- I didn’t even know Curly Redwood existed until my wife saw it on the shelf at Hearne Hardwoods. This was a pleasure to turn, sand and finish. My wife has already claimed it as her own but the second blank will find its way to our Etsy shop when it’s finished turned.
Please check out Hearne Hardwoods located in Oxford Pa, well worth a visit even if it’s just to look around.

Nice job.
Thanks
Very lovely bowl...the wood just glows!
Carol Riley thank you!
I never heard of Curly Redwood, either. Beautifully done!!! If I was your Wife, I would have claimed it, too!!!
Thanks Annette! She had seen several boards that were absolutely gorgeous but would not have been good for turning. When she found this one she laid claim to the first completed piece! Weeks before I even turned it! We are going to return and pick up one of the other boards as I have an idea to make them work in a Turning!
@@KennettBTurned , that is awesome, looking forward to seeing another Turning!!
Nicely done' I love winged bowls and that grain, wow!!!!
Ken
Moonpie Creations thank you! I’ve done a couple but this was the first square one!
Awesome bowl, your wife has a great eye, thanks for sharing Kennett.
Thanks Gary! Sometimes too good of an eye! She saw so much cool stuff at Hearne’s, but I said if we can’t carry it we aren’t buying it! But we came out with some really cool pieces! Thanks for watching!
Kennett the wood grain that you are working with now is fantastic what an awesome and stunning bowl.
Kobie thanks. I hope I can continue to get lucky with the project I do!
Another good looking piece, Mert. Really nice grain pattern. Looking forward to seeing those other projects.
William, as always, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I’m actually headed out today to mount one of them up to the lathe and see what happens!
I love hearne hardwoods it is an amazig place. I love how they just let you wander around the property. Last time I was there mr hearne was heading to Nicaragua for 1 three love his attention to detail on exotic woods
Thanks for watching Mr. Woodworker! This was my first trip since I’ve been down here and I very much enjoyed seeing the vast selection of native and exotic hardwood! It is certainly a woodworkers paradise! Once we work through our purchase we will likely be headed back down. I’m starting to run out of Purple Heart and had my eye on some really nice pieces while down... but we had the car 🤣
@@KennettBTurned I agree it is paradise they have amazing walnut and I picked up a chen chen small slab when I w left s down there for end table.
Beautiful piece of wood which you brought the best out of. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Huw!
Absolutely beautiful thanks for the video
Dusty corners Calgary thanks for watching! As long as people watch I will continue to put videos out!
Perfect 👌
Thank you!
Nice bowl Mert, the beatle running up the scale on your table saw was laughing at you while you were trying to get the waste block off. LOL
Thanks Doug! I didn’t notice that thing until you mentioned it! There was another on the floor. After the troubles getting that block off, I won’t be questioning the hot glue block for a while! 😂
Beautiful
Nice looking bowl. Glad your wife got to keep this one! I'm from PA (other side of the state from where the place is you toured) and I can't wait to see the other goodies you picked up.
Thanks Joyce! She is gathering a collection of some of the cooler pieces. I can’t wait to get the other pieces on the lathe either... but time isn’t on my side. I need an eighth day every week! We are probably 30 min east of Hearne’s, which is really cool.... but I think might prove to be a curse too 🤑.
“Don’t have the skill for bits” don’t sell your self short matt you’re plenty skilled 👍 great looking piece 👌
Thanks for your kind words. Skill and daring to take a $2000 piece of wood on are different I guess! Definitely scared to go after some of the larger projects... at least until I get a bigger shop!
You have a nice voice. But it sounded like you were reading Relax. But then again with gun shots going out. I could not relax myself. Lol. Good job
Vicki Bonness thank you! I was reading 🙃. After 8-10 tries and what would make some really good blooper reel clips and my wife laughing hysterically she recommended I write it down! And when I read... it’s one speed and tone... until I step on my tongue 🤪. Gun shots? Thanks againVicki!
@@KennettBTurned lol I was thinking the same thing 🤣. It sounds like gunshots then you something about "across the street". I thought damn dude is woodturning in the hood! 🤣
K9 Mike finally watching it again I figured out what the “gun shots” were! I turned this right around the 4th of July. Here in PA fireworks were just legalized a few years ago and we have a neighbor that buys the biggest allowed and sets them off in his yard. I believe what is said was “there’s the idiot across the street”! Last year he was firing them directly over several houses including mine. Raining hot embers on our several roofs.
@@KennettBTurned wow, and I think I saw you have a tree service. So i imagine you have lots of fuel (limbs and logs) around your place as well. Brilliance from your neighbors! 😠😠Not!
Ok. That’s better then gun shots. They shot fire works around here also
Gorgeous piece!
And I don't think I will ever again say that I think a glue block isn't secure enough to hold anything of significant size. That hold was impressive!
I'll also say I winced every time you moved the tool rest out towards the wings without stopping the lathe first. 😖
Thanks Rebecca! Though I moved the tool rest very cautiously it is a bad habit. My impatience gets the best of me! But I also deal with spinning stuff all the time too. I will say I was VERY focused on keeping my fingers on my side of the rest at all times!
I've never done anything like this. Do you think it would feel "out of balance" if I used a triangular piece?
Dan Stark thanks for watching! Absolutely not. With as light as this wood is it should be out of balance too bad. I turned a heart for Valentine’s Day last year and had no problems with balance at all!
I was thinking of a heart shape, lol.
Dan Stark you can check out my Facebook page from back in February to see what I did!
God
It turned out really nice! Oh no... I see you got quite a bit of pore sealer or polish on your precious lathe. {So did I very recently.} I try to put a cloth on the rails when I am doing that stuff, maybe a good idea? But good job though!
Chris thanks for watching! Actually that large stain isn’t sanding sealer as I do much the same as you with a piece of flooring on the rails. That is actually the sap from a couple Beech wood bowls I did a few weeks ago. I cut the tree in the morning and turned it in the afternoon... and took a shower doing so. I need to wipe it off! Maybe this week. Thanks!
@@KennettBTurned That is a much safer idea than mine I would have to say. I am also fortunate to have a few old pieces of flooring on hand as well. So I am switching over to your idea. Well Played Kennett.
Chris Thomas Turning to me is about learning and sharing information! I hope that my videos inspire people to create but also ask questions. Many times I can share information or the question makes me rethink what I am doing. Thanks for watching!
You left out the part I was most interested in seeing when you left out the sculpting of the corners. :'(
Kindiah I’m so sorry! 😢. This is what happens when I get distracted. I got pulled away from the project and when I got back to it I had forgotten I had been videoing it. I made a last minute design change. Checked my phone and had a slap thee forehead moment. I apologize for missing it. Thanks for watching the shortened version. 😉
Kennett B Turned I look forward to more great projects. We're all human and make mistakes and I appreciate you sharing your talent with us.
Nice! I like it!
Thanks Jen ! As usual I wasn’t sure about it until I got the finish on it!
