Thanks for this video. I am buying my second Mazda. My first one is a 2009 Mazda 6 that I bought used. It now has 230k miles and still driving well. I gave it to my 16 year old as a first car. So reliable.
I would like to know because if I ask the dealership, they will surely keep upselling by adding more maintenance services that aren't really necessary.
Mazda really knows how to engineer proper steering that has excellent feel and feedback. The 2.5 4 cylinder has been built and refined over decades, it's very reliable. I know styling is subjective but to my eyes they look better than than most. The overall quality of their vehicles is top notch, and their new generations of interiors really look nice, with actual REAL buttons that you don't have to go through a stupid menu on a touch screen to access. I woulden't hesitate to actually buy a Mazda as a long term vehicle and not worry about having to lease one just in case it's a lemon. Two thumbs up from me, I have to say I' m with Nathan about being a bit of a Mazda fanboy, because they are good quality vehicles.
They have partnered with Toyota on the manufacturing side of things, no more Ford, so not too worried. They have been making Mazda's in North America for years now, Personally, if I had a choice between made in Japan or here, I would take made in Japan.@@reachboio
Great video! I just got the same "S Preferred" trim for my wife and had just experienced similar decision process. For daily drive the lower trim model is very very good enough. There are two critical things you didn't mention but I think worth talking about. First, all CX-50 trims have the same safety systems (blind spot support, lane departure, etc.). This is why I like Mazda because you don't need to sacrifice safety on lower trim. Second, even the 2nd lowest S Preferred trim has the power lift gate for the trunk.
I actually prefer the look of the lower priced model...and everyone knows those 17s are going to ride a lot better than the 20s. I have the same base 2.5L w 6spd auto in my current 2014 CX-5 (the 1st year the 2.5 was offered) and with 100k miles driven it's still going strong even with towing my 1000 lb bass boat.
Ironically, when I was considering the CX 50 and possibly the Lexus NX, to get the features on the premium plus non-turbo CX 50, it was about $11,000 cheaper than to get the features on the Lexus NX luxury package trim! Needless to say, I bought a soul red crystal CX 50 premium plus nonturbo, it’s just been a little over a year ago that I bought it! I love it!
I was also considering the NX and went with the CX 50, the NX had some benefits over the CX but was literally over 25,000 more expensive to get the same features as the CX 50. 42k USD vs 67k USD. The CX 50 also drive much better. However Mazda not quite being a luxury brand is very apparent still. Their 360 view isn't great, they lack lux features like kick sensor for gate lift, the infotainment options are lacking, a few 'niceties' like ambient lighting and cornering lights, and mazda being a smaller brand is on full display with their inferior implementation of things like adaptive headlights, lane keep assist, traffic assist, wireless charger, wireless carplay integration, heated steering wheel, etc. If Mazda can figure out how to keep up in the software department at minimum and maybe expand their expenditure a few thousand bucks I think Mazda can easily compete in the luxury segment.
The Mazda has a much more responsive drive too boot although most folks like a numb drive. Mazdas aren't for everyone and are geared for people that like road feedback so they know what their vehicles doing. Hence why they're called a driver's vehicle.
I always get a few laughs when Nathan is presenting. One of my favorites was when he had the T-shirt with Andre's face on it and the word "pimp" written in Russian on it. Best part? He low-keyed it the whole time. Never brought it up; just kept on as if nothing was strange in any way. Lol.
Rule of law is keep as much as close to base model in any vehicle for best cost proposition. Goodies cost 30-40 percent more over base always. This is how they make money, now a days when average price is 40 plus k and multiple cars needed in house hold people have to really check needs vs wants proposition. If choice between turbo and non I will go with non turbo if one want to keep car for 10 years. In Mazda preferred trim is sweet spot for most.
Excellent video. This is the first time I've seen one of your videos, and the reason it come up in my feed is that I drive Mazdas, and watch a lot of Mazda videos on UA-cam. I've been driving Mazdas since May 2016, when I leased a 2016 Mazda3 hatchback 2.0 Touring with the six-speed automatic. Great little car. In 2018 I replaced it with a 2018 CX-5 Touring AWD (snow on Long Island, the Mazda3 had trouble, hence the AWD crossover). In June 2020, after I had moved down here to Florida, I leased a 2020 CX-5 Touring FWD (no snow, hence FWD). Then, last November 28, 2022, I leased a 2023 CX-50 Preferred Plus AWD (no FWD option available anymore, plus I found that FWD with traction control isn't as good as AWD with traction control). All of them have been non-turbo, because I haven't felt the need for the extra power. Over 90% of the time I drive by myself, plus most of my driving, both on Long Island and in Florida has been on relatively flat terrain. However, if I needed to tow a trailer on a regular basis, then I would have gone with the CX-50 Turbo because of the 3500 lb towing capacity. When I leased the CX-50, I first drove the Premium Plus (non-turbo) model. I didn't like the feel of the leather seats, because I felt like the material pinched my rear, something which I don't find with the cloth seats in the Preferred Plus. I do enjoy the ride and handling of the CX-50 (I find it has less body roll than the CX-5). I also love the ergonomics of all Mazdas. I have found that I can pretty much go from one vehicle to another, and yet know instinctively where all of the controls are located.
