Thank you I've just bought a neo I've been flying a mavic 2 Pro for some years and a p4 before that but this was really useful to find out how much more I can do with the neo 😀📷🚁
Wow, so strict in some countries! Here in NZ, so far, it's very relaxed, and there is no license on registration for a drone up to 25kg! (For personal non-commercial use) We can even fly in controlled airspace, although the drone must stay under the peak house roof line.
This was a well put together video covering all the main and important points but the biggest problem we still have is people not knowing the law, even existing drone pilots. I bet if you did a survey of everyone with a drone in the UK the amount of people with a flyer or operator ID would be surprisingly low. I have seen this with people claiming to have other drones but asking very basic questions about where or how they can fly the neo, questions that are easily answered by just looking at the drone code which they would have had to do to get their flyer ID, like if they need a spotter to fly with goggles or if they can just fly anywhere. It makes me think they have been flying their larger drones without a flyer or operator ID and without knowing the law.
Wow things have definitely changed from back in the day I was building & flying drones when we had to rip apart a Nintendo Wii controller and build the firmware on Arduino 😂 I gave up the hobby with lack of time due to a new work venture. The drones we made were pretty dangerous lol but it was a challenge to get it actually flying and we quickly learnt flying skills now I see everything has GPS , auto everything so I'm not surprised that accident's happen as I can't imagine many camera drone operators could fly a drone in acro, new technology is great but the problem is you can't always relay on it to get you out of trouble. Anyways thanks for the video it's given me inspiration to dig out my drone but by the looks of things I'll need a license now 😢
That is awesome! There was a built-in safety back then too though. These days you do not need any skills to fly these drones and that is where the extra regulations come in. Hope you get back into it.

Very helpful video. :) I don't know if you still monitor the the comments, but I've downloaded Drone Assist as recommended, and watched your video on it. But I'm still at a loss, I'm on the South coast, Christchurch area, and virtually every square inch in my area has some sort of restriction. Most of the coast is SSSI and few have any details and none have a date period. And virtually everything has a yellow restriction that tells me "an area where my drone may raise security, privacy or safety concerns'. Does that mean I can't fly there, which is almost everywhere? I've just bought a Neo, (although I used to fly FPV racing drones).
I am on the Essex Coast and have numerous SSSI areas around me. I contacted Natural England regarding one and to be honest the response I got from them was less than helpful even down to the fact that my question did not fit their profile to answer therefore they wouldn't. Arguably you could say that you shouldn't fly in any SSSI however as we all know each SSSI is determined based on different criteria and therefore drone flying may have no impact at all. The information on the Drone Assist app regarding SSSIs is too broad in my opinion and needs drilling down if drone flyers aren't going to make mistakes flying or they need to just say no flying at all in which case there is no argument. For now I am just avoiding SSSIs in my area altogether.
Looks like I was flying my neo in the same park yesterday in deepcut. Can't wait for the neo 2 with a better camera, lol, but I think this is the best deal I've ever got from dji as usual Sean great advice 😁👌👍 🇬🇧
Can you use the neo or mini to hover over or near a football pitch to film a team training so you can go over the footage with the team to analyse positions, plays etc?
Yes. You would be able to do that. I would ensure that everyone on the field is aware and therefore becomes involved and try to hover where the drone will not be over too many people grouped together. The issue you might find is battery life, as with even a slight breeze, the Neo battery will run down quickly. You could consider doing the same with something like the Mini 3/4 as they can take more wind and have a bette camera and battery life. Good luck with it.
Hi Sean!! Thank you very much for this information. I have a few years experience in flying drones in México, but when I came to the UK for work, I was overwhelmed by all the rules and the fear of being fined, so I left my DJI AIR and my Mini drones back in Mexico. But now with your videos I can properly start from zero to start again. I'm very excited about getting a Neo as I loved the Tello and used it for quick photos and indoors. I believe in order to have better control of the unit in case something happens, it would be better to operate it with the remote control isn't? What do you think about this?? Cheers!!!

Planes shouldn't be anywhere near that level in built up areas. I ask this as I am on the outskirts of a RFZ and need to ask permission to fly my drone, even just to check the tiles on my roof
I think that could be achieved with a similar system to the USA. The LAANC system gives digital permissions up to a certain height around aerodromes. I am always very jealous when I see people using it on YT, etc. Altitude Angel does have a digital permission system for some airports, but it is still a full permission rather than a quick thing.
Hi Sean, new subscriber here. At 09:20 you mention having to take control at a moments notice. Does that mean in the UK you’re able to fly the drone legally without having the phone or controller attached? I interpret the EU and US rules to be more stringent permitting only “controlled flight” and not “autonomous flight” someone linked to your video as a source for uncontrolled autonomous drone usage. Is that your interpretation too?
Hi Timothy! It is a really interesting question that has two areas of thought from me. Firstly, in terms of legislation. I personally think that certain aspects are not defined clearly enough in UK legislation to exclude the use of the Neo in autonomous mode without a controller. There are also sections of the legislation that could be used to support it. However, it is more of a thought exercise in many ways because when it comes to enforcement, I do not see police or CPS showing an interest in this size of drone being used without a controller. If the same method was released for anything larger, I would expect to see a response. So perhaps a Mini 4 Pro operating autonomously without a controller. So, in strict legislation terms, I think you could argue both ways, but my personal interpretation is that the Neo is legal in the UK when used without a controller. However, in 'real world' terms, I would not expect enforcement or the courts to take the time to analyse the question when we are talking about such a low risk.
@@Geeksvana thanks, I think you’re right. A drone of this size and availability due to low pricing will attract people that don’t even register as an operator, or read the manual. Originally they wanted to charge a good chunk more but a backlash lowered it. Since then, the CAA have raised it slowly... I think it should be free.
