  • A task that could either cost you a lot, or save you a lot! Make sure you have the correct tools and correct parts and it should only take a few hours on the weekend.
    A fellow mechanic urged me to start including my donation accounts in my descriptions so other mechanics or DIYers can show some appreciation for these videos I've edited while working on my own vehicles. It's truly a money-saving experience for us to take our time out to do this, and I appreciate the love and support for videos like this:

    Man it is a good thing you know how to work on your own Beemer because those stealerships and shops go in HARD on your bank account when they see you roll up with a German car. Lol

      I don't even call BMW for shit. Nope. I know the play. They love to think that Americans can't work on foreign cars. These are not complicated. They're just tedious and got all these plastic covers all over the place with a gazillion snaps and screws. That's the irritating part: when you get to the end of the repair and realize all the shit you gotta put back together. LOL! Other than that, it's a process you just gotta take your time and walk thru.

      @@MicDropBBQ Yeah even cheap ass cars are becoming a pain to work on these days. But I do it because I refuse to pay $600 on something that I can only pay $150 to do myself. I am getting ready to replace my struts and end links in the next month and it will only cost me $250 whereas a shop would charge me $700-$900 for that shit.

      @BroadwayLTDProductions Yup! All money gone. Ain't no way I'm about to work hard to earn it, then pass it to someone at a high markup. Side mechanics are more fairly priced due to lower overheard. Shops? Man...asking for trouble.

      Oh, the engineers at BMW are wrong for that mount housing on the driver side. That was unnecessary to have it that high. The passenger side is angled perfectly and there's no housing around it like that. They built it up HIGH to prevent anyone from pulling it out without taking the damn subframe OFF. I wasn't taking off the rack and pinion to get it done. Nope. I wasn't loosing up nothing else. I just shaved a good inch off and didn't mess with my weld points. Easy access panel created! LOL!

      The passenger side was easier. If someone was on THAT side, I would've flown with the driver side. I was tired of getting up and down...one side to the other side...up and down...thru the hood, then under the engine...up and down. That takes all your time: getting up and down.
      And then with my back hurting, I was really going slow putting it back together!

    This was a really cool and informative video!! I actually just got done replacing my rear motor mount on my Altima a few days ago. I need to replace the hydraulic one on top because theres a lot of rattling going on in Park and Reverse. I love these videos though and I'm happy that your car is running a lot better!!!

    • @MicDropBBQ
      @MicDropBBQ  4 місяці тому +1

      Abdul, my brotha! Yeah. It drives SUPER quiet now! I forgot how quiet this thing was. Man, I've been hearing road noise for a while now. And it literally feels like the engine of off at stoplights now. No shaking at all. That driver side mount was so toast, it was spilling fluid. I dont know how long it was bad, but the schedule says 60k is when you replace them. I'm at 110k. OOOOPS! hahahaha! I'll swap these at 170k and I have it easier now that I did my little subframe cut.
      But yeah, I am loving it! LIterally like a luxury car and not a rumbling sports car. Never knew how bad it was until I pulled it all apart, brotha.
      As long as you can get that motor resting on a jack, you're good to go, brotha. Glad you're getting it all taken care of, too! Makes a difference in saving other parts from being damaged! Keeps everything in alignment!

      @@MicDropBBQ Yup exactly! So there's 3 mounts on my engine and I replaced the top one at 207k miles. I just did the rear at 232k miles and I need to do the hydraulic one now. I'm really pushing the envelope with these intervals because I haven't changed the mounts until now😅. It's still has all the power with a little rattle sometimes. It'll be ok for now though.

    • @MicDropBBQ
      @MicDropBBQ  4 місяці тому

      Oh yes. When the car shakes, they say it's struts or something else. They don't wanna swap the mounts out and just be done. Every 60k, most mounts can be switched out. That's once every 4yrs of normal driving. In my Escalade, I've got 224k and only swapped the transmission mount when I had it out. The motor mounts are probably done, but the truck runs smooth as hell. I just know it's about that time on that truck.
      I'm not even sure on the Jeep. 257k miles and it's got no issues. Scary. LOL! One day, it's just not gonna start, watch....LOL! Everything go out at once.

