The sad thing is East Asian artists always been easy targets because they rarely fluent in English. So when their notifications filled with angry messages, they cannot defend themselves because they don’t know how to debate in English.
@@MohammedAgbadi It's really sad. Japanese people tend to be conflict-avoidant so they will often cave and delete, thinking they were wrong especially if they aren't good at english. It's depressing af to see all these white kids dog-pile japanese people and essentially take advantage of the cultural difference in their bullying, then claim to be fighting against racism..
@@SnowShadyLP I went on twitter to check out this drama, turns out it's actually super old and the person is also black. This video is super misleading, the commenter also got lots of harassment (apparently way more than the artist).
The artwork is so cute. A lot of people just don't understand colour theory or colour pallets since this looks more pastel. The characters have brown tones compared to the whiter character who's more pink-ish. Plus the dark background really makes them look brighter. Twitter loves to start things
I swear the only people trying to pick on artists saying they are whitewashing are never even the minority groups themselves. It was a lovely piece of fanart!! I feel bad for the artists getting harassed :(((
That’s how anti-racism and cancel culture works, I guess. It’s always the opposite races/groups getting offended. White people getting offended for black people, abled people getting offended for disabled people, it goes on and so much of the time the actual group is like “Wait, this isn’t an issue we deal with”
I feel like the craziest part of this is that the artist didn't even make them all lighter colors. Some of them actually had darker tones than what they had in the movie. The artist drew them all with a wide range of skin colors, which is *way* more diversifying *and* realistic than just having them all the same "darker" skin tone that the haters seem to want. I don't understand people.
This isn’t art. Where you lighten Simone so much you can’t tell they black. Black Latino never get representation. Every freaking day I see bash of white or pale Latino on media 24/7. Every one who commented has 💯 rights to criticize. As someone who’s am artist and into Japanese art style either example like kawaii that some are extremely pastel or very light.
Why do people that know nothing about a topic feel the need to have a strong opinion on it? They don't even know that Latino isn't a race, or how colouring dark skin tones works, how did they get to the point where they thought they could start insulting people over this if they don't have any experience or research to back them?
@@MohammedAgbadi the thing is I see this on obscured UA-cam comment sections, about things ranging from DID to whether if Levan Polka is by Miku or not 😭
@@TheParagonIsDead what you can describe as Latino race is being mixed Native American with European, which is common in LATAM, but does not describe every Latino. For example in Peru it's common for people to be mixed east Asian, in some countries you'll see more people of African descent, other countries are extremely mixed (like Argentina) and you'll see that you can't say most people look like this or that
Gringo is not a slur. We use it for people who we don't know/strangers. I am latina but I am very pale, people thinking that Hispanic people can ONLY be dark is actually doing a lot worse than good. It honestly really pisses me off. On a side note, I really loved the fact that in Encanto we see Latinos with lighter skin tones.
I literally saw someone on Tiktok (a dark skinned latino/hispanic) literally say he doesn’t believe that lighter-skinned latinos/hispanics experience racism just because their skin as if they’re not from the same culture/race???
I use gringo only with my close friends as a little joke !! My friends and I are all Hispanic and come in variety of colors, some being lighter than others does not make them white.
What annoyed me on this case was I saw some people, again, use color picker tool to “compare” the fanart colors with actual screenshots of the movie to “prove” their whitewash allegation. The problem is, their method really biased. Some of the screenshots were day scenes, some were night scenes. They purposely chose the scenes according to each character’s skin color to make the differences seem extreme & the fanart looks worse. Even if you chose the scenes with a same lightings, you can color pick a forehead or cheeks of a character and they would result different colors. Even on some graphic applications like photoshop, color picker tool has a sampling option to get average color of an area such as 1 pixel, 10x10 pixel, 50x50 pixels, etc… and each setting would result different colors although you pick the same pixel. Maybe the differences not much, but it’s the same slight color differences that they would fuss all over Internet. It’s so frustrating that they would do everything to put down other people online because they want to be a social justice warrior.
And let's not forget that even if the artist used the neutral colors from the art book, it will looks different in someone else's monitor/smartphone/tablet. You have to calibrate like all the appliances in the world to get the same color temperature AND EVEN THEN, each brand has differences (I used to use a Samsung monitor next to a LG and you could notice the color difference). So even all of it, people will find stuff to get mad.
