For sure. And us old guys too. :)
No shit. What's funny is he got the money to buy them from youtube money talking and demonstrating "chugging".
There's a deeper message to this video than what people realize. The cab is literally 80% of the tone.
Yeah i thought that grey cab really just masked the individual nature of each amp. Crazy!
yes of course !!!! 80% + the amp character
That's why I'm adding external jacks to the speakers in my combos. So I can try the different amps with the different speakers from each combo I have. Luckily my main amp, has an, external cab jack so I can, connect whatever(within recommended ohm ratings) to it, which I fully intend to do lol.
I'm actually most curious about how it will sound through my Fender combo because the main amp is just a Monoprice 15w tube combo with the imported Eminence 1x12" speaker. So I want to see how it sounds through the Fender 1x12" setup.
The head will determine how you feel, the cab willl impact what you hear. Then the mic/mixing will also change the final result.
Also mic placement is extremely important. The mix of mics and the placement of them on the speaker itself will set the tone.
The real winner is the black Mesa Recto cab. Made every amp sound its best.
The tan Mesa cabinet sounds considerably better and more rounded than the black Mesa cabinet. And it looks nicer.
I would choose the recto cab also. Jp cab is too young.
The engl cab sounds very very good too
The only difference between the two recto cabs is that the black one has a lot of use and the other one is practically new. It leaves me thinking that the "breaking in speakers" thing is something much more important than it seems.
The new cab is a little piercing on the ears and has a more fizzy tone. The black one has a warmer and more defined sound. Old beaten up V30`s FTW XD
Yep, that cabinet is legendary and considered as Industry Standard for metal tones
Amp comparison time! Have a great Friday everyone!
you too ola
Hey Ola Sir, What model of the Eminence Legends are those? I have had 121s and loved em, 128s and not huge fan, Legends is like the Patriot or Redcoat, they arent models but series, Patriot being American voiced, Redcoats having British voicings and Legends replicating voicing of Legendary speakers 🔊
Engle vs Randall next???
Pleeeeeeeeesssssssse 🤘🏻
Please keep this series going!!! Love the “head to head”!
Thanks , that was really cool! You guys enjoy the weekend,
I was waiting for "and this is what they sound like all together!" :(
Gotta join the onlyfans for that clip!!!
I am led to believe KHE only does 1 amp at a time. I use a Voodoo Lab Amp Switcher to play 4 amps at once.
Like shit... if you've ever tried blending 3 or 4 amps at the same time they just sound like shit unless you dial them just to compliment eachother. Doesnt work. Done it before... not what you think itll be.
As long as you’re playing on the black Mesa cab it almost doesn’t matter what head, it makes each head sound great.
The boosted EVH through that black Mesa cab has to be the meanest thing I’ve heard all week.
The Badlander sounded phenomenal as well.
I think the Badlander is slowly becoming my absolute dream amp. Every video makes me want it more. Almost too perfect.
That Mesa cab is amazing, the evh sounded crushing. Even ola went “wow”
@@kevindavid37 I have a badlander... I used to think my orange was great, but I don't even power it up anymore.
@@kevindavid37 I get you man, I’m more of a 5150/ british voiced amps guy, but that thing sounds fantastic.
I want to try one so bad.
@@davius1911 50W or 100W?
The black Mesa 4x12 just won everything. Oh the amps? Yeah they sound different. But the real MVP is the Black Mesa Oversized 4x12
It’s the exact same as the one next to it other than the finish
@@tommilitello198 that's what the labels on the speakers may say, but they sound really different in my ears
Broken in speakers vs new speaker that aren’t broken in
Thats not new news though. Os mesa cabs always sound good.
JP-2C and the EL34 5150 for me!
It did give the chugs a bit of a ring in the upper registers, but a good one.
Same. Holy fuck are they tasty sounding amps, the EL34 with no boost on the red channel could melt faces off
Amen!!! Fully agree
For me too.
Same for me. Sounded freaking disgusting! 😤♥️
Peavy 5150 through the Black Mesa or the ENGL was absolutely fantastic to listen to.
