  • Jonny has already experienced the Porsche Taycan launch control ability (0-62 in 2.8 for the Turbo S using over-boost function) in a previous world exclusive Fully Charged episode, but this film is the first road drive of the finished car. A chance to experience the 270kW rapid charging capability, we drove the 2020 Taycan Turbo (not really a turbo, but more a performance level name - 0-62mph in 3.2) from Gothenburg Sweden to Copenhagen Denmark as part of the international launch of the model. Porsche held an 18-day road trip launch event where 18 cars were driven in stints 6,440km across 9 different countries.
    The 280-mile/450km range, 800v, 100kWh (93.4 of which is useable), up to 680PS (500kW) 850nm twin motor rear-steer Turbo price starts at £115,000, but there will be cheaper versions of Porsche’s first EV coming within the next six months. In stock form both Taycan Turbo and the £138,000 Turbo S feature 625PS (460kw) of power, but it is in over-boost mode for those infamous relentless launch control drag races where the power differences are unlocked. Turbo S gets 761PS (560kW) compared to the 680PS (500kW) Turbo.
    It may not have the range of a Tesla Model S P100D (the so-called Plaid does not yet exist as a production vehicle), or the 0-60 on paper, or the seating capacity (Taycan is a 4 seat or optional 5) but the Porsche chassis promises better road holding and stopping performance. The Taycan can also charge up to 270kw, which translates to 5-80 percent charge in 22 minutes. Or 62 miles (100km) of driving in 5 mins. And then there’s the build quality that a legacy car manufacturer brings to the table.

      The thing that intrigues me is that they are all using some variation of the sound you get with an electric train motor. This makes sense as it is a sound most people will have heard and would associate with electric traction. The new electric London Black Cab makes a sort of whirring noise a bit like the sound straight cut gears make as in old gearboxes. I remember back in the 70s, Lucas were experimenting with electric drive and had a couple of single deck London buses. At one point they were trying out various sounds and one was horses hooves! It cause more trouble because people didn't look for a bus but for a horse wagon!

Actual problem without interior parking, unfreezing the car and particularly windows to get in is absolutely terrible (more than 50 mins preheating at -20C). Tesla, wants to charge other manufacturers for access. Why would they subsidize Tesla's network when they could use the open standard. Which leads to the second reason. Proprietary interfaces almost always lose to open source ones. Anyone can build a CCS network and dozens of companies are.

That will probably further help differentiate your product vs others and be a major help in reducing accidents. Right now, I still see many people not liking those touch screen buttons, no matter how futuristic they feel. Just coz it's an electric car, doesn't mean you have to cover it with screens to make it competitive. This is what we need to see. Real journeys, time to find all the faults and all the pro's. A real treat to behold. While I'm still in favour of a Tesla, the Porsche Taycan really is a compelling car if you've got the lolly and in need of a sports car. Sadly I think you'll only get the benefit on the German Autobahn as you'll be lucky to break the 40mph speed on the UK motorways. For UK you need self drive so you can sleep during the boring bumper to bumper journey, and a bioweapons grade hepper filter to clean the air while your in ICE hell.

      @Miata822 5 років тому +2

      We can hope. Ionity chargers are funded by a consortium of European auto makers. They are only installing these charging stations in Europe, no plans for the US. Electrify America chargers in the US and Canada are funded by VW as part of the settlement of the "Dieselgate" scandal and the lawsuits VW faced. We need US manufacturers to fund a similar effort here but unfortunately things are moving the other way.
      With the current administration rolling back future CAFE standards for fuel economy and now working to end the ability of California and other states to set emissions and mileage standards American manufacturers have reduced financial incentive to even make electric cars at all. We have seen a cancellation of Volt and Malibu hybrid with no new EVs officially announced since the promise of a number of new EVs some years ago. Ford has a stale electric compliance car. Both Ford and GM have announced plans for electric pickups and Ford has been talking about a sporty electric SUV so there is some movement, but nothing like the sales that and variety of cars coming to market in Europe. The cute new electric VW and Honda won't even be available in this country. Smart's EV and the Fiat 500e are going away.
      I know it can be uncomfortable to talk politics here but it is really important that we make our voices heard on this subject. Politicians of all parties need to be made aware that it is in their best interest to support the development of EV charging in this country, if for no other reason than that slow EV sales in the US will lead to US manufacturers continuing to fall further behind foreign manufacturers in the global market.

Performance wise this is obviously a "Driver's Car" and to add Autonomous Driving Capability in the future would be a disservice truly worthy of the name "Ludicrous Mode". Some people actually enjoy driving rather than just thumbing through text messages and Facebook on their smartphones. Perhaps Tesla can write software for a new Model 3 Video game entitled "Taycan Adventure" for owners to play with while parked.

    The thing that gets me about reviews of the Taycan is when some (not all) Tesla fanboys come out and say "Oh, so you pay 100k more for this than a Model S..." or " That's too expensive for the range..." or "You could have gotten a Model 3 for..." and blah-blah-blah. Kinda implies they're more interested in validating Tesla as the Be-All-End-All, rather than moving the automobile to a sustainable future. So what if it costs more? Last time I checked, Porsche has never has a problem selling a car. And if you believe the pricing argument is the final straw, no one would ever buy a Ferrari because you could get a C8 Corvette for MUCH less. And yet, somehow, Ferrari still manages to sell cars with exorbitant price tags.
    If you like Tesla and you are satisfied with their offerings (which I will say are quite well), then that's what you buy. Cars are a subjective emotional purchase for those who can afford to spend this much money. You're not going to go to a guy who just bought an 812 Superfast and convince him he should have just bought a Mustang GT500 because he's going to look at you like you lost your damned mind. And honestly, he'd probably be right. The Taycan is an amazing car not because its an electric car. It is an amazing car because it is an electric Porsche. And to some, that's all the justification they need...

    Wow, this is way nicer than a Tesla. Looks good, no panel gaps, no paint defects... Finally a real ev I'd want from a company that knows how to build cars properly.