Nathan thanks so much for the excellent video. I have been waiting for somebody to do a comparison of these 2 trims. Everyone seems to do an extensive review on the most expensive trims and do very little or no reviews on the lower trims. This car is in my future and you just confirmed my original thoughts….I will go for the preferred for ride quality and of course it is less expensive in every way. Awesome job!!!!
Or maybe even consider the premium trim level which still gives you the 17 inch wheels but you get the 12 speaker Bose system and a panoramic sunroof!😁
Yep that is a possibility that I was exploring but it does start to get very pricey! The good thing about this car I would not be afraid to purchase used ….no turbo, no CVT!!! The non turbo will last a very long time !!!!
I just bought the CX50 S Premium package. It has the 17 inch wheels but comes with a sunroof and the Bose speakers. The sticker price was just over $35,000 but I got $2,500 off the price from dealer rebates and Mazda rebates. So I got it for $32,000 something. Not bad I think!!
I split the difference and bought a 2023 CX50 Turbo. Really like the Premium Plus Turbo but didn’t want to pay the extra for basically just the 360 camera, Headset Up display and vented seats. But I definitely wanted the Turbo engine, makes a huge difference when trying to merge into traffic and is a lot more fun to drive.
Non turbo owner here, and positively love it. Can we also appreciate the hood has pneumatic struts? Don’t see a lot of that these days in anything but expensive cars.
I have a 2024 Premium non-turbo. I think the power is more than adequate and I like a car with some pep. It's super smooth and the trans is too. Honestly, I have to watch my speed. It's so quiet inside, you don't realize how fast your going.
I think the sweet spot is the preferred ….one above the select. Has everything I will ever need for around the 33,000 mark. All of those other trims are way too expensive. 20” inch wheels ride like crap and the turbo although a very good one in Mazda is still much less reliable than the naturally aspirated 2.5. Plenty of power for every day driving !! Thanks for the great review and comparison👏👏👏👏👏👏
Curious to know whereh you are (city)? I've been shopping & comparing Mazda w Honda HRV, CRV, Rav4 hybrid & Subaru Forester... thought I made the decision. Now I've seen this video & your reply... hmmm
My 18 year old daughter just bought a soul red CX-50. She loves it! I have rode in it and I thought it was a nice ride. It's the non turbo variety but seemed peppy enough. The price of vehicles today is outrageous! But, I believe she made a good choice with the Mazda.
"off-road" is subjective. I live in middle Georgia, 10-20% of my drive time is on dirt roads. The 8.5" clearance of my cx5 is the main reason i chose it over the 7" Rav4. I really see no difference between the cx5 or cx50 other than a couple inches of width. If you want to know what i WOULD pay 10k extra for from Mazda, it's a 6 cylinder in the cx50.
Great video. One thing not noted is that the Preferred trim is NOT the base trim. The base trim is the Select, which I own myself (a 2023 model that was much cheaper)
I would go with 2.5 for reliability if you like to keep it for long, but 2.5T is a good option, if you don't plan to keep it for long. 2.5T is good, but Turbo is not as reliable as 2.5. If you regularly drive in HW for long distance, maybe it would be nice to have 2.5T for passing powers though.
And that's the key question: How long do you intend to keep the car? If I though I was going to keep it forever then reliability would be my most important consideration. Otherwise, its placed well down my important elements list.
Passing power is a meme. 99% of peoples’ struggles with passing come down to being bad drivers who aren’t paying attention to their surroundings or planning ahead until the very last second that they decide they want to move somewhere. Also, I couldn’t even count the amount of times I’ve seen some idiot risk an accident because they feel they MUST pass someone in order to merge instead of just laying off the accelerator a bit and letting the person next to them pass them
Turbos are really how well you maintain the vehicle, it does add another layer of maint. I drive a diesel, so for me it's a non issue, but for a wife or someone who isn't that focused on maint a non turbo is the way to go. I could list a ton of things. I'd probably not buy a turbo vehicle used unless it was a diesel. People just drive stuff like crap, same goes for thier homes, then stuff breaks, wonder why idk😂
We tested the 2023 cx5 base and we were a little underwhelmed. We then tried the turbo trim (non signature). It was like night and day so we got the turbo.
Nathan thank you buddy, I have never seen more honest review. I share your opinion when it comes to cars, that less is more as every day drive goes. For years trying to explain to friends concept of smaller wheel, better ride and fuel efficiency. Not to mention winter and cost of having two sets of tires/wheels. Mazda fan here, cant wait to get hands on cx50. Bravo!
Depends on needs and wants. If you don't care about the low gas mileage and extra price of premium fuel plus bells and whistles and engaging drive, go for the Turbo. If you are more budget conscious, and don't require flat out acceleration etc, get the lower model. It'll handle very well too, as all Mazda's do.
