This is a great video. I live in Chicago, and I am so sick of the deep dish idiocy. I only eat deep dish pizza when some random person is visiting. Otherwise. I eat the thin crust, square-cut pizza shown in this video (I live on the South Side). It is refreshing to see a video on the pizza that Chicago residents actually eat.
You know, people eat both kinds in Chicago, thin and thick. Giordano's is Illinois's largest pizza chain(thick crust) and Home Run Inn is Illinois's largest frozen pizza company (thin, but not NY style)
Nope. I've had pizza throughout Italy. It's like southwestern pizza on extra sodium because of the culture of salted meat. Plus, most places seem to have never heard of pepperoni! Best pizza in the states is in Buffalo NY. It's in between Chicago and NYC so you get a medium crust. Go figure! Those folks know how to make a great pizza to compliment their wings. If anyone's in that area I recommend Picasso's for pizza and La Novas for their wings (and pizza). Pudgies is another in that area that has the right ingredients too, their sheet pizza is best. A bit on the saucy side though.
As a New Yorker who's never been to Chicago, I'm partial to our pizza, and the deep dish we're served here doesn't cut it - as far as I know, ours is the best. That said, I'm intrigued and interested in checking out the real deep dish and the thin crust in Chicago. There's a lot of love in what they do in Chicago, and I'd love to sample it... and I've heard good things about Detroit too. I'll have to sample the midwest's best at some point, because it looks a lot different than Italian and NY pizza... and it's nice to see variety and creativity.
Just like the "New York style" pizza places that opened in Chicago didn't quite cut it. Or the Philly cheesesteaks all over the country that are not the same as in Philly. For some reason, when people take something from one city to another city, it's just never the same so you don't get the full experience.
Wow that was a real tear jerker was just listening to Burt Katz talking about life and perspective, and baaam at the end you realize he passed away already
Each city/region/state of the USA has always the same history that they present as something "cool": You know, our city LA/NYC/Houston/Chicago/Miami, is basically a melting pot...
I've lived in Chicago most of my life, nobody from here that I associate with orders deep dish. Deep dish is what you get when friends from out of town visit.
Then you must live in an area that doesn't have great deep dish. I'm born and raised here my entire life and I eat deep dish often. YES - thin crust cut in squares is our main pizza and is what we get the most. On that we agree. But if I had to have one last pizza - it's going to be a Lou Malnati's deep dish with buttercrust.

Wow that was a real tear jerker was just listening to Burt Katz talking about life and perspective, and baaam at the end you realize he passed away already
Just ranked 76 pizzerias over a summer... aka alcoholic pizza binge
alcohol and pizza go hand in hand
Anyone else got hungry after watching this.
dread knot i got hungry while watching it hahaha 😂

dread knot I'm watching it because I'm hungry and all I have right now are some chips and cookies cuz I'm on vacation and it's night lol
@D4RKplayz I lost my appetite
"Chicago was a city where everyone came from somewhere else"
Well, that's actually the case of your whole countru my G.
Yeah but cities like that are where people from other states come
Well if ya go far enough back everyone is from somewhere else, unless you’re in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Each city/region/state of the USA has always the same history that they present as something "cool": You know, our city LA/NYC/Houston/Chicago/Miami, is basically a melting pot...
@@Bergen98 Yeah it's pretty awesome
This show is amazing and Frank is such a cool guy.
Your loss.
Frank is such a charismatic person, effortlessly commanding respect allowing him to connect with his guests on a personal level. He truly understands the right way to treat people. Well done.
FRANK IS SUCH A GOOD FUCKING HOST GODDAMN. best show on the channel rn
i cried when i knew in the end that Burt died! in just those few seconds of listening and watching him i felt his warming simplicity and honesty in my heart..rip
am SO happy that he was in this interview
I wish there new episodes I’ve seen the series so many times I really hope I get to meet him someday he doesn’t just show us food he shows us the culture, history and most importantly the family behind a food that so simple in Ingredients but yet so complex in its impact one not only the people but the community awesome series 🙌🏽
Why did you do that munchies, I still wish for more of frank. It's just sad you know.
Frank is the man , no doubt.
What happened to Frank??
@@johnnyrico707 Hasn’t gotten a new show with Munchies, but granted it’d be pretty hard to make another series with him. He knows his shit with pizza but he’d be out of his league with tacos.
This dude is one of the coolest on youtube
Rose seems like the most loving peaceful soul, a true labor of love
Omfg the second location is two miles from my house and down the street from my fathers store holy shit
NICE
thomas herrera GO

