    I see this opinion thrown around so much and it's extremely misleading. Uninvited criticism, vitriol, and purposefully ignoring the intent of the art doesn't help anyone to grow. You don't go to art school and have your soul absolutely crushed on a daily basis by your teachers. If you want to 'help artists grow' then you need to provide constructive feedback WITHOUT the unnecessary childish drama. There's a difference between being blunt and just being an asshole.

I go over to the drawing tutorial for a male body, and the drawing is of a fairly athletic, muscly guy. No hate comments whatsoever

Still, they called my art "misogynistic and unethical", and idk, I feel like a lot of people just don't understand stylization. Art doesn't have to be photorealistic. I'm going to copy and paste a comment I left elsewhere, because I think this is something more people need to hear. This is something taught to me in my upper years of psychology education. I hope this helps you to not overthink or doubt your art too much!
      "Drawing her this way isn't about Western cultural issues at all. This is an ignorant way to view the situation. Let me explain.
      This artist clearly explained that she tried to exaggerate her secs appeal, which Britney was known for. So, she made her have a narrow waist and curvy hips.
      Now, in every culture on earth, men are attracted to a certain waist-to-hip ratio, where the waist is quite small compared to the hips. When something is a cultural universal, this means we know it must be evolutionary, not culturally-bound. There is an ideal waist-to-hip ratio because humans (particularly men) evolved to have visual cues to fertility. You can easily search this up if you don't want to take my word for it.
      So to exaggerate Britney's secs appeal, the artist would not draw her as a square. Women also intuitively understand waist-to-hip ratio and what signifies in the human psyche. She is a good artist BECAUSE she understands hpw to speak to the human psyche.
      Men liking that body type, women drawing that body type to convey attractiveness... there's nothing wrong with it. It's not "the patriarchy", unless every cultural and our very minds are "the patriarchy". There is nothing we need to overcome here. Thinking otherwise is to despise what it means to be human."

      yeah that's definitely present in a small part of our community of progressives (our referring to me and mine IDK about you) I get it, I was a passionate teenager once too, but twitter hadn't trained us to howl at the moon yet so my beef with unrealistic character bodies and stuff was done via forum posts so way more time to think things through. (doesn't mean I was always perfectly nice or always right) definitely throttled the hatred spigot. Doesn't help that America and the south in particular (fuck georgia, it sucks here) train people to go for perfection at any cost, so when those people finally learn about not shitting on minorities they attempt perfect records and no matter who you are or what you're doing trying to be perfect or enforce perfect will make you toixc, politics, cooking, hugs, doesn't matter, chasing perfect will hurt you and others.
      That said I saw this before watching the video and it's been playing this entire time and a soundbite caught my attention "they're not trying to make anything better they're just sowing hate" is something that is so incorrect it hurts my soul. Doing the wrong thing for the right reasons is something that has to be called out and corrected because it'll hurt people but doing the wrong things doesn't mean your reasons are wrong or invalid. Like this whole thing might be a nontroversy (I'm not super educated on the particular subject matter, and don't see anything weird about the art myself) but the more this video goes on the more I'm hearing a message along the lines of "these people's criticisms are wrong (which is debatable cause that's subjective, but in this case I agree with this premise) coma, there's nothing wrong with female representation in media" it's like B does not follow from A at all, in fact B is an important piece of why A is an issue. oppression either breaks someone (this is about society at large and in no way talks about the two people in this video) or inflames their passion to fight it. you're not gonna hear from the broken, and the fighters that aren't balls of rage and bitterness (a state I call half-broken, from personal experience) aren't really spending their time on twitter. *shrug* hope that makes sense, which I had more than an explanation of the what and why I think is going on, like how to stop the people with good hearts from being toxic lunatics on twitter. Unfortunately the only way I've ever managed to reason with someone like that (a homophobe in this case) it was one on one personal discourse, and twitter basically makes that impossible, cause it doesn't generate traffic that can be sold for ads.

