#mazda #mazdacx90 #review
Nice to see a company who isn't cutting cost and making things cheaper. Mazda is a car for people who appreciate quality, fine materials and attention to detail. Nothing was rushed, or looking to make compromises. No hurry up and get it out to make delivery numbers.
Kase, you absolutely hit it outta the park with this video. I love your style, and you have truly come into your own at TFL and being in front of the camera.
I’m glad they increased the available towing capacity to 5k from 3.5k that the CX-9 offered.
Made and designed in Japan, doesn't get better then that!
The Mazda CX-90 is very special, a affordable family crossover SUV made for the driving enthusiasts! A new modern powerful Made in Japan JDM inline-6 turbocharge engine it's been 20 years ago since Japan made their last inline-6 engine the legendary 2JZ and RB. A new rear wheel drive Midship platform places the engine farther back in the chassis for enhanced handling with independent double wishbone suspension geometry. Thank you Mazda for all you do. You will make driving fun again for all of us that needs a family crossover SUV to go do some grocery shopping at Costco or a family road trip
Now that you mention it, it is kind of a big deal for enthusiasts since it’s really the first Japanese-made inline 6 in two decades basically. A secret enthusiast car. The fact it’s a mild hybrid really helps with the MPG at 24 city and 28 highway to keep up with new 4 cylinder SUVs, and that’s with AWD standard. It starts at $40k USD too. I just pray it doesn’t get markups which from my knowledge Mazda usually doesn’t do. But you never know what hype can do.
I just really hope this car doesn’t get overhyped and disappoint drive-wise when I eventually test drive one.
my 1979 rotary Mazda RX-7 is still going strong.
Never thought id say this about a Mazda, but thats a handsome car.
I said the same thing a while back…. Now I own one 😂
You missed out a lot than , over the years Mazda had lot to offer
This has been the case for 5+ years. Really punching above their weight class
@@andrewsbbq Even since Mazda 3 , Mazda 6 or CX-9 came out in 2008 ...these cars where much nicer and better designs than Camcords of this world not to mention cheesy Koreans with ton of QC issues and poor build quality .
@@kdomster9141 very true. The design was a bit bubbly and cartoonish back then, but still better than the competition. The design from about 2018 forward is mature and premium
I love my wife's 2015 Mazda CX-5, they just make high quality cars, materials, comfort, in a tight, affordable package, maybe not affordable anymore with new car pricing, but I love Mazda! Kudos!
I also have a CX-5 and love it. But The CX-60/70/80/90 is completely new....everything! Unless Mazda has done something that no other manufacturer has done, there will be bugs to work out the first few years
@@clarkkent9080 I know they're new, but didn't mention anything about "bugs to work out", talking more on car pricing.
@@gqami I was just pointing out that everything about these are completely new and not used anywhere else except for the 2.5 l in the PHEV. Concerning pricing, the CX-70 to come out this fall is not much larger (interior) than the CX-5 which is priced very well (except for dealer add ons) and have a long track record of dependable quality build.
@@clarkkent9080 Agree to disagree. Manufacturing doesn't work like that, everything completely new.
@@gqami There is nothing on a CX-90 that is not completely from the ground up new except the 2.5 liter engine in the PHEV.
I believe the CX-60 has already had recalls for driveline, wheel, 12v battery, shock absorbers, and sway bars problems. I left out all the software problems since that is an easy fix.
Wow impressive new SUV. Excellent review Kase. Well done .
I have to say given a choice of turbo v6 or Turbo I6, I do prefer an I6, as you said very smooth liner power.
I really think this thing will be best in class. Good power trains, wonderful interior space and great overall design.
I like the way he slightly pauses between each word
Good content, Chase and working through all the information that was available to you
I test drove one and loved it however doesn’t fit my family’s more active lifestyle it’s very lux drives smooth fast didn’t like how tiny the glove box is and it’s easy to smack your knee on the vent sticking out when entering front seats. It’s really in a bad spot. Good overall
Nice review of what looks like a beautiful, practical and desirable car. Mazda will never hit the sales numbers of its top competitors but this looks like it's going to be very competitive within the upmarket SUV segment.
IDK, Look at Telluride numbers. I bet these go to #1 for Mazda.
Case, bringing the Jay Leno big denim energy with that jacket lol.
Wish Toyota and Honda would make well built, high quality vehicles again like Mazda is currently doing. This CX-90 just oozes supreme quality
Toyota is a volume manufacturer and Honda is living on their old reputation.
@@clarkkent9080 - Both haven't made a worthy, dependable vehicle since the 90s.
@@DeadofWinter321 To some people, a vehicle is an appliance that gets you from point A to point B. And for those people, a Toyota is fine as long as you don't mind the miles of cheap plastic and you can avoid the distributer and dealer rip-offs.