100%
Yup, still King of the Hill for me for that sound. Just has this low, mean grunt to it. The EVH was more clear or articulate per se, but the Peavey was shooting spite and anger out of those speakers.
Personal notes:
5:22 - EVH 5150
7:53 - Peavey 5150
6:02 - Dual-Rectifier
The Badlander sounds brutal here. I never understood why some people complained about the Badlander and said that it didn’t have enough gain or whatever when it came out. It has more than enough gain and never gets flubby or less defined with high gain. Honestly it’s better than all the previous rectifier amps.
And if Ola Englund likes the Badlander, then you know it’s good!
That's it! New segment... HEAD-TO-HEAD with Ola!!!
The 30 year old 5150 holding its own against the young pups
Best two amps: evh 5150, mesa badlander
Best two cabs: black mesa, that engl
agree, liked the EVH and Engl together
5150 with the Engl smoked!
Completely agree!
5150 with black Mesa Cab! Still my favorite sound after 20 years^^
I think I saw a tear drop on that ENGL hiding behind him in the dark. Other than that, every amp sounded fantastic to me. The black MESA cab won in terms of cabinets.
Dude! Dude! I thought the exact same!! So left out!
The ENGL destroyed all other cabs if you ask me.
@@Synathidy agreed i was wondering if something as wrong with my ears by looking at the comment section but the engl crushed hands down
@@Synathidy nope ! We all have different preferences, right ? Imho both Mesa cabs won, especially the black one. The Engl sounded good but didn't quite wow me as much. The Marshall sounded the worst, it really needed Greenbacks
Call my crazy but that ENGL cab was incredible!! Loved it.
I tried calling, but it went straight to voicemail
@@Sticky_Tea lolol
I said the same thing as I watched!
Love the engl cab sounding, which is very dark and heavy in my opinion!!!!
Totally. It had very good lows and tons of punch.
That ENGL cab sounded best with each head. sounds massive!!
And usually cost 300-400$ less than the mesa boogies
Lol
It sounds as good as the Mesa to me. But I’m old and don’t have the best hearing! Lol
@ola England my wife is next to me in hospital currently in labor…and I’m watching your vid right now loll what better to waste time while the baby takes her time coming out.
Congrats man!
@@OlaEnglund all the way from New York! Lol and thanks brother! 🤘
Call me old fashioned, but the Peavey with the black Mesa for me. Sounded awesome and full with, or without the overdrive. Runner up probably the Badlander with the tan Mesa cab. It had more attack.
It sounded like the Marshall cab was out of phase in this video. Those Eminence speakers sounded great in one of the other comparison videos.
The XL Mesa cab always seems to sounds the best in his videos.
@@colinp446 it works well with his sound. When you’re comfortable with certain equipment you’re always going to get a solid tone out of it.
Sounds like some of the speakers are out of phase in the Marshall Cab
Thought it was mic placement but damn, you're right! Good call.
Yeah or it's blown. It sounds terrible!
There is definitely something ...'amiss' with the Marshall cab. Maybe it was the mic position (since it was the only cab with a left mic'd speaker).
I thought maybe the speaker he was micing wasn't working and it was hearing an adjacent speaker. I've had that happen a few times when recording. or maybe the marshall has a stereo input and he might have missed that but he's micing the wrong side.
@@codycreepcore Good point, hopefully Ola will check it and do another video. That said, the Engl was my fave cab. Headripper.
Nothing like the sound of chugs in the morning
Butt chugs too 🧐
nothing like chugs at 11:00pm
@@TastyChevelle you know it
The EVH amp is my fav, the high end but also clarity between each note is definitely what I’m looking for.
Agreed that note separation sounds super crisp
The only thing missing was right after you explained what equipment you were going to use WAS,
The Kool Aid Man busting through the curtain saying Ooooooohhh Yeeeeaah!!! 🤘
@Sour Diesel, Sounds like a job the Macho Man could Handle with a few Slim Jim’s 🤘
They all sound great with the ENGL cab except the JP2C sounds great with its original Mesa cab!
I love this “head to head” series!
Really let’s us hear all the different characters between the amps back to back! Please do more of these.