      @@hornylink One on one is definitely better, because you can actually talk to someone and understand their perspective. Hate just creates more hate, but when you can talk with respect for one another goos things happen.
      But on the point of perfection, because I have some things I've learned over the years. I grew up in Washington though, so a very different culture. But it all stems from the translation of the Bible and how Christ commands us to be "perfect." But a more accurate translation is whole, and then people's reaction is "oh, so perfect means whole." 🤦 No. Perfect, at least the way we use it is inaccurate and impossible, I would say that not even God is perfect because perfection is stupid. Look at nature, some of the most beautiful things are broken of imperfect and we shouldn't change them for the world. We are also all different and unique, how can you measure perfection when we are all different and have a different potential? But we do each have great potential to continuously become better at the things we do, forever, but if we are always learning and improving perfect does not exist and is stupid to look for. But we are creatures of growth and seek to learn and improve, that is good and healthy. For example, in art, what does perfect even mean? That your art looks exactly like reality? Obviously, no. So now I like to say I'm working towards my potential, still doesn't embody what I'm getting at, but it's closer and more personal. It also depends on your self worth, but knowing that everyone has unlimited potential then this perspective could help your self worth. Trying to be perfect has always bugged me and is pretty toxic, so I just wanted to share my experience with it as well. Hope that helped and made sense...

But it is not my job to care so much that I feel entitled to bitch about it on their platforms in front of their followers, patrons, or clients. All that would do is make me look like an ass, waste their time, and negative feedback hardly ever warrants improvement- especially if the criticized don't see their "flaws" as flaws (you know, because art is subjective).
    There's certainly some big names that I stopped following due to lack of expanding their subjects or their switch from SFW to NSFW (and I follow artist's who do both, but one in particular no longer does SFW at all. I don’t think anyone criticising is talking about realist body proportions but in fact body type. Britney doesn’t have an hourglass to begin with so its not something to exaggerate. She has a sporty toned rectangle shape with wide and in line shoulders waist and hips. This artist is skilled and used to draw many exaggerated stylised body types years back but now seem’s to draw mostly curvy hourglass figures. If it’s what they like then fair, though when drawing a real person it’s only respectful to not morph them into what the artist’s thinks of as an ideal body. I 100% believe this artist is capable of drawing Britney’s body in a sexy exaggerated way but like she said in the video, she prefers drawing curvy bodies (which is highly likely she’s subconsciously feeding into current beauty trends though obviously not her fault as I think we’re all susceptible to it)

    You don't have to. It's your work. If all you want to draw are hyper sexualised women with hourglass figures then do it, it's no one's business to tell you what kind of art you should or shouldn't be making.
    Make all the arguments you want about representation, feminism and body image but the buck stops at artistic freedom in my mind. Turn that ire to big companies and media who force male actors to dehydrate for 3 days before shooting and women to starve themselves and then photoshop them even thinner because it's still not enough.

      They just want to have jack of all trades , master of none. Heck the artist who designed chun-li from street fighter said he has a hard time drawing figure facing the left. Some artists are known for only drawing women, or only men too. Hah, people like this are the ones who think drawing is easy, maybe they should start drawing what they think should be drawn then maybe they won't need to force others to abide to their wrapped standards.

      I hate it when people go into comment sections and say “oh my gash, you are SooOO talented! Like, I can’t even draw a circle”
      And they start acting like art is impossible and only few “chosen ones” can be good at it.
      It makes me SCREAM in my head “JUST FREAKING PRACTICE ITS NOT THAT HARD!!!”
      It always seems to be THAT kind of compliment, it’s never “wow the colors are really pretty, wow I love the ways the eyes look” it’s always “ UGH your sooo talented! I can’t even do that!”

      I mean it depends on the work. You don't need to have a ton of diverse body types in every work. As an example, if I'm drawing superhero comics about people who spend their time training and fighting they should probably all be pretty muscular, or at least a minimum level of fit. If I'm drawing a futuristic society like the one in WALL-E then everyone should probably look overweight.
      If I'm just drawing for myself, I'll draw what I PERSONALLY find visually appealing. It will tend towards an idealized body type. The fact that most people draw this is a reflection of what most people find visually appealing, it isn't to be exclusionary. There are artists out there who only draw heavier bodies, and that's totally fine. They like the aesthetic. If you let people draw what they want and enjoy you may not see a ton of diversity, but that's ok! There will always be people who do enjoy other body types, so follow the artists who draw in styles that appeal to you!