    I'm looking to do my driver side motor mount on my 2021 330i but I was wondering if there's a different alternative to cutting part of the subframe off. Anything else I can try? I don't have the tools for cutting metals lol

    • @MicDropBBQ
      @MicDropBBQ  Місяць тому +1

      If you can get that subframe to drop a little lower, that will keep you from cutting the subframe.I could have took more time to get the subframe to drop, but I wanted to get the job done so I took out a small notch.

      @@aruelasg All good, brotha. I know how it is when we're under a car looking for a less stressful solution, so I do my best to get to comments. If I'm gonna be a content creator, then I need to be comment responder. I hope you get the subframe as low as possible, because the engine can only go so high. Dont force it higher. Too much at stake. Raise it til it firmly stops and that's as high as it's going. Now work on getting that subframe to separate enough to slide it thru...and know you gotta put one back in, so dont force anything. It'll come out, and you'll have one going in even easier.

      Should do both sides at the same time! Always recommended

    • @aruelasg
      @aruelasg 21 день тому

      @@STAyTHIrstyMyFREind agreed but for my first time even working on a car let alone German engineering I think I did okay. See.. my g20 is fairly new (2021 with only 25k miles) so motor mounts should not be a problem at this mileage and yet something went wrong (the shop quoted me at $1400 for both sides btw 💀). Once I got my own tools and gained some confidence I went under the subframe and got a good look at the driver mount I noticed that it was a defective motor mount, the rubber was all there without any signs of wear or tear but it was collapsed, the black rubber part would just dip all the way in but you couldn’t wobble it from any direction as it was still stiff if that makes sense. Anyhow I checked the passenger side mount and it was in perfect shape still. My conclusion is that since I live in Arizona the temperature here can also have an effect on these parts and since the roads here are also shit with potholes everywhere I think that’s also a factor to keep in mind, oh and well I like to spin the bimmer a lot and that’s constantly putting strain on the motor mounts as the body of my car swings from left to right. It’s about to be 3 weeks since I did this job and everything is driving perfectly, I saved myself a band and now I’m happily waiting for my valvetronic axel back full exhaust system to come in as I want to install it myself and continue my car mechanic journey haha

    Just a couple of comments for anyone watching this: There are no SAE bolts (3/4", 15/16", etc) on a BMW, they are all metric. Sure, there will be overlaps (3/4" is very close to 19mm) but in general, it is best to use metric wrenches and sockets. Secondly... make sure you have your new engine mounts available before you take your car apart, haha.

    • @MicDropBBQ
      @MicDropBBQ  11 днів тому

      I just say which tools I use and it works just fine. Nothing ever strips and all bolts were ok. If you look in my automotive work playlists, you'll see I build parts, weld, build Jeep mods and fabricate on motorcycles. I don't just mess with tools; I make tools. Even made a special tool for pulling the springs and keepers out of an engine head because I needed a tool for it. As long as you can use the tool properly, that's my main goal of making these videos.
      Even tho I know my Suzuki, my BMW, and my Audi A6 all use metric, I use SAE when I see fit. Been doing it since I was a kid, as I rode/raced Honda for 15yrs and used SAE whenever I couldn't find the metric I wanted. Nothing ever stripped, and even when I build my parts, I don't always keep it metric. I use whatever works based on what I need done.

      And you're right about one thing that was VERY important that you said: make sure you get the right engine mounts! There are two versions of mounts for this car!! I totally forgot to answer that while I was typing, but 100% correct. Do not trust O'Reilly because they will sell you the wrong mount, telling you it's the right one. LOL! I tried to tell them it was not what was on my car and they kept saying, "...well, it's the one in the system for it." I told em, "...mine has a slide-thru bolt, not a top post that a bolt goes on."
      Make 100% sure you get the right mount! You're 100% right!
      I drive a lot, so I'll be going thru parts a lot faster than most B48s! LOL!
