in the car over & over. We were together for 34 yrs. l lost him in 2020 to pancreatic cancer at 58 yrs old. This reminds me of you Gar & those times. All I do is miss you..... Love you always Gar
❤☮️🙏🏼
I know that feeling I lost mine a year ago of 34 years.
Hey Mark, if you happen to be sitting at the computer some day or evening and looking down at the comments. . . . Back in the day I had a paper route. First thing I did with the money was open a bank account. Mother made me. Second thing I did was buy a Dire Straits album. Played it til the tape fell out of the cassette. Now here I am an older dude, still listening. And I've got my own Juliet. A decade later and she still haunts my dreams. This is one of those songs where I stop playing along on my guitar and just listen. Take care, man. Great work, as always.
The good songwriters seem to help us tell our own stories, don't they? I remember saving to buy records.
Seems we have all had our Romeo's and Juliet's. That one you still think about. You still love no matter what. Mark captures that.
This song is so special to lots of people and it is to me also because i am waiting for him to call me.
Juliet loves Romeo♡x
Great comment
I had a paper route. Saved up for Love Over Gold. Glad I did. I still love him and have no gold! My Juliet loves me anyway. Music. Nothing else comes close.
Perhaps the most perfect piece of music ever written.
Agreed
Especially ❤ to hear Mark sing this song.
You only have to listen to the very end to see the respect from the audience. No anticipatory Whooping or clapping, just attentive awe, then eventually the heartfelt applause. Epic.
So true. You can't hear a pin drop but only true respect from All. How can one not respect this Genius that gave US so much.
Mark, "your golden heart"!
I always feel this song is hugely underrated. Hardly hear it on the mainstream radio. If the Beatles wrote this song it would be considered one of the greatest ever written. A masterpiece
Amen
It is one of the most brilliant "lost love" songs ever written. Highly literate and passionate. Just gets better with time.
Underrated by who? Song old 40+ years, and still owesome and aprechiated
@@ivanabonacicdoric8537 not by the radio stations, ask most people to list their top 10 love songs and this won't be in it
My favorite rock ballad ever.
Possibly the best version of Romeo and Juliet. Almost always brings a tear to my eye.
Great version, but nowhere near Alchemy-standard.
Dragonsneeze, I do so agree with you. These lyrics are sheer poetry, the song is timeless and goes straight to my heart.......
Mine too.
Dragonsneeze me too!
"Almost" Are you dead inside? Also use your real name? Are you like fucking 12?
This song hurts my heart every time I hear it. The early rendition came from the longing and pain of a young man. The older Romeo sings from a deeper, lingering remembered and still felt ache...
Thank you, Marilynn.
It is, as you suggest, that it looks at how the passage of time touches us all. Nifty pieces of writing.
This song takes me to thoughts of my Romeo ~ except he’s got the writings of a King 👑🫵🏻💞
and I can feel his words serenading my heart ❤
I am so grateful for his love ❤️💘
IMHO - The best version of this song I have ever heard. Mark did it again in bringing a tear to my eye. He is simply like no other guitarist in the world.
Right? I listen to this version relatively often and still it moves me every time.
The best version? Nah. Second best, but still miles behind On The Night. The piano&sax there were just absolutely magical
@@y.r._ Great comparison, but BIA has a personal impact on me as an X service member that lost dear friends.
@@bucstart I am not sure what Brothers in Arms has to do with discussing live version of Romeo and Juliet. Although the On The Night version of BIA is also the best out of all live performances of the song in my opinion.
Love this song so so much thank you mark god bless
This song touches my Soul! Would Love to see Mark in person! He's sooo talented!
5:09 - Mark's face makes me cry.
what is it about him? I just die every time i see this
omg damn. How did I miss that. Gut punch for sure. Thanks Tiago for pointing that out.
@@aspjake123 That goes deep man. Noticed that since the first time I watched this
Look at 3:00 to 3:35 too, where it fades to a different camera. The song is about Holly Vincent, an old flame, you can see there is still a lot of emotion there, this is probably the only video of this track where it's really apparent.
He certainly is a cutie and I wish he was mine
What ya gonna do about it? OMGosh, I SO love him.