Gen. Question I promise, how do you get the right skin color? I try to do portraits all the time and when I try to eyedrop it’s never right, I’ve full on given up on multiple projects just cause I spent like- 30-40 minutes trying to get it right. I’m struggling :’D
@@Winter0721 Hmmm sorry for the long answer but imagine this, you’re uploading a photo on Instagram, then you find a bunch of filters and you try out one by one, you can observe that the colors of your photo shifted on each different filter, not only the skin, but the hair, clothes, the sky, rocks, etc… but still, all the colors on the photo look cohesive despite they are not the same color as original. And that’s also what happened when you draw. When an artist have drawn a lot. They will unconsciously develop their own “filter” too. Even you might already have it too. You can try by putting all of your recent paintings side by side, you might notice some sort color “harmony”. Maybe because you like these specific watercolor paints, or like that color swatches you find online… you use it over and over again. So, unless you’re doing realistic painting or the same art style with original materials. You will find it hard to use color picker, it won’t feels right, because its color scheme and your color scheme don’t match. Experienced illustrators don’t really color pick. They use their feelings, observations and knowledge. They’re able to choose the colors relative to their own color scheme, albeit different than the original materials, but still “feels right.” You can try look up “skin tutorial digital painting” (or more specifically “dark skin tutorial digital painting”) on UA-cam, you csn find many tutorials on how to start painting skin without color picker. The ones from Sinix Design are my favorites. Keep in mind that these illustrators also have their own styles & color schemes, so just take the general knowledge & ideas before applying your own arts. It all might sounds overwhelming, but actually just draw what you like. Learn, and fail, and learn from that failure…And don’t worry too much. It is still unlikely that what happened to the Encanto fanart illustrator would also happen to us. Don’t let the fear from these scary stories rob our joy and love of painting.
@@Winter0721 I know this is a little late but mosaic filters can help if you want to obtain an average color as base. But to be fair, when doing a portrait you should use multiple colors and hues for skin, even the face has different tones depending on the zone and the muscle distribution
Im Mexican, im white and have red hair. My family is blonde and green eyed and only a few red heads too, we’re all born and raised Mexican. The fact that people think their doing something by speaking out for us instead of letting us take our own stance is more damaging than anything
I’m a white Mexican and Norwegian. People never question I’m Norwegian! But when I say I’m Mexican, I get “REALLY?” One person thought I was lying 🤦🏽♀️
The biggest issue I have is that people claim to be "educating" artists on how to properly color skintones - but it's blatant bullying. It's harassment and consists of yelling, slander, and unnecessary slurs that often than not directed at Asian (or Eastern artists in general). It's not educating. It's bullying.
Exactly. They always say "it's just criticism!! If you can't take criticism you're a bad artist" but the reality is always violent threats, insults, and defacing the art. There's hardly ever a single good-faith attempt at informing the artist.
Yeah, this is what pisses me off about this! Lke it's not hard to encourage people how to color a variety of skin tones. How is bullying and harassment supposed to encourage individuals to illustrate POC? If you truly wanna help the cause, supplement these artists with sound advice and maybe even references. But of course, only preferably when they ask for constructive criticism.
It sucks because it kinda discourages people to draw poc. Because one slip up in color and people will burn you alive. Pastel drawings are a big no-no, so if that's your style, tough luck. It made me afraid to try drawing characters with darker skin tones (and making these drawing public) or having a character with a different culture. It makes me afraid to talk about poc in general, because one slip up with my limited english and i could offend someone. I hate walking on eggshells on this topic.
I wonder why no-one gives a shit when I draw frisk with Olive skin, but godforbid I draw a single black kid as not Hershey’s color…. I fucking get doxxed. Fuck this world.
As a Brazilian, I can say that "Gringo" is NOT an insult. We basically use it to refer as people that are not from our country or are not from Latin America in general. So say you're in Brazil, for example, and you meet an American dude. We would usually refer to him as a gringo, simply cause he's a foreigner. That's literally just it. It's a slang word use to refer to foreigner people. People think too much into stuff, smh...
Exactly! People often like to pick Brazil aside, and claim "oh they're not ''ALLOWED'' to say gringo" like bruh, see that tourist visiting your country? In general people call them tourists/foreigners,, meanwhile we call them gringos just because it's a slang we're accustomed to use. - "Tá vendo aquele cara? Ele deve ser visita né?" "Sim mano, ele é *_gringo_* . Vem de outro país ae." Saying it's a insult or a trigger word is just like claiming that "Karen" or "Boomer" is a insult, like-- what? People can use it to insult someone, sure. But it isn't the word that is insulting itseft, it is the person using it to insult you and the context behind what they're saying. And sometimes, the only person who is finding the word insulting is you. And if that happens, just walk away. I cannot understand how people can't see that. Tô cansada já de apenas quando mencionam o Brasil, é pq a gente se meteu em treta com os americanos ou sla. Sinceramente mano. Ñ é atoa que quando a gente é mencionado dá merda. It's funny because the people popping blood vessels over the drawing are the same ones that are like "uwu spread kindness, acceptance and inclusivity!!

