NOTES after making this test. It becomes pretty clear that with the majority of my speakers being Celestion Vintage 30, how different they can sound from each other, even though they are identical. I would say obviously the cabinet size and build makes a difference, but the differences between two identical speakers can be big. Things like playtime per speaker per hour makes a big difference too. Signal Path: Guitar Solar AB1.7C / Engl Savage 60 / CAB / Neumann TLM102 Lowpass filter for post processing. To make a comparison as fair as possible, the microphone is always pointed straight into the speaker. This is not how I usually mic an amplifier but for the sake of comparing all of these, this is the fairest way. Hence the lowpass filter to remove the absolute high end of the amplified tone.
The year the speaker was made makes a difference. I think around early-mid 2000 celestion altered the manufacturing process or a material supplier for the V30 and moved manufacture to china. The change is pretty drastic between the two.
Always making sure you have a decent control with these audio experiments to ensure the most legitimate and fair result is key. Ola does a good job of this 👍
Bigger (which I guess I am). I hope I'm not too cringey.... That would be a dream come true for me!!!! Anyways, from the biggest Dimebag fan to the next, keep doing what you do!!! You rock, man!!!!
Crazy how perfect the amp sounds with the ENGL XL oversize cabinet. They're made for each other! I love this cabinet with my Blackstar series one 100 too, it's just awesome!
Yeah, Mesa Oversized is #1, & then #2 for me was the Hesu 2x12. I've never looked into the Demon 12's prior to this, but... damn! That 2x12 was pretty bad ass! ALL crispy percussive chuggalisciousness!!! ❤ Think I'm in love lol! Oops NM, that Hesu 2x12 was running t75's not Demon's. Maybe it was the 4x12 running Demon's? I'll have to go back and check again. I remember thinking I'd have to check them out when I heard them. Sounded interesting. I wonder how they'd sound in a 2x12 format? Probably amazing. Anyway, nice job Ola! As always sir, You are one bad motherfucker and I thank you for doing what you do!
Man your guitar tones are always killer but let's talk about that sick ass bass tone that thickens it all up. Can you do a vid on what you did on the bass for this album? Appreciate you Ola.
Didn't he say he just used his archetype plini plugin with the same profile for the bass? (maybe i'm getting it wrong, but i remember him saying something like that, but maybe that was for his riff challenge)
@@BigMetalDaddy1301 if he said that I missed it . That bass tone on his last album is what helps make that guitar sound chugalicious tho. Did he use the plug-in for that whole album?
the T75 sounded the best to my ears, and I absolutely love working with them live! the Demon was a close second. the Jaguar has this chewey Dimebag character to it and I wish someone reissued it today! I'd say it shines more with a relatively brighter head or there must've been an EQ boosting these highs on the Pantera records to sort of "lift the towel off of the cab". the Greenback also sounded kinda muffled, but it sounds super thick! I get why people like blending them with V30s. the EVH had the highs be way too high in the frequency range, kinda being fizzy without that cutting edge. Out of all the V30 cabs the Engl sounded the best to my ears as it was the least fizzy out of them, and the Hesu sounded the tightest maybe because it's a 2x12.
The overall clarity , and the immediacy /tightness of the low end response of The Engl XXL are like nothing else I've heard in a 4x12... you did a good job of capturing that here.
This type of shootout is exactly the one I suggested in your previous shootout video. Thank you for making it, it's impressive to hear how much these cabinets differ in sound. Even two Mesa Oversized cabinets with the same speakers significantly differ from each other. Great content, thank you!
gotta say, the Hesu 4x12 cab and the Randall 4x12 cab were my favorites! but that 5150 was so distinct, too. dunno which one I would get if i had the money!
