How to weight and deweight your dirt bike︱Cross Training Enduro

  • Weighting and deweighting your dirt bike is important for techniques -jumps, obstacles, ruts, clearing gaps, hill climbs, and finding traction. Conversely, if you deweight at the right moment, you minimise your air time and can get the bike back on the ground and accelerating sooner. If you see a gap or series of ruts ahead, weighting and deweighting the bike allows you to clear these if you have enough speed. With ruts, even if your wheels are hitting them you are less likely to be deflected if your weight is not on the pegs. If you combine this with clutch and throttle, you get a lot of drive because you temporarily flatten the rear tyre and get a bigger tyre patch. Where possible, keep one foot on a footpeg so you can still weight and deweight the bike as needed. Remember start with easy practice drills on flat ground to get your timing right, then work this into all the techniques mentioned. Good luck! Weighting and deweighting the bike works great for many low speed techniques such as hopping logs, pivot turns and rear wheel hops - but it's also very effective at faster speeds for jumps. Many of these are low speed techniques, but weighting and deweighting is also very effective at speed for jumps, finding traction on faster hill climbs, and clearing gaps and ruts. Weighting the bike at the right moment can dramatically increase how far your bike jumps if you need to clear rough ground after the jump. In most cases, you will weight the front and rear suspension equally, but you can put more emphasis on the front for techniques such as pivot turns and wheelies. In many cases, if you are sitting on the bike in rough terrain or tackling obstacles, your body is just dead weight on the bike, and becomes part of the problem. If you stand then weight and deweight correctly, your body weight becomes part of the solution. Originally weighting and deweighting was a trials technique, where the rider's weight compresses the suspension to gain traction or climb over obstacles. You push down on the footpegs to compress the suspension. As it rebounds, you also bend your legs to take your weight off the footpegs to lighten the bike. Timing this can be difficult at first, so often it's best to not worry about the clutch. But once you get the hang of it, then start to combine a controlled drop of the clutch too as this makes a big difference for more advanced techniques. If you are in rough terrain, you can still weight your bike even if you are 'paddling' the ground with one foot.

    Another option for you that you may or may not have considered is opening your own amazon store, you can put products that only you use and that you support, and for the buyer it doesn't cost them anymore, and you get a commission from amazon every time you sell a product through your "store". Might help alleviate some of the pressure from the economic downturn. I can tell you us Canadians are feeling the pain, our dollar was below 70 cents USD and there have been tens of thousands of layoffs in the oil fields!
    Keep up the great vids!

    A few months ago, probably June, I was riding in a sand pit that has washed up to ~6 feet across. I didn't know they were so big, I was goin along 2nd or 3rd WFO and saw a huge one up ahead and I was sure I was atleast going to break my balls or a few bones. I weighted and de-weighted and floated right over, didn't feel anything. I believe you atleast saved my balls, perhaps more. Thanks for my balls, Barry.

    after watching your vid I realise that I often do this subconsciously after doing motocross in my youth. often trying to de weight over a jump to spend more time on the ground for greater speed during a race and weighting the pegs when playing about to get more air.
    I will have to focus on this more the next time I go into the bush here in NZ.

    At 4:25 this is really good of you to be going G.Jarvis slow here. I have seen a lot of videos of stump jumping this one remarkably is great. Why! Well for us novice stump jumpers your approach is done with practice of course. You stab the wild beast with your arms PUSHING hard down on handlebars to decompress those forks really comically well! Then your compressing rear with a sneak in compress with your legs compressing the rear. I put this in SLOW MOTION and just enjoy it. Control here like no other.
    Question here is "Did you do a double Blip here"...? You did this with the clutch on first Blip popping up a bit.... Then Second Blip when you had Rear ready to leave the ground and hit side of pipe? So would you say you where feathering the clutch A LOT in these moments. Thanks for this video