@@LafemmebearMusic I like simple stuff with function. I dislike leather seats and even more the fake leather seats automakers are trying to pass off as premium options. Luxury features are nice, but generally don't impress me. I want a vehicle with comfortable, cloth seats, plenty of leg room, and a powerful engine. I drive a base model Honda Ridgeline because it has all the performance and function of the higher trims, but has cloth seats. My wife has a Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid in the mid level SE trim. It's powerful, has comfy cloth seats, and has all the safety tech. The rims are small and the interior basic, just like I like it (same for my wife). I have a fancy Italian motorcycle which is my "livin' a little" object. Love all the trch and features in new cars from an academic standpoint, just no desire to own all that if that makes sense.
@@ashleyward8396 She loves it! Within 10 seconds on her first test drive, she had the "I have to have this" look on her face. The hybrid is nice. Toyota has that stuff dialed. Ride quality is nice and compliant. Steering is very light, a must for my wife who lacks upper body strength. It is not a sporty vehicle, but it's quick and handles well. It drives effortlessly. It isn't the most refined in terms of road and engine noise. I don't find it objectionable, especially for a subcompact crossover. It has the typical CVT engine drone, but the hybrid system allows the engine to operate at lower RPM, so you don't need to be as heavy on the throttle. Another nit to pick is the lack of interior storage space. There aren't a lot of bins or cubbies. If you want a Corolla Cross with a nicer interior and driving experience, look at the Lexus UX250H. It starts closer to $40k, though. The RAV4 Hybrid XLE or SE will run you somewhere between a Corolla Cross Hybrid and the Lexus, but will be a bit larger and nicer to drive. In any case, I highly recommend a Tpyota hybrid product.
I sat in a top trim CRV and then less than an hour later a one step above base trim CX-50 and I liked the Mazda interior better. Didn’t drive either though.
Just bought my wife a Preferred S CX50. Has a few options like power seat, power tailgate, all weather mats. We love it. AWD, wireless CarPlay, a ton of standard safety and driver assist features, amazing steering and road manners. We are sold. Next up will be a CX70.
I have the very first CX-5 base model (but with bluetooth). It’s now been almost 12 years since I bought it and I have spent $80 in repairs (not maintenance). Even the maintenance has been minimal. I only have 140K miles on it but it has been a relatively fantastic, reliable vehicle and it does handle well for a base model. While I am considering a CX50 at various trim levels, I have the added benefit of living with a base model for so long that anything new is a major upgrade. I am considering a low tier turbo for the fun and towing, but may consider a used Meridian model. Whatever the case, I personally really appreciate the reliability from Mazda. Absolutely fantastic to not have to worry or spend needless time and money on repairs.
The turbo is way more reliable the last few years than it was previously. Still probably not as reliable as the regular engine but they're much more comparable now. That being said, I personally like the added towing of the turbo, the heads up display, the leather interior, the nicer wheels, etc.
They could probably be more reliable if people took care of them better. They need time to warn up *and* time to cool down after driving. Some mechanics recommend leaving your car on for a few minutes once you park after driving aggressively. All that heated, pressured air needs time to be pumped out of the system
Good morning, everyone ! Excellent video, Nathan. Well I have a 2020 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring with 26,000 miles that I bought brand new at the end 0f year 2020 non turbo in snowflake pearl with black and white interior and it has leather seats that are heated and ventilated, Bose system, adaptive led headlights and fog lights, also heated rear seats and all the safety tech for 35,000 dollars. At the time I had a chance to buy polymetal grey CX-5 with red leather seats and turbo engine for 33,000 but it didn't even have a heated steering wheel or heated rear seats,so I think for the money that I paid for mine, I think I got a hell of a deal !!!
I'm also considering a certified, used CX-5 with your specs. Great car and great deal. But now some used CX-50s are becoming available. Tough call between the two.
Great comparison video! Lots of info. I’ll be going for the Premium Plus next year. I’ve had two Mazdas in the pass and they both were great. I had their square-ish bodied Protege and then the squared body MVP. I gave up the MVP because I needed something bigger and with more power so I got my current ‘06 Envoy XL. It has served me well all these years but now I want something a bit sporty.
I love my CX5 first one was a 2013 model that came out early 2012, fully loaded and all wheel drive, way under powered but loved it. After over 150000 miles traded on a 2019 fully loaded without all wheel drive now living in Fl. Average 27 mpg here in this crazy traffic on the west coast. Yes with the CX50 they have box their self in on what they can do with the CX5
Great video - thanks! I agree. I'd choose the lower end model because everything, EVERYTHING, is just too expensive. I still have my first brand new car, a 2010 Mazda 3 Touring, which was mid range back then. It is the best car I have ever owned. It has 170,000 miles now and has never given me any trouble. It still even has it's original clutch! I am starting to look at the CX50's, but will wait until they come out with at least a hybrid drivetrain. All the bells and whistles are very tempting in the dealership, but once you have them, you realize that you can do without them just fine. There is a more lasting appeal to getting the more base vehicle that is less expensive both initially and long term - that great feeling of knowing you made a smart choice and got a bargain.