I'd like to see a video featuring the Mick Thomson signature Eminence speaker, the Celestion G12K-100, and a V30 all compared alone as well as blended. I have a Mesa 4x12 with V30s and I'm thinking about changing two of the speakers out for those other options. That could be another video idea, how to change out speakers
Hell yeah. Cream backs w/V30s in any 4x12 cab rocks. As for changing out speakers, it depends on the cab and there are a ton of how-to videos available here on UA-cam
I have a cab with 4 DV-77s in them, pretty solid speakers I feel like putting in two speakers with more high end in them would be perfect in a mesa cab. Wish me luck dudes!
I’ve got 2 DV77s in my Mesa oversized 4x12 and it kicks ass. Adds a lot of low end clarity and punch but still has that v30 sizzle that’s in your face. I don’t mic them, just okay them in the room and they sound great.
It's always interesting to hear how some cabinets sound so different, even when they have the same speakers in them. Great video! Shows exactly how damn important the cabinet is.
Me too. It had a bit of top end compression that let it sound forward but it's not just that Celestion sizzle frequency. It's like a lot of the plugins out there that add a bit of distortion to the highs(inflator type pseudo comps)
Oh man the last brown Mesa OS... it's EXACTLY the tone I've been chasing for years, and still can't achieve it with amp sims + IRs... sad. Very good quality video here sir !
This video is extrememly helpful for me, and let me tell you why. They all sound great. They all sound different. By the time a cab's section is done and switches to a new cab, the sound is clearly drastic and noticeable. By the end of that cab's section I'm thinking to myself "This works but so does that last one" and then the cab changes and it's another drastic change - then I'm stuck in a loop of drastically-changing-approval each time. The lesson for me is don't get stuck on making tone decisions and just do it. If it's a good performance and doesn't obviously sound like crap then it will work.
I think my favorite is the burgundy Mesa Oversized, but the ENGL cab really makes it close. Great video as always, I would love to see a sequel with even more cabinets, maybe Orange, Diezel, Zilla, Peavey, and more. That would definitely make it a challenge for the Oversizes Mesa.
My favorite tones by themselves were both 2x12s, the ENGL and the hesu 4x12. In the mix I thought both 2x12s sounded fine (but not the best), ENGL and the Pertrucci OS. The 5150 made it sound like a dual rec, great for old school death metal and early 2000s. So I think that it would work well, too. The Randall with jaguars is instantaneously recognizable as the Far Beyond Driven tone
Ola great job with this video man! The previous one was also good. Jim Lill started this whole thing on the internet which I really appreciate. Very grateful to all you guys who make tests like this :)
That first Mesa cab truly held its own. The Randall and surprisingly the Fortin (with V30) sounded just too scooped. Greenbacks lacked the low-end punch for this application imo.
It’s crazy how varied speakers and cabs can be! Same with IR’s. I’ve actually been able to make use of the worst amp sims just by running a great IR. BTW the IR you linked for free on the Stevie T amp sim demo is one of my favorites for jamming and practicing. It reacts and feels the way an amp would and sounds huge! I still have all your paid IR’s and own ggd ir packs and it still is one of my go to ir’s!
Agreed, it has a little extra brightness to it, but unlike the other bright cabs, it's not sibiliant, it's a pretty clear and detailed treble crunch instead.
Yeah I thought all the Hesu sounded better than everything else, I just can't decide which one, the demon speaker has a nicer heaviness to it than everything else but I think the v30's have a nice cleanness to them which I prefer, I always prefer a clean metal sound.
The oversized Mesa just has that resonance frequency in a very pleasant spot. Also it sounds alike to the Marshall oversized with Greenbacks - but with a blanket removed. Very intersting comparison!
