That flat torque curve makes a car very predictable. Stomp the throttle anywhere in the powerband, you get the same response, you always know exactly what you're going to get. It's why cars like the E9x M3's were so easy to drive at the limit.
I was looking at that graph, and the first thing that came to mind was, "They have artificially limited the torque on this motor." I don't know if it is the engine internals, the gearbox, or something else, but this engine pretty clearly is limiting the torque output below what it is capable of so that it doesn't break something. This thing is approaching early WWII fighter engine levels of power.
When you see turbocharged torque graphs that look like a mesa, it means the manufacturer is limiting the engine in some way to produce that as it's unnatural...it means there's more left on the table with usually a simple ECU tune and usually a better fuel. They're probably limiting it due to them saying it'll run on 93 octane.... and knowing they're shoving 20lbs of boost at this V8, 93 is pretty shocking.... this thing, tuned on E85 is probably going to pick up 200hp and 200ft-lbs easy, just like the MB 4L Bi-turbo V8s do and the VAG 4L Bi-turbo V8s do

These crazy 4-digit horsepower numbers from so many cars nowadays is making them finally catch up to the superbikes in terms of power to weight ratio. 1000hp for a 4000lb car is equivalent to 150hp on a 425lb bike with a 175lb rider. Even my "medium-power middleweight" (lol) Street Triple has a power to weight ratio similar to a Challenger Hellcat with myself riding it. I doubt there will be much granularity to traction control which does render the power of the new ZR-1 with street tires useless as you say. This car would be insane if ..heavily modifying the chassis/body to significantly widen the tires for traction...and...finding somebody smart enough to hack the traction control to get the power to the ground that wider tires could sustain. How many would go to length? We will see.
Porsche can get its power down anywhere and is consistent because of the computers doing the work for traction and also good weight distribution so we will see what corvette will do for consistency
I don't think people realize that the Corvette will probably forever remain America's best ever sports car. Not even the Ford GT comes close to this monster. As someone who doesn't like modern American cars, this is car is what a real American car is all about. All the budget goes into the engine, don't worry about all the fine details. Feeling the FREEDOM. 🦅
I own a C8 and the fine details are pretty good. The car has no deficits, plenty of power, car handles excellent, brakes excellent, comfortable on long trips, two trunks, gets 30 plus mpg Hwy mid 20’s on the street. Interior very well laid out. And it looks exotic. And it’s 1/3 the price of a Euro car. And that’s just the base Stingray.
@@jamesengland7461 it doesn't pull that hard after 5th gear. If you watch The Straight Pipes or Car&Driver they both show the speedometer. Through 5th gear the car increases speed dramatically! Once it shifts into 6th gear it makes its way from 180ish up to 205/207 but at a MUCH Slower pace than before. 6th gear is tall and I'm assuming 7th & 8th are also. Its a supercar, IMO, but it will probably need a lot of asphalt or salt-flat in front of it to reach max speed in those upper gears.
The top gears are just for fuel economy. The other gears are too tightly spaced for street tires, but with track slicks and a lot more downforce their spacing might make sense...
What about this car is so good? It ain't road legal outside of America and the middle east. The car is still heavier than most sports cars, it got less downforce than a lot of the top level supercars. The only thing impressive is that they finally made 1000hp.

It took 8 generations, (71 years) but Corvette has finally made its first real SuperCar. To me they always nudged the edge of a Sports Car and SuperCar, but for the C8 ZR1, it's undeniably a SuperCar. When the C8 was first shown off back in 2020, I fell in love with the platform and design immediately. I have been chomping at the bit for the ZR1 to come out, and now it has. This thing is truly amazing for a US manufacturer to create. Thank full it doesn't look like a typical US manufactured SuperCar. It's not "big" for "big" sakes. It's not "over powered" for "over powered" sakes. Everything looks and sounds like it has a purpose. The design language looks right. It's uniform, no random drop offs. Amazing angles, and aggressive lines. Great job Corvette for joining the SuperCar world.
lol just because something is mid engine doesn’t mean it’s a supercar. And just because something is front engine doesn’t mean it’s not. If this gen is a super car then so was last gen.