Drawing is not easy and each piece you make takes a lot of time, so having people assume things about you and your work and discouraging you is just so unfair and shattering. Shame on them. Anyone who's trying to tell you what not to do while drawing should not be allowed around artists. The entire point is to be creative, you can literally do whatever you want.

    These people don't know anything about character design. Look at Disney, Pixar, any of these cartoons you see on tv. The characters are all stylized and often have very exaggerated features. The point on Lizzo is a great one. This is a good picture, and there isn't anytihng disrespectful about it. All of the fundamentals are spot on: composition, line work, color palette, shading, and even the stylized proportions are done well.
    You aren't doing anything wrong or bad. Keep doing you. Don't stop making art and don't change for anyone else. This was meant to be a fun drawing,, and the picture certainly looks fun and lively. :)

  • @rsydw
    @rsydw 2 роки тому +135

    So, just because the market created a sexist "ideal body type" - wich changed over time, btw - nobody can draw using some characteristics that "belongs" to that? In order to beat an "evil" pattern established we need to create another and punish the person that doesn't follow this new one like a jihadist? Sexism doesn't own things, it uses them.
    Sexy characters are sexy characters, is a concept, not a sexism's tool, the problem is in the perception of who sees it. If a sexy character "belongs" to sexism, then it should be banned, but then, sex should be banned from everywhere. Sex is part of life, the problem is not representing it, is not drawing sexy things, the problem is in the sexist mindset. If didn't exist sexist people, no one would have any problem with that drawing. So, to "fight" against sexism wouldn't be better to educate people about it? 'cause sexy things, unique artstyles, provocative drawings, exagerated figures, etc. can exist in a feminist world, the only difference would be that everybody would understand that it's not reallity and nobody should strive to achieve that kind of body, that it is just a stylized drawing.
    The world is not manichean, it is way more complex than that and art can be a lot of things at the same time, depends on the context and the receiver values. It's not like "this is sexist" and "this is ok", if it was: who decides these things? If people understand better equality and respect, the unnecessary sensualization will be less used to sell things, but in art, there is no such a thing, art is necessary and unnecessary, is just self expression, no one really needs it to stay alive, but is essencial to live.
    Now, a person that clearly already cares about it can be judging herself everytime she starts drawing, limiting her creativity, and, at the same time, giving bad example to everybody that thinks that representation, and things like that, is stupid and everyone who cares about it is radical that doesn't accept a different point of view... way to go to make the world a better place e more acceptable to diversity.

    • @rsydw
      @rsydw 2 роки тому +18

      @@stevelandon7032 interesting question, but we need to first make sure we are talking about the same aspect, concept and definition. If we are talking about a non realistic drawing, then organs may not be a concern to the composition. It's about colors, shapes, lines, shadows, emotions, etc. all things inherent to humans, but in a unique way different from reality. If we are talking about body itself, then we know this type of body just doesn't exist in the real world. If we transpose realistic elements to where it doesn't belong then a lot of type of art shouldn't exist. Picasso, Salvador Dali, Tarcila do Amaral, Fernando Botero, Basquiat, Edvard Munch and a lot others shouldn't be allowed to do what they did. If we transpose art to real life, then it's a real problem 'cause it would be a delusion. Industry doesn't own any body type or artstyle, it just misused to sell things and to spread it's values. Like swastika, the symbol itself is ancient, with a lot of different meanings, many conected to religion and positive things and it's still used in some cultures as a symbol of good luck and prosperity. Nazism doesn't own the symbol, just appropriated it in a bad way.

Her portraits of women seem to depict a similar body type, though I noticed that some of her older artwork (I think it was most noticeable around 2017) depicts a lot of different body types and it looked phenomenal! The chubby mermaid drawing is one of my favorite pieces of hers.
    It's natural for artists to find a specific niche and there's nothing necessarily wrong with that. Jackie is free to draw what she likes. Personally, it'd be nice to see her experiment more with her artwork, but she's under no obligation to. This is all only based on artwork she's publicly shown; her personal drawings could be more varied for all I know (though she's under no obligation to share those pieces).