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  4 роки тому +1

      that was my attempt at a double clip at 4:25 lol. very hard to remember if i used the clutch much at all. possibly as i never geared the RR300 down from stock. i know on the xtrainer it's geared a bit lower so i don't need to feather the clutch on those slow approaches. glad you enjoyed the vid!

    so when de weighting your pretty much slighty jumping up of the pegs? I find if I do this it feels like I'm going to be launched off the bike haha I always weight the bike but not sure I have the whole de weight aspect down as I normally just put weight on the bike an then return to the normal standing position

    sorry to hear about your job mate , few of us arrgh feeling the pinch so your not alone , least fuel is cheap atm , im no expert so this is an opinion, weighting and de weighting should come naturally as months / years , ride time progress, you either de weight or enjoy having the seat punch you in the ring all day, each to their own,

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +mad benny good point benny, i think you naturally learn parts of weighting as you ride more and figure out your body positioning, but i know particularly the faster stuff i've only just started using it the last six months. re: the job, all good for a few months at least but will need to get it sorted eventually...

    With weighting and de-weighting the bike to lift the front wheel or get over obstacles how much should you pull up on the bars. I find pulling up on the bars tires out your arms pretty quick. Are you better to just use your body weight, just using the bars for the controls to not tire your arms?

  • @mindinabox-music
    @mindinabox-music 8 років тому +1

    If I try to bunny hop it looks similar to your style. I'm nearly same tall too. I think the problem is that because of our tallness we have too much weight on the rear wheel and we should move our chest closer to the handlebar during jumping. Of course we can adapt with training and fix it somehow....but in my opinion all the bikes are too short for us or the handlebar is just too close to our body. Someone should build a proper dirtbike for tall people! :)
    Anyway...great video like always!!!

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +2

      +Stefan Poiss i've wondered the same thing stefan. but i know some of the extreme enduro riders are tall guys and i've seen them do massive bunny hops e.g. lifted the bike six inches in the air and done a perfect arc, landing front wheel first. after seeing that i wondered if it was more my technique...

    • @mindinabox-music
      @mindinabox-music 8 років тому +1

      I know they can do it. :) But I think all the pros grew up with bike driving and they adopted during growing up. I mean they are doing this since they were childs. Hope you understand what I mean. If I just look at pics from you with your bike (the same with me) I see a very tall guy driving with a too small (but nice :)) bike. I mean relax, drink a coffee and look at it.... the ergonomic is not really fitting. I know we cant change that easy but I really believe it would be easier for us with taller bikes. How hard can it be to make the frame somehow longer? :)

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +2

      +Stefan Poiss the obvious start for me was bar risers, steg pegz and fastway footpegs in the down and back position... but our coach chris birch said that risers and steg pegz aren't good, even for tall riders. i took off the risers but i'm keeping the rest on though.

    • @mindinabox-music
      @mindinabox-music 8 років тому +1

      +CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES
      Hard to argue with Chris Birch but it's hard to accept for me. It's like someone says I must wear shoe size 44 because 46 is bad :) Mabye bar risers are bad because of bending or whatever but adjusting the size of the bike to the body can't be a bad idea.
      Maybe I will buy a Beta Cross Trainer, cut this thing in 3 parts and iron it a bit longer together. I will let you know if it was a fail. I'm a honest guy :)

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +2

      +Stefan Poiss i did argue with chris birch for a while actually... :) well it was just a discussion. i said i'm an older rider so comfort is important now, not just good technique. he shrugged his shoulders and 'do what you want'. i might put bar risers on the bike again as my knees hurt after riding.

    What kind of bike should a street rider use to start trying to ride off pavement? I have never owned a small bike to play with balance points and compression. My bike is a little too heavy and me a little too light to really feel what my weight is doing to my suspension. After watching your videos, I am absolutely horrified at my lack of skills. I am worried I have been riding incorrectly for a few years now. Anyways, I want to try out a machine like these.... Can you recommend a good machine for a guy like me to start on? I'm 5'7" and 135 lbs if that makes any difference. My height can be a problem on some machines. Thanks.!