2:51 "This pizza couldn't have been invented in california" TRUE
nothing is invented in california
@@nadrud Except few things you probably use daily like blue jeans, everything Apple related, wd 40, and things may not use too often like lasers, vhs recorder, wetsuits, squeegees, popsicles, skateboards, and more important inventions like automatic gear shift, landing system for aircraft, radar system for locating planes, etc. You realize Silicon Valley is located in California, right?
@brokenupbeat fuck california

Awesome comment. So true.
Freddy's pizza is great and the other food there is even better. Joe is around all the time and is as friendly and down to earth as he is the video.
So true. I've lived in the neighborhood all my life and I seldomly get the pizza. The gnocchi there is my go to.
I live half a mile from Freddys but never been. Gotta try it sometime!
i love franks energy.... he also seems to look at pizza objectively and appreciates it for what it is.... much love frankie
"you have to have an apron on"
Proceeds to make a pizza without an apron on
Vito and Nicks, and Freddie’s... Two of my favorite pizza places in Chicago.
I grew up in Hometown down the street from Vito & Nicks! Still my top 3 growing up. I am now in Jersey and miss my Chicago roots. Jersey has some good places but nothing beats the memories from growing up.
LA next i hope and a visit to Pizzanista.
RIP to Burt Katz who died May 1st 2016.
That is pretty good LA pizza man haha, haven't gone in a while, might go soon now lol
We have a pizzanista in Long Beach, Ca, and, it's ok. The sauce is lacking flavor in my opinion. I've heard the LA location is better. The staff is awesome, the location is terrific, but, lacking in flavor. I continue to go back once in awhile just to make sure it's not me. I love pizza.
If you're on the west side, try Lamonicas Pizza
XTheSonofTheSunX bro I fucking got you haha, I'll check it soon. You ever been to Eggslut? Lmao
Christian Esqueda ni, i havent, but, I'm up in venice often, i may take my wife there, thanx for the lead.
cheers
Christian Esqueda
That's the first thing i'll eat when i go to LA.
Frank is a great host. You gotta love the people of Chicago and surrounding neighborhoods. Some of the friendliest characters you’ll ever meet!
I've never had deep dish pizza but it looks way better than New York style.
I prefer it. Deep Dish is more of a full meal. New York style pizza is made to be eaten on the go like a snack.
Apples and oranges and both so damn good
NY style is too thin and chicago style is just a pie. Both taste great and they fit for different needs, but the best pizza is something that is in between those two extremes
Well, there's two kinds of pizza styles in Chicago. (1) The deep dish and (2) thin crust cut party style.
WTF? Never? You haven't lived then. Get out of your bubble and go find a deep dish tomorrow.
Fantastic host
i mean... he gotta talk about pizzas, not about climate change.
I love this show, it goes beyond pizza and in to the lives of the people past and present who have brought so much happiness to others through the power of food
as a central illinois resident that has always wanted to do a pizza tour of chicago, i am thankful for this video so i know of the spots that i really need to hit. Vito & Nick's is a must for me. love the thin crust. like you said, perfect for snacking while drinking beers
Chicago pizza cut party style. That's where my heart is.
No. New York style cut in triangle.

I like doritos as well. Maybe a pizza with dorito toppings.
Sean Conrad
What the fuck does that have to with my post? Nothing. Stay on topic, bitch, and don't make it something that it isn't.

This is America. Might as well go full 'Murica while you're at it. #YOLO I think it's reasonable enough given what passes today to fulfill the "pursuit of happiness."

I agree, but say a homemade pizza - just for yourself or some friends. When it comes to buying it I do think doritos as a topping would be too "out there." Speaking of Hawaiian, I tend to order pineapple on my Chicago thin crust when I order.
5 years later and this is still one of the best Pizza show episodes I've ever watched.
I agree
the worst thing is that im eating an apple while waching this.
Hamed Alothmani i'm drinking soy milk🤣
Apple's good 4 u.
Aaah no . I'm fasting and watching this. Its like torture
That thumbnail had me thinking Binging with Babish was in this vid
Same here! Great call.
Frank and Babish definitely have one thing in common, naturally apart from their passion for food. They're both incredible human beings that noone in the right mind could hate
Frank is a brilliant host. respectful, passionate and always up for anything
Love this! There's always something deeper behind a great tasting dish than recipes. It's the soul, devotion and passion that is the secret ingredient that no one can replicate. Cheers!
Great show , the host is doin a good job. Eating pizza is a pleasure
Chicago deep dish... what a lovely casserole.
I read this as "Deep Dish on Thin Crust" I was like whoa! someone finally did it
Love watching these. It’s all about family.