I flippin love this car - I just wish there were a model/version that had those un-refined black plastic fender pieces painted to match the car. I don't mind the plastic at the bottom - but the plastic cladding is out of control (and not just on mazdas - have you seen the new outback - OMG) - at least make a few models that had them painted - like they do on the CX-5. The style/quality/design of this car is fantastic.
I agree! The black cladding that's featured everywhere a SUV rolls is ridiculous. In December I saw a white CX5 turbo signature - clean, beautiful, sleek without the black trim everywhere. Can I find one now? Not yet(!)
Actually, if you compare the premium plus trim of the nonturbo versus the premium plus trim in the turbo there’s about a five or $6000 difference. And you also get a few little extras on the turbo premium plus trim.
So before all the bs about the seats, people were freezing in their cars? I feel like it’s just a gimmick that doesn’t really matter, people are too spoiled/like to show off.
@@DanielIonescu-rt8jcwith that logic, what are you doing living in a house with electricity! It's not like ppl die without it! Also what are you doing on a car video, you should be riding a horse... People don't need a car to live!
I just went a test drove a Mazda CX 50 and when driving I noticed that it wasn’t accelerating well and I looked down and the check engine light was on and in the dash in front of me it said that it was in engine failure!
I bought a cx5 touring over the GT based solely on the tire size. 17 in on touring and 19 in on GT. In 2013 a 17 in tire was appox. 150.00 a tire in 2013 a 19 in tire was approx. 325.00 a tire lower now but back then only one manufaturers made a 19 in tire for a CX5. Still have my 2013 with 82K and its been trouble free. BTW all 2013 CX5 had the 2.0 engine with 155 HP adequate for 2 people and a big dog but runs out of breath over 85 MPH if i still drove over 85, i dont. 21:28
I got the 23 preferred plus: pretty much the same one as the preferred in this video, but with the same sunroof than the more expensive one. Sure the Premium turbo is nice, but for my daily drive, mostly in traffic, I arrived at the same conclusion than Nathan…no need to spend more money.
Great review! We test drove a Preferred Plus and a non turbo Premium Plus back to back last weekend. Liked the Preferred Plus but we drove the Premium Plus just for comparison. I didn't expect any difference other than the obvious differences in options and of course the 20" wheels. To my surprise, there was a noticeable difference between the two. The Premium Plus felt more refined, it seemed a tad quieter, and more "quality", which I realize is a subjective thing. Ended up putting a deposit on the Premium Plus. I really wanted to like the Preferred Plus better in order to save a few bucks but the wife and I both felt the difference was enough to justify the added cost. It's really weird because the cars are identical mechanically. I think the lesson here is that no two cars are identical and there can be differences even in the same model and trim.
I read on a different site that the Premium Plus uses a different windshield than the preferred. The premium plus has the windshield with the wiper deicers and this means it's likely a higher quality laminated glass. People seemed to agree that this causes some of the road noise deadening for that trim and up. I'm probably going to snag a CX50 premium plus today.
@@brianbuckley998 Interesting - and that seems like it would explain it. We ended up getting a Preferred Plus exactly one week ago, and I'm super happy we decided to go that route. Fantastic vehicle, and I like it even more than I expected. The heads up display is proving to be very useful, and I had the impression it would be kind of gimmicky. Good luck with your purchase!
A lot of reviewers think that Mazda will phase out the CX-5 in favor of the CX-50 but in reality the CX-5 outsold the CX-50 almost 4-1(2023 sales figures) so it won't happen. I personally feel the shorter head room in the CX-50 adds to the cramped feeling which hurts its sales numbers.
I brought a 2024 blue color CX-50 2.5 S PP AWD. I didn't think I would like it but I love it. I didn't get all the things I wanted, but I also didn't want to pay another $11,000.00 in it either. Wish I would have gotten the tow package. This is my third mazda. I had a B2000 1986 5 speed, which had 250 thousand miles when I sold it. Then I bought a B4000 4x4 Troy Lee 2000 it has 186,000 thousand miles I still own it the dealer ship I bought my cx-50 from wanted me to trade it in. I said no wr still drive it. Love my Mazda.
Well, Nathan, I ordered the preferred simply for the same reason too much money for too much goodies. I likely wouldn’t use and just disable anyway, affordability on replacement tires, cheaper, pleading it, cheaper insurance, cheaper, fuel, mileage cheaper it’s all one needs.
I'm definitely a fully-equipped guys. The only time I'd deviate from that is if were getting a car strictly as a commuter and not as an all-around vehicle for everything. I wouldn't need a car with all the bells and whistles just to commute back and forth to work. In that case, I'd look for something the meets the minimum standards of comfort and that's reliable most of all. Especially if I have a hundred mile round trip to work and back every day. _________________________________________________________________________________________ A very nice engine cover. Although the two holes could have been covered. In any event, at least it hood struts. Something even more expensive cars are leaving off these days. @9:38 that popup screen is an old style first generation HUD. Car makers have moved beyond that clunky design to direct windscreen projection.
