I'm a beginning sewist with ambitions to make my wedding dress, but wanting to make something that looks tailored, possibly even couture. I have a similar "short waist," and I've been contemplating for many months on how to achieve the shape I want. It just seems like almost no matter what sewing challenge I'm pondering, sooner or later you share a video that demonstrates so beautifully and clearly ways I can accomplish what I'd like to achieve. You have no idea what a blessing your channel has been to me. I am very excited about the silk dupioni swatches that will serve as the base layer. I'm torn between the gold/Bordeaux or the gold/mint green. The latter is more fun, and the former is more elegant. You are an inspiration to this mid-30s amateur sewist. Thank you for everything!
I'd originally intended to make my own wedding dress but by chance I found The Dress in a discount bin at a bridal show... but the shape of it actually made me look like I had hips (which I don't have much of, on top of having all of an inch between top of hip and bottom rib), because the dress had a V-waist and also a really fluffy gauzy skirt part that floofed out just perfectly over the hoop skirt my friend found me at the thrift store. Hope that helps, and congrats on your wedding! Biggest advce to a beginning sewist is to make a mockup, and if it's not right, make another, commercial patterns just aren't made for us short-waisted folks.
I'm also a beginner seamstress! I got engaged 2 years ago (getting married in a month!!) and chose to make my own dress for the same reasons as you. I had a few appointments at bridal stores, but each time I tried to explain what I wanted, I felt like they did not understand what I meant with 'structured silhouette', even when I showed them photos. They kept showing me dresses with like two boning channels that did nothing to alter my shape, and called it a 'corset'... Even though I'm a beginner, I've found it a really rewarding challenge to learn corsetry, and quite honestly, with all the resources out there on UA-cam it hasn't been that difficult! I'm wishing you all the luck on your wedding dress making journey
Hey ♥️ thank you for your sweet comment! I’m happy my videos are helping you with your wedding dress. If you have any further questions feel free to write me on instagram!
Hi 🙋🏾♀Random Gemini on the internet, here to advocate for both fun AND elegance, at the same time! But seriously. Mint and gold together can be SO elegant, if you style it right 😘 Since you're going through all the effort to make your own dress, I want it to be EVERYTHING you want it to be. Perhaps find different accessories for the reception and ceremony. Like, a funky fascinator for one and a long, crowned, jeweled veil for the other! If you want two sets of everything (gloves, jewelry, etc.), put the bridal accessories you want (or a fundraiser for them) on your shower registry or something; I think the community will want to support this plan 🙌🏾💕
Absolutely stunning! I love that you show these understructures in your videos, theyre something I've had to learn by trial and error because i think you're the first youtuber ive seen properly do these kinds of projects
Such beautiful work, and I think it's really important that people know about all these tricks and secrets in couture dress making. It's so easy to look at red carpets and think, "I'm never going to look like that", but the reality is, they don't look like that either! With modern fashion I think we've really forgotten that clothing can do more than cover the body, it can completely recreate it. For centuries, women achieved the fashionable silhouette through their clothing and it wasn't so important what their actual bodies looked like. It's only fairly recently that people have been told the only way to look "right" is by doing this diet or that exercise. Hopefully next time someone sees a celebrity with a flawless waist and perfect hourglass hips, they can think, "wow what a wonderful, clever dress" and not "wow my body could never be that perfect".
Unfortunately...99% of those Red Carpet looks can ONLY be worn for the person who is wearing it...and therein lies the problem. In the 'old' days...when women (and men) wore specific foundation garments...'fashion' could be worn by everyone. A poor person may not have been able to purchase a silk or brocade that a wealthier person could, but they could still make the SAME garment in a less expensive fabric.
How about accept you don’t have hourglass body and you shouldn’t care if you already have a healthy body? Hourglass body exist and continue to exist. Deny this will creat more insecure people when they will see a real hourglass body… Actually, some people think have a less than 23inch waist is impossible. And when they see that it exist they are more uselessly insecure. Just work on yourself. Try to have a real self esteem.
Wow! Stunning!! Explains why ‘red carpet events’ make any ‘body’ look beautiful, and why those dresses are SO expensive. The amount of work and fittings that go into their construction is eye-opening.
I love the focus on the small details of craftsmanship that make these illusions work so seamlessly. Stunning work as always, an incredibly beautiful creation to watch come to life.
Ms. Lepold, your knowledge and craftsmanship are beyond outstanding! Artists of your caliber usually don't share in depth details of their work even when overviewing. I very much appreciate your confidence in your abilities and your willingness to share information with those of us who haven't received formal dressmaking or tailoring training. Your soothing voice is assuring. I'm hoping to attempt a portion of your technique at some point in the future. I'm hoping polyester organza will work as a base. Please update us additional details about this project if you have the time in the future. I'm sure younger views interested in design will be as grateful as I am.👏👏👏♥♥♥🥰
Thank you so much for taking your time and leaving this comment! I’m glad you enjoyed the video ♥️ and even though I haven’t used organza on this context I know people who used it for something similar, so it should work! 🥰
I don't know if you were ever told that your videos are not only very informative but also soothing. Watching with ease and absorbing every thing, like riding along smoothly. Is the best way to put it for me.❤ Not like , and now you will have to do it this way and that way.