Yes! Been waiting for another one of these. Good move on getting the floor controller. Thanks for adding mics to all the cabs. You are solidifying the chug throne now! Plugins are cool but this in the room power is niiiice! I like them all. The boost brings out the anger of the heads.
That black mesa cab sounds so good. Thought it sounded similar to the Engl which was brutal too. All the amps sounded killer. The green channel on the 5150 and blue on the evh are underated especially with a boost.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video!! It was so eye opening for me. I’m in the market for an amp right now & I was looking at the Badlander but I was always under the assumption that the majority of your tone comes from the amp, then the guitar & lastly the speakers. I would have never imagined that the speakers are the number 1 factor in shaping your tone!!
Give a like its a huge arrangement . Took lot of time and labour. It deserves a like.
This is exactly the kind of comparison I like to see.
So - all amp heads ruled, but man for my ears that EVH through Mesa black + ENGL slays.
I really liked the peavey and engl.
Wow! This amp switching tool is really a big help when making purchasing decisions. Thanks for this new segment man.
Nice one! I really liked the EVH through the Mesa recto cab. The badlander sounded awesome too. You should do more of these with all kinds of different setups. Really like this one.
5150 is my fave through the recto cab, its not the chuggiest of the lot, but I like its classic metal (IE soldano) tones.
The Mesa rig sounds crazy good. Favorite cab for sure, the Badlander is a killer amp. I own the baby version(25w) and it's 95% tone of the largest brothers but still has the killer Cab sim and internal load for silent recording.
I just picked it up as well. killer amp!
Love your videos Ola. This video shows again that the cab is the most important part in the signal chain
I like this video. I've watched it several times. Like listening to the different amps back to back like this.
Engl was the cab for me. Amp was badland, cheers!
Engl for sure
Think I'm leaning that way, also.
Ola, the Head to Head series is awesome, hope there's more of these! So many people would love to compare amps like this but don't have access to them.
In THIS demo, to me it's a tossup between the EVH and Badlander. EVH was a bit more clear and aggressive, Badlander was just a bit warmer and more mellow in a good way.
All the amps were fantastic though.
And yep, agree with other folks that the real star of the show was the black Recto 4x12.
Awesome comparison video. No bs, just straight through the specific options being compared. I was surprised by a couple of things (other than the Marshall being ill suited to certain combinations), like the fizz being a lot more audible in a surprising way on the Petrucci through it's own cab vs the Badlander cab. Thanks again Ola!
This is the best Comparison Vid I have seen in ages!! Not only is an awesome flex but it really shows the different tones and traits of the Amps.....HELLYEAH!! 6/10
The JP Boogie beats all. Right out of the box it's the best sounding Amp imo.
I was more impressed with how different each cabinet sounded !
Was very different from cab to cab
Well done my good sir! Even if I somehow managed to accumulate all those amps & cabs, I don't think I'd have the patience to set up all this.
This is the most crazy guitar-related video series I've ever seen, holy crud.
Man, those Peavy 5150s still sound good as hell. The EVH does have a little bit more oomf though.
The ENGL cabinet sounded incredible!
Outstanding video! Enjoyed every second of it!
Had to come back and revisit this video. All I got from this is that I definitely need a Mesa Cab in my life, and that the Badlander and that EVH both need to show up in my collection.
The ENGL sounded the best.
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one that thought that
Engl with the 5150 was my pick
This is why sound is so personal. I appreciate the growl and dead almost doomy tone of those setups. I dont mean like doom metal or anything like that. Just the way the tone feels to me. The rhythm sound is tight and aggressive. That said when playing segued into single note lines or legato playing i find amps that excel in that area dont please me tonally in other parts of song. I like a mesa recto eq'd for more of a wild rock sound or a marshall with a boost. In the last 4 years ive really come to appreciate Jerry Cantrells dirt and facelift sound. Heavy but sings
Fr
With the badlander.
“The red channel is too much I think”
*Proceeds to create the most brutal tone*
It's the Mesa boooogie and V firty!