I recently got a 2024 CX-5 Turbo Premium and chose it over the CX-50. I liked the CX-5 better all the way around. I want more rapid luxury and less off road vibe. I liked the seats, extra headroom and driving position more in the CX-5. For me it was down to the CX-5 Premium non-turbo trim which still has the Bose stereo and 19 inch rims or the Turbo Premium which adds the turbo and a bunch of extra features like ventilated seats, wireless apple car play/ android auto, wireless phone charger and heads up display. There is a $3900 difference between those two trims and I just wanted a quick nimble fun, luxurious car this time around. My last two cars were a 2001 Isuzu Trooper S trim SUV and a 2006 Honda Odyssey EX-L minivan which are large vehicles, not fun to drive. I'm sure it's the same for the difference in the trims in the CX-50 as in the CX-5. There are problably some features you would really like to have and those might be worth paying for so you can enjoy them over the time you have the car. For me the Bose was a must have as I really enjoy a premium stereo, and I felt that the larger alloy wheels make the car look more upscale. From the Premium trim to the Turbo Premium, I didn't feel that the $3900 was too much to get the turbo engine and the extra features that I could enjoy over the several years that I hope to own the CX-5. That said, if my situation were different, I would be happy with the base or next to base model. It's still the same car, the engine is quieter, smoother ride with the smaller rims and taller rubber, better gas mileage, less money and Mazda really brings the value with standard AWD. There are benefits of getting the less expensive trim not the least of which is $10,000 between the two CX-50 trims in this video. It really comes down to what you want and how much you want to spend. Either way you can be happy with the decision.
Frigging fantastic review. As a Mazda owner, I'm definitely getting a Mazda for my next car. I am faced with the same dilemma, but as a girl who loves horsepower, I'll be going with the Turbo next year when I buy a new vehicle.
I got a CX5 Turbo Signature 2023. This was before I had a baby. Now with a newborn I feel I really didn’t need the Signature. But it’s still nice to have. As a daily driver to move kids around I feel the “cheaper” Mazda is the perfect fit.
The non turbo Mazda Cx-30 and Mazda 3 feel sluggish by comparison with their turbo charged counterparts. I felt the power on the AWD non-turbo Cx-50 was GREAT. I purchased the Mazda 3 Turbo anyway cause that's what I always wanted, but I'm glad I tested the Cx-50. In another life, I purchased the Cx-50.
I got the Premium for 36k - it is fun enough for what I use it for, and the premium has a lot of the fancy features, just not turbo. And I appreciate the better mileage.
I'm going to take a TURBO PREMIUM--- and just LIFT it (factory 1.5 inch lift) and put my own set of 17"wheels and WILD PEAKS on it... and I can paint the graphics myself with plasti-dip and you'd never know the difference.. and save a ton. (and have a LOT more features..)
In my rural area we have a lot of two lane roads. This means one often needs to pass folks and/or log trucks that are moving slowly. When I do pass, I want to get up to passing speed quickly. The turbo will allow me to do that faster than the standard engine. I drove both the standard and the turbo and picked the turbo due to the consideration of the turbo being safer when I need to pass on two lane roads.
I own a 'loaded' Meridian Turbo car, and while it was in service drove a base model around. I don't regret spending the extra money one bit. Almost every tangible aspect of a loaded car is altered over a base car that makes it feel more special, even the sound of the horn is different.
I have the turbo premium plus, and I absolutely love it! It’s missing two features I really wanted: red exterior and the terracotta interior. But I bought mine a month after Mazda sent them to dealerships, and it was the very first one in Mississippi. Swapped the 20s out for a set of 18s and personally, I didn’t notice much difference in ride quality, though the off road tires I put on those wheels hold up to off roading and horrible roads extremely well. The only way to make this car more fun would be a larger engine with over 300hp
Nice video! My husband and I just got our first Mazda, the lower end cx-50 model. Our 3 kids and us love it! The cx-50 VS our older 2001 Toyota Highlander in regards to "trunk space" is a lot less roomie. We couldn't afford to go bigger unfortunately. If space for your stuff is something you gotta have, id check out the cx-70 or cx-90. Side note: According to my husbands boss, the rear end/ back of the cx-50 looks similar to that of a prosche! That was cool to hear and see after our purchase! 😎
Hi David. I just saw your review of the CX70. Putting the hybrid and size difference aside, do you think the quality control of the CX50 made in Alabama meets the same standard as the CX70 made in Japan ? Your opinion matters to me. Thanks in advance.
Turbo or bust for me. I've downgraded from much more expensive turbo suvs from Merc/AMG and BMW turbo V8s so the non-turbo felt awful to me if you're coming up from a similar type of engine you probably won't care but I want to be able to pass uphill at highway speed or be able to merge on to the highway in Ca without fearing that Ill be rear-ended.
I love the fun and sportiness aspect of different vehicles, but I drive a lot, so I go for trims with the features I want, but with a smaller power train as I really need good mileage.