IKR they want to protect minorities but they ended up harassing other, and it's keep going. I guess their mindset like "I stand up for the minority, the one who need to protected, so even the cruelest thing I do is right"
I dont know if thats true. Normal people, even the kind you mention, don't actually give a crap about minor details from a piece of art. People are just insane on twitter.
I remember when people accuse an art of official Genshin as whitewasing. Yes, you heard me. OFFICIAL PICTURE. Created by the person who literally makes the characters. HOW THE HELL DO YOU EVEN ACCUSE OFFICIAL PICTURE WHEN THEY MAKE THE CHARACTERS IN FIRST PLACE??
Let me guess, Kaeya? My sister has drawn him a few times for tiktok and was questioned a few times why he was lighter, when she actually color picked his skin from official art. In her last video someone tried to straight up accuse her of whitewasing.
@@ny7876 I don’t really understand white washing in Asian characters tho? We have so many skin color varieties it doesn’t make any different if we just tone the color up 1-2 tone it make sense if they talk about other race but idk why ppl mad about Asian characters skin tone.
@@MOSVN2511 it still makes sense, no matter what race they are. whitewashing is whitewashing, and there's absolutely no non racist reason to make skin tones lighter.. just keep them the way they are
Also, in the art, there's actually a stage spotlight, and kaeya's basically sitting right under it lmao. Even then kaeya's skintone is still deeper than the others'. I mean just look at klee, she's basically glowing lol. Do people actually know how lighting, esp in stages, work?
No but legit both this and the "Pepa being white is racist" debacle go to show how ignorant Usamericans can be when it comes to other cultures outside of their own. It's especially funny when you realize Disney had a black cultural advisor on board and she approved Pepa's skin color being changed to better represent Colombia's diversity but most people who complain about it want to hear none of it because it destroys their arguments entirely💀
noo because i'm latina and i'm rather pale! and there are a lot of white people here too, in pretty much every country. Being Latino is more of an ethnicity than a race in the end of the day. Anyways i'm really happy we got Isabella. Some of my friends finally have a princess-like character that looks like them
@@heliantaflores933 SAME THOUGH, LIKE...... I'm literally Colombian and part of my family is from the area that the movie's setting takes inspiration from (Eje Cafetero), and most people in there are pretty much white. Twitter people would have an aneurysm if they Actually went there and saw so many pale people 🤣🤣 As for Isabella..... It's Lovely to hear that your friends identify with her!! My sister is quite similar to her as well and was ecstatic when she saw her onscreen. It truly is wonderful how the team nailed the representation on the Madrigal family so well tons of Latinos see ourselves in at least one of the family members.
The discussion was: "Pepa was Black in concept art but the final character ended up white in Encanto". Black people got angry because that was 1 Black character they didn't get. Then there were a few who were like "Why can't we have one movie where white people aren't relevant?"
@Aiuanntodie自殺 From what I've heard about the industry, it's pretty difficult for any POC in the USA to get in, and even more difficult to get a show going (and even then they likely get their series cancelled, like what happened to OK K.O.). The difficulty was even part of the discussion for the New Deal for Animation movement made by people from inside the industry.
There are people who think Pepa being white is racist??? Wtf?? I’ve seen Mexican people with pale skin and bright red hair....like...there are things called regions. Heck not Mexican but I know someone who’s family is Italian but she’s got pale skin, freckles and flame red hair because her family comes specifically from Sicily where apparently that combo is common even tho most Italians tend to be olive skinned and dark haired.
This kind of "activism" just makes things worst... I remember doing my first character of color a little while back and I was sooo nervous posting it, I really didn't want anything bad from it. Did it make me more careful when making the drawing? Yes. Did it also make me almost not post it? Absolutely!
I was the same way. I remember when I first drew a black character I felt the need to write "This is my first time drawing a black character" in the caption. It only makes artists afraid to post this kind of art because of all the drama the "activism" causes. It's sad.
Honestly, it’s begun to make me that way too. I feel like I’m constantly walking on eggshells. I’ve already been through enough in terms of drama and I don’t want any more. There’s a reason I have ALWAYS been HEAVILY against SJWS, despite displaying some of those traits myself.
