On the "Roof is fallin'..." refrain, Kiiara needed to use electronic sampling and looping to handle the register change/drop. Mitch does it without even blinking. His ability to flawlessly shift from register to register is uncanny.
More than just overlaid, the chorus is entirely done with sampling. She doesn’t really sing the chorus she sings some note that they then feed into a sampling algorithm and play on a keyboard. And I’ve been told that that’s how it’s done when she does it in concert she doesn’t sing the chorus. Her keyboard player plays the chorus. That chorus is insanely difficult and Mitch just sings it like it’s nothing. Incredible.
🤗🤗 I don't even bother about going to see the original version because of PTX. Because it ends up being like a letdown. Seriously like artists that can take their radio version onto the stage and tweak it, scramble it, do crazy stuff with it just alone with their voices and stuff like beyoncé Tori Kelly Ariana just name a few off the top of my head you know just different ones like that I don't mind listening to the original versions in life performances.
This is the one that shows their incredible sense of timing. That close and complicated timing is done without skipping, missing beats, late falls, or even looking at each other. Even duets between well-known power performers doesn't come out this spot-on. The original was all computer and electronics work. Pentatonix was all voice work.
Avi started writing and performing folk music when he was14 or so. The music he does now runs along those lines but has a sound all its own. He has solo fans that run the gammet from Heavy Metal to Renegade Folk to choral arrangements. His last two EPs blew me away. The Ill Get By EP is full and richly produced (this was done with Mike Mogis and Scott Sievers) Then, in quarantine he produced the acoustic alternative versions. I always expect my jaw to hit the floor each time he releases something.

They are all amazing. Kevin looked like he was having the best time. He and Avi really handled the beat and the bass magnificently and The Trio was outstanding. Thank you so much for reacting to "Gold". It was an excellent choice.
This performance is a masterpiece. Avi and Kevin - the perfect basis for the whole song. Kirstin and Scott are a great complement to the main soloist, and Mitch forgot he was human. What he does in the chorus is extremely difficult. Moving from high to low sounds, between which there is such a long distance, at such a fast pace and still singing the text is extremely difficult. Vocal coaches say that not every vocalist can do this even after long exercises. And Mitch sang it like it was the easiest.
Hi Jon, this is a fabulous song to showcase Mitch’s vocal range, and how he can hold each note..... loving the cheerful, happy way your doing these reaction videos, and how you take the original song and video and play that first, so everyone can make a fair comparison. Thank you for playing more pentatonix, please please pretty please play more. Xxxxxxxxx
We get the Avi thing Jon - his voice is like a gentle breeze - we're so very lucky that the Trio stayed together for so long and met Avi and Kevin....there won't ever be another combination like them, even though Matt is outstanding and we love him- but the OG is just another level in my opinion. X
I love Avi. I love Matt. I wish Avi stayed with PTX. I am glad he is out on his own and creating his own art. Matt is amazing and talented in his own right. Matt adds a fun, playful, high emotion flavor to PTX. I love them both but differently. Avi's voice captivates me. I've made the comparison before but Avi is the only artist who not just hits me straight in my heart but his voice and his tone hit straight to my soul in such a soothing way it's like a balm to my soul I didn't know I needed until Avi showed me I did. No discredit to Matt. He is also amazing and is a great addition to PTX. They still sound so full with only 5 voices. But the honest truth is they're not the same and _that's okay._
@@jelinenanashi9466 Totally agree Jeline - Matt is such a ray of light and clearly the others have bonded with him over the past three years so easily. I think he's just one of those people who is grateful for every second of every day and that rubs off on everyone around him. X
This is actually the first reaction to this video that didn't make mention of Mitch, who sang lead. Everybody in this group is equally important to the overall sound and quality of everything they do. But this was Mitch singing like an angel. People request this song because of how beautiful his voice is in this number. If you go back and watch the beginning Scott is looking at Mitch through nearly the entire first verse with affection and pride because he loves Mitch's voice! People have put together compilation videos of Scott listening to other people sing and then Scott listening to Mitch sing. Scott is a Mitch fan, and so is Kirstie. They have said several times that sometimes they forget to sing their part because they're listening to Mitch. And Avi always introduced Mitch as having a beautiful voice that sounded like a little baby angel. I'm just sad because I was excited for you to hear Mitch's lead AND everybody else's roles? Mitch was the one that was in the spotlight for this number and he owned it. 😊 Did you notice he was singing? 😳
In Sup3rfruit's cover of "Rise", there's a second where Scott gives what I call a "secret smile" a moment when Mitch is singing. I love it! Each video I have a favorite at the beginning. At the end of each video I can't pick a favorite anymore lol
So glad that you commented on Avi because he is usually left out in this song by reactors but also sad that you left out Mitch. Like you commented on him and Kirstie together but honestly there weren't that many harmonies between them two it was mostly the trio together while Mitch sang the solo and basically looped and autotuned himself in the chorus, was hoping you would appreciate what he did alone with his voice where the original used a computers help
Agreed, most casual reactors freak over Mitch so I was expecting at least that from Uncle J, but I wonder if he thought it was both of them doing that looping effect, their voices are so similar. Regardless this was still a good reaction.
Since you seem to be getting more interested in their solo work, I'm going to recommend a song for each of them: Avi: Change on the Rise Kevin: True Colors Scott: I Should Tell Ya Momma On You Mitch: Graveyard Kirstin: Break a Little Matt: Treasure
Jon I love your reactions especially when doing the original then the PTX version, I've only seen one other reactor do this. I'm disappointed that you didn't give Mitch the love he deserved for this one. Your only comment about him was a grouped comment with Kirstie (which was true by the way). Everyone is fantastic but without Mitch this song would not be possible
@@UncleJon I think that because they have similar voices you might have thought that the looping effect in the chorus was done by both of them when it was actually only Mitch because Kirstie wasn't that prominent in the song as she only did the harmonies with Scott and the three part harmony in the ending while Mitch sang the solo of the whole song by himself
Fabulous reactions! I like Mitch overall, because it's one take, no filters or synthetic gadgets, smooth, pure and simple, a passionate version, Mitch and the group, rocking this song. Perfection. Thank you :)
One of the things that I noticed is that the Kiiara version is very dark in energy. Pentatonix always brings good, bright energy, even their sad songs.
Your “super creepy comment” makes me want to recommend an original of theirs “Light in the Hallway” . There isn’t an official video for it, but there are live recordings from concerts as they do this without microphones. Amazing!
I low key cringe with the original. Not that it's bad per se but the simple fact that her voice is mostly autotune and her chorus is never sung by her but played on a keyboard for every performance because she's can't replicate it. PTX on the other hand just gathers around a couple microphones, never look at each other, and perform this like it's nothing. (Mitch: _hold my crown_). Maybe her electronic version isn't for me and that's okay. I'll just listen to PTX on repeat. 🤣
The original is layered , looped, overlaid to death and Pentatonix sits down and does a throw down. Another song that's been" Pentacized" and smiles abound. Thanks Uncle Jon.
I saw it on another channel I follow and I love it. I'm more of a Voiceplay, voctave and home free along with some other artists. I like pentatonix too.
Not creepy at all! I think that soothing quality to Avi's bass is the reason Scott wanted Avi as lead for the lullaby he wrote for his nephew. Light in the Hallway is one of my top 20 PTX songs because of it. Between it being loved by the fans & the meaning of the lyrics, it was 1 of 2 songs chosen to end Avi's last PTX concert as a "goodbye" to the fans.
Thanks for doing this double play! As so often with PTX, their version is better than the original and in this case was done without the technical manipulation that the original needed. Their talents are out of this world!
No, you're not the only one who is amazed by Avi's drops. Lol! This always mesmerizes me watching this but Avi and Kevin are craaazy good in this...literally real drum and bass. I really cannot wait till you react to both Kevin's and Avi's solo stuff. Avi has a lot of humming stuff in his solo work so you're gonna go crazy with that. Lol!
you should make a triple play reaction of Naughty Boy- La La La ft Sam Smith, Disclosure- Latch ft Sam Smith and then Pentatonix - La la latch (it's a mashup of those 2 songs)
I love how amazing Avi sounds why he just sits there on the couch looking completely chill...... effortless (Avi can sing/hum me to sleep any day 😂) Kevin is always a beast. Meat and potatoes for ever!!! ❤️
Of all the reactors I've seen do this song, you are the only one who has given Avi the credit he deserves, such as you actually noticing and commenting on the drop he does (twice). Some reactors have even commented on everyone but Avi. I don't get it. Try removing his part from this performance and boy, will you notice. In regard to reacting to Avi's solo work, keep in mind that it's not all about the bass (pardon the expression). Not at all. As an opera major in college, he was trained not only as a Basso Profundo, but also to handle higher registers, to have variety in his vocal ability. In his most successful song so far, "Change on the Rise", his lead is basically baritone, but you can hear him sing all of the backing vocals, including bass lines so low you can barely hear them. So thank you, Jon, for acknowledging awesomeness.
Amen!! You tube is horrible right now!! I have resorted to look up ptx reactions everyday bc some are a week or two ago. That was sweet of you to say. I don't think Down needs a double reaction but it is your channel. Your mind will be blown more than any thing you have seen up until now.
Relatable. My dad passed away in 2018 and since that day I have depression & anxiety. Avi's songs, his message in his songs and his voice really helps me everyday too 🙏🏼
What's really interesting about this arrangement is that it's really technically difficult to do. It doesn't sound like it but the vocal chop that Mitch does is not always easy to master, ahd their counting is so amazingly in sync...If you listen to their swells you can even hear that their vibrato is in sync and their swells build at the same rate and intensity. And I have no words for how amazing the beat boxer is... his triplets are just incredible.
This is one of my favorite PTX songs, and I’m so sad they never released it. When, not if, you react to Avi’s solo music, be aware that he is singing ALL the parts, including those incredible low bass rumbles. A good one to start with is Change on the Rise.
Mitch coming in at 6:40 followed by a big huge mouth on your face the way he brought that chorus line in. Sound better than the original version but still with the different notes or levels or whatever you call it but it just flowed coming out of his mouth because his voice is crazy. He's that good.🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
I REALLY appreciate that you took the time to listen to the original before the PTX version. Some reactors don't know the original song at all, so they cannot appreciate that Mitch replicated Kiiara's electronic refrain without effort. Without knowing that, it's like.... yeah well it's a cool song... :/ So.. thank you for doing that! I appreciate your very thorough reactions.
What was always most interesting to me were Avi and Kevin. I have been hearing trios of singers my whole life but this arrangement in a cappella to reproduce the instruments without the instruments. BTW Avi does more of the percussion besides just the bass and has since the beginning.
I like the beat too. I never heard the song or the artist before PTX covered it so this is my only reference to the artist. I have to say she has an average voice that’s technically manipulated & enhanced. She’s cute and whoever wrote & produced it are creative. I love Pentatonix’s cover
When you're listening to the original and all you can think is, "Man, PTX's version is gonna be soooo good." xD I don't always like PTX's version better than the original. I mean, I grew up with and still love Simon and Garfunkel's version of Sound of Silence, and also love PTX's version. In this case though, I like PTX's Gold so much better. I love at the end when Kirstie, Scott and Mitch are alternating words. Kirstie's harmonies towards the end. And Avi and Kevin's drum and bass solo. And oh I dunno, ALL of it! I just about died at the image of Avi at the bedside humming into your ear. xD
I never listened to the original until now. I really, really like it. I definitely can't fault her for not being able to pull of what Mitch can, and PTX absolutely kills it. But, damn... I think I'm gonna put this one in my "likes both equally" box. It's not a very populated box. Lol
Love that you comment on the always amazing Avi 💚 who wouldn't want him to hum you to sleep? If you really want to fall asleep like a baby, listen to Avis Full moon- I promise you won't regret it, it's mesmerizing and completely heavenly 😍
That song soothes me in ways I never knew I could or needed soothing. When I feel anxious it really helps me breathe and calm down. His voice is incredible and that's an understatement.
Great reaction! As for recommendations for listening, well basically everything and anything PTX does. You vcan't go wrong. Only video I'm not partial to is Love Again and that's only because the makeup (Mitch) wasn't doing it for me. Song is great though
Going to say i have never heard the original i am so glad i didn't, so love Pentatonix version so much better I wonder how many of the original sings of OH SH.. that's how it's meant to sound. As for the mic try running a conference and not realising for a full ten mins my mic was not on
Hello there first of all love your reacts!! ... but if you are reacting to pentax and home free , you have to react to voice play to complete the triad hahahaah ❤🤣😍
I totally agree: the beat is great. And Avi's drop is awesome! I'll say that this is one where the PTX version is so much better. Don't get me wrong, she's got a really great voice, and I liked this song when I first heard it, but after hearing the richness added by PTX, the original pales. The original feels too long too. Or maybe it's that PTX's version is too short. Yeah. That.
You gotta wonder how much longer artists are gonna keep letting Pentatonix cover their stuff when the covers almost always end up being SO much better. Mitch so completely crushes Kiiara with the vocals on this one that it's actually embarrassing for her.
Love your critiques ...please react to 'No' a Meghan Trainor cover.... Avi & Kevin sitting up front and showing off their incredible skills...they were having so much fun.....This is a good one to see their brilliant transitions...They were sharing an apartment while Avi was in PTX and they would practice for hours on end honing their amazing skills...
Just realized you still haven't done Avi's Change on the Rise ua-cam.com/video/382BTxLNrow/v-deo.html You need to do this. And keep in mind that Avi does ALL the voices.
@@UncleJon I repeat what @mikegoodwin said: _Avi does ALL the voices._ I promise if it's not a tambourine, a hand clap, or an organ, the sound was produced by Avi. You'll question it when you hear the deep bass in the song, trust me.
Sorry darlin' but you lose points with me for completely failing to comment on Mitch's insanely amazing solo performance here after supposedly comparing it to Kiiara. Good lord man! She had to use computers to get the effect Mitch does with nothing but a superior voice and an almost alienesque ability with vocal control. Shame on you! Not really a comparison with not commenting on that.
@@UncleJon how can you compare Mitch and Kristin in this song when the only time they sang together was at the very end? Not trying to be rude just wondering...maybe because of their tone similarity you thought that they sang together to looping part? Because the whole solo was only Mitch
On the "Roof is fallin'..." refrain, Kiiara needed to use electronic sampling and looping to handle the register change/drop. Mitch does it without even blinking. His ability to flawlessly shift from register to register is uncanny.

Relatable. My dad passed away in 2018 and since that day I have depression & anxiety. Avi's songs, his message in his songs and his voice really helps me everyday too 🙏🏼
That makes my heart happy to hear! How sweet!
You make me laugh everytime omg, love you Uncle! 😂 great reaction! 🙌🏻
I can't wait your nerdy face when you reaction to Kevin solo covers or KOvers
"Down"
"human Nature"
"sign of the times"
"Friends"
Mitch coming in at 6:40 followed by a big huge mouth on your face the way he brought that chorus line in. Sound better than the original version but still with the different notes or levels or whatever you call it but it just flowed coming out of his mouth because his voice is crazy. He's that good.🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
I listen to Avi every night and I think that and a weighted blanket helps 😌
I totally prefer Pentatonix over the original 9 times out of ten, an ths time is no different.
I always think Avi sounds like melting chocolate!
If you want to see him do his thing watch Avi’s solo work he has plenty out there.
I always really liked the original, but then PTX of course blew me away & made their version my favorite.
Yay! You heard Avi!! Mitch and Avi and a Kevin Were this song to me.
What was always most interesting to me were Avi and Kevin. I have been hearing trios of singers my whole life but this arrangement in a cappella to reproduce the instruments without the instruments. BTW Avi does more of the percussion besides just the bass and has since the beginning.
This is a good reaction
Please do Avi's solo stuff!! And don't forget his Avriel and the Sequoias album either!
Just 5 people deciding to sing a song sitting around their living room. It looks just like that.
the beginning of the original sounds like it's a cover by the "Chipmunks" . . . . 'Hey . . . Alvin!"
I like the beat too. I never heard the song or the artist before PTX covered it so this is my only reference to the artist. I have to say she has an average voice that’s technically manipulated & enhanced. She’s cute and whoever wrote & produced it are creative. I love Pentatonix’s cover
Ok.....If you want Avi & to see his vocal range as well as his base, watch Black is the Color of My True Loves Hair by Peter Hollens & Avi Kaplan.
Besides which, this is one of the most lovely songs you’ll ever hear.
Excited to watch you react to Avi Kaplan's original solo work!
Problem by ariande grande and pentatonix please
If you haven't already, I recommend reacting to Avi + Peter Hollens "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair." You get a lot of Avi in that.
I just about died at the image of Avi at the bedside humming into your ear. xD
For the most part I would rather have single reactions, thank you.
Enjoyed
make double play reaction on their "Home" EP
PTX sick talent!!! all add, Kevin Avi frame work supreme K,M,S fill in walls..wall of sound...5people.
I never listened to the original until now. I really, really like it. I definitely can't fault her for not being able to pull of what Mitch can, and PTX absolutely kills it. But, damn... I think I'm gonna put this one in my "likes both equally" box. It's not a very populated box. Lol
You should react to PTX “AHALive in Singapore” 😃
Love that you comment on the always amazing Avi 💚 who wouldn't want him to hum you to sleep? If you really want to fall asleep like a baby, listen to Avis Full moon- I promise you won't regret it, it's mesmerizing and completely heavenly 😍
That song soothes me in ways I never knew I could or needed soothing. When I feel anxious it really helps me breathe and calm down. His voice is incredible and that's an understatement.
@@jelinenanashi9466 ,totally agree with you!!
Avi is the one that can do overtones, (best example is their cover of "Radio Star" )
No I'm one that likes Pentatonix's butter I Love them too!!!
Great reaction! As for recommendations for listening, well basically everything and anything PTX does. You vcan't go wrong. Only video I'm not partial to is Love Again and that's only because the makeup (Mitch) wasn't doing it for me. Song is great though
Gordon Jackson There’s a high quality live version when PTX was on a publicity appearance, it’s awesome.
You should check out Avi's "Change on the rise", Fantastic.
Yeah. That.
You won't be sorry... You'll vindicated!
PTX doesn't do covers... They only do upgrades...!!!
Can anyone say AUTOTUNE Kiiara raises her hand
After hearing it a couple of times, the original is growing on me. But the video is just creepy. PTX is an upgrade.
You gotta wonder how much longer artists are gonna keep letting Pentatonix cover their stuff when the covers almost always end up being SO much better. Mitch so completely crushes Kiiara with the vocals on this one that it's actually embarrassing for her.
He tried so hard to like the original 😂
Love your critiques ...please react to 'No' a Meghan Trainor cover.... Avi & Kevin sitting up front and showing off their incredible skills...they were having so much fun.....This is a good one to see their brilliant transitions...They were sharing an apartment while Avi was in PTX and they would practice for hours on end honing their amazing skills...
If you want a good one by Avi, it would be change on the rise.
Your weird edit matches Kiara's original, which is a collection of weird edits, so you could consider it a stylistic choice.
avi is wonderful , and if avi was humming in my ear sleep would be the last thing on my mind..lol
Just realized you still haven't done Avi's Change on the Rise
ua-cam.com/video/382BTxLNrow/v-deo.html
You need to do this. And keep in mind that Avi does ALL the voices.
I'm planning on reacting to Avi sometime next week.
@@UncleJon I repeat what @mikegoodwin said: _Avi does ALL the voices._ I promise if it's not a tambourine, a hand clap, or an organ, the sound was produced by Avi. You'll question it when you hear the deep bass in the song, trust me.
I have seen most of their covers first. Before hearing the original. So I usually don't like the it. This one is the same way.
I never compared Mitch with Kiiara. I only compared him with Kirstin. However, I did compare their version and the original.
@@UncleJon how can you compare Mitch and Kristin in this song when the only time they sang together was at the very end? Not trying to be rude just wondering...maybe because of their tone similarity you thought that they sang together to looping part? Because the whole solo was only Mitch
Particularly how I heard the whole thing. That’s why I compared both of them together.
The original is kinda annoying with all the repeats, they do have good voices.
NO...

First I think
Yes you are😂