In the Golf states and south eastern U.S., the distributors are adding many thousands to the MSRP. Just saw a 2023 Camry on the lot: $38,000 Toyota MSRP, Distributer MSRP of $40,000 plus $5,000 of add ons like Toyocare ($700 for 2 oil changes) for a total cost of $45,000 for a Camry????
Honda has not kept up with the rest of the manufacturers. They still use timing belts more than a decade after other manufacturers switched to timing chains. I guess they don't mind the customer having their vehicle engine bay completely disassembled to replace a timing belt every 60,000 miles since they are not paying the $3,000 cost.
But most people are more concerned with paint colors and apple car play and android audio than what makes it go.
@@clarkkent9080i remembered timing belt is 100k. So you might only need change once.
@@moreless4127 Honda has been sued twice for their timing belts breaking before their recommended change interval of 90K miles. Hondas have interference engines which means if a timing belt breaks the engine will suffer major internal damage and need replaced.
So did Honda fix the issue? NO Honda now recommends changing the timing belt (that is an expensive job) no later than 90K miles or no later than 60K miles in severe service. If your Honda timing belt breaks at 65K miles, wanna bet Honda says sorry, you must have driven severe service and should have changed it before 60K.
Honda has terrible customer service
As a 2021 Rav4 Prime owner, I was going to sell my Prime for the CX-70 PHEV, but if the EV range is less than 28 miles like the CX-90, that’s not enough range for my needs to justify picking it over the high-output inline-6. Had it offered at least 38 miles of EV range, it would have been a tough decision.
I agree. 40 miles EV is a sweet spot for many buyers.
The CX-60/70/80/90 have identical power trains.
Concerning the PHEV vs Inline 6; Put them side by side with a PHEV full charge in EV mode. In 25 miles, the PHEV will use 0 gas but the battery will be depleted. The inline-6 gets 25 mpg combined so it will have used 1 gallon of gas. Any further driving and both the PHEV and inline-6 will operate on ICE at 25 mpg combined.
I just filled up at $3,27 per gallon.
The 17.8 Kwh battery only uses 80% but with charging inefficiencies it would take ~ 15 Kw to fully charge. Based on my electric rate, taxes, fees, I pay 0.20 cents per Kw ( most areas pay more) or $3.20 to fully charge the PHEV battery. There are many reasons to buy an EV or PHEV but in this case, saving money is not one of them.
They need to put that i6 in the Miata
It's a great looking Mazda inside and out. I do like seeing the "rebirth" of the Inline 6, or Straight 6 as it's also known. I would like to know the Mileage for the PHEV Model. Also, is it a different engine in the PHEV or the same engine?
It’s a different engine, the PHEV is a 2.5 four-cylinder paired with a 8 speed automatic
TFL in my home SF/Bay Area. Hope you enjoyed your stay
How’s the homeless population over there
depends if they get their window smashed in. im a CA, but sf is a joke.
Def something the city has to work on. But it’s a great place with lots to do nonetheless.
So excited for this car.
Mazda always has its characteristic! Very less to copying others from the market
Will the PHEV run well on regular unleaded?
Will sell like absolute hotcakes
Kase magnificent job buddy
It is nice to see Mazda figured out how to make a transmission with more than 6 speeds. 😃
I'l take my reliable 6sp over many 'less so' options form various sources.
I will also take a 6 speed bullet proof transmission over that 8 speed DCT. More gears are for better fuel economy and my CX-5 gets 33 mpg highway
The PHEV costs $ 8,478 (with tax) more than the inline 6 and can only go 25 miles on electric. The inline 6 has a combined 25 mpg so the most the PHEV will save you is 1 gallon of gas per day. Divide $8,478 by your price per gallon and that is how many days you would have to drive to just break even, not considering the cost of battery replacement sometime after 100K miles. For may area that is 2,826 driving days or 9.05 years if you drive 6 days a week. Can someone explain why Mazda thought this PHEV was a good idea?
Break even is around 80,000 miles on pure electric plus another 80,000 on gas, no thank!
@@veowsaku I stand corrected, there is no break even point. Side by side a PHEV goes 25 miles on one charge while the inline 6 requires 1 gallon of gas to go the same 25 miles. After that, they both operate on ICE and get 25 mpg combined fuel economy.
The PHEV has a 17.8 Kwh battery. While it may only utilize 80% of the battery to minimize degradation, it would require ~ 16 Kw to recharge fully considering charging inefficiencies. My electric rate including surcharges, taxes, etc, is 20 cents per Kw and that is below many regions of the country.
That means it would cost me $3.20 to charge the battery and I just filled up at $3,27 per gallon.
That does not even take the added cost of the PHEV into consideration.
That suede will become very dark brown in probably a year. That's a grime magnet.
Not necessarily if you and your passengers are mature adults that don’t wipe your Cheeto fingers everywhere.
Mazda did an amazing job with the cx-90, as beautiful as the interior is I would be concerned about keeping the soft materials clean.
Glad that I will buy a fully loaded CX-90 PHEV or Inline-6 Turbo S anyway.
one day youll leave your parents basement....