My wife passed away in February at 32 years old (way too soon). I miss her a whole lot and listen to this song thinking of her. Dire Straits has been one of my favorites since I can remember hearing music and this song is a major reason why
Sorry for your wife. God give you strength to cope up. Dire Straits is healing. Touch of divinity
One of the best singers and guitar players in the world no contest in a league all of his own
All I can say is excellent❤
In the section between 3:20 and 3:45, the song slows to a softer beat, and Mark’s demeanor seems to suddenly become more somber. His voice takes on a huskier tone; his eyes grow softer and more contemplative; and the moment when head slightly tilted, his mouth strains with nearly uncontrolled emotion. This is what I love most about Mark Knopfler. He doesn’t just mouth words, he lives them. There are only a number of musicians I regret not having had the chance to go see perform live. Mark is on the top of that list.
I'd read that he wrote the song about his girlfriend of the time who heartlessly dumped him and hurt his heart... but when he's singing the song these many years later he seems to be feeling the lyrics emotionally, getting teary-eyed.
My take on that is not that he's remembering the girl from almost 20 years before, but likely that he was going through a painful divorce at the time.
I had the opportunity to see Mark and this band (mostly) perform here in Winnipeg at our Concert Hall. I went with a few friends and my wife. To this day we talk about that experience and agree it was the best live concert we've ever attended, bar none.
@@katiezee2 The girlfriend at the time was Holly Vincent. He does get very emotional when he sings this song, and I agree it can't be about the break-up from 20 years ago. So you make a good point that he might have been going through a painful divorce with his ex-wife, Lourdes. Does anyone know why they got divorced? I remember reading at the time they supposedly had a solid marriage so people were surprised about the divorce. I am happy for Mark that he certainly seems to have a happy marriage with Kitty. He is awesome and deserves to be happy.
same here, maybe he'll give it a ho once more at some point
I heard he got dumped by gorgeous Holly from Holly and the Italians. That would break anybodys heart!
never get sick of listening to mark
You are the best guitariste in the World Mark merci beaucoup 🎉🎉i
One of the greatest love songs ever, and maybe the best version of it
Yes it is the best version
Yep...I played this song in my wedding
Agreed.. beautiful song, and this performance is magical. I always tear up!
@@deejaydoubleyou1966 it’s highly emotional and vulnerable. Such as life...
Outstanding .
if this performance does not move you,, your not alive
Ya baby!!!
The best thing about Mark is that he's this unbelievably gifted master song writer, but seems so approachable as if you could sit down in the pub with him for a pint.
Rghttttt
About 1977 i was in the local laundrette in Deptford & asked a bloke sitting reading a book if he had any change for the machine. We got talking & mentioned line of work. He said he was a musician in a band & mentioned the name. Thought it was unusual, didn't think anything of it.. A few months later saw the band on TOTP
You could work a whole lifetime in music in the hope of writing a song like this. A truly timeless song.
So underrated. A great songwriter, guitarist and unique voice. He was, is dire straits. A great talent.
The power of Mark's music and lyrical poetry is unmatched...there's just no comparison, he can take your heart right out of your chest and pull a lifetime of your deepest memories out of you in ways you are helpless to resist. This is artistry of the highest order...thank you...just thank you for continuing to share this with the world.
Mark Hilliard de 5
ABSOLUTELY AGREE & THIS TUNE DOES JUST THAT!!!!!!!
And there's always amples of giftedness at the root of it all.
brilliancy worded
Power of music .....all the way to my heart in Serbia.
This was the first Dire Straits "single" I bought back in the day. Love, love, love Mark Knoppler xxxx ❤
Your music is absolutely beautiful Mark Knopfler.
This is the most emotional version i've seen....everything seemed scaled back just a touch and the song was more powerful for it. Bless his heart you could see he had stuff on his mind while this was filmed. The face he pulls when his voice breaks a little at 5:03 is just so telling. Beautiful beyond words.
I feel like he's really feeling the woman he wrote it about. Painful, beautiful song.
Bitter sweet memories
There are some songs that can just take your soul back to a very specific moment in time... and you are right back to that place, that feeling, that pain, that passion, that loss. This is one of those . I can hear the opening notes and it is like 35 years have stood still -- frozen.
Beautiful
Mark nails( aceses) this song. ❤
Mark is a true national treasure
My friend, he should be a UNESCO World Heritage Treasure 😉...
Mark Knopfler is one of those guitarists that never had to be told to turn down.
holy moses, that one of a kind recording.. but that piano man is oustanding.. thanks for the music you beautiful people
How can that not be more heartfelt and, just stunning?
