My 65 year old english teacher has recently started a unit for us on advertisements. I saw it as a good opportunity to be able to share my knowledge with her, so I wrote her a thorough and detailed essay covering memes, meme value, and their role in the advertising and business world. The essay covered topics such as chips ahoy, raid shadow legends, and the Whopper Whopper Whopper ad from burger king. I am very proud of it as she then began discussing memes within a lesson in class the following session

As someone who studying advertising and propaganda at the university, I also question and think about this new strategy of infiltrating through memes to sell products, especially on Twitter. It would be nice to see your perspective on this, you don't find much arround about it

@@Henqueri494 I think that with todays day and age, silly and goofy advertisements are the best as minimal effort is required because the internet will do the advertising for them. There is only 2 BK whopper whopper whopper commercials, the old and new one. I have never seen either of them "In the wild" However, the internet spread it throughout like wildfire, which presumably increased BK's sales and attention dramatically.

When you look at successful offline advertisement, one interesting strategy is the one pursued by collision repair and body shop outfits. They put their name up on billboards but don't usually include their phone number. They don't want to be called. What they want you to do is to tell the tow truck driver who comes to take your car after it breaks down or gets in an accident to take it to that specific shop because you've heard of them. I think it is similar way the flex tape ad is engineered so that it plays for free in your brain. You see something in your house start to leak, they don't care where you buy flex tape from or when they care that you do it and that it will be top of mind when you're at the home improvement store looking for something to fix a leaky gutter right before closing time in a rainstorm.

One thing I've realized in retrospect is that as a kid I was basically surrounded by advertisements-the Lego and Toys'R'Us catalogs, cable TV commercials, the various kids' magazines I subscribed to because of those commercials (like Zookids and Highlights)-but none of it really registered or bothered me the way ads do now. In fact, in the case of the catalogs, I would happily spend an hour effectively just reading ads. It was only during my adolescence when I got on the Internet (and my parents got rid of cable) that ads started to bother me. Now I use adblockers religiously, can't stand cable television, and occasionally think about ditching Windows because Microsoft keeps putting ads in their OS and I kind of hate it. And yet on top of that, I'm still susceptible to ads, or at least to the push towards consumerism. Sure, it's PC parts or nice clothes these days instead of toys, but sometimes I'll seriously consider buying a product, decide against it, then look back a month later and wonder what I was so worked up about. I don't quite get how I could swim in ads as a kid and not really notice or care. Perhaps 8 year-old me was intolerably consumerist, albeit mostly for Legos.
I think that ads prey extensively on the idea of an unfulfilled need or a radical improvement to one's life, when in reality the fulfillment they provide is the pleasure of buying something. There's an implicit call to action in most advertisements to the effect of "Buy this to become happy!", when the happiness tends to fade approximately 7 seconds after opening the Amazon package. I've found that usually the things I purchase make the most difference when motivated by someone's example or recommendation. Buying Hollow Knight because my best friend recommended it, or getting a decent kitchen knife after using my grandfather's knives-these were some of the best purchases I ever made. Most of my impulse buys of Steam Sale games or kitchenware at Walmart? Not nearly so much. Likewise, many of my purchases regarding electric guitars and accessories were motivated by reviews-and in retrospect most of them I didn't need.
Thus, I wonder if a good response to ads can be cultivated by asking before you purchase something: a), whether you can articulate a real need or deficiency that the item you want to purchase would fix; b), whether you have good reason to believe the item would fill the need (eg, by experience or trusted recommendation). If the answer to one or both of those is no, then you should reconsider. Of course, some spontaneity has to be allowed, especially regarding food; but for the things we take as our hobbies or interests, holding back the impulse to acquire more (especially when we try to keep up with the latest developments, such as with PCs) is probably better both for our wallets and our sanity.

I think you are right. The reason reviews (more like freelance ads) are so convincing is they look kind of like a recommendation from a human, which is what you really want when considering a product. Seeing ads for something mostly makes me think about it more, since I take forever when considering when to get something or not. I try my best to act slow, and do enough research that I hopefully find real people voicing their opinions. If you find yourself wanting something cause of an ad, that is a good sign you probably don't need it. You should find real issues in your life and try to address them, and also the answer won't always be an object. And yeah hobbies are harder to regulate cause more excitement.. You are very relatable.

Gonna be honest modern ads are scary: i got true "my" (actual money i worked for) money relatively small time ago. I quickly bought Portal pack few other games on steam and... "Wait. I need to fucking stop." And made a rule. "One 5$ game per 3 month". This way i stop myself from buying all games that i seen ads of and thought they were cool. Oh and strict F2p policy in "free" games - i know that if you make even slightest purchase there, you won't be able to stop...

