As a person who makes corsets!!! Here's some tips :) Using bias tape for channels will save you so, so much time. Plus hand sewing will add stability and look beautiful If you really wanna add that flare, look at historical corsets and see what boning channel patterns you like most. These types are based on tutor overbust corsets, and Stays, which range in time periods. If you want it to look like a modern bra, stays corsets can also have outer cups like a bra! It's not too much extra work, and looks fantastic under and over garments. If wearing as a top, because of the boning/zip ties or whatever you use, you should have a lining to protect the outer fabric and boning. Personally, I'd recommend sewing the boning channels Inside, between the two layers of fabric. The stitch will make it viable, it will feel just a bit better on, and it will look extremely clean and neat. If you're extra extra fancy, you can make the straps adjustable by sperating them in the middle, at the top of your shoulders, do a button hole stitch, and weave ribben between them. For the back, you definitely want that extra supportive fabric. If you want the corset to be tight at all, you'll need the support from the layers. Won't leave out that step!!! This video is super good, and I love everything about it! I was certainly so, so much worse when I made my first corset (especially as it was supposed to be the real, clinching thing, and yet it was 3x bigger than I wanted, and somehow puckered everywhere.) this just reminds me of why I love your channel.
Love the result!! 💞💝💖 The boning and channels are usually sewn on the wrong side of the fabric, in between the lining and the self, and the top stitching is whats visible from the front! The boning is apparent on the Vivienne Westwood bustier ones because the fabric is sheer + the top stitching!! Hope this was helpful !!
Corsets are much more comfortable than people believe and people to wear them every day for any type of chores (yes, even men). I doubt working women would have bothered with corsets if they couldn't breathe while wearing them, but they harvested wheat in them and didn't faint. Corsets don't make you faint! Unless they're being worn incorrectly! But great video, as always. It makes all the difference when you show the challenges you faced along the way.
Fun Fact: if you're fainting from an actual corset, you know the ones from back then, that means it is not made properly or not being used properly. If you can't breath in an actual corset it's either not your size, tight laced, not designed properly, or maybe not well seasoned. The idea that the corset is a symbol of oppression by patriarchy was actually created by the patriarchy. Since women dominated the fashion industry back then, men decided to mock and make false claims about fashion. Corsets are actually very beneficial in that they help with posture, give support, and helped distribute the weight of dresses women wore back then. People who have back problems even use the corset to help them.

I wish I had a sewing machine at home, I’d really like to learn how to make my own clothes. Right now I’m just stuck with mountains of yarn and a stash of knitting needles from my late grandma, so I’ve been knitting the quarantine away! Already finished a sweater and mittens for my nephew (due date in August!), next up I’m gonna make a sweater for myself and some socks for my BIL. Oh and last year I bought a weaving kit because I was inspired by your vids and last week I finallt finished my first wall hanging! It came out super pretty. I film some period tv shows sometimes and have to wear a historical corset and honestly it’s not bad at all! Doesn’t make you faint or give you stomach cramps like you’d think, and actually it gives you great posture to stop me from slouching around on set!

There is no proof that historical corsets made people faint. Contrary to popular belief, corsets were made to fit a girls body not push all her organs in. They were about as uncomfortable as a bra and only really held a person in. They did not contort their body like modern day corsets do or people assume they did. The reason their waists looked so tiny is because the bottom of the corset flared out past the hip in order to hold up their skirts; which in turn made their waist look super tiny and delicate. The average females waist was 26 inches (with a corset), which is a standard small. Taking into consideration that they did not have food so readily available like modern day women whos average waist size is 38 inches (without a corset).
Modern day corset are not horrible either if worn properly and you have the right size. It is harder to get the proper size corset now tho since most people have to order online. But I wear corset, I wear them around in sunny san diego walking constantly in my university though out the day. People often think that you have to tighten corset so tight that they hurt or hard to breath but thats not how it works you move slowly down in waist but its not required.
if you mean "modern day corsets" like ones from Orchard Corset or Timeless Trends, yes they technically do contort the body, since they're tightest around the squishiest part of the waist, but since that part is already squishy (ie it's not squeezing the ribs or hips, just the space in between) it doesn't hurt or anything like the word "contort" might imply. I have a 26-27" waist which can very easily be squished down to about 23" even if i only wear a corset very occasionally for costume purposes. but if you mean those stretchy "waist trainer" things then no those aren't even corsets to begin with

I'm so sorry for perpetuating the misconception, I was trying to clarify that mine would be more of a tank top than a proper laceup BUT I admit I had that one scene from Pirates of the Caribbean in mind when I mentioned fainting which goes to show the influence media has 😖
@Wendy: That looks more like a bodice than a corset. The bodice sort of rounds out the bustline area and is less focused on smoothing the waistline or creating an hourglass-type silhouette. 😊

I’ve been making my own clothes for over a decade. I see very much like you, don’t use patterns just bite the bullet and got for it. During quarantine I started quilting and absolutely love it. So maybe give it a try!
I think if you add just one layer of fusing you will enhance the quality and structure up a notch, your corset looks so beautiful, also fuse the ends of the zip ties so they can be soft, thank you so much this really helped alot
This came out much better than I was expecting. I think if you made it from woven material it would have worked better since you installed a zipper anyway. I kind of hated it in the inspiration pic but yours looks very cute on you. It's reminiscent of a stomacher from the old days. "A stomacher is a decorated triangular panel that fills in the front opening of a woman's gown or bodice. The stomacher may be boned, as part of a corset, or may cover the triangular front of a corset." in case you are wondering what that is. Good job!
Wendy this looks beautiful I’m defo trying this myself. Don’t be discouraged about peoples comment on historical corsets and whether it a bodice or corset no body asked so shut up . It's more of a pair of stays rather than a corset. Corsets did not have straps and they were more fitted and flared. Stays had straps and were like a "sports bra". Corsets actually did not make people faint. Tightlacing, which was a reduction of the waist with a corset, was not a common practice. Also, corsets and stays are more comfortable than the modern day bra, because they provide support not only by a measly little stap but by supporting the whole back and chest area.
If your bras are only supporting you by the straps you need a smaller band and likely also a bigger cupsize, most of the support comes from the band, not the straps... bras aren't uncomfortable, most people just wear the wrong size
Loved the corset top. I did not even notice dart being next to, instead of under, the boning channel until it was mentioned. A ragged seam would detract from the garment's appearance, but a well made dart adds to the garment's unique style.
I don't typically comment on videos but I've been thinking about this forever. YOu are AMAZING and have been an inspiration to me for SO long and in so soso many ways. Your attitude, generosity, openness, class, and style are just so impressive. I started sewing with my adoptive mom, and tried my best to keep going when she died but I became a heavy alcoholic and drug user. To make the linear pattern of the fabric match and line up through each piece of the bodice you could separate each piece (talking about the basic bodice you did first) and place them on top of the fabric, going with the grain of said fabric so that all the lines are going in the same direction. But I think the vertical lines give it a nice effect anyway.

This has been me for the past few weeks. I've been working on a denim bustier/corset -ish top and it's been rough haha. But a real learning progress too. I love to see you figuring things out along the way because that has been my approach too. Even though it can be very demotivating that way because you keep seamripping and sewing things back a million times over and over, it still somehow is all worth it at the end :) You've been my inspiration and always motivate and inspire me to start new projects :) thank you for that

I’ve been making my own clothes for over a decade. I see very much like you, don’t use patterns just bite the bullet and got for it. During quarantine I started quilting and absolutely love it. So maybe give it a try!

I think if you add just one layer of fusing you will enhance the quality and structure up a notch, your corset looks so beautiful, also fuse the ends of the zip ties so they can be soft, thank you so much this really helped alot

This came out much better than I was expecting. I think if you made it from woven material it would have worked better since you installed a zipper anyway. I kind of hated it in the inspiration pic but yours looks very cute on you. It's reminiscent of a stomacher from the old days. "A stomacher is a decorated triangular panel that fills in the front opening of a woman's gown or bodice. The stomacher may be boned, as part of a corset, or may cover the triangular front of a corset." in case you are wondering what that is. Good job!
Wendy this looks beautiful I’m defo trying this myself. Don’t be discouraged about peoples comment on historical corsets and whether it a bodice or corset no body asked so shut up . It's cool that you describe all of your "flubs", but in the end the final outcome looks nice. Nice, encouraging video.
It's more of a pair of stays rather than a corset. Corsets did not have straps and they were more fitted and flared. Stays had straps and were like a "sports bra".
Corsets actually did not make people faint. Tightlacing, which was a reduction of the waist with a corset, was not a common practice. Also, corsets and stays are more comfortable than the modern day bra, because they provide support not only by a measly little stap but by supporting the whole back and chest area.
I would say that it is more of a bustier.
If your bras are only supporting you by the straps you need a smaller band and likely also a bigger cupsize, most of the support comes from the band, not the straps... bras aren't uncomfortable, most people just wear the wrong size
Loved the corset top. I did not even notice dart being next to, instead of under, the boning channel until it was mentioned. A ragged seam would detract from the garment's appearance, but a well made dart adds to the garment's unique style.
I don't typically comment on videos but I've been thinking about this forever. YOu are AMAZING and have been an inspiration to me for SO long and in so soso many ways. Your attitude, generosity, openness, class, and style are just so impressive. I started sewing with my adoptive mom, and tried my best to keep going when she died but I became a heavy alcoholic and drug user. Today I am clean and sober and SO glad I have your clear, and concise videos to go through and relearn. Congrats on a mil. you deserve is SOSOSO much. Hi Wendy! I love corset tops but I think God didn't gave me enought talent to make them… It looks so difficult but you made it so perfectly! I think you really have "fairy hands"... Such an amazing job! ;)
To make the linear pattern of the fabric match and line up through each piece of the bodice you could separate each piece (talking about the basic bodice you did first) and place them on top of the fabric, going with the grain of said fabric so that all the lines are going in the same direction. But I think the vertical lines give it a nice effect anyway.

This has been me for the past few weeks. I've been working on a denim bustier/corset -ish top and it's been rough haha. But a real learning progress too. I love to see you figuring things out along the way because that has been my approach too. Even though it can be very demotivating that way because you keep seamripping and sewing things back a million times over and over, it still somehow is all worth it at the end :) You've been my inspiration and always motivate and inspire me to start new projects :) thank you for that