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +Lit Rocket Studios that's a very good question but i think there would be way more criteria... budget? new or secondhand? riding to the tracks or using a trailer? two or four stroke preference? what sort of offroad riding e.g. cruisy or aim to get into gnarlier stuff as you get the skills?

    • @Jbuds0910

      +CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES I am thinking second hand simply because I don't need shiny plastic to learn. Crazy enough the Yamaha unreview you did actually appealed to me. +CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES as far as two or four stroke, I do not know. I am of the understanding that a two stroke is going to make more power because every stroke is a power stroke but also here is Massachusetts they have done away with almost all 2 stroke motors.

      +shafly67 lol i've got reasonable skill (occasionally) in first and second gear, but i figure any escort duties might require some speed at times. :)

    Set up a PayPal account and ask. You are providing a product, a good product.
    Nothing's wrong with making something from it. Hope everything is ok!

      +SpkStephen thanks for the suggestion stephen, all will be fine for a few months. i'll set up an account eventually but i'd still like to make a special vid just for donors to say thanks and not feel like i'm freeloading. :)

      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +jonno85uk quite a few guys have suggested something like that as they wanted to get me to romaniacs, jonno. but figure i've left that a bit late in life and $10,000 sounds way too much for four days of riding! i'd use something like patreon if ever i had a specific project in mind and thought i could give something back at the end of it... but for now i'll aim for a special 20 min vid to just offer guys for a small donation... should be fun, i'll make sure it's particularly silly. :)

    I find it hard to weight my dirtbike because I'm 14 183cm and 65kg on a 250

    • @Finchnz
      @Finchnz 8 років тому +1

      +Husqvarna enduro if you feel your cannot affect your bike in a significant way because its a 250 and you weigh 65kg then look the suspension setup. if its too hard on preload and you cannot get the correct sag, get it revalved and re sprung, no point riding a bike that does not work for you.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +Husqvarna enduro yep, as finchnz says, look at your suspension. our romaniac rod is about your weight and can do all these techniques fine on his stock 250EXC although he may have backed off on the damping settings.

    you know i won't watch an ad but i would buy a t shirt that you made you seem to possess half a mind and are proficient in the humor department put a gut busting slogan on a t shirt and before you know it is beta babes and ktm rider all begging to breath the rarefied air that is your holyness while you ride away on your new Africa twin

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +2

      +ryands126359 i'd love to design a t-shirt, i'm a graphic designer and did one for our trials club last year. but i think international postage would be the killer... it they make those africa twins in a sub-120kg enduro version i'll be all over it like a rash lol.

      +CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES think of all the uk youtubers that have merch they sell to the u.s. and else where they probably make more money on shirts then a channel synced with adsence but hey you are the professional and I'm just the guy who rides a 36 year old twin shock honda on saturdays

    Maybe in the near future there will be an electronic system for weighting/deweighting the bike for us lazy bastards. In the same way electric starters help the feeble?

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +JacksonEnduro lol i'll be up for the mechanical or electronic assistance i can... clake have an electronic anti-stall and an autoclutch in development...

      +CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES I still think that electric levers will be in the near future. Adjust as light or heavy as you want with sensors that communicate to caliper/clutch. I should look into something like that...

    Renting a room out for the summer with complimentary back rubs for your most loyal subs would probably help:) That riding gear should look like a F1 racers fire suit, monetize, sponsors, product placement and commercials. Stop hooking and start pimping.

    yes yes weight and deweight i understand the concept but what if you are an 18 year old underdeveloped 100 pound gumby that can't compress even the lightest of suspension

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +ryands126359 that's a good point ryands, but with the proper suspension setup i think you'd still be able to do it... our own romaniac rod is a featherweight but can still get enough bounce to make the techniques work, i suspect he's put lighter springs in and backed off on the damping.