Like... House burning down. with a man looking at a photo of his family "Don't forget to check your fire alarm"

imho I think it's more people are happy the money is finally going to a place they feel it would be better used regardless of the reason. You're favorite small creator often has more need for that cash than the billion dollar advertising company trying to shove products down everyone's throats and since pressing the forward button to skip the sponsor or using sponsor block is so easy to do they just don't care about the add itself anymore. We have pushed advertising to a point where it's no longer as effective as it once was unless you start diving into unethical territory or using psychological mind hacks, which if you ask me is heading across that little line of ethics I mentioned so they're both the same thing in my book.

raid, much like grub hub, benefits from their uniqueness turning them into memes. raid is cynical. they might as well be asking you directly to give them money, and it'd probably work out about as well for them. grub hub has terrible advertisements. they're so bad, it's hilarious. people play raid, or buy from grub hub, because of the meme. sometimes people end up deciding it's not too bad for them, or they just like the social image of being associated with unusual stuff. if everyone did it all the time, people would get tired of it quickly. granted, autistic people such as myself are immune to propaganda. dude, just don't pay attention to the advertisement, it's that simple.

As someone who has studied marketing, I agree that advertisers are always looking for new places to put ads. One of the basic things I was taught in my introductory course was that as more forms of ad space become saturated, it gets harder and harder to stand out amongst them. You should thus always try to think creatively of new spaces you can place ads that will stand out and appeal to target audiences.
Want to market bicycles? More cities are taking the initiative to build specific bike paths in their sprawl. Try putting bike ads on the route they are traveling. Competitors already doing that? Try placing them on the ground if possible as bikers tend to look downward when biking so they might notice ads their better. If it succeeds, pretty soon the competition will start doing the same thing, then you will not be able to look at your feet without seeing an ad.

i feel like the oversaturating, over the top, hellscape of advertisement will eventually create a "Call to arms" Against ads or at the very least lost of impact as consumers start to just get annoyed no matter what at ads
Then perhaps, an age where ads are scaled back a lot. Repeating the cycle
Finding new ways to interest buyers to buy your things might not be one big crescendo of advertising hell

It's kinda crazy that, without really knowing the concepts of memorability and CtA before watching this, I was already thinking of Flex Tape before you even said the name or showed the saw and boat. This was a really great video, and I know it's going to make me think a lot every time I see an ad. I didn't even know drone advertising was a thing, either! Also, I appreciate you putting in the time to put that nice message in the QR code. Thanks for being and making awesome content! I can't wait for the shotgun video :)

The animations are smooth and satisfying, you can see that a lot of work goes into the mood of each frame, and you even included an easter egg in the qr code. I also appreciated the deep dive into ad practices; I never knew that ads are really designed that way to trigger stuff in the brain, and you explained everything really clearly and in a super interesting and engaging way.

Blocking all ads has led to never experiencing that feeling of frustration as my time was lost to a brand I either didn't give two fucks about or which I was already interested in. If anything, I despise the brands that are trying to promote themselves to me this way. Of course I can't get rid of the memorability of their campaigns, hence why I simply avoid and restrict their appearance.
How do people even live with ads... I for one could never go back to wasting my time this way again. Not even talking about the memory waste.

To be honest, I have some kind of adblock in my brain. I don't register any informations when I watch an ad, just want to skip it and then I immediatelly forget about it. Its not because you can link some catchy music or a logo with a brand that you gonna buy their products.
14:55 "Science is not always this answer": I don't like where its going
Before knowing the magic "Sponsorblock" (omg I love this thing extention som much), I watched about probably 300 videos containing Raid Shadow Legends ads, I never even wanted to download this shit app, you can tell by the gameplay and the stupid arguments that the game is shit. Watching this ad 300 times makes me want even more to NOT download the app. This shit try to bruteforce into my phone lmao, wtf no.
For all the sponsor segments I saw in my life, It worked on me only once or twice because I found the product actually cool (like funny tshirts and a pair of glasses) and then I search online for more informations if I really want this.
Maybe I'm the exception ? Maybe, all this ad market target just the big whales ? All I can tell is that I don't found ads this problematic, if people actually use their brains there is no real problem.
PS: Sponsorblock is good guys, try it out lmao

Because of that, I don't fully trust the words about myself that I am about to write, but I've always tried to go out of my way to NOT play any mobile games that I've seen an advertisement for. I've also always tried to ignore and block ads every time it's possible, like turning off the volume and looking away until the ad is over, falsely reporting it for something so that it goes away without playing out, or just straight up used adblock.
I absolutely hate ads. That's why I do it. I know I'm not immune. It's impossible to never get affected by ads. Even so I will always do everything in my power to be affected as little as possible by them.