The clarity of the 6L6 Power Tubes in the Peavey 5150, along with that chunky gain is why I Love Peavey, and have a Valveking here at home, and I use a Peavey XXX in the studio, played and recorded through a Marshall Vintage 1960 JCM Handwired Cabinet with Vintage Greenback 30's. Awesome Video Ola!!🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thanks for this, Ola. I have a block letter 5150, but don’t have a cabinet for it. After your comparison, I may need to consider an Engl cab, which never would have occurred to me. Nice video.
Olas face is the best whenever he switches to the Marshall cab 😂
I’d like to hear this test with a stock 1960B (Celestion G12T-75s). I actually prefer the sound of a Recto with those cabs.
i didn't noticed it becouse i was making the same face everytime he switched to the Marshall cab
@@elsinbarba6536 Ola wouldn’t have been making that face if he was using a 1960B with the stock Celestion G12T-75 speakers in it.
@@AdrianNWB those speakers are ehhhhh...which is why mesa cabs seemed to get more popular in the 90s. The tsl era was hard on marshall. Their products werent great at that time. I think vintage 30s are about perfect all around unless youre just going to stand around and chug like this video. Then you might as well get a 2x15 cab.
@@BigTyronie I personally love 75s. I will say that they need some serious volume to sound their best, though. I mean, a Recto boosted with a Tube Screamer into a stock 1960B is the guitar sound on Nevermore’s Dead Heart in a Dead World. That album to my ears is the PERFECT Recto tone.
Haven't even watch It yet, AND It already has my like.
That old 5150 holding its own! Sounds like a beast through the Engl and Mesa Cabs
Great video. I appreciate the time setting up this comparison, very informative!
Damn that peavey.
Looking at the comment. Am i the only one who likes the peavey the most.
Edit
I love Ola face when played through marshall cabs like there's so much pain lol
Peavey and Engl for me
Peavey is amazing. Next is the EVH for me. Unreal tone
EVH + Engl Cab is the hero here.
Marshall cab sounds budget with everything.
This is premium content. The rapid switching really allows me to hear the differences clearly. Thanks from a cabinet hunting metalhead lol
The definitive metal amplifier test ! Congrats from Brasil, Ola 🤟🏻
All are excellent. But Peavey 5150 is the pick. It's the people's amp, high quality & affordable
Dude.......I really liked this comment..... it's so true. Although I am an admitted Boogie fan boy, I agree with what you said here.
@@nickyounger1368 thanks man! I'm a Boogie fan too but I can't sell a kidney or reduce my little girls holiday funds. That won't work. Hehe
The cab with Eminence Speakers in it sound almost like it’s just the room picking it up. The V30 cabs sound much more forward and in your face.
I had a Krank cab with these speakers and you need way more middle than with the V30s. That way they sound more in your face.
Ola thank you so much for this video, I love it when you do videos comparing suff together its really helpful for people like me that can't access all these bad ass amps. Keep up the good work, cheers form Canada.
The ENGL is ready for war! What an awesome cab. Love these videos.
The Peavey is just unbeatable
@@joshuaperdue6883 Yep, came to comment with basically the same response.
Listening to all of these guitars tracked and isolated is all very well for us enthusiasts, but in the grand scheme of things, those minor inflections in tone would either 1. Get lost in the mix, or 2. Be far too subtle for your average listener to actually pick out in the first place. Most players, including myself, could save a large chunk of cash by just playing through the 5150, without ever really noticing the minor differences in tonality to its much more expensive rivals.
Especially with the Engl! It killed !
damn that mesa oversized is the real winner here
The older I get the more I really dont like to say I have one that I like the best, they each have their place and my mood changes quite a bit. One day a Marshall might be my go to the next it might be a Peavey or Mesa Boogie. All those amps you have are awesome, great video!
Yessir. I have a line6 100w combo with 12s and its surprisingly fun to practice on. But when tone itch needs scratched i use my 100w stiletto head and cab or my new dslhead and marshall 4x12. Im reeeeally digging that right now. It sounds great! The origin 20 with the preamp modded to 1985jcm800 spec is probably what id have done if i could find an amp guru to do the work.
We are really happy that you chose our mics for that awesome comparison. Greetings from Vienna :)
Can we get an “all four at the same time” video? 🤘
"Head to Head" made me laugh coffee up my nose lol
Killer comparison! Thank you Ola 🤘
Love when you say, "V-Firties". Makes them sound even better than the V-Thirties. Thanks for all the awesome videos Ola!
