I was a guitar tech for a band on the strip back in the day and ran into Eddie Van Halen several times at Guitar Center when he used to take care of a lot of his own gear. Nothing but Cool every time. Never met Sammy Hagar but everyone always said the same thing; Great Guy. My experience was what Sammy mentioned. Outside People, (“a new manager..”), come in and manipulate different band members and cause tension to further their agenda and get their way. I could never understand why someone would want to take a group of people that got along and were successful and making progress and create tension that didn’t exist before they arrived. It was crazy - you know, a band starts out and everyone just wants to play and as you get better and move forward, the “Leeches and Hang-Ons” come out of the sewer and start crap from nothing to get themselves in. The music business is Absolutely Brutal, filled with Back Stabbing, Attention Seeking Loudmouths with Super Egos. As soon as you start gaining some bit of success, here they come, trying to take credit for what others have done before they arrived.
Reminds me of what Paul Prenter did to Queen and Freddie Mercury. Sure, a lot of Bohemian Rhapsody was fictionalized, but Paul was still an asshole and a snake in real life. Sold Freddie out to the media.
That’s just how some people are.
musicians in a band is an ego battle whether you admit it or not. Fame and money ruins it every time
@@shable1436 Exactly. Look at all the biggest rock bands over the decades- going back to the Beatles.
@@shable1436not at all. Or do you mean terrible bands like yours and your friends? Battling egos in a band ruins the music .
If you cant get along with Sammy Hagar there is a problem.
I agree there’s something just not right if you couldn’t get along with Sammy he’s a hell of a guy 😊🎸🎤🥁
He seems cool, but the whole "my band" thing is a red flag.

Kathryn Cherry Snow hell yeah!!
Never been a serious fan of Sammy's music but dammit the guy himself grows on you. He is hilariously entertaining without even trying to be. Down to earth, matter of fact type of guy.
Sammy's music is awesome. One of the greatest rock vocalist in history.
I own every van halen album up until sammy, but i agree he's a down to earth guy...
yah dave' voice fits the old vh better...but when sammy came along they wrote differently...somthing changed after the 84 album...more melloncollie...perfect for sammy
You don’t like sammy’s music ?wtf 😂
He lost most of his fans . He can BARELY go gold on album sales .
Sammy is the sweetest man in the Rock & Roll business. So down to earth & modest. He has a great singing voice & his presence on the stage is GREAT. Wishing him all the best on his career, & his Tequilla Business. I must try Tequilla to toast you Sammy.
Hello Annette
How are you doing?
It's nice meeting you here.
Sammy is a rock star but a regular straight up dude! One of my top fave rock singers! ✌️
It's a shame we can't admit both version were great and leave it all that.
good thang that i dont care anymore
I agree 100%. I never understood the DLR-Van Halen or Van-Hagar deal with fans. Both put out great Rock n Roll.
I'm the same way with Megadeth and Metallica. I started listening to Mega when the Countdown to Extinction album came out. It wasn't until the Crypitc Writings album came out that I learned Mustaine was the original lead guitar and a songwriter in Metallica. Didn't matter to me one bit. Both great bands and I own both of their music. I do like Megadeth's music better but I enjoy both bands.
Gary... I'm with ya man...both made great music and both put on great shows...let the band fucking fight about it...not us fans...
100% mate. Loved both versions of the band. Would love to meet both lead singers but after 5 minutes with DLR you'd have had enough. I reckon I could party with Sammy for a week and not get tired of him. Such a cool, laid back gut. Plus he's a tequila man so that has to be a good thing !
Best words ever.
Who would you rather have a beer with? DLR, of course. Who would you rather have a few beers with? Sammy, of course. Dave would be a riot, but after an hour you'd probably want to punch him just to shut him up. With Sammy you'd still be smiling at the end of the night.
have you ever tried any of sammys rum, holy shit its good
Tequila also but man Tequila is the shyte.
Well dlr has like 3 black belts,so kicking his ass would be quite a challenge,Sammy is lucky Dave doesn't just one day beat on Sammy's ass.
Agreed

yes Sammys style is class, Dave's style is douche.
Sammy is one of the nicest rock musicians out there. Cool interview.
Sammy Hagar, my favorite rock singer of all time!!

