  • Good old Custard is at it again, giving me some stick as usual. Despite all the annoyances and little quirks, I can't help but like this bike.
This is the next part to the saga. Rectifier, stator or something else all together? let's find out.

yes, the green wire is basically an on/off switch but is quite important because the bike was using the battery to run everything, including the coils and CDI, spark.

Hi Chris, I've had problems like yours on a couple of bikes where the stator readings are fine but reg/rec output is not. The problem has always been the connector between them. Basically, the connectors break down which causes resistance which leads to overheated, damaged wiring. Cut the wires back to get rid of the damage and then solder the wires together instead of using a connector will stop this problem repeating. These annoying block connector issues are a common fault. Unfortunately the damage to the wiring can then cause damage to the reg/rec but usually not. Solder the wires, run your voltage tests again and you should be ok.

Nice input Ian thanks. The wiring etc looks OK, other than the green one being wired wrong. I've definitely got somewhere to go now however with your comments and those of others on here. It's great. What a community :)

If you are going to upgrade the reg / rec I recommend getting a CMOS one because it is a good upgrade to do anyway. I had to get out of the bath twice during that video because I thought the dog was barking at something, but it was just a dog in the background!!!

Electrics are a mystery to me so I’m no help to you, but while you are correcting problems you also need to do the maintenance bits, i.e, when you cleaned up the earth connecting point you should have put something on the all the parts to keep corrosion at bay in future - Vaseline will do. It saves similar problems down the line. Also try to avoid ‘just slapping on yet another new part till the problem goes away’ - that gets expensive very quickly and you never learn what the problem really was. Hope Custard is soon up and running and being a ‘good boy’. Les

That's a great point about the vasaline. It's definitely worth doing 👌
Since filming the video, I have had lots of chats with folks on the groups who have been everso helpful. I have a couple of things to try before buying a new one. I'm going to rewire the rec as it should be in the wiring diagram and see what happens.
I really do hope he starts behaving. I love this bike and really want to keep it for a long time.
Thanks for your input. It's really appreciated.

@@anidiotonboard6539 It’s worth having a pot of Vaseline in the workshop/shed, as every time I pull apart a bullet-connector or clean off a connection point (like your earth point) it gets a little dose to keep the air and water away from the electrics. Not just useful for soft hands! Les

@leslieaustin151 think good old Custard needs dipping in it to be honest 😄

James Mcreadie. The wiring on my bike, the was parked up for years and recued it. Ivd fitted a new rectifier, can i see where the green wire goes, nope!. The snap in plugs were missing. Any idea where i put the green?. Bike starts ans runs fine. I believe it goes to the igintion but, how. Cheers!,

If you get on the Funduro F650 group on Facebook, there is a workshop manual on there that has the wiring diagrams in there. Hopefully that can help you. :)

Yours looks like the wrong reg/rec. I'm still investigating it but believe and am happy to be corrected that the green wire is a sense wire and tells the reg/rec to let charge out to all the circuits including the battery and yours is wired to the ground and not the ignition. You'll notice a broken terminal next to the red/white from the reg, that's where the green wire should go up to the ignition.
Was there a red/white to the battery from the loom, I didn't notice one but to be honest couldn't see properly. Anyway a new reg/rec should sort it because it'll plug in correctly.

I think you are correct. I have done more research on the forums etc since doing this video and that is the conclusion I have come to. I will be tracing all the wiring and wiring it up as per the wiring diagram from BMW to see what happens. There is a wite spliced directly into the positive from the battery but I am not entirely sure what that is. Its another one I need to trace and track where it goes. I'm pretty sure it's not the original reg, but that doesn't supprise me.
Cheers for your input. Gives me somewhere to go. 👍

It should be a red/white from the loom and it should have a clear pink sheath over it. That’s the charging wire from the reg rec. you may need to slice the loom open to see what’s going on. It’s amazing that all these important wires are all spliced together 4 and 5 at a time. Have always found that odd but bmw thinks that’s fine and other manufacturers do to do whom am I to question them. A side point but also a failure point. I’m saying that because that’s the case with both the red/white and green from the reg/rec and when I inspected mine when I first got the bike, the green was loose at the junction inside the loom.

@JamesMcCreadie71 the wire definitely has a death over it and it was abit pinky. That's probably what your on about. I'll have a good look over the weekend. Really good info here. It's much aprexiated.

@@anidiotonboard6539 that'll be the charging wire then so that's right. You're welcome. Hope you get it sorted.