1,000hp is not that hard to do. It’s more about how long the engine can handle that stress, how it handles the heat, and how long it’ll last at that level.
Exactly, and this being an OEM warrantied, road legal vehicle with emissions and other gubbins that it has to adhere to makes it quite a spectacular achievement.
@@ALMX5DPThats why it will not be sold in europe. The engine stats are a receipe for disaster. It is not capable of long full throttle Autobahn runs. Compression is too high …

I launch my 1380cc zx12 in second gear and you can watch me outrun an h2 that was running e85 a slick and aggressive supercharger gears on my insta. Also running 2.50 drive gears in my procharged big block 57 Corvette street car for similar purposes. Cnc heads solid roller cam 565ci with 25 lbs of boost at 7500rpm in a 2600 lb kit car. It makes 1800ish horsepower with nothing done to it that I didnt do at home. You do not need short gears if you have enough torque.
True, but the Z06 and ZR1 have never, every been about putting down power comfortably. Get a Porsche or GTR for that lol. These Vettes are about being ridiculous.
@@RedfishCarolina in previous generations I would agree but the the reason behind going to the mid engined platform was to be more serious to compete and beat the Europeans. Another great video of facts, markers and white boards. This car is going to be nuts, it's kind of getting into the silly category. I remember as a kid, I saw a magazine with info on the new C5Z06 and I remember a quote from it saying it's 405HP "took this car from sports car territory to super car territory". And I remember thinking how crazy that much power must be, and now we are well over double that. I fear this thing will be pretty difficult to keep between the liens though, we'll see a few wrecked ones.
Torque absolutely matters Jason! Take my truck for example, it only produces 550hp @ ~2000rpm, however, it also produces 1850lb/ft of torque (Cummins 15L ISX engine). Without that huge torque output, it would be suited to being a boat mooring. Here in Australia there are heavy spec trucks using this, and similar, engine hauling combinations grossing over 200 metric tons.
Incredible machine. The range on my C8 Z06 is only 225 miles or so. I can’t imagine how often I’d be stopping for fuel with this (although I’d be happy to do it)!
I'm still driving my 550kgs classic mini with a small 1330cc tuned to 90bhp and it feels nippy enough for me... Also have a E30 with the M10 engine tuned to 140bhp in 950kgs and a smart roadster with 120bhp for 800kgs, and they feel "fast enough". Can't believe where we are going, I'm not much on the power hype train but it's very cool for those who are :)

"Let's talk about our feelings, now for some whiteboard therapy" damn that line rocked.
That's definitely GM firing a shot across the bow of every car manufacturer. Corvette handling with insane horsepower!
Until one runs 6.2s @ nearly 230mph on radials and wins overall Sick Week, Ford isn't concerned one bit. The Coyote has already done that.
OR run 300.4 mph in a standing mile with the oe cast engine.
Ford's 5.4L 4V has held that world record since March 2019.
Or run 7.7s factory sealed. Also a Coyote milestone.
On a related note: It would be cool for you to make content about motorcycles, as the engineering going into them is super cool!
FortNine is your equivalent for bikes, for quality of content and analysis.
Yeah, maybe stock, but bikes have never been quicker than the quickest vehicles with 4 tires at the strip. Ever
The C8 ZR1 did 233.5mph top speed with a passenger while analyzing data on a laptop. Can’t do that on a bike.😂
I can't wait for the inevitable "wrecked it driving it out of the dealership" video.
I remember reading when the 707 hp hellcat came out and one guy stuffed a lime green one on the first drive. His excuse was "I lost control because the road was damp" sure Bud. 😅
Customers of special high-performance Corvette models get a free driving school at Spring Mountain. Hopefully they get enough training to know how to handle 1000 hp. Most people shouldn't have more than 150 hp.
Cars and coffee should get exciting
Anyone remember rowin Atkinson and his McLaren F1?

The Sledgehammer vette in 1988 went 254 MPH at
top end. Held that record for over two decades!
And it only did with the venerable SBC 350 twin

It would take much longer to hit 233 than the new ZR1.
Yes but you couldn’t daily drive that car, and it didn’t run on pump fuel and I guarantee it didn’t brake or handle like a C8.