Oh definitely! I've been more hesitant to draw any more characters of color because I'm so afraid of getting harrassed if I make the smallest of mistakes and then theres the issue of artists getting in trouble for _not_ drawing poc and were just damned if we do and damned if we dont.
I have an oc who I absolutely love, but she's Asian. I am absolutely terrified to post any of the art I've drawn of her or even talk about her. It really makes me sad because she's one of my favorite ocs, but I know that if I got something slightly off, I'd be destroyed online. It's not like I just randomly chose her to be Chinese, it's very important to her story and I even asked input from many friends who are Chinese. They all loved her design and her story, but still cautioned me against posting her anywhere because "Twitter won't like that" Very sad times
You should still post them! You literally did your research and asked actual Chinese people, so what does what white little kids say matter? Best of luck with whatever you decide to do. Maybe post somewhere other than twitter.
I always hated drawing human characters because i could screw up a skin tone or race in any possible way and I'd accidentally seem like a stereotypical asshole. Same reason why i hate drawing female characters.
Every month or so there's drama on twitter where American teens bully Asian artists for drawing in pastel hues. Being bullied for drawing POC would honestly make anyone not want to ever do that again and keep excluding dark skinned characters. They really can't understand that to people who aren't terminally online in some parts of the world, racism and colorism are quite foreign concepts. I live in Eastern Europe and 98% of my country is a single nationality, white people. I see a dark skinned person in passing maybe once a year. I'm educated and know English, but many people aren't, and wouldn't be aware of sensitivities. And East Asia is even more isolated in that regard. Attacking them over hues on a drawing is not the right way to educate anyone. It'd be different if they straight up made characters white, but it's never the case. Not to mention every time skin color drama pops up people are straight up wrong about how lighting works and some young teens have this tumblr mindset that somehow if they make a dark character even darker they score extra points and end racism singlehandedly.
They never tried to educate or understand the intent of the artist, they straight up went to send hate nothing more nothing less. You need to have goodwill towards someone whne you want to teach or correct them this is plain hate and trying to explain why they are right to hate them
it will : if u use a lighter color don't draw your fav black character ..... thats racist ... sadly i don't use this art style but if i ever chose it to be my art style i have a big list for my darker skin characters and i don't care ... this kid must go study art then comeback taking to me ://
God fr I hate the mindset so much- one time I even went to share my OC list and I literally got bullied for having too many white characters Thing is,, it's a fantasy mindset and I don't even have race in mind,, I just look at a design and go with what I feel fits, and to be fair probably 2/3 of my ocs are lighter, but I feel people always forget Asians are POC too,,? Idk man if I ever make a public online presence again I'm just gonna make them all elves or demons or something so they can have blues/purples/pinks/reds, or even greyscales for skin tones,, I do that with a lot of ocs already bc fantasy and color schemes pog but at least that way I'd get actively bullied less,,, I hope?? Idk I know it's a dumb "solution" to have but like,, "You don't draw POC right, you're not allowed to only draw light skinned people tho" like tf am I supposed to do especially when I already spent an extra like 3 hours trying to figure out skin tones and shading for this specific character
why do non-poc obsess over skin colors? omfg I I’m so tired of them pointing every little thing they think is racist/white washing is so tiring. I love the movie because it really shows how Colombia is as a country with its unique culture, away from the cartel/drug stereotypes of the country. (I am Colombian-Venezuelan). I was really excited about the fandom, but I’m just disappointed on how they acted on Twitter, but no surprise there. I really liked the art, I had no problem with it. Encanto was the first movie where I could point at a character and say that the resemblance with me was uncanny (that being Camilo), I’m from Venezuela, Colombia’s neighbors, and the fact that people from so far away trying to represent people from around here is amazing, and I really don’t have any problem with how the artist chose the colors, it seemed like the difference between skin color was picked trying to differentiate the color of the characters enough. Also “gringo” for me and everyone I know is just “person from the USA”. We have a friend who moved in from the United States recently and we call him “a gringo” from time to time just as a jokey way, not at all intended to harm.

Encanto had probably the biggest range of skin tones for a single Latino community that I've seen in an animated anything. Usually they use a single or maybe just a few different skin tones to represent an ethnicity or nationality. I'm Cuban, and as white as we are, we are still Latinos. Latin America refers to any country in the Americas that speaks a Romance language. Whether Twitter likes it or not, we exist, we have things in common with other Latinos, and we are just as proud of our heritage.