Great interview-Sammy called it like it was-I was a big fan of both versions of VH but honestly after Sammy left, the VH brothers couldn't get their shit together as Sammy noted at 1:52 - Dave was a cool entertainer and clown, but Sammy was a great musician!
And what music did Hagar write again?
@@Rich-kp1eu He actually commited more than just vocals. Guitar. I think thats what he meant.
Dude, you are just hung up on hagar,he was there as a singer at first but then started to whine after the 2nd and 3rd record and still today whines,it was vh which brought him.up.to.heights that he would have never reached with all his camp bands, still today, him.and his cover band are still whining !

bellmeisterful bro agree, Hagar hits those notes like a boss
Sammy Hagar was successful before he joined VH
Great rum too.
Sammy sucks
and ironically , the least enjoyable on the ears
Sammy is right about one thing, Van Halen hasn't done anything on their own. Without someone calling the shots for them they just don't have anything going for themselves. Really, all you have to do is look at their body of work and you'll see when they were doing things they either had DLR or Hagar, then there was that one guy which didn't work out at all.
Yup, the reality of their catalog speaks to that. Dave and Sam were the musical directors as well as guiding many other aspects. Lightning struck twice for the VH bros.
Sammy brought in good lyrics and better song writing, something roth sucked at..
-
Ken Parnell that’s probably why Cherone didn’t work was because he wasn’t a leader like Dave and Same and more of like a wide eyed fan waiting for them to call the shots
Eddie wanted to quit and go home on the first Van Halen tour. He never wanted to be a rock star like Roth. He was more comfortable sitting at home playing his guitar by himself. This is in Noel Monk's book who was the band's manager in the glory days. Probably why Eddie is content to mostly stay at home and do his own thing these days.
@@mtnnoel63 nah
Nice to see Sammy's still doing it. I never saw Van Halen perform but I did catch Sammy in NYC way back in the day with Ronnie Montrose on the tour for the "Montrose" album. They rocked out "Bad motor scooter" and "Rock candy" and sounded fantastic. Those were the days. Best to all.

Sammy has aged really well for being 70+ . He looks like 50! He also took really care of his voice. Not so much Dave and I am huge Roth fan.
Probably around 66 in this interview.
I seriously love hearing both Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth speak. Charisma powerhouses. Great front men for such a legendary band.
My friend's dad was buddies with Jeff Keith of Tesla. I'll never forget when Jeff gave my buddy and I a bunch of backstage passes to use to go out and collect girls at the concert. That was the greatest experience ever at a rock concert and yes, like Sammy said. They did offers services to get a backstage pass.
I fuck with Florentine. He's not always the most vocal on the show, or dropping the zingers, but he's a good dude.
+Daniel Hooper Agreed Florentine's a cool ass dude.
Van Halen is an All Time Great Band. You can be a fan of both versions, Dave's VH and Sammy's VH. I like a lot of songs from Sammy's version
of VH, but if I want to blast the radio, dance and jump around, rock my head back and forth, and feel the music, I'm playing The Original Van Halen with DLR. I prefer The Original stuff by far over Sammy's. It's all in what you like, and I like more energy, more edge, and heavier cords that The Original guys put out.
I like them both equally well!! They both are extremely talented and rock the stage!!
Sammy, Brother! That was big of you, to say early Van Halen rocked, and you were as big a fan as anybody!
By every measure that counts, Sammy is the better musician. The vocal range, the delivery, his writing, guitar playing, stage presence. DLR could strut and jump, but in the end he was the limiting factor on VH and they all knew it. Sammy was the natural evolution from clubs, amphitheaters, and smaller arenas to stadium multiplatinum megastars. VH would never have reached the heights they did without Sammy.
Uummmmmmm......Yeah, they played the Mega Arenas with Dave, lol.
@@orvil9223 They played those mostly in the 07-15 reunion, after Sammy's era of getting them there. They did play the US fest but that was an outlier, and then 1984 tour somewhat (which doesn't even have any real pro footage!). But it was significantly bigger with Sammy. They never had a #1 either until Sam and all 4 of his albums were #1s.
Not that I'm saying selling tons of records and playing the biggest venues is at all a direct indicator of your quality as a musician -- look at today. But at the time I think it did more.
Instead of hating Sammy for making a ton of money in tequila among other things, the VH brothers (Eddie) should have realized this dude knows how to be successful in business and a band is just that...a business. Sammy actually has his sh@* together. They shouldn't have cared that he was "running the band" somebody had to do it. Then again, who cares anymore, Dave and Sammy cranked out a bunch of great stuff. Too bad they went crawling back to DLR. Talk about not moving forward. They will never recapture the early days. They (VH) need to retire or move on to something new. I would think someone like Eddie who was always pushing the envelope would still be doing that. Eddie still plays great but, I think they are just embarrassing themselves now.
Been watching your channel for years!! And to respond to your comment, I agree, I think VH should drop the entire old band thing and just move on to new projects. EVH is still an incredible musician and always innovating something, he should start an entirely new project that doesn't have traces of the old VH members (besides his bro, since they are glued to each other)
@Bruce S Yeah, he should have done an instrumental album for sure!
they started embarrassing themselves the moment DLR quit the band. the early stuff was their best, really peaking with Women and children first and Fair Warning. everything after those two LPs was just blah
@@bconni2 good thing your not god cause even then I’d call you an idiot for saying that

There is one reason and one reason only why I listen to Van Halen: Eddie. Nobody else mattered to me, Dave, Sammy, Mike, etc. Sammy's playing and singing definitely would not draw me to that band.
Sammy Hagar withstood the test of time! Simply an all around nice guy and a true rocker! Where are the Van Halen Brothers... HISTORY!!!