Common misperception: people think you will get to 60 faster on sport mode. Sport mode keeps you in the prime power band longer at the cost od fuel economy. It also makes the throttle a little more agressive. But IF you floor it, youll get the exact same reaponse between sport and normal. Sport mode is good if you need aggressive driving or passing. It will kick you into a lower gear which will mean more ready power when you need it. So less delay overall as its less likely to downshift for more power. But it certainly wont make your 0 to 60 faster.
Love the Ronnie Dio sweater. Knew him back in 1969 when his Band was Ronnie Dio and the Profits and he was playing in small towns before he made it big.
Try averaging 18 mpg. MPG is abysmal. I babied the thing and got a whopping 19mpg. Road-trip mpg 27. Idk. I have the turbo premium. Fun as 4311 to drive though.
I wanted preferred because they have a 2500 off cx-50 select and preferred but they have to be on the dealers lot until July 1st or 3rd, the only other preferred they had was in the process of being sold so I got the select and saved a few thousand since its the lowest possible trim as long as it has bluetooth and cruise control I don't care, it does have the radar cruise control surprised because its the lowest trim, I like that feature a lot because my commute people are always slowing up and speeding up, its quite annoying when on non radar cruise control. but this is good for safety, the radar!
I just bought the CX50 in the S Premium trim. It’s like in the middle between the least expensive and the most expensive. It comes with the sunroof and Bose speakers. I wanted to have SiriusXM and the lesser trims don’t come with it. I honestly thought all vehicles came with SiriusXM these days, was surprised about that! Lol! But I’m happy with my choice, I don’t need a turbo engine. It is a fun vehicle to drive! I traded in my Subaru Outback for it and compared to that the CX50 has a lot more power! Oh and this is my very first Mazda too!
Great review. The only thing you did not talk about was the Bose sound system which you have to buy the more expensive model to have that and those of us that spend a lot of time in the car want a better sound system experience
Very good detail video I enjoy watching my question is do the turbo charge engine in mazda cx50 or cx5 sells more than the natural aspirated engine also do you think mazda cx5 or cx50 is a better vehicle than the Toyota rav4 please respond. Have a safe day.
The RAV4 hybrid and plug in hybrid get much better gas mileage, and this hybrid technology for the Prius has been very reliable, usually at least 175 thousand miles before the big battery or generator fail. However they cost more than a similar Mazda. My wife wanted in dash navigation and the RAV4 had an annual subscription for it. That and the extra price overall made us choose a CX-5 instead. The new RAV4 did drive nice, it was the non hybrid version, that many reviewers say is noisy.
A different reviewer said the 2024 suspension is a little softer and the steering a little lighter. Not a huge amount. But for most people a bit more comfortable.
Thanks for another thorough review! I may get a 2025 Turbo Premium Plus after the first of the year to replace my 2023 Ford Escape ST Line. I don't keep vehicles a long time, so longevity (turbo vs. non-turbo) is not an issue for me.
Funny that CX-50's biggest competitor is CX-5. I'd argue the CX-5 is more capable "off-roader" with the shorter wheelbase, and better rear suspension. I think with CX-50 they're trying to steal away some of that station wagon crossover (Subaru Outback/Forester) crowd. The CX-5 lives in such a sweet spot though it's going to be tough to convince people to switch over. Base CX-5 pricing is also one of the few remaining old school bargains out there.
Excellent review. I just got the preferred plus for the reasons you stated. Better mileage. Simpler with no turbo that can go bad in the future so likely better long term reliability. More tire better for bumps and off road. And you still get most of the features that makes the vehicle feel premium.
Great video on the mazda cx50 comparison have you driven the acura RDX AWD A-spec? I would like you to compare it to the mazda cx50 turbo. Let me know your opinion when you do.
Side note on the CX5. Mazda does plan on keeping it around and is going to be releasing a new one in 2025/2026. The CX5 is considered more premium than the CX50 as the CX50 is built in partnership with Toyota (Corolla Cross) to compete more with Subaru. They want the off road buyers and the premium buyers.
Thanks for this video. I am buying my second Mazda. My first one is a 2009 Mazda 6 that I bought used. It now has 230k miles and still driving well. I gave it to my 16 year old as a first car. So reliable.
Hi! Can you give me a tip? So what was your yearly maintenance to make last that longer? 230k miles is amazing!
I would like to know because if I ask the dealership, they will surely keep upselling by adding more maintenance services that aren't really necessary.
That 16 year old is a lucky girl
Mazda really knows how to engineer proper steering that has excellent feel and feedback. The 2.5 4 cylinder has been built and refined over decades, it's very reliable. I know styling is subjective but to my eyes they look better than than most. The overall quality of their vehicles is top notch, and their new generations of interiors really look nice, with actual REAL buttons that you don't have to go through a stupid menu on a touch screen to access. I woulden't hesitate to actually buy a Mazda as a long term vehicle and not worry about having to lease one just in case it's a lemon. Two thumbs up from me, I have to say I' m with Nathan about being a bit of a Mazda fanboy, because they are good quality vehicles.
what do you think about them being made here at home instead of japan
They have partnered with Toyota on the manufacturing side of things, no more Ford, so not too worried. They have been making Mazda's in North America for years now, Personally, if I had a choice between made in Japan or here, I would take made in Japan.@@reachboio
But what is a biker doing in a car lol
Great video! I just got the same "S Preferred" trim for my wife and had just experienced similar decision process. For daily drive the lower trim model is very very good enough. There are two critical things you didn't mention but I think worth talking about. First, all CX-50 trims have the same safety systems (blind spot support, lane departure, etc.). This is why I like Mazda because you don't need to sacrifice safety on lower trim. Second, even the 2nd lowest S Preferred trim has the power lift gate for the trunk.