I’m partial to the Mesa cabs with the v30s, but I’m really impressed by how good the Fortin, Hesu, and Randall cabs sounded. I wouldn’t have thought to use any of those if I was at a store. I would’ve just went for a Marshall 1960 or Mesa since I “know” the sounds. This was a pretty good eye opening video. Thanks for this.
I like the Marshall cab with the greenbacks much more than I expected, maybe even the most. Much less fizzy than a Marshall with V30s. It's also crazy how close the first and last Mesa cabinets sounded.
My favorite metal rig is Engl powerball 2 87 Randall 4x12 straight cab loaded with 2 celestion V 30's and 2 stock 87 jaguar eminence speakers! It sounds absolutely massive!
No surprise, at least to me, how the engl cabinet sounds as such a perfect match for this head - it goes to show how the guys at ENGL did their homework. In the mix, with this config (mic position, filter n shit) the one that sounded better to me, was the Fortin 4 X 12.
I liked them all except the 5150 cab. I just thought that one sounded pretty terrible, tbh. Great video though! Loved being able to hear the different cabs with V30s in them!
I've listened to the video on my home system, with the sub pretty loud. Take home: - The bigger the cab, the better the bass. Oversized are the best! - V30's are the standard for metal for a reason. But shout-out to the Demons on that Hesu!
Man... Randall takes the tone and makes it Dimnbag Darrell. I was always wondering what made it so unique. I know he was using Randall amps but now I feel like the cab was a bigger part of his tone. Sick!
never heard of a t75 speaker. That one takes the cake for me. ive been using mesa cabs and v30s for 20 years but now im gonna try out some t75s. thanks
you should do a bunch of tube and solid-state power amps through a kemper, the mesa boogie 5050, the 290. synergy 5050. SD power stage, fryette 2/90/2 that would be a blast
Thank you for doing this! I just wish I knew that the cabinet has more to do with guitar tone than your amp does like 10 years ago. But hey, at least we have things like Two Notes and Cab IRs out there to swap out to experiment with tone rather than searching for the next amp to buy.
The Randall cab stands out for me. I'd like to see/hear the Harley Benton G412A Vintage in the ring with those beasts. It has 4 Celestion Vintage 30 speakers and the price difference is quite huge. I am curious whether the sound difference is as huge or if it is a pretty good budget option. 🤔
Woof, that Randall...not for me. Mesa/Engl/Marshall are of course great, but the Hesu 4x12 was a real surprise, those Demons sounds awesome!! Any difference between the two Mesa OS cabs besides color?
😅 to be fair they are made with each other in mind. Like a raw Rectifier sounds best threw the Mesa Oversized. A closed and half open 2x12 Mesa Cap together sounds killer too.
Interesting that even the 2 Mesas sound different. My favorite is the Fortin V30 (has more open tone than the other V30s for my ears) and then the Hesu 4x12 with the Demons, and 3rd place for the black Mesa.
I really like how the hesu cabs sounded. Both 2x12s and the 4x12. I recently played through a Marshall 1960 a cab, and I think I like how that sounded more than my Mesa cab haha I still need to hear both side by side tho.
All the cabs sound so unique, even though they all have similar speakers (can't say the same ones coz it seems like even the same model of speaker is not consistent over time, I guess the same batch of speakers would all be the same, anyway, I digress...). I really don't have a lot of budget nor space to have all these unique sounds available to me which increases the value of IR packs made by people like Mikko, Kalthallen, Luan Albani, Seacow etc. very appealing because they do indeed sound great and I feel like they can provide what I need in vareity at no cost in physical space in my small room.
Hi Ola really enjoy your videos. I do have a question for you out of the amplifiers and guitars you have used which is your favorite setup and what would you recommend for someone who is looking to get a amp?

