Mitch's voice was absolutely perfect for the lead on that! Kirstie and Scott killed it on the background parts, and of course, "Meat & Potatoes" can't be beat as a rhythm section. That they not only did what required looping, sampling, and studio effects in the original live and acapella, but made it sound better in the process is quintessential Pentatonix.
PTX's version is SO much better to me! I agree she has a really good voice, but I didn't like the effects used in her version. It kept sounding like a cd skipping to my ears and that's all I could think about every time they occurred.
Jerod, I completely agree. PTX is soooo much better. Saying this may upset some people but to me, the original (I have listened to it before) is what is wrong with so much music today. Overproduced, electronically enhanced, auto tuned, etc. Definitely NOT my kind of music. But, PTX, just 5 people with 5 microphones blowing it completely out of the water. That is talent and skill to the max and why I love good a capella in general and PTX in particular.!
@@drwall1915 Yep. Really hard to beat PTX at anything. Come to think of it I don't think I have ever seen PTX really beat at anything to do with singing.
@@drwall1915 Mitch’s annunciation is next level. Truly as someone who is hard of hearing I miss so many lyrics and then PTX covers something and I hear all the lyrics for the first time.
The timing in the second part when Kirsten comes in with "fallin'" on the heels of Mitch's "roof is" and followed by Scott's "let me" just blew me away. I mean, how smart is that!! Kevin's crisp high hat symbol "t-t" "ah" and Avi's bass line (especially in their solo mid song) are more than I could have asked for. Love the side by side comparison. Not knockin' Kiara's version but stripped down the way PTX did it is the only way I will listen to this one! Thanks Jerod!
I totally agree with your comments. Kiiara had a cool idea with the song but PTX brought it to what it should be. Love your reactions and comparisons!! Keep 'em coming!
Im finally figuring out why PTX arrangements so compelling. They mostly start out simple, then throw out surprise after surprise. There always interesting and as the point Jerod makes, always superior musician ship and production. Too much echo and reverb in Kiiaras vrs. Yes Angels we have heard on high...Their first video on the official site. Still my favorite.

Jerod M I hope you’ll do the 2015 PTXperience still. There are a lot of same parts as in the documentary if you can’t post the footage from the documentary.
All their Christmas music is great of course. I am particularly fond of their original Christmas song and video called "that's Christmas to me". Then there's come all ye faithful, joy to the world, little drummer boy, silent night etc etc .....
Mitch has that high voice going on and for a second i though Mitch was singing at the start of it. I like theirs better but then there isn't to many of their covers that I don't like much better then the original.
The first time I heard the Kiiara version I thought it sounded *a lot* like a PTX arrangement, just with instruments. I wouldn't be surprised to find out she and/or her producer were fans. And so of course it's a foregone conclusion that PTX can do an even better version.
Thank you for this! I totally agree with your thoughts on it. I think it was a great 'idea' (thank the original for that) but I love that PENTATONIX got a much better effect of what they did, without all of the overproduction of it! PTX won me on this one. By far.
Awesome!! I agree completely, but I do like that woodblock sound in her video that they sort of replicated with snapping. Didn't hate the original, but it could've been better if it had been like the last 3rd all the way through, and yeah, I figured you'd say it wasn't your style.
❤️ I loved that laugh after PTX's version of the song! 😂 It was tinged with a bit of true Pentaholic "Oh, girl! Take a seat and let the experts handle this. Hope you have a pen and paper, cause you're gonna wanna be taking notes"! 😂😂 that was cute! But she did fine! The song just needed to be fleshed out.. a LOT!
I have never listened to Kiara before, and I doubt I will again. Nothing against her art, it's just not my choice. But I enjoy this piece by Pentatonix for it's complexity and flawless synchronization. Just 5 guys on a couch (ok, yes one is a woman) and they do better than dozens of people with rooms full of electronics.
Kiiara's original is amazing. I remember being mesmerized by the song and the video. But that was 3 years ago. Watching it again now, it seemed to go on FOR. EV. ER. What I found mesmerizing back then seems monotonous now. Then PTX comes on and I'm hypnotized again! I wanted it to go on and on. I haven't checked--is the Pentatonix version shorter than Kiiara's? It seems like it! But I know why. PTX added so much subtle variety to it. Every time chorus came around, it was a little different. Small changes to the melody, the background singing, the harmony, the beat, the bass, kept it fresh even after all these years. Jerod, I really miss your comparison videos! Somehow I never watched this one back when you posted it. You did exactly the right thing in withholding your commentary until after showing us both videos! The difference in quality is striking.
Jerod, I totally agree that PTX's version is off the charts better overall. Kiiara's version was too mechanical and I didn't care for the actual video. Vocally, PTX made this song so much better! Their tones are so pure and they blend so well together. Another great one Jerod. I see from the comments below that the On My Way Home one is blocked -- which would explain why I couldn't get it to load -- bummer. Those harmonies are the very reason I'm dead right now, when Mitch sings Heaven's gates open wide! Question: Do they even know how to disappoint...ummmm no!
This was great! Thank you for doing it. I’m reminded of what one of the judges-Shawn maybe?- said on one of the songs during the sing-off, that Avi did something in the song that had to have special effects added to accomplish. PTX really does this so incredibly well. Christmas song comparisons or even just commentary; definitely Angels..., maybe their version of Joy to the World, or Silent Night. They have done terrific versions of so many of them that you can’t go wrong with any of them.
You could replace Kiiara with anyone, J-Lo or someone in the same range and the original would sound the same. Can't say the same about Mitch. Very few singers can do what PTX can.
No one seems to notice--or at least, I've never seen anyone comment on it--that PTX adds a bit to the lyrics. "You say you're sorry, Honey, but you never really show..." and then Kiiara stops but Pentatonix adds "...you're sorry."
Am I the only one who couldn't wait for the original to be over so I could hear PTX's version? I agree with one of the previous poster's comments, it sounded really skippy to me.

To me Kiiara’s original sounds artificial, mechanically produced. What makes Pentatonix’s version so good is that they reproduced the same unique sounds vocally! They are really good at mimicking the pop sounds of today’s music!
GAHH! No it's NOT better, imho! I love the original, the first time I heard it, I thought it sounded really cool. These Pentatonix people are really talented, but they turned it into an R&B song, and I can't stand R&B. It's nice but... just no. Sappy af. Good reaction though.

Jerod M oh..okay gotcha👍
i literally hate that stuff at the beginning of the original i would turn it off immediately wouldn't even listen to the rest of it. I listened only to compare the two and found ptx to be 1000 times better! I also don't understand the lyrics at all even the words i can understand don't make a lick of sense in the real world lol
Also the sound of the record skip, really did not like that. And liked the way Mitch and Kirstie did it better.

NICE
To me Kiiara’s original sounds artificial, mechanically produced. What makes Pentatonix’s version so good is that they reproduced the same unique sounds vocally! They are really good at mimicking the pop sounds of today’s music!
I personally dont like this at all .... to much electronics ....
Bet Kiiara can't perform it live! We know Mitch and PTX can!
GAHH! No it's NOT better, imho! I love the original, the first time I heard it, I thought it sounded really cool. These Pentatonix people are really talented, but they turned it into an R&B song, and I can't stand R&B. It's nice but... just no. Sappy af. Good reaction though.