17” inch wheels/tires ride better also…larger wheels equals less side wall/harsher ride over bumps.
Does the S Preferred have the ability to switch back and forth between an analog and digital speedometer?
I actually prefer the look of the lower priced model...and everyone knows those 17s are going to ride a lot better than the 20s. I have the same base 2.5L w 6spd auto in my current 2014 CX-5 (the 1st year the 2.5 was offered) and with 100k miles driven it's still going strong even with towing my 1000 lb bass boat.
Same, the smaller all black rims fit the car better
Are you going to review it after 5-10 years from now and how it holds up? On UA-cam or on any of your social media?
Ironically, when I was considering the CX 50 and possibly the Lexus NX, to get the features on the premium plus non-turbo CX 50, it was about $11,000 cheaper than to get the features on the Lexus NX luxury package trim! Needless to say, I bought a soul red crystal CX 50 premium plus nonturbo, it’s just been a little over a year ago that I bought it! I love it!
Congrats! I wish they came in right-hand-drive for where I live. One of those would suit me just fine. In Soul Crystal Red of course...lol.
Also the Lexus NX feels small and rides on run flat tires with no spare tire.
@@10tenman10 Good to know, ouch! Used to own a Mini Cooper S with the same.
Lol.
Not really at all.
I heard Mazda is dealing! Congrats and enjoy the car !
Have you test drove the turbo version? How noticable is the power difference? Is the NA livable to drive? Powerwise?
I have a 2024 Premium non-turbo. I think the power is more than adequate and I like a car with some pep. It's super smooth and the trans is too. Honestly, I have to watch my speed. It's so quiet inside, you don't realize how fast your going.
What is that?
I think the sweet spot is the preferred ….one above the select. Has everything I will ever need for around the 33,000 mark. All of those other trims are way too expensive. 20” inch wheels ride like crap and the turbo although a very good one in Mazda is still much less reliable than the naturally aspirated 2.5. Plenty of power for every day driving !!
Thanks for the great review and comparison👏👏👏👏👏👏
I bought the turbo in May. $38960 was the msrp. Paid$38460. It's fun to drive no regrets.
did you finance it or pay off at the time purchased?
Curious to know whereh you are (city)? I've been shopping & comparing Mazda w Honda HRV, CRV, Rav4 hybrid & Subaru Forester... thought I made the decision. Now I've seen this video & your reply... hmmm
My 18 year old daughter just bought a soul red CX-50. She loves it! I have rode in it and I thought it was a nice ride. It's the non turbo variety but seemed peppy enough. The price of vehicles today is outrageous! But, I believe she made a good choice with the Mazda.
I honestly came for the info but stayed for this guy's nice attitude. You're a cool dude, Nathan! Cheers
This is an excellent topic for a review video -- base vs loaded. Keep it up!
Damn, in Canada our cheapest option is the premium trim and dealerships won’t even keep those on the lot, they’re only available via special order.
I like the look of the CX-50 more than the CX-5 but the CX-5 retains IRS making it handle even better, turbo or not.
gas turbo engines tend to fail sooner, sadly
I’d lean towards reliability with the base model🤷♂️
Nathan thank you buddy, I have never seen more honest review. I share your opinion when it comes to cars, that less is more as every day drive goes. For years trying to explain to friends concept of smaller wheel, better ride and fuel efficiency. Not to mention winter and cost of having two sets of tires/wheels. Mazda fan here, cant wait to get hands on cx50.
Bravo!
You helped in our shopping. We bought a CX-50 Select. At price point great deal. All equipment we needed.they
Hows the passing power with the base engine?
I got the cheapest turbo... the engine alone is worth whatever that cost is.
Also anyone considering one of these, the paint is really thin and scratches very easily.
I like your style of review. Very informative, with lots of little details, and humorous.
I like the cheap trims
Give me those little rims
Cloth seats, no turbo
Money left in the bank-o
Boring but I hear you. It’s not like you’re buying a Lexus or bmw live a little life short 😊
@@aaronbehindbarshow does she like the Toyota? I've been looking at one
CRV is terrible in every aspect - no power, no handling, CVT trans - just awful
Just bought my wife a Preferred S CX50. Has a few options like power seat, power tailgate, all weather mats. We love it. AWD, wireless CarPlay, a ton of standard safety and driver assist features, amazing steering and road manners. We are sold. Next up will be a CX70.
Hows the passing power with the NA engine?
Loved this review! Always wanted a direct comparison between the trims!!