Still love, love love this song. Mark's voice is sublime ❤xxxx
Incredible how a raspy voice can sound so elegant
I'm just going to put this on repeat for the rest of my life
Not saying anything new here but such a beautiful song. Those lucky lucky people in the audience. Thanks for sharing Mr Knopfler ❤
The greatest love song ever written.
Absolutely beautiful, great band as well
Love your music since Dire Straits. Your a legend my friend ❤❤❤
Mark this Romeo and Juliet is such an awesome song. You are so Awesome. You are the best of the best. Been a fan since I was 13 years old and I am still a Fan. Stay safe Mark a fan for ever
Was introduced to this song on a Walkman in 1979.
In a Factory in Terr Aar Holland.
Thanks George Brown from Glasgow.
I wish we had kept in touch.
Its like that you lose the people who move on and we forget they gave us something special.
It was a Great time in Holland in 1979-82
Hope you are good George and all you guys The Dirty Dozen

many times have I watched this video with my eyes closed... Just letting the music take me back to those golden moments of life - the beautiful ladies that built the embers & flames of my heart... One night or a hundred nights until the day I found my Juliet.. a thousand nights, ten thousand dreams, ten million thoughts that make this life and our love impossible to describe.
Beautiful song, brings such memories to my heart!!
why does this man melt me in every way
Maggie this song is for me the best ever written beautiful.
a beautiful song
Untouchable song by a songwriting god
Not only is Mark the greatest guitarist of all times he is a poet as well. When you listen to the words carefully you can learn and realize further meaningful lyrics. His reference to There’s a place for us , just like the movie song, is reference to West Side Story.
Almost all of his songs include reference to the past. Songs like Brothers in Arms, Sailing to Philadelphia, All the Road Running, If This is The End, and on and on have profound meaning. He is the greatest of my lifetime.
Is there a more profound and emotionally cutting love song ? I suspect not. A masterpiece.
The best part of live performances is the emotion they portray and in turn, elicit emotion from us. This is beautiful!
Werd
Alot of credit to the audience for being quiet on this version! Really sets the mood.
One of the most beautiful songs, brings good memories to my heart! ❤
Can't say anything... except your song has me in tears -- everytime, Mark!
loved this version
One of his best version . Beautiful.
A master of melody, lyrics and guitar. I've been fortunate to see him 6 times and he and the band are superb live.
This is hands-down, the best version of that gorgeous song.
As Mark plays it's clear that everyone in the room is thinking about past lovers, "and the way they used to be." What a great song, our shared experience.
Amen Amen ♥️♥️

So true wonderful thanks Mark
When you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong Romeo..
@@claireplant8113 I know ...
This song actually makes me cry endlessly like a baby.. I have so many memories that come up to my mind every time I listen to this song... Mom I love you. Forever and always. ❤️
What to say....simply is Mark Knopfler and all songs are beautiful from him alone or with Dire Straits!
Quel plaisir je ne me laisse pas. Merci Mark
It was just that the time was wrong. Sad...Mark is the best at putting it in a song. The song speaks from the heart
This version of Romeo and Juliet is so emotional. I've watched it since released and it's just as potent now as then. Around 3:10 is when I can't hold back any longer. At 3:28 when his lip quivers and all that emotion. ...oh man..... what a love song!!
The emotion is for all to see, the song is about an ex of MK's that didn't quite work out, clearly. Powerful song.
This is what real looks like
Just amazing that HE still lives these emotions all these decades later. Now THAT'S real art!
His expression at 5:08 "you and me baby, how about it"..
you've got perception if anything
One of the songs of all times !
Love this version.
An absolute masterpiece and he’s holding for me what is the most famous guitar ever.
The look on Mark’s face at 3:31 is heart crushing!
Not true, you have a goddess mane of hair darling. True story.
He always sings and plays with soul...not only with fingers.
But... those fingers are golden like his heart
One of the greatest guitarists on Earth ever.
Can't put into words how moving this song is too me, after all these years. It's just the best song ever written, your performance is truly magical. Thank you 🙏🏼💙
The sincerity of Mark when performing is what I believe makes this song so effective in capturing the right emotions
Its because he lived it. He wrote this song to a lover who used him to try to gain a name inthe music industry and the dumped him.. After all these years it still bothers him.