I was surprised that there was a bit of difference in tone between the two Mesa cabs. Then again, the black Mesa cab has probably had a lot more time to break in compared to the brown one.
Also not the exact same mic placement probably
When I first started mic’ing cabs I was surprised at how different speakers of the same model can sound. Even within the same cab where the speakers have the same break-in they’ll have some differences.
Future suggestion: See if you can get that Marshall Cab to sound crushing w the right head. So far that has been the weakest cab in both of your head to head videos.
It just needed more volume and some bass
I think I actually dig the Badlander with the second Mesa cab the best out of all of the sounds. Excellent demo!
5150 and the black mesa ftw. Badlander and black mesa for a close second. Great video man 👍
I wanted to see how a Marshall JVM or a DSL would stack against those beasts
Almost the exact same with only the slightest of differences like this video. Lol. The only thing that really made a difference was the Marshall cabinet.
@@MisterRorschach90 a jvm and DSL sound NOTHING like these amps especially unboosted.
@@resistorstudios exactly! And it seems Ola heard my request!
For a future FAQ: For folks who live in apartments with thin walls and don't want to get evicted, what's a good cab that sounds good on high gain at pretty low volumes (without headphones)? Every other video I've seen only discusses amps, not the cabinets, even though everyone agrees that the cab makes up a large part of the final sound.
Not sure if you figured it out, but the best setup would be a 2x12 with your speaker of choice (v30s for most people) and either a mini head like the 6505MH (20 watts) or the various engl and mesa ones, or a full size head with an attenuator.
For your situation it sounds like you already have a pretty high wattage amp, so an attenuator; while expensive, will allow you to preserve the tone found at wall-shaking volumes while playing as quietly as you wish. They get pricey, up to $1000+, but cheaper ones can be found for $300~, not recommended to go cheaper than that usually.
Ola has always been my favorite guitarist on UA-cam. Who else could I watch chug for 15 min? Who would be brave enough to chug for 15 min?? Not many
Head 2 Head is an AWESOME and catchy name for a series of vids 🔥👏
Check out Kyle Bull 😉👍🏻
The ENGL cab sounds so monstrous…is the best cab from them IMO…respects to the Oversized Rectifier tho…we gotta respect the legends
Please get a cab with eminence dv77's for the next one of these
I love this content, I would love to see more of it!!! Buying amps is difficult because you can’t use an amp switcher to compare and contrast… I own a JP2C with a Mesa 4x12 and I really love the Idea of adding an Engl amp to my arsenal and your “head to head”/cab to cab comparisons has shown me that it is the correct choice based on the amplifiers in your videos. I would love to see the Engl Savage mark 2 and an Engl 4x12. Other amps I want to see besides the amps shown is Laney Ironheart with Cab, Rev Generator 120 w/cab and maybe PRS Archon with matching cabs, maybe throw in some 2x12. Please keep these coming!!! Also small amplifiers as well!!!
Awesome comparison. Would love to see a video where you set up the amps to your preferred settings and do the same again.
Suggestion: distortion pedal comparisons. But the amp comparisons are awesome.

The good ol Peavy XXX should of been a contender.
It rocks with the engl
Love my JSX (which I understand was what the XXX is based on)
@@chacha134 you got that backwards...the xxx was rediddled for the joe satriani amp. The xxx sounds waaaay different. I loved my xxx. I only sold it because i stopped playing enough to have heads sitting around. Im rebuilding my amp collection. Ive got a line 6 combo(just a practice amp 100w 2x12) stiletto deuce with matching cab and a dsl20h and a marshall 4x12 thats optimized for that head. The dsl is actually my favorite soundwise lol. Its not much quieter than the 100w mesa when its cranked. Im doing a hotrodded marshall sound with the dsl. Its eqd very modded jcm800ish.
Thanks Ola night and day with all the amps and boxes .
Food for thought .
Thanks for this Ola, ditching my Marshal can asap. This way eye opening.
would LOVE if you added the "peavey invective" head and cabinet
To me those are ALL 90's amps really ... nothing truly contemporary