Thank you ♥️ I think the most important thing in sewing is to do it calm and thoughtful. With all this short form content and sped up sewing sequences it looks so rushed. That’s why I decided to show it as calm as possible. I’m glad you appreciate it ♥️
The dress is stunning! I love to watch you create your amazing designs. I like that you showed how you can change the shapes of the under clothing ( and outer ) to make a dress look stunning, and very flattering, even if you don't have the exact proportions on your own. I thought the corset was amazing on it's own. It felt to me, like when you see the architectural drawings and plans to an amazing house or castle! I thought laying out what you were using for this project was a very nice touch in the beginning of video. Just incredible as always!! Wishing you joy and peace and a beautiful Spring , Audri
Hey Audri, thanks for your comment 🥰 I do think pattern making is a bit like architecture too! You are constructing a building that only holds its shape with the right support. I’m happy you liked the video ♥️
normally i would not take a moment to watch the topic since my hobby of interests is knitting and crocheting. but you have done such a quality intrigue almost movie like , it felt like i was stepping into a partial dream world yet full reality at the same time. its much like going to the coffee shop and for once instead of buying the usual that is my commonly favorite, instead i take the house's suggestion of the exclusive coffee blend of the day one time only and risking that it could make or break my day. you have a new sub to your channel
Oh this was such a cool video! I admit it rarely think about the added structure to the garments we see in handmade pieces unless they are made to standout. As always not only is the finished dress a clear labor of love but so is the video itself in its presentation and composition. An absolute treat to view on a stormy afternoon.
I’m always so inspired about your process, designs and the care of how you put everything together; I feel I always learn something new and specially with this video, thank you for sharing this with us 💖
Wow, wow, wow! I don't think I've ever finished watching a sewing video all the way through, but this was the most beautiful video I've ever seen, I couldn't stop watching! Everything, the cinematography, the lighting, the dress itself, it was all so beautiful. 10/10 I loved this
A lot of people judge the past based on what is left over, not understanding how the past survives. Like thinking...assuming really...that corsets were constricting devices, instead of being more along the lines of weight distribution. Understandable to a certain degree because of extent garments are often of smaller sizes...sizes that worn for a short time by teenagers. And we forget how many layers along with how many yards were in a skirt, were worn which increased the hip size when in turn made the waist seem even smaller.
Another utterly beautiful dress and video. I love your approach to corsetry. You embrace its sculptural potential while seeing to your own needs and comfort. I greatly enjoyed watching you make it all.
Dear God... Why am I just seeing this now. I love you, I love your channel and thank you for blessing us with this wonderful tutorial, no one has done this on UA-cam. Thank you Frieda.
I learn so much from watching you work. I also like the calm music and your voice calmly explaining what you are doing and why. Thank you for giving me confidence.
Thank you so much for sharing so much detail! I have told so many of my clients that a ‘simple’ design is never truly simple when you see what is underneath and the amount of work that goes into them. Stunning work as always ❤
Thank you so much for pointing out that people with not much room between hips and ribs often can't get much waist reduction even with a corset, and ALSO for sharing that you're not comfortable with anything constrictive around the waist, I'm in the same boat on both counts, with a short waist and ribs that get really irritated if anything's the least bit tight around the bottom of my ribcage.
I think it’s important to think about that when sewing! I’m making a dress that 100% fits my measurements and my taste, why not also my preferences in terms of comfort 🥰
@@friedalepold Absolutely. I've figured out at this point in my life that I just won't wear things that aren't comfortable, and I've figured out how to make things comfy, now my challenge as a maybe a bit better than novice sewist is to find ways to flatter my lack of figure while still being comfortable and convenient...
I desperately want to be able to make something like this for my wedding. What beautiful craftsmanship. Thank you for sharing with us. Such a pleasure to watch.
Woow I really think the corset and the wide hip part are beautiful pieces on their own. And the video as well is so well made! and omg the dress at the end is soo gorgeous 😍
I was just mesmerized with your work and the way you work in fully sophisticated way and the result came out was favorably. I do watch "Bernadette Banner" video of couture making and now find a lot similarities between you too.
Wow 😍 at first I was like I ain’t watching 19 min of this, but then you caught me 😍 I don’t know what I enjoyed the most, the video itself or the construction of the corset/dress
Your videos are crafted to perfection, just like your designs!!! This dress was so well made and fit better than a glove!! I'm in love with the idea of the undergarment as a dress, similar to what Galliano did for Dior one season. I just love all that detail and the overlapping seams on the hip attachment were really captivating to me!!! Your channel is bliss!! Thank you for sharing your wonderful creativity 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
You are such an amazing artist! Each shot in your videos is so cinematic in addition to the superb work you do on the clothes you sew. This dress came out beautifully!
I loved this video. I have learned so much even though I have sewing for many yrs. Loved the idea of the zip ties, you did an excellent job. Loved the explanations while you were working. The video was excellent, clear , close up shots, I could see just what you were doing. Loved that you verbalized your considerations & how you made your decisions. I can’t wait to see many more video’s. A definite fan, keep up the good work.
I love your sketch books filled with dress sketches, fabric and trim swatches. I also love your pattern material. Is it vellum? Anyway gorgeous gown and corset under layer. The sound of your sewing machine is weirdly soothing to me. 😂
Brilliant...and your production is excellent! I have made a a couple dresses like this, but have a way to go before I reach this level of skill. Either way, they are fun and rewarding to make...not to mention beautiful. Brava!