Excellent Video! Keep up the great work Jason.
Only the keen eyed of us notice when he changed the Z06 hp from 760 back to 670!! GREAT VIDEO!!
Traction control calibration, make a video on that. Without it, it’s power will be useless.
I doubt there will be much granularity to traction control which does render the power of the new ZR-1 with street tires useless as you say. This car would be insane if
..heavily modifying the chassis/body to significantly widen the tires for traction...and...finding somebody smart enough to hack the traction control to get the power to the ground that wider tires could sustain. How many would go to length? We will see.
Yep, and torque converter strategy. Much like if a diesel won't give you all the TQ available in a low gear due to the tranny/TQ converter strategy.
Boost by gear/speed would go very far for solving this issue.
Porsche can get its power down anywhere and is consistent because of the computers doing the work for traction and also good weight distribution so we will see what corvette will do for consistency
It's torque limited in first 2 gears
I don't think people realize that the Corvette will probably forever remain America's best ever sports car. Not even the Ford GT comes close to this monster. GM have taken the Corvette to the stratosphere and absolutely destroyed all competition. Heck this car is even better than the Ford Mustang GTD. Ford ain't close and Mopar did the biggest mistake of canceling on the Challenger and V6-ing the Charge and not bringing back the Viper. Thank you GM, now bring back the Camaro and let us continue to enjoy the front-engine pony car with two back seats!!
The ford made the world look hard at American cars, it changed global perspectives and basis. Pretty hard to beat
Are we emtering into an era of large capacity, high revving turbo engines? First this, and then the Hurracan's relapcement with it's 10k red line 😊😊
We are entering an era of mandated 100% electric vehicles unfortunately but I hope you’re right
We’re entering an era of mandated scam cars called EVs.
Manufacturers realized EVs are a scam and came back to the old reliable displacement!
Let's not forget the Koenigsegg Jesko and Gemera, more power from a 5 liter V8 on same fuel.

I was waiting for your video as soon as I saw the numbers of the ZR1! I think you have some of the best content on UA-cam!
Do the clarkson test, put it in 4th gear and drive it too its top speed in one gear👀
Never thought I'd see a car engine with the same horsepower as an early WWII aircraft engine.
As someone who doesn't like modern American cars, this is car is what a real American car is all about. All the budget goes into the engine, don't worry about all the fine details. Feeling the FREEDOM. 🦅
The details protects you from the engine. It’s like worrying only on a rocket getting you to space but not back to earth
Which is why i hate old cars. Death boxes (cause they lacked safety & were all squares, no curves)
@@ckchatta369 I love the old Cadillac and Lincolns that were 20 feet long and had the comfiest seats and suspension
Thank you for your help in this video. I will definitely be chatting with my therapist soon about torque.
What I'm hearing at 14:52 is "does the ZR-1 need 6 gears, really?"
Good question.
And it has 8! But imagine how hard it will pull in those upper gears. WOW!
Jason this was fantastic. Your enthusiasim is contagious.
Yet another example of Gm Having thee best Engineers in the business
...now we just hope marketing doesn't doom it ala Corvair, Fiero, Volt.
Brilliant engineering, but mixed messaging.
What about this car is so good? It ain't road legal outside of America and the middle east. The car is still heavier than most sports cars, it got less downforce than a lot of the top level supercars. The only thing impressive is that they finally made 1000hp.
Next we'll need a version with the e-ray front wheel motors. 💪
Making 1000hp from the factory on pump gas and no hybrid assistance is seriously crazy
The crazy part is the warranty work
Great work, great videos... very thankful to have found your channel!!
The OEM engineers dont worry about carbon buildup on intake valves b/c it only becomes an issue outside of the design life.
Learned so much from your channel, pure knowledge in raw form with exceptional explanation making it easy for someone who knows nothing to learn something. I’ve known cars for years. But understanding all these fundamentals takes you to the next level. Thank you
No frunk, I'm out 😆. That cracked me up because no one buying one of these is going to care 😆
As soon as this car dropped, I was waiting for this video. As usual, I am more than satisfied. Thank you.
Happy to hear it, thanks for watching!
I would consider the C7 ZR1, and possibly the C7 ZO6’s Supercars. IMO.
@@joelpierce3940 That's ok. It's all a matter of opinion technically.
lol just because something is mid engine doesn’t mean it’s a supercar. And just because something is front engine doesn’t mean it’s not. If this gen is a super car then so was last gen.

After hearing these details... Goosebumps.. These kind of data can't be seen anywhere else with such simple explanation. Would love to have one 😍😍😍❤️❤️
@@haviiithelegogunner907 what is your source for that statement?

Don't forget, with the bolt pattern going to 5x130, you could fit basically any VW Group wheel onto this. Alternatively, the 2001-2024 Renault Master van's wheels also fit (at least the bolt pattern does anyway)
Its nice that you explain the area under the power curve throughout the different gear ratios. I started launching my 450 mx bike in third gear completely pinned, and I can eat just about anything. Youll be grabbing fourth as quickly as they grab second and i promise you itll make a massive difference in your results.

Been with ya since the beginning bro, bloody love the energy on this one. Fkn gititt!
Incredible machine. The range on my C8 Z06 is only 225 miles or so. I can’t imagine how often I’d be stopping for fuel with this (although I’d be happy to do it)!