LOL Sammy "I can't drive 55" hagar will never be as good for Van Halen as David Lee Roth was. EVER.
CelestialWoodway They’re not.
Its true, Dave and Sam actually made the songs. They created the melodies and arranged the music. Eddie came up with riffs and bits of songs. It was Dave and Sam who made them into songs. Evidence? Van Halen III. More evidence...nothing created since.

@@bconni2 Sammy can still sing, Dave can’t !
Oh man! Great stories.
I like both versions of VH. I always have trouble saying which was better.
I will say this though, when I saw VH with Sammy, they played the older songs (the songs with Dave). I went to see them with Dave and well, DLR won't (and probably can't) do the Sammy songs. I'm not sure if even a young Dave could but a couple.
Yes, with Sammy, they changed a couple of the songs so Sammy could sing them, but you still recognized the songs, but why wouldn't they do that with DLR.
Sammy not only appears to be much more down to earth, but he is clearly much more of a professional. I've never seen a bad Sammy show, with or without the brothers.
Alex and Eddie killed Van Halen. The Band was run by David and Sammy and it was successful, the band died when Eddie and Alex took over.
'fraid you're right. also EVH 'needed' to be paranoid about coups that didn't exist. if i had 10 bucks for every story where eddie says he presented innovative material and the band reacted (even in Roth days) by supposedly saying: "this isn't our style," but brave EVH insisted they put it on vinyl...if i had ten bucks for each such anecdote i'd have at least 200 bucks.
@@Allan-et5ig He was a inwardly tortured soul
the band died when DLR quit . as much as i like Sammy as a person, the sound he brought to VH was just too happy, polished and over produced.
@@bconni2 In your opinion, the band died when DLR quit, but in reality that is very far from the truth. With Sammy they sold out areas worldwide. If you didn't like Sammy that is your right, but Van Halen made amazing music with him. Eddie made amazing music with DLR and with Sammy.
@@ravenstrange8466 everyone is entitled to their opinions. and it's mine that their best work was the Fair Warning LP. i'd hold that album up against anything they ever did with Sammy.
Sammy can be summed up very quickly, and this is by his own words. When any band or business venture he was involved in was doing well, it's because of Sammy. When they didn't do well, that would be the other guys' fault. Always. Just read his book. :D The Red Rocker.
Look at his track record , maybe he's right.
@@mikaelhaggard8031 ...maybe? Yeah, he IS right.
I remember really liking "Van Halen" with David Lee Roth > "Jump", "Panama", etc.... When he left Van Halen, I didn't understand why & 'kinda' liked some of his solo songs... Then Van Halen got Sammy Hagar & to me it wasn't that great in the beginning... Then as time progressed, Van Halen really got good with Sammy Hagar & I really enjoyed it. Then Hager left & I stopped following them. They got Gary Cherone as lead singer & I don't even know 1 of their songs... Then Roth returned & I didn't follow that either. It's sad to find out that Mr. Eddie Van Halen passed away. When I found out, I could truly see I haven't been keeping up on Van Halen.

Sammy never says shit about Eddies accomplishments and innovations on the guitar! In his book he just says eds a great musician, never mind he reinvented the instrument and gave Hagar a career, without Van halen he'd be playing I can't drive 55 at county fairs,
Finger tapping was around WAY before Eddie. There’s even a video on UA-cam of an Italian guitar player doing it on tv back in the 60s.
I do agree that Sammy’s career probably would’ve fizzled out by the end of the 80s. Van Halen kept him famous, but then again, what would Van Halen have done but hired a Dave clone?
Given Van Halen’s momentum after Roth’s departure, they could have went platinum with an unknown singer plus there more to Eddie Van Halen than tapping and no one took it to the level he took it,
@@littlekingtrashmouth9219 No disrespect to Vittorio Camardese, but how many people went out and bought a guitar or started tapping when he played? EVH took tapping to an unforeseen level and to the mainstream consciousness of the country and eventually, many parts of the world.