the randall instantly sounded like dimebag

Oh man the last brown Mesa OS... it's EXACTLY the tone I've been chasing for years, and still can't achieve it with amp sims + IRs... sad. Very good quality video here sir !
I love the jaguars. Immediately reminded my of Dime's tone.
My favourite was the Black Mesa 4x12 but that Hesu Demon really surprised me

I was feeling the Engl 4x12. Had a little more gnarl to the tone.
That first Mesa cab truly held its own. The Randall and surprisingly the Fortin (with V30) sounded just too scooped. Greenbacks lacked the low-end punch for this application imo.
it is suprising to me how good that 5150 iconic cab sounds, for that small price it is amazing

I love the work you put into this bro THANK YOU!
The Hesu 2x12 T75 has something special about it, the V30's as good as they are just dont quite stack up against it.
Agreed, it has a little extra brightness to it, but unlike the other bright cabs, it's not sibiliant, it's a pretty clear and detailed treble crunch instead.
Totally, The Hesu had by far the most character. and that brightness wasn't harsh, but a clarity. Definitely on my shortlist for cabs now.
Yeah I thought all the Hesu sounded better than everything else, I just can't decide which one, the demon speaker has a nicer heaviness to it than everything else but I think the v30's have a nice cleanness to them which I prefer, I always prefer a clean metal sound.
Bingpot! For second place the vintage Marshall/Greenbacker for me.
The 2x12 with the v30s sounded awesome
I thought the ENGL was the crunchiest, the Fortin was the best audio quality, and the Randall was the softest/least powerful
The oversized Mesa just has that resonance frequency in a very pleasant spot. Also it sounds alike to the Marshall oversized with Greenbacks - but with a blanket removed. Very intersting comparison!

Hmm I'd love to hear a mix with the randall and the 5150, for something different from the typical v30 sound
Veil of Maya uses Randall I believe. Their first 3 albums have a very unique sound.
Loving these comparison videos! Would love to see an Orange PPC412 added in some time!
The Marshall 4x12 Oversize w. Greenback 25 Speaker sounded really smooth. Nice!
Maybe a bit too smooth when the amp isn't dialed in to compensate, but it's certainly a very comfortable high end!
Really love this series🔥
Yep, great bass work. Well done, Louise! 😃
I like the Marshall cab with the greenbacks much more than I expected, maybe even the most. Much less fizzy than a Marshall with V30s. It's also crazy how close the first and last Mesa cabinets sounded.
The Hesu 2x12, ENGL, and the first Mesa cab were my favorite ones.

Damn man! Sick tones!
Great shootout. We're some surprises in there.
This demonstration makes it all the more clear how played-out the Vintage 30 sound is. I like literally anything else better at this point.
Might want to tell Ola how "played out" they are because the MESA is his current favorite.
@@dickieradd They kinda did?

Good GOJIRA-like intro riff, Ola!
Oh that Insomnium-esque Fortin / Vintage 30 tone. An IR of that particular sound would send me over the moon!
No surprise, at least to me, how the engl cabinet sounds as such a perfect match for this head - it goes to show how the guys at ENGL did their homework.
In the mix, with this config (mic position, filter n shit) the one that sounded better to me, was the Fortin 4 X 12.
00:18 mesa
01:29 fortin 412

This video is Killer !!! and… it looks Awesome too
That Randall cab just sounded like instant dimebag. Kinda shocked.
I liked them all except the 5150 cab. I just thought that one sounded pretty terrible, tbh. Great video though! Loved being able to hear the different cabs with V30s in them!
Amazing! We need more cab ccomparisons
love so much the Randall and the Marshall Greenback :)
That ENGL 4x12 oversized is a fuckin BEAST
omfg the jag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've listened to the video on my home system, with the sub pretty loud. Take home:
- The bigger the cab, the better the bass. Oversized are the best!
- V30's are the standard for metal for a reason. But shout-out to the Demons on that Hesu!
I was really surprised how awesome the jaguars are!!!
Is “1 Riff/10 Guitars” in the cards, Ola? Love your vids! Keep up the amazing work!🤘🔥
Man... Randall takes the tone and makes it Dimnbag Darrell. I was always wondering what made it so unique. I know he was using Randall amps but now I feel like the cab was a bigger part of his tone. Sick!
Gotta love the scooped Fortin and Randall.
engl amp + engl cab = Perfection

Thanks Ola !
T75! And I like me some Vintage 30 goodness!
damn the hesu v30 212 is so present in the mix! that and the greenback marshall were my favs
The Hesu 2x12 w V30s gave me goosebumps with the Black Mesa OS in for a close second. The others aren't quite my taste.
My faves were the ENGL and the Marshall. Thanks for the video Ola.

Interesting that even the 2 Mesas sound different. My favorite is the Fortin V30 (has more open tone than the other V30s for my ears) and then the Hesu 4x12 with the Demons, and 3rd place for the black Mesa.
The Fortin was my favourite too.
