- On the 24th anniversary of the release of the Van Halen album "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge", Sammy takes you back to 1990 and 1991 when it was being written, recorded, and released and what was going on in his personal life, how songs like "Right Now" came together, and the goose bumps shared with producer/engineer Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Cream, Rolling Stones, etc) during recording of the song "Poundcake".
Mr. Hagar. one of the greatest singers of all times.
Lol
@@josephliptak Hahahahah
his lyrics can sometimes be to cheesy.
Super cool human being as well!!
True
#1 Van Halen album on my personal list.
Still LOVE this album. Eddies sound is phenomenal, Michael sounds GREAT and Alex is thunderous. Sammy hit it out of the park! His voice is so powerful on this, He sang his ass off!!!!
Definitely my favorite VH album! Songs like The dream is over! Goosebumps!!
Favourite!
My favorite too...best chorus of any VH tune.
Rocking LP, Poundcake, Judgement Day, Spanked, In and Out, Man on a Mission. Glad to see the tour for this record!
Sammy Hagar is truly gifted that album kicks ass Sammy made Van Halen better than they were Sammy by himself is awesome.
I resisted the first two Van "Hagar" albums because I was still pissed out the the original VH breaking up. The F.U.C.K. album changed all that. Amazing album. Still listen to it regularly.
Love Sammy. Great guy. Straight up no bullshit cat..
Sammy, you are the coolest. I've been a musician all my life. I've done it all music wise, just on a smaller scale than the big boys. I think you have the best rock voice EVER!. You're a great song writer and a great guitar player. You are one of the reasons I wanted to be a musician. You have inspired me on more than one occasion. You were the reason I became a power singer. To hang out with you for a day is on my bucket list. I won't even talk music. I just want to grill some food and have a party.
Love his spirit to this day!
Your an amazing artist, incredibly talented and big hearted , take no shit person.. and you can see you’re respect and loyalty to other!! God Bless you brother...
"THE DREAM IS OVER" is my favourite
Agree100% !
Lol
Highly underrated tune.
DEF!
I absolutely love this album! I remember when it came out. I was in the Air Force Stationed at McGuire AFB, NJ. By buddy was a "Load Master" on a C-141 and was deployed at the time in support for "Desert Storm". We both were awaiting the release of this album, but he wouldn't be able to hear it until he got back from deployment. So, I got to go out and get it first. I was really blown away, just as I was when I first heard 5150 when I was a senior in High School! I was like, "Now this is what Van Halen is suppose to be"! My buddy and I are both musicians and we'd write and record music when ever we had time. Van Halen at that time played a huge role in the "Inspiration" department when it came to writing songs. For me at least. I want to thank you for the inspiration and all the great memories I have when I listen to those Van Halen records/CD's. As weird as it may sound, my life would be different had you not been in Van Halen. Because you have been a divine influence directly and immediately exerted upon my mind and soul. "Inspiration"! Thank You!
"Now this is what Van Halen is suppose to be"!? They're two totally different bands. One is Hard Rock, the other is soft rock/pop rock. You're obviously into the latter. Just because you're not into Hard Rock doesn't mean you should be insinuating that the first generation of Van Halen got it wrong somehow. I personally like both because I like anything from Matchbox 20 to Slayer.
Summer Nights was a great song in 86
Oh man, an awesome song! I listen to that song on the first day of summer for the last 10 yrs.
erich84502ify - Agree--- Perfect summer song. I always blast it on the 1st day of summer every single year!
Dave sales bah Halen 17,000,000,00, 1984, 17,000,000,00 van Halen, ya 11,000,000,00, DAVE wins
One of the best
Summer Nights and Roth’s Just Like Paradise are the ultimate summer songs.
I love 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge'!!!
Everything is perfect on that CD, the vocals, the guitars, the drums, the bass, the overall sound! Perfect! \m/ \m/
A really great album, only to be outdone by Balance!
Thanks Sammy!!!!!!!!
Balance was trash
dvon1097 I would say, just about anything Eddie Van Halen plays on, most surely is NOT trash!
the artist Balance and VH3 were terrible albums imo
VH3 is the most underrated album ever...
And Balance is the best VH album :)
(imo)
Agreed..Balance just takes it a notch further like let's kick grunge in the ass..FUCK are always going to be the most accesible balance great arena rock album..Ever.
Sammy you are the man I have seen VHS 11 times my favorite was with you thank you
Best Van Hagar record and I dare say second best VH record of all time for three main reasons: 1. Awesome Songwriting, 2. Huge mix and production and 3. Great variety of styles in everyone's performances from heavy to groovy to rocking to poppy. Everything was in there. You had Pleasure Dome,Judgement Day,Dream is over,Spanked,In n Out,Man on a mission,Poundcake, Top of the world etc all these AMAZING songs in one package. Bought it on tape when I was 12 and it was the main thing I listened to for years. It was addictive.
Agreed! For me Van Hagar peaked with this album. Came up with a great live concert video as well after that.Awesome time.
You are correct sir. Unfortunately the Roth worshippers will deny this. Dave often couldn't even sing at concert pitch
One of the few albums I always listen to from beginning to end.
Poundcake is a phenomenal song... great opening for an album
One of the greatest albums of all time
The second album I bought when I was first getting into popular music as a kid. This album is in my musical DNA. I was playing drums on a different song last weekend, and unconsciously started playing the beat to "Poundcake"
Love every Van Halen Record ( With Hagar) 5150 was amazing OU812 was also amazing for unlawful carnal knowledge was also amazing the live album was great and balance was amazing also. Sammy you changed the game your so awesome! You have deeply inspired me
One of my if not my top favorite album of all time!
Sammy is the best RED ROCKER EVER ! SEEING YOU TONIGHT SAMMY HELL YES !!
One of the best and most mature album Van Halen ever did. So many great songs on that record.
Got the vinyl - the photo of the whole band recording background vocals on the sleeve is so cool and showcases the team spirit that was still there. "Man on a Mission" is a classic VH song for me.
Sammy you are an amazing musician and singer!! You created some of the best music in Van Halen and can't wait until you guys record together again. It WILL happen! You still have some great music to leave us with. God bless you man!!
Boom Boom named the album. Awesome! !!
By far my most favourite VH album, and up there in my top 10 albums of all time. Such a great album.
I wore that cd out in college. Right Now was the theme song to our baseball team that year. Judgement Day, imo may be one of the best VH songs of all time. I wish you guys would have finished
" I Want Some Action" on 5150
F.U.C.K. In my opinion is a masterpiece. My first two records I ever purchased as a teen in the mid 90’s were Diver Down and 1984. I loved the band instantly. I’d listen to WMMS The Buzzard out of Cleveland, and would have blank tapes ready, and I recorded the Van Halen songs that came on. I then began collecting all of the albums on tape, and the day I popped in F.U.C.K. It sucked me deep into its vortex. To this day, that album is still one of my favorite albums. It never gets old. Thank you Mr. Hagar for your endless talent and the contribution you still give to the music industry. You sir are a true class American! God Bless you very much!
Thanks for sharing Sammy. Love this album.
Awesome once again Sammy you are Rock...
Our favorite Van Halen album with Sammy Hagar! Fantastic tour, the guys really delivered in that concert! #ForUnlawfulCarnalKnowledge
EVH initially inspired my efforts to pursue luthiere, but Sammy's inspiration kept me pushing my efforts harder from the Sam Halen era to beautiful songs off Red Voodoo like "Returning of the Wish". My efforts are starting to pay off because it taught me persistence through love.
The VH FUCK album is amazing!
The EVH drama is unfortunate, but
Sammy is all love.
Life is precious, embrace your God given gifts people.
24 years since the release of my favorite VH album, wow time is passing so fast.
This is the Album that brought me back to Van Halen.
Top Of The World, Right Now and much more!
That was the best time in my life ! All those cities! Hawaii and Cabo ! I can't believe that was 24 years ago... Thank you so very much for the beautiful 12 string custom guitar for my birthday after that incredible experience. I still have the 12 & Tour Shirt. Thank you so much! Charlene Juergens
The Best VH album ever IMHO
Thanks Sammy!! you're the greatest!!!!
Right Now is one of my all time favorites. Beautiful message and rockin' music - love that piano!! Thanks Sammy and VH guys!
Right Now. Great song. Great video. Sammy seems like a genuine nice guy.
Hey Sammy, I've named all my dogs after you and your work.
1st Dog: Hagar, a boxer, a show stopper, where ever I went with Hagar, people would stop to tell me how bad ass he was. Hagar had energy unmatched by any other dog and everybody loved the name. We would walk in a room and everybody would yell "Hagar" like he was Norm from Cheers.
2nd God: boxer, Cabo, the sweetest dog in the world. I've never seen a dog so attached to its owner. Cabo is beyond protective of the house, yet incredible sweet at the same time. The perfect dog and the most athletic dog I've ever seen. She out runs greyhounds and she's a boxer. But Cabo has one droopy eye, so I consider not naming her Forest Whitaker as an opportunity missed.
3rd Dog: Another boxer, Sammy, a complete spaz of a dog, but we love Sammy anyways. Sammy is a beautiful dog, but a bit undersized so he's constantly getting in fights at the dog park. That's when Cabo sticks up for her little brother and makes sure no other dog picks on Sammy. His previous owner was a piece of crap and used Sammy as target practice for his BB gun. We discovered pellets in his legs after we brought him home. Now we shower Sammy with love, however due to surviving being shot, maybe we should have named him 50 Cent.
Sammy, what should I name my next dog?
I freakin love you sammy. Your so inspirational and just awesome.
Good lord, has it been that long???
Loved that album...
Yea you're right Sammy. Those songs written in their entirety in the heat of the moment are always the best. The Beatles did a lot of that. And your "sitting on the beach" scenario reminded me of Don Felder's epiphany when he came up with the Hotel California intro, chord progression & song
I get the “furs all up”every time I listen to this stuff. Some-of the best rock ‘n’ roll of all time. Definitely the best rock ‘n’ roll of this time.
The band was having a good time and it reflected in their music.
Thanks for that!! I learned something new today *smiles*
Sammy, Mike, and the VH brothers need to put all their crap behind them.
Wolfgang needs to go do his own thing.
You don't live forever and those guys were great together, with cancer and everything else out there that people are dying from. Life is way too short.
Wow did not know where F...K came from ~ what history lesson ~ thanks man!
Its not true though. Most Germanic languages have a word that sounds like F**k and has the same or a related meaning. This suggests that the root of those words come from Proto-Germanic. The idea that they came from an English acronym is a nice story but not true. I love the album btw. One of their best
this one and balance i think are the best van halen albums period.
Love, Love, LOVE Sammy!!!
Awesome record! Lots of memories!
That album kicked ass!!!! Sammy, I'm 66 and I saw you in concert with Montrose at the "Baltimore Civic Center" in Baltimore, Md. I was 19 at the time. Probably 1972. I'm a Lead Vocalist and I always used to say "When I grow up I want to be Sammy Hagar"!!!
I also saw you with VH at the "Capital Center" in Largo, Md. You were the greatest vocalist that VH ever had! DLR can't hold a candle to you!!!!! ROCK on "Red Rocker"..........
Hey Sammy , great story!! thank you for sharing your creative process!! It is really inspiring. FUCK is one of my favorite albums ever!!! I can tell you that I listen to it in a daily basis. it has got energy, punch amazing lyrics and singing. And for me it means a lot because this is the tour when I was able to be at a Van Halen concert In Mexico City for the first time since I started listening to the band around 1980. I play guitar and sing too and have been able to play some of the songs on the album I really enjoy those moments.I hope you bring the Circle to Mexico!! Red Rocker!!
such a class act!
Sammy's a great guy...cool stories...could listen to these stories all night...
"For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" , that is one absolute title for a album and Sammy thought me an interesting history lession!! Hands Down...
You the Man Sammy!!!
One of my all time heroes. For almost 50 years!
Sammy... Namaste man.... Nameste. I think you're the top rock 'n roll singer to ever grace the stage. A-n-d.... You seem as nice as Paul McCartney, as far as human beings go. Namaste my friend. (A 62 year old that's been a fan ever since 1978, when you opened for Boston at the Coliseum in Richmond, VA).
What a great guy the real deal that is why he is where he is at because he draws good thing to him he is a very positive person! Good Luck Sammy!
has been a fave album for years \m/
This album defined my teenage years . If anybody asks me what is my favorite rock album , this is hands down my favorite. The dream is over !!!!
Lots of good memories come back when listening to this album ✌️
Great Album from start to finish .(the Dream is over :-) LOVE IT ALL!
Pleasure Dome....late night driving more than once in my life. "Miles and miles from nowhere....". One of my fave albums of all time.
This is by far the heaviest rocking off all Van Halen's albums.
I remember how excited I was when this album hit
I the best👍
DREAMS, EXTRAORDINARY MUSIC!!
BH, MG=Brazil!
Where does this guy get his energy. It’s like he’s been 25 his whole life.
Love my babies PoundCake! OMG!
Pound cake is goosebump city. What a monster song. Eddie was on fire. Such a tremendous riff master he was. So complex in his writing.
I can't listen to Right Now without visualizing the entire music video for it. The two just go hand-in-hand. Iconic visuals for a great track. Thanks for the behind-the-scenes nostalgic trip to one of my fave VH albums. Excuse me now while I go out in the garage and add some red, white and black striping to my Makita power drill.
I just realized that at the very same time Sammy is talking about screaming at 6:48, that same part of the actual song itself comes on that's playing the background. In other words when he screams "waaaaaahhho" you can hear the same scream on the recorded track. I just thought that was kind of funny, I wouldn't even caught that if I hadn't listened to that same part multiple times because of my OCD. Ohh and also when he talks about getting goosebumps from having a particular song hit you like a ton of bricks, that is a concept I can completely relate to, and I've always said the same thing regarding music - especially when it comes to hard rock/heavy metal. In fact I see a lot of myself in Sammy, and I love listening to various interviews of him talking about the good ole days of what it was like to actually be in one of the greatest (if not the greatest) rock n roll bands of all time. Seriously I've got nothing but respect for this man, and it would be an honor to even have the opportunity to sit down and chat for an hour or two, and just shoot the shit. And of course by that I mean me asking him as any questions as I possibly can about life haha...
Anyways Sammy Hagar is the fuckin' man!
I'm a Dave guy, but loved this album.
My absolute favourite VH record of all time
"Right Now" always raises the hairs on my head(fewer now than there was in 1991) and gives me goosebumps. It did the first time I heard it, and it still does today...especially the piano intro...and one of the songs I regard as Sammy Singing in the "sweet spot" of his vocal range...he was/is a great singer, but I feel he sang a lot of songs at the peak of his vocal range, where his best power and sound is just a bit lower....no complaints, though.....love all his stuff.
Incredible artist! An awesome human being!
My favorite of all time. Poundcake is my #1 song
Most people have an album that made a huge difference in their life and this one is mine. I was in and out of the recording studio in Phoenix and teaching math on the side. I had a wife and 1 son and I wasn't getting anywhere. Right now changed all that for me. I realized I was always waiting for things to happen instead of making them happen. Thanks Sammy.
Senior Year !! Class of 91'
It’s one of my favorite Van Halen records!
Great album. Lots of cool deep tracks like Judgement day and In and Out. Excellent studio production as well.
One of my favorites!
Congrats man! Excellent album!!
that DRUM sound is EPIC HUGE...Al is pure groove...he and Mike were simply amazing
Still often listen to that album, loads of really good songs on it.
Gotta buy the book !!!!!!
great album
love it!!!
For some reason this was recommended for me to watch and here's the odd thing; i just listened to this CD today. Good timing youtube. Great album, great band, and a great guy! Next i'm going to listen to Balance.
Love you so much! Happiness!! Yes!!!
pleasure dome and the dream is over are just beautiful
I was only 11-12 when it was released. Probably right around the time when music started influencing me. I probably still have that same CD. Still love hearing *anything* from FUCK. Especially that guitar revving sound! Thanks Sammy 👍🏻
Sweet!
Sammy Hagar seems to be a real genuine person. I enjoy hearing about how they came up with ideas and the stories about it.
Thanks Sammy
my dad had this album when I was in 7th grade and, I would be in awe and wonder about the sound of the guitars on this album. That summer I mowed yards back and forth until I was able to buy a setup. That Autumn afterwards, I was already playing 316,judgement day and most of in~n~out...which is also really fun to play and easy to catch on to.. especially if you bounce back-n-forth from tabs to standard notation.
and Sammy totally owns Roth, no question. Sammy can sing, Dave blows. It's the way things just are. Face it, he's a better singer. imo-i prefer actual talent and pure skill. You can easily tell that Sammy tries to sing in key, on pitch and on point even to this date* Dave still sounds like he's always struggling or he just bullshits
correction, Sammy carries what Roth did in his own way but fucking soars in so many more ways than Roth. I also believe that Sammy has a far better control and further singing range than Roth. (takes a breath)... but vh is still vh, it's all good, vh3 was kinda weird buy hey, shit happens. now what they got going now...why tf is Dave back??(I remember thinking and being a believer that Dave should come back, but man...itza shame yah
sledge Robbins - Dave is all showmanship. He's not a great songwriter and talks more than sings. Sammy sings, plays pretty damn good lead guitar for that matter, and sings in the key with ease, even if he's singing in a lower register because he's 70 these days. Listen to his work with the supergroup: The Circle for proof.
This was the first album to be released after I'd become obsessed with VH. I taped it when it premiered on Westwood One (broadcast from 5150) and bought the cassette the DAY it came out (both tapes have been worn out completely). My first VH show was this tour (Oct 30 1991). Thanks Sam!
Dude! October 30, 1991 at the Worcester Centrum in Worcetster, Mass was my very first Van Halen concert too! Eddie came out playing the drill at the beginning of Poundcake and I lost my mind. This Saturday is the 30 year anniversary, and I will be in Vegas watching Sammy and Mike rock out w/ Jason and Vic as The Circle. And it being the month of the one year anniversary of Eddie's passing (I play guitar because of him) just makes it that much more special.