What a bitch ! I hope she regretted it in the end . 😘
Master piece
Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour are my 2 favourites 🎸🎸💯🏴
When I listen to this song, Mark I get a big lump in my throat. I have a Romeo, who lies tenderly in my heart.
I just can't find the exactly words to describe how much this beautiful song is. Mark's voice is... Heaven.
All you need is find the exact mood to enjoy this beautiful song! :-)
I agree it’s just amazing x
❤❤grandissimo MARK non sbaglia mai che suono meraviglioso can,one intramontabile❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Just noticed the red and blue curtains are same as Making Movies he played the same metallic guitar and wore same colors on the show Fridays one fantastic dude you are lucky to be watching
Yeah. Sometimes artists perform more than just the one song when they come on. Lucky us.
Loved this concert back in the day one of the times when the BBC delivered something decent
Just beautiful.
30+ yrs later..... best version listen to it over and over dreaming of simpler times.
How I'd love a night in London like that...love all the colors and his band is perfectly timed to each other...his words are so adorably sweet
As always outstanding performance
Stunning.
Congratulations to Dire Straits on their induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
Well, that was about time wasn't it?
Mr. Knopfler, thank you so much for your beautiful music ! You are the greatest musician ever!
One of the legends in the history of music. Few can make a guitar sound the way he makes it sing. His lyrics are about real life. I hope to see him perform again soon.
We will have the pleasure in june, on his upcomming 2019 tour. Romeo and Juliet is one of my favorites. Besides, i just love the sound of his "National" steelguitar. This lovesong is an evergreen.
Planning to go to see Him at the Greek Theatre this coming September 2019 in LA. TOP OF MY LIST INDEED
Sicuramente la migliore versione di sempre!!!!
OMG, still Love Him. He is so enchanting. Makes such Beautiful Music that is no Bull. Bawling as I listen to Him. Certainly is for real, honest & loving. Thanks Mark
This is such a beautiful song , what it was written about and played for I suppose is JUST PART OF THE WALK OF LIFE , so yes life and the walk with many bring you pain and some may just use you for what they need to till they are done in getting what they need , do not want to judge another or who caused who harm , it is just such an amazing and beautiful song till you find out what the lyrics are truly about . Your music is just awesome , you a humble person and you made it through all that pain and yes it was not the right time of Your Walk Of Life for that relationship as painful as it was , I salute you for your music and always writing and playing about something and not nothing , Great guitarist , great solo player and one of the best bands ever , Dire Straits
This is absolutely beautiful rendition 🤩
=perfection
This is truly one of the greatest songs of all time and I wish you could have got more credit when he was alive ultimate best I love him forever 😭💖💋💯
Voice, music and strokes from another world
I was enrolled in a Massachusetts college from 79 to 83 and fell in love and got my heart broken over and over again. After one of the more devastating separations I would play this song on my turntable over and over again lamenting on how much of an idiot I was to lose her. This song pulled me apart, but sometimes you need someone to be lonely with and a song fills the void. This one in particular brings me back to that off campus house and my roommates yelling in vain " will you shut that melancholy crap off for crying out loud, and snap out of it"
I've loved this song for so long.
Maybe, you are fixated. This is a common problem. I am extremely open to all music and this is what brings joy to my soul.
well, that was magical....
My absolute favourite song EVER!!!
I have loved this song from the first moment I heard it!!!❤️ Everytime I listen to it, it moves me... still to this day!
Thank you MK for perfection! 👌😊✨
But Juliet . . . Sigh. At least you left me with decent taste in jazz.
Same! When I was in university, it was always the song I signed off with on my campus radio show.
Jody White - agreed, my fave too
@Jody White I think its the National steel guitar that makes it special. If that had been done on an accoustic or god forbid an electric it just wouldnt hace been so wonderfully emotional.
By far my favorite song of all time as well....I like the version The Indigo Girls do too but the original by Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits is nothing short of a masterpiece!
Stunning ❤
I don’t believe the 258 thumbs down…What a beautiful song..Thanks Mark..I love the way you love what you do..God bless!
One of the best guitar artist in the last 60 years. I hear this music since 40 years... and I'm never tired of it.
Thats music for eternity!!!
Love Mark's dirty voice.
He was thirty and already'd got the hypnotic deep voice.
And his guitar'll be recognizable even in my very other dimension ❤.
Dire Straits for ever. Summer 1986 stadium peace and friendship!!! HELLAS 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷
