Most people think you can wing it but because baking relies on chemistry for a lot of the texture and taste, you have to do it in the right order and the right amount.
Well, I am pretty good at following instructions, just have never seen a good, precise and all-covering baking or cooking instruction. I suck at cooking.
Oh I NEVER do the hard parts first. I do the fun parts first, and then I agonize over having to do the boring parts and end up procrastinating until I have almost no time left on my proposed deadline, of course. This turned out so cute!
The fun parts first are a good idea if you use them as a way to get started: you need less activation energy to start with the easy task. Once you're at it, just continue.
I'm an author and omg do I feel this. So many of my projects start with me knocking out all the fun scenes in just a couple of days and then agonising over the buildup for weeks, if not months. Thankfully with sewing I can at least convince myself to do things in a logical order
your pre-sewing organization is SO satisfying to me, i always sew in a sort of ADHD rage and it involves ALL GO NO THINK which only works out about half of the time lol
Birgitta Helmersson's "Zero Waste Patterns" book has one for a singlet/spaghetti strap tank top made from remnants. But if you can make a patchwork rectangle from your scraps, you could use any of her zero waste patterns to make a garment!
Would have like to see more finished dress, how it moves? What the back looks like and also how Marla's version turned out. The color scheme and fabrics were so pretty.
I 100% acknowledge that my preference of cooking over baking is because I do not like following directions!! One thing I struggle with a lot is the spatial and dimensional aspects of sewing instructions. I think I have some level of dyscalculia. Which is why video instructions are really helpful, but I still struggle a lot with making patterns and their directions make sense.
Ah so fun! I love the short length! Also- totally agree about sewing with a pattern! I don’t know how to self draft clothing at this point, so when friends see what I make with a pattern, they’re like “oh you’re so talented!” And I tell them that, no, I’m just good at following directions. 🙃 Haha What a fun way to use up your stash!
Brochures will still exist for a while, just not as prominently as the 80s/90s. My HS kid had to create one in a class last year. There is a template in Office for them still too. In the wild, you just have to go on vacation and stop in a visitor center somewhere to find SO MANY. (And frequently in the hotels near major attractions.)
congratulations - you've just (unintentionally) started your journey into quilting! This dress pattern is VERY reminiscent of the more complicated patterns for quilt tops
I agree with you to an extent about the following instructions. For the most part, if you follow the instructions you “should” be able to follow the pattern successfully. That being said, I have experienced some pattern instructions can be confusing. Not all pattern companies do a good job at explaining their process. I love that you made this dress! It turned out adorable. Props to your dedication for this very fastidious pattern!
This was super fun to see! For a few days my mum and I went through our fabric scrap pile and made over 2500 baby hats out of soft cotton etc. To donate to several hospitals in Guinee (country in Africa). The hats would be part of a care packet for mothers that just gave birth to their babies, to take home. It was a group effort and really a great wat to get rid of scraps. But also some effort because you have to take care with babyproofing the seams. And of course making sure there are no loose threads or anything.
I hardcore empathize with your piecing experience. It’s so rough! I sewed something like 300 diamonds together to make a corset dress on my channel. It took forever and was so brutal! You’re dress turned out amazing!!!
What I love is the "Go Canada" spirit you took this journey with. As a "thrifter" who likes re-imagining things himself, I definitely appreciate the concept. It may have been "Weird Barbie", but I saw a glammed up "Raggedy Anne" vibe throughout your entire concept to finished product. Awesome work!
When assembling any kind of patchwork, you can also stick little squares of beige/green masking tape with numbers or letters on them on the fabric pieces themselves, to help keep the order straight during the transfer to the sewing machine. As long as you don’t iron over the tape, it won’t leave a mark.
this shape of dress is my favourite!! could you maybe make a short where you show the end result in a bit more detail? I'd love to see how it moves and fits in a full body shot if that's possible!! Your videos are so calming always ❤❤
I rarely buy enough fabric so I'm always piecing bits together. The Collins Top by In The Folds (an indie designer) is my go to for a quick scrap project. I love this look and would wear that dress everyday and I'm okay if that makes me weird Barbie 😂
Being ambitious but cheap means I always buy slightly too little than I need lol luckily my obaachan was a seamstress so she has all these leftovers she's trying to get me to make stuff out of so she showed me how to really use it all
That pattern was a WILD ride! I had so much simultaneous anxiety and determination just watching you assemble it. I love patterns and lean on them heavily. I often come to your channel for inspo for knowledge I hope to gain of sewing over time.
i am defo a do-easy-part-first to gain momentum!! cant wrap my head around doing-hard-part-first it sounds so burn-outy 😅 absolutely beautiful process and the colors are AHHHH 😆
lol Wendy (correctly!!) accusing people who are “bad at baking” of just being bad at following instructions right out of the gate is so funny to me. IT’S TRUE!
