  • @apkungen89

    Would have been nice to see a test at 90 without HVAC too. I don't think consumption would have been that much higher than 151 then. And the 110 test was maybe high because the cabin got cold when the HVAC was off during the test just before.

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  4 роки тому +2

      Are you sure about that? If we assume 158 Wh/km at 90 km/h with HVAC off, that's 50 Wh/km lower than with HVAC on.
      Average speed for the run was 70 km/h. Average power for HVAC would have been:
      70 km/h * 50 Wh/km = 3.5 kW
      There's no way in hell that HVAC would pull that much power during Norwegian spring. It's more likely to be 1 kW which equals to about 15 Wh/km.

    • @apkungen89
      @apkungen89 4 роки тому +1

      @@bjornnyland 50 wh/km lower is when going from normal mode on drivetrain and HVAC to completely switching off HVAC and turning on range mode? Don't you think that's a reasonable number? You're probably right that it's not that much. The HVAC went down 10 wh/km from normal to eco. The 15 wh/km you're talking about is maybe when going from eco to turned off. So 90 km/h and HVAC off would then have been 175 wh/km. 151 at 60 to 175 at 90 is that really that much? An increase of 16 percent.
      I think HVAC off and 60 km/h in my model 3 sr+ would have been around 95 wh/km and 90 km/h and hvac off would probably have been around 120 wh/km. 26 percent increase.

    Range mode speed can actually go higher than that if you set it in the PCN. The actual advantage over Model 3 is > 135-150 and fast charging. Taycan still holds US Cannonball record.

  • @apkungen89
    @apkungen89 4 роки тому +2

    My model 3 sr+ would have been below 10 kWh/100km if I drove at 60 km/h and HVAC off. I don't think the Taycan seems that thirsty at high speed. About the same as an e-niro at 120 km/h. E-niro is boxier but lighter and smaller wheels.

    The taycan is a great car but there’s one thing that seems quite annoying, the refresh rate of the digital speedometer. If you look at it closely when accelerating hard you can see it skips many numbers. That’s something i don’t like about many cars that have a digital speedometer. With Teslas the speedometer refresh at a way higher rate and that’s just so much nicer.

    so one thing I don't understand: what was that about locking the rear gear ratio at 14:1 if the Taycan is only using the front motor? At what point does the rear motor kick in? This is important because it will affect the handling of the car. I'd like to know more about the understeer/oversteer characteristics due to switching power between the different motors. I realize such a test is outside the remit of this series with someone else's car.

    • @DG-uv3zw

      So at the back it has gearbox with clutch!? and 2 speeds! So, in launch mode it goes 1st gear to around 100kmh(can be slight less or higher) and then engages 2nd gear! In range mode, it doesn`t use 1st gear and no rear motor power when cruising! In sport+, etc and on track, it will mainly use 2nd gear and of course both motors...
      It basically gives Porsche advantage on the track! Mostly at high speeds(160kmh+) where is much more agile then Tesla for instance...Even tho, top speed is the same as Tesla with 1 gear...
      Just to add - because of the nature of electric motors and extremely high torque and response, the managment of both axles on track is superior to ICE! It can instantly adapt to requirements.(torque vectoring) Thats why tri motor setup could be incredible to implement!(currently Tesla is soon to release 3 motor setup but many others will also...). 4 motors could be maybe even more crazy but thats much more expensive to build...(and complicated to mass produce)

    • @bjornnyland

      @@DG-uv3zw I understand about the gearbox thanks, but in range mode Bjørn showed the car driving only using the front motor. Virtually noone in the real world is going to take their Taycan to the track so there has to be more to the rear motor than just fast launches which get boring after you've done a few. I'm assuming it cuts back in at higher velocities, on the Autobahn for instance. I expect Porsche have figured this out at the Nürburgring and on the Autobahn. Still, it's something I want to know more about, and haven't yet seen any description: other reviewers seem a bit too enamored of the launch mode.

    At current temperatures (15°C and sunny) I can achieve the rated range Tesla displays for my Model 3 Performance, wich is 495km (and corrosponds to 153Wh/km) if I drive 105km/h (HVAC on, without truck trailing etc.). That's 75% faster than the Taycan. That's worse than I thought, especially since this is the Base Taycan, which is slower than my car and the Performance Model being the glutton in the Model 3 range.
    I gladly will forfeit marginally better handling and better acceleration above 180km/h in favor of way better efficiency and monthly software updates. M3P accelerates plenty fast to 260km/h if you want to do that on the few occaisions you even have the opportunity to. If it really buggs me at some point I'll invest in an upgraded suspension (2.500€ for better handling), lighter wheels (2.000€ for faster acceleration and better handling) and better brakes (2.000€ for track use) and maybe a couple minor nicknacks like sway bars and adjustable camber arms (for better handling), which should make the car almost perfect (Basically a softcore version of Daeriks Track Model 3) and equal or better to the Taycan even on the track.
    My opinion: Taycan is a car for VERY rich people to have fun with at the track. Porsches are fun to drive, though there are a lot of cars that have a way better price to fun ratio. Like getting 95% of the fun for about halve the price (M3P or Lotus Elise), or 80-90% of fun for about a quater of the price (Megane Sport, Honda Civic Type R or Mazda Miata - Sadly there are no real electric hot hatches so far. There's nothing more illogical in saying 15.1kWh/100km than there is in saying 90km/h. Following the same logic, "90km/h" is like saying [ninety thousand meters per three thousand six hundred seconds ] - it sounds even more awful, but we use km/h nevertheless and we're not saying "the optimal trip speed would be 25m/s". It's all about which option is closer to something meaningful in people's lives and which numbers are easier to work with. How much energy you need for 100km is a lot more meaningful than how much energy you need for one km. Of course, how meaningful something is, is a matter of personal preference, so what works for most, might not work for you or me, which is why cars have always allowed to change the way the energy consumption is displayed.
      Besides personal preferences, however, it's far easier for people new to EVs to grasp the idea if we use familiar units.The common folk is used to kWh from his energy bill and to the idea of "consumption per 100km" from his old ICE car. If he hears 151Wh/km, it's difficult to imagine what it means. But if you tell him 15kWh/100km, he will instantly know how much that costs and how much better an EV is from a fuel cost perspective vs. the ICE.