Nice car ❤
Off road capability is going to determine how popular this AWD will be (at least in my eyes) without torque converter. 👌
Awesome Made in Japan vehicle. The quality is amazing. It beats any Honda or Acura vehicles.
So, same price range as the Honda Pilot but much better interior and drivetrains….plural! Two options from a small company like Mazda! This should run circles around the pilot/telluride/palisade/Highlander…etc
Kudos to Mazda for scheduling an event in San Francisco this time of the year. 😂
On EV only mode if you floor it, it STILL kicks the engine on? You can't lock out the ICE in ev only mode?
Really nice mazda
This Mazda looks like a Ford Explorer in the front. That's just me though. Even on the side it looks like the explorer too with its long front hood. and shorter rear.
Seems good what's the TLDR for MPG City and highway????
24 mpg city 28 mpg highway. That’s with AWD standard.
@@faheemabbas3965 Thanks.. pretty subpar Even with the plug-in.
As a photographer, y’all must have hated having to film in such gloomy weather. 🤯
Where is the clip about the powertrain options , you have mentioned here?
why is the video so blurry?
San Fran
Buy it now! Used will go for $10k over original MSRP.
Walk away 20 feet from it and you will get a window smashed in guaranteed. SF has turned to complete crap. That said I love this new SUV from Mazda. Best engine in the class my a mile.
Nice kid, good review...people should be more respectful
Wicked!
Suede on the dash is a non-starter. Within a few months it will look like shite, especially if you have kids who put their grubby little hands everywhere.
It's in an area that doesn't require touching. Kids don't sit in the front seat usually, and when they do they are buckled so they aren't touching the dash. The dumbest areas are steering wheels.
@@HDHQDIRECT
So you've never had rugrats crawl all the car when parked or ever had anything spill on the dashboard?
Let's get serious for a minute, the dash is not the place for easily stained materials.
Just get the regular leather option then.
How many liters are both engines?
3.3 turbo inline 6 cylinder
2.5 four-cylinder for the PHEV model
Whistle
I feel like $60k is an absurd price for a car. Having said that, I would be very interested in one of these next year when there are used ones with less the 10k miles. I’d prefer to let someone with more money and vanity absorb the initial depreciation. It’s definitely a contender as a replacement for my beloved Ford Flex Limited which I have had for a decade.
Its a 3 row suv with inline 6 what you expect to pay?
Which is a great strategy. However, I like to know how the car has been maintained. I buy every car new, and we rarely trade them in until they are 6-10 years old. At that point, whether I have paid $60 or $45 k for the car is kind of lost in the wash.
Next Year a Used one will be $72,000
@@jayhiggins5239 With the way the market has been for used cars you might be right.
@@vince7349 Not $60k
Looking forward to seeing the new Mazda 6 with the inline 6 engine in it
Are you dreaming? I haven’t heard any plan of that?
@@jak30341 easy enough to find information on you tube or google. Quick search will set you all up.
New mazdaspeed mx5 with an I6? Lol
@@jak30341 There was talk of that a few years back but it’s been back-burnered since the 6 has been tentatively eliminated from the lineup. It’s future is uncertain at this juncture. SUV’s are the priority.
He kept talking about regen braking. Does it really have that??? How does an electric motor between the engine and transmission regen???/
Türkçe alt yazı lütfen!
It's 26, not 23
Light Fabric on the dash and doors on a FAMILY Suv? have they lost their minds? Not kid friendly AT ALL! that alone will keep me away from considering this when my lease is up.
There is other interior options as i know,,
IT'S GOT A SPARE TIRE!!!!
Space saver.
Jeez....top of the line 60K? I mean.... Seems like a cool car but no thanks
That shifter is the worse!
Not really a fan. Side profile proportions are wonky..hood too long because of the inline six..it is on the ground practically. As a more car-like crossover?..sure. As an actual SUV? no way. Tech is good and typical Mazda fit and finish. But just really seems like a bunch of other vehicles thrown in a blender. Mehhh. But, this is just my opinion. A fine vehicle I am sure many will enjoy for what it is.
How can any auto reviewer not see the glaring inefficiencies of the PHEV. It only saves (up to) 1 gallon of gas per battery charge and the cost to charge that massive battery is equal to and in may cases more than the cost of 1 gallon of gas.
These reviewers just parrot what the manufacturers tell them and lack any in-depth review. I can't wait for AI to provide true reviews
This guy is a snooze fest
That’s what your baby mama said about you
I'm always excited and my heart beat races when I watch UA-cam car reviews....
That dash material is garbage impossible to clean , give us leather for that money , that Cx is heavy because of those batteries that almost give u no useful mpg , but give u all that weight ! Would of been more economical if it was lighter lol
There’s different interior options for that trim I believe, it’s on Mazda’s website. One of which offers leather interior instead of that dash material.
Then you can buy the in-line 6 without the battery model. As if you can afford 😂