While the dress isn't one I'd ever make, you look adorable in it and it's the perfect dress for Weird Barbie. Yay for putting a sizeable dent in your stash.
Your costume look was so wonderful! (I hope the dress gets to do summer things like farmer's markets and picnics, too.) The pattern made up such a cute dress. If I made it, to make life totally unsupportable, I am dreaming of topping each piece with a single colour of something thin, translucent, and crisp. I also want to insert in seemingly random (but totally planned) pieces, between the cloth and translucent layers, small things that would bounce around freely. I am thinking a flower a pebble a ring a charm etc. But, I also know that I am not going to make this, so there's that.
The whole time I was watching I was getting Weird Barbie vibes and loving it and then she revealed Weird Barbie in the reveal and I can't describe the joy I got from this 😊
Yes to following instructions! I'm self taught, and so I'm finally learning to do some steps even when it isn't explicitly written (looking at you understiching). One thing that drives me nuts is when patterns don't tell you to finish the shoulder seams if there isn't a lining. Maybe it really isn't necessary, but I get so annoyed if I forgot to do it because it just seems unfinished to me.
Gorgeous! I kept looking at your top stitch remainder thread and thinking of the sewists in my life I could ask to give that to me, so I can work it into my collage paintings. It's so pretty!
Omg I'm so excited you used this pattern!! I've been admiring it for a while, love this designer!!! They also have a lot of other cool designs :) it turned out so pretty!! You're better than me lol I would've just slapped a lining on it so I wouldn't have to overlock all those edges 💀
You switching colors for your top-stitching reminds me of a scrap quilt I made where I was also trying to use as many thread colors as possible (I had a black border around all the rainbow quilt blocks so the thread popped) so I completely understand your vision and feel your pain
this singular video reminded me why i started sewing, and watching your channel in the first place!! you make it so fun! and remind me i don't have to finish every project in a dayy lmaoo or rush it, when i can just go patiently and positively :) thanks wendy & welldone
8:16 "The babydoll cut isn't what I usually gravitate towards" comment about the shirt made me laugh in a video where you're making a babydoll dress! (Also your white quilted wrap coat is one of your most iconic items imo--I'd call it babydoll too.) Anyway, love the dress--all that piecing paid off, and it's perfect for Weird Barbie :D
I love the idea of using up all the scrap fabrics and I love the final result- it’s adorable. However, if I wanted to do super complicated patterning to get particular shapes, and all of that, then I would just start with the fancy quilting. I am strictly a rectangle or square quilter I don’t do the fancy stuff. Very cute and I love all the pink and definitely got the weird Barbie thing going on but no. I love the brocade it’s so pretty.
this is, simply, so so complex and you seem to move through every stage of the process with grace and humor (as usual)! the dress is absolutely beautiful! :') amazing work!
Omg I would definitely love to make this dress. I would choose knee length over midi for sure. I haven't sewn in so long but you've inspired me to get into that part of myself again.
This is my literal dream to be able to make. I'm brand brand new to sewing and I wouldn't dream of touching this anytime soon but I like thinking of it as a hopefully-eventually.
I start from an easy part because I do need to trick myself to just START anything to begin with and when I’m in flow, I know I can handle the hard part😉so much respect for you using the scraps… I will add a similar in my AW23 projects. Your dress pattern seems too much for me so I’m thinking to patchwork a princess seam dress😚😚😚
You are spot on with your baking comment! :D I love to cook because I can improvise but baking is definitely a struggle... and I sew without patterns too 🤣
I think this is the best thing you've ever made. It looks so good on you and the colour scheme is absolutely delicious. I really really love it. Well done. ♥
I've been seeing this dress all over socials too! Now seeing the pattern coming together I'll rename it "save the planet and lose your sanity" it turned out sooo cute❤ for some reason when I look at my scraps they are so varied I can't seem to make them harmonizing together 😅😅
The end result was amazing!!! The planning that went into this was just *chef's kiss* delightful! I also wanted to know where I could get those overalls?
I’m loving the weird Barbie look, and the fact you could totally wear that dress again. But also those star buttons remind me of the little candies the soot sprites eat in Spirited Away
Wendy making this a weird barbie costume at the end is ICONIC. How does she pull off chic and weird at the same time?? I'm in love 😍
"people who say they're bad at baking are actually just bad at following instructions" I FEEL HEARD
She is talking about me😂.
Most people think you can wing it but because baking relies on chemistry for a lot of the texture and taste, you have to do it in the right order and the right amount.
Well, I am pretty good at following instructions, just have never seen a good, precise and all-covering baking or cooking instruction.
I suck at cooking.
Im not good at following instructions and my baking still turns out 😂
Also, why do people still try to use volumes rather than weights to measure. I think that's why a lot of people have problems.
Oh I NEVER do the hard parts first. I do the fun parts first, and then I agonize over having to do the boring parts and end up procrastinating until I have almost no time left on my proposed deadline, of course.
This turned out so cute!
Kindred spirits 💕
RELATABLE
The fun parts first are a good idea if you use them as a way to get started: you need less activation energy to start with the easy task. Once you're at it, just continue.
Smells like ADHD 😂 I’m exactly the same
I'm an author and omg do I feel this. So many of my projects start with me knocking out all the fun scenes in just a couple of days and then agonising over the buildup for weeks, if not months. Thankfully with sewing I can at least convince myself to do things in a logical order
I believe one of my main characteristics is excitedly starting a project and then giving it up before I even get to the hard parts
Same
I feel like a quilter would be really good at making this dress. It's so beautiful and I love a patchwork look but I could never.
your pre-sewing organization is SO satisfying to me, i always sew in a sort of ADHD rage and it involves ALL GO NO THINK which only works out about half of the time lol
i relate to this 110% hahah
Same. I definitely grab and play… no organisation. Usually no pattern either. ADHD AF.
Birgitta Helmersson's "Zero Waste Patterns" book has one for a singlet/spaghetti strap tank top made from remnants. But if you can make a patchwork rectangle from your scraps, you could use any of her zero waste patterns to make a garment!

Definitely going to check out that book!

Yes I find her videos are too much bla bla but missing the critical part of showcasing of the final product
@@skyscope8409watch someone else then… we all love hearing her talk
Same! Such an abrupt end to a dress that took 10+ days
I miss the fun photoshoot you do after hustling through your project. I think the dress deserves more picturesss
I love how Wendy has become, not only a great inspiration & teacher, but also so very entertaining. I needed this video!!!! Love you Wendy!
This is so kind love you too!!
That shot of you sighing and eating strawberries gave SUCH ghibli movie vibes

One thing I struggle with a lot is the spatial and dimensional aspects of sewing instructions. I think I have some level of dyscalculia. Which is why video instructions are really helpful, but I still struggle a lot with making patterns and their directions make sense.
That sounds more like my ADHD ;)
Yep.. For some reason I cannot follow instruction step by step. I go 1, 2, 3, 2, 3, 10, 9, 8, 3 and then fail a recipe or a laboratory test 😅
Scrap fabric is always wonderful for scrunchies, bookmarks, pillowcases, cup cozies, and even scarves!
Oooo good idea, I should make some scrunchies and pillow cases
Ah so fun! I love the short length!

What an insane pattern that was, so many pieces! Sure gives that quilty vibe. It looks so good!
That was a painstakingly brilliant project! I sew admire your courage to take on such a challenging dress. Your weird Barbie is perfection
congratulations - you've just (unintentionally) started your journey into quilting! This dress pattern is VERY reminiscent of the more complicated patterns for quilt tops
Hearing Marla say, "Hi Mommy," made my whole week 🥺
You did it! It is so pretty! I love the fabrics you chose. I was dizzy before you even started sewing! What a puzzle! And such preparation! 😮😍👍