I like the premium plus trim. Non-turbo, leather seats and with Bose speakers
Does that have the adaptive headlights or is that just on turbos?
Thats honestly the way to go. Bose sound system and leather. I can honestly do with out the turbo.
I got the same car 2020 AWD with no turbo 40k miles for 23k lol I think I got a good deal too! Leather seats, Bose and runs new.
Not yet(!)
If it don’t have ventilated (and heated) seats and heating steering wheel, it doesn’t matter how cheap it is, I’d rather pay for what I want.
I really like this answer

I have had 2 mazda 3s hatchback and very great car and I just bought CX50 PPT. And I absolutely enjoy this car.
I just went a test drove a Mazda CX 50 and when driving I noticed that it wasn’t accelerating well and I looked down and the check engine light was on and in the dash in front of me it said that it was in engine failure!
I came here for the CX-50 review, I stayed for the Ronnie James Dio sweater 👍
Nice shirt. Dio is radical. You must love it a lot as I lost count how many recent videos you did wearing it. lol
If you’re looking for zippy fun try the CX-30 with that same 2.5L turbo. Less weight = more go.
This is the video I didn't know i needed. I'm sold
I’d go with the Turbo at a lower trim. At the end of the day I keep my vehicles for a minimum of 10yrs, and I want to enjoy the driving part.
i'd take a fully loaded non-turbo version instead.
I disagree. The CX-5 felt way more cramped to me. There’s no room to spread your knees. The CX-50 felt much roomier.
I felt much more cramped in the cx5 then the cx50 being wider. I thought for sure I wanted a cx5 but bought the cx50
Then I bought a B4000 4x4 Troy Lee 2000 it has 186,000
thousand miles I still own it the dealer ship I bought my cx-50 from wanted me to trade it in.
I appreciate the comparison of package offerings of the same model. I agree with the idea of saving some dough with the cheaper one.
Mazda should offer the base model with an optional turbo. 17” tires makes a lot more sense and looks better with the ragged look of the CX50.

A very nice engine cover.
BOTH will sell like hotcakes!
Mazda has luxury level interiors and are as or more reliable than Toyotas. They are the sleeper.
The horn? Ok.
CX-50 is def on my radar for when I eventually replace the 2019 Tucson
I have the turbo premium plus, and I absolutely love it! It’s missing two features I really wanted: red exterior and the terracotta interior. But I bought mine a month after Mazda sent them to dealerships, and it was the very first one in Mississippi. Swapped the 20s out for a set of 18s and personally, I didn’t notice much difference in ride quality, though the off road tires I put on those wheels hold up to off roading and horrible roads extremely well. The only way to make this car more fun would be a larger engine with over 300hp
It is touch in Carplay or Android Auto. Comes in handy at times, even though I rarely touch it.
Thanks for this review, we need more base model reviews. And I just wish they'd make the turbo available in the base model
Going on 2 months with our 2024 cx-50 turbo premium. For me, well worth the extra $$
Huge props to the DIO Xmas sweater 🤘🤘🤘
Although the engine puts out less HP. I think you are correct in cxhosing the CX-5. You rock.
I like both honestly.
RJD sweater is the best thing about this video! (Mazda is cool too)
Love the Ronnie Dio sweater. Knew him back in 1969 when his Band was Ronnie Dio and the Profits and he was playing in small towns before he made it big.
if you wanted to do a conversion for camping, this or a cx5?
i own a mazda 3 but now want a camper, has to be mazda
Try averaging 18 mpg. MPG is abysmal. I babied the thing and got a whopping 19mpg. Road-trip mpg 27. Idk. I have the turbo premium. Fun as 4311 to drive though.
50 or 5?
I wanted preferred because they have a 2500 off cx-50 select and preferred but they have to be on the dealers lot until July 1st or 3rd, the only other preferred they had was in the process of being sold so I got the select and saved a few thousand since its the lowest possible trim as long as it has bluetooth and cruise control I don't care, it does have the radar cruise control surprised because its the lowest trim, I like that feature a lot because my commute people are always slowing up and speeding up, its quite annoying when on non radar cruise control. but this is good for safety, the radar!
Why is noone mentioning Cylinder-deactivation in non-turbo models? Would that be a reliability issue down the road or ar high miles?
Mazda is a very underrated brand! My problem with their cars is the interior space!
@jeffruebens8355 have you ever driven the cx5 turbo if yes what is your opinion on it compared to the natural aspirated cx5.
Your sweater is the best part of this vid \m/
I heard Mazda retuned the suspension and steering feel for 2024. Did you notice any difference/improvements in those areas?
I have a feeling these were 2023 models so they may not have the upgraded dampers
@@eleanormassaro5195 I suspect you're right. Thanks Eleanor.
I wanted the premium for the Bose stereo, but I realize now I need to get a preferred package, so I can avoid the unfixable sunroof rattling.
As an owner of the Turbo version, it is well worth it if you have the money.
Need vs want vs personal preference vs household finances = wife and I went with the non turbo model.
Really enjoying the style /build here. Great work Mazda
