My favorite part of reactions to this video is watching men stop and lock on to Kirstin when she sings her part without even being aware of it. She's mesmerizing.
Avi and Kevin were doing that "passing back and forth" stuff even back in the Sing-Off. If you watch the start of "Love Lockdown" (which Ben Folds praised as "mean"), you see how Avi starts with a "Shhh" sound of a rising wind and keeps it up through Scott's first two phrases. Then, seamlessly, Kevin starts up the wind sound in time for Avi to start beating his chest in time to his deep "dum"s. Timed just right and very effective.
It's amazing to hear this live and realize how little they actually manipulated the studio version. Mostly they just added a bit of echo to fill it out. Everything else is their voices.
@@RosheenQuynh Even given a flawless performance, an audio engineer had to make choices (with the performers' approval of course) about ambience and equalization. It doesn't go directly from the mics to the CD master without intervention. There's a link about the details further down in the comments.
There are many live concert videos of this song, but there is one "Pentatonix daft punk mix private performance" in which ptx performs for a small private party (thanks to Make a Wish). You hear them live, no mics, performing for a few people, and they sound great, especially on a spur of the moment type situation.
Fun fact: the arrangement has been used by a lot of marching bands! It's was even played by a marching band in Paris when Trump met the French Prime Minister and a Pentaholic recently posted a video of a band playing it in Russia at a street festival! It is really an amazing arrangement.
I didn't know he didn't like it. I could give a comment about Trump here. But I like to keep my Pentaholicism separate from anything negative or ugly. So I won't.
Actually what impressed me is that they had a different video planned and the location fell through. So they and the video company (FifGen) had to scramble to pull this alternative together at the last minute. Shows you that you can go a long way if you are phenomenally creative.
Also, for more superfruit, 'defying gravity', a cover that they did from the musical Wicked, is an absolute must- the contrast between their silly costumes and the pure quality of their singing is great! Mitch just blows you away and you also get to see Scott use his high range beautifully. I would definitely recommend!
Thank you so much for this reaction, been waiting on this one. So glad you picked up on how well Kevin and Avi work so closely together to bring the bass and percussion sounds that we hear in the background and at times take for granted. If a person didn't know already that they were an accopella group and only heard them vs seeing them in action I would think they would think they were using instruments. Their full sound with Avi and Kevin in the background sets them apart and makes you really appreciate their talent and how they rose the bar for accopella groups and made them so popular. Glad you got to see this one. From what I read they spent $400 total and their original location to film the video fell through and they ended up recording in Avi's closet and kitchen, smh. Amazing what a talented editor and great vocalists can do with limited resources.
SO appreciate him noticing that too! Avi and Kevin are a machine all their own and share a passion and knowledge of how to make sounds deeper and fuller than just a few notes strung together. That's one of the things I love about PTX as a whole. They all have that incredible gift! Thanks for the great reaction Jerod!
When my mom heard me playing this medley during my shower, she didn't believe me when I told her it was acapella LOL She truly believes there are instruments in the song, it's kind of hilarious but also sad at the same time.
Pentatonix is usually my first time hearing these more modern day songs. I don't even drive anymore, so don't listen to the radio and have no idea what the original artist's rendition sounded like. I was recenyly really intrigued when I saw a clip of the OA that sings "Feel it Still"! I LOVE that song on PTX Presents: Top Pop, Vol. 1 and I love the choices for who sang what. I was so surprised thst the original song is a male as lead vocalist! Mitch's lead is very well accented by Matt's Bass vocals and the others in the background! I just love the fun, easy - going feeling from that song! z it just makes me feel happy and carefree and I want to dance just for the fun of it. But Daft Punk I had never ever heard anything by them. To me this was a cover of an original song. I know the word medley is hooked on at the end, but it escaped me for a long time LOL! I really love your reactions because you're just a Pleasant and genuine person by Nature, and you give some really good information based on your experience after the videos. So glad you found this whole Pentatonix pentaholic thing and joined us! Have a good one and see you soon!
I always love this song and video. It is so awesome. I think it may be the split screen way they shot this video, but it makes me want to recommend reacting to their Perfume Medley
If you enjoyed this, I would really recommend their original song 'love again'. It's filmed in a similar style to this, sounds amazing, and you might like to hear one of their own songs, as well as the covers! Great reaction!
Really loving your reactions and keen observations. I think you’d like “Say Something.” Kirstie signs lead and Kevin plays cello. Great emotional rendition of that song.
Here is an article about the video and the shoestring budget - strobist.blogspot.com/2013/11/pentatonix-daft-punk-video-low-budget.html There are some behind the scenes pics from the shooting and you can see the black background they made from black bedsheets and even some of the kitchen of the apartment they filmed in.
Great reaction! :) If you go to PTX Vlogs you can travel with them on their US tour when they got excited because there was more than 2 exit signs at a venue! Then go with them to the Europe leg of their tour. Its the PTXperience vlogs. Even if you don't react to them you should watch them to see their evolution on tour. Truly a great experience for a Pentaholic. :)
When you get a chance can you react to Avi Kaplan overtone singing. It's really interesting. On the Sing Off he did it during their 1st and 12th songs, but just him doing The Lion Sleeps Tonight in one of their shows. Enjoy your reactions.
Yes, they recorded it in a closet and filmed the video content at home as well. They used serious mics of course, and a little sound treatment can turn a closet into pretty fair recording space. :) The track *was* professionally mixed, though; it isn't just a cut of the raw tracks. Their mix master talked about their process a bit in a quick interview on Sound On Sound several years ago, www.soundonsound.com/techniques/inside-track-pentatonix
Once again a nice reaction. on the PTX video front i would recommend Can't Hold Us, Save The World/Don't Worry Child, and Radioactive ft Lindsey Sterling.
Great reaction, as always. The clip of them and Ben Bram going up to get the Grammy for the arrangement is fun to watch, and Scott's little speech is sweet. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/AUMH57NS6hg/v-deo.html A few more to possibly react to: PTX Thrift Shop, PTX Royals and Miranda Sings Gives Pentatonix Voice Lessons. The last one is a bit off the wall, but very funny. If you do the Miranda Sings video you might want to see the Superfruit Q&A With Miranda Sings. Both videos also have hilarious blooper videos.
Hi again Jerod! This time loving your reaction to PTX and your unique breakdown of their phenomenal sound. Hoping you will continue reactions to their complete catalog. So glad I subscribed to your channel! Keep up the great work. Look forward to your next upload.
Love your intelligent, knowledgeable reactions. Would love to see you do two reactions back to back (two reaction videos, but close together so you can compare and contrast): 1) the official video for PTX "Aha" followed by 2) the live version filmed on a phone at the Star Vista in Singapore. The first is a fun story video with a weird twist and the second is just WOW. The lead in song really show cases Avi.
Every time I hear this medley I think in the Sing of after the Video kill the radio star, and what he tall Ptx, you came from the future to save acapela and this was their thing, doing electroning songs, and that Avi and kevin are Tecno Dj, I think this is the prove of what Ptx could do that other acapela groups cant
If you like how they interact with each other at the ends of their videos, look up "Pentatonix couch videos" and stick around at the ends for some great interactions. Thank you for your great reactions! Thank you!
AGX here...thanking you for a great reaction. I have a couple of thoughts I want to share, but I'm doing this from my phone which is a colossal pain in the ass. I have subscribed and rung the bell. Keep your eyes open for my next comment. I'm curious to read your thoughts. Until then...AGX out.
Jerod M - AGX chiming in again. You mentioned the vocal effects. I don't know if you have seen them live, but the sound isn't that different live from the studio version. They used minimal outboard gear to create that staccato robotic sound. Basically, they EQ'ed and gated the vocals. My guess is they also narrowed the bandwidth on each channel. All that combined damn near made it sound like they put auto tune on it...freaking crazy.
AGXer by vocal effects, I just mean basic reverb, compression, and as you mentioned very minimal noise gates. Most artists actually don't use autotune, and when they do, you can usually tell. As far as I have seen, PTX hasn't ever used it.

Love the way Kevin manages to keep his head still right til the last few bars.
It's amazing to hear this live and realize how little they actually manipulated the studio version. Mostly they just added a bit of echo to fill it out. Everything else is their voices.
They added echo?!

Guh!! I love Avi so much😭
Loved your reaction haha, so much eye candy with such little resources haha amazing

"Pentatonix made it sound better"
Literally how I feel about every. single. song. they. cover!😋
cheap makeup + shoestring budget + insane imagination = grammy award !
I always love this song and video. It is so awesome. I think it may be the split screen way they shot this video, but it makes me want to recommend reacting to their Perfume Medley
Kevin graduated Yale pre med Scott went to USCLA.... They are so insanely talented . But live on tour is real . Omg
If you enjoyed this, I would really recommend their original song 'love again'. It's filmed in a similar style to this, sounds amazing, and you might like to hear one of their own songs, as well as the covers! Great reaction!
Plus it was before their contract with RCA so it doesn't get a strike :-)
Really loving your reactions and keen observations. I think you’d like “Say Something.” Kirstie signs lead and Kevin plays cello. Great emotional rendition of that song.
You really need to watch them perform live on their tour 2016 and 2017 omg .treat
Watch live perform private please
They went out of their way to prove what Shaun Stockman said on the 'Sing Off'.... "Kevin and Avi, you're just Techo-Acapella DJ's to me."
Jared, now you need to watch Pentatodricks, which is Todrick Hall's parody of this. It's hilarious.
An then SuperFruit's reaction to Pentatodricks.
I was going to suggest the same thing!
...no wait...There's one more pentatonix (save the world/don't you worry child) that he needs to react to before he reacts to petatodricks lol

Great reaction! Would love to see what you think of their 2nd Grammy winning arrangement, "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy " 😊
Great reaction. You should react to their original song Love Again which is a similar style to this :)