Now that you mention it... people should use the greyscale technique more before pointing at others. It seems so easy, yet is still so hard for others to do it, and they prefer bullying, harassing.. witchunting! Instead of approaching in a civil or peaceful way
As someone who is white and Latina I’m tried of people acting people who look like me can’t be Latino. I’ve actually been told I can’t be both like excuse me, just because I have light skin blue eyes and blonde hair doesn’t mean I can’t be part Latino. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk
i’m also white and latina and 😭😭 i felt that!! i have paler skin than my mom who’s the european one (and my brothers have light skin too) but that doesn’t make me or any person like me less latina!!
it baffels me that people fight back. I was asked a classmate where she was from she said Puerto Rico. She is a red head. Was I confused cuz I never saw a red Puerto Rican before? yes, did I have the audacity to fight her back about it? No. why cant people just mind their business :/
@@bleachtardfull as a puerto rican myself it makes no sense to why people think that it’s their business to just assume and guess where others are from. just mind your own business. you did the right thing to not say anything mean :) thank you
I’m a really pale Latino too! And while I do not have the same features as you, (I have dark brown hair and eyes) people tend to mistake me as Asian or white. It’s really embarrassing to stand next to my family and be extremely paler while all of them are either tan or have dark skin.
So are these people saying that I can't be Hispanic (I have Mexican parents) because my skin tone is white? I'm quite literally the epitome of "white washing" for these people. Different skin tones exist, ya know, and pastels are obviously different from let's just say, acrylic paints.
Same here, I'm a full black woman. Sure it depends on the lightening of the room itself but I'm either caramel or pale AF. Does that mean I'm whitewashed too?!XD
I hate this situation. It's honestly deterred me from wanting to draw people with darker skin tones. I grew up in an area that was predominantly white. While I have no problem with people of color, and in fact have a few close friends who could be described as such, my interactions with other races in general have been limited due to this fact. Unfortunately, this is reflected in my art. Like most artists, I draw what I know, and that results in the majority of my characters having light skin. I look through my own art and think, "I need to broaden my horizons and add some diversity." And then as soon as I do, I get told I'm being insensitive or representing a race wrong. Well yeah! Of course it's not perfect! I've barely had any practice, and you're just deterring me from getting more! As much as I'd love to share my work, it makes me glad that I'm not in the habit of doing so. I appreciate a decent critique, but I don't think I could handle the negativity of the internet.
If you’re worried you might not be portraying poc correctly, just ask someone from that culture you chose to draw. Don’t listen to white people with their savior complex, if you make a mistake it’s really not a big deal as long as you correct yourself. These Twitter idiots are so annoying :/
This is so true. I once got told that I don’t include enough diversity in my art so I was inspired to draw a darker skin toned oc. I then proceeded to get told (by the same person) that I did it wrong because I made the skin tone too dark/ashy(desaturated) 💀💀 BRO WTF,,, This is why I stick to drawing stuff from my own culture. I can’t get told I’m being racist to my own race…
In fact i have become friends with a few, add some diversity idk it just sounds so weird ngl maybe u rlly should start for interacting with more people in general from all kinds of backgrounds and paths of life if pretty everyone in your life is white there isn't that much of a point on u just adding fictional tokens to ur art
This exactly, they are literally getting proved wrong by the people they were "defending". And yet they STILL fight. There isn't enough words in any language to express how mad I am.
It happens a lot in our community. Somebody tries to take away something we love because they think it's racist. We'd love it more if it was racist lmao.
@A. C. Solis yup. We love to joke about our culture. Don't go to Mexico if you're fat and you're sensitive because your new name is gonna be Gordo or Gordita.
Honestly I think this also comes down to art style. Fan art isn't necessarily all about accuracy, it's just about appreciating the character. Maybe their art style is super soft and light and they prefer to use lighter colors? Idk man I just stay off twitter.
It could also be the device they're drawing on!! When I do digital art on my iPad the colors always look more light and muted. But when I look at the post on my phone it's always way more saturated 💀
or they simply did not know the skin tone properly or couldnt find the right color! its a pretty easy thing to mistake since some of the characters are kind of light colored and they r all different so maybe the person wanted to save some of the trouble and make the skin tones the same as the others- idek if that makes sense
@@madmouse1016 ah yeah thats too ... i hated it ma colors are different ... u can see the artist make every thing lighter not just the skin its more like a filter for the original work
Well, you’re not really appreciating a character if you can’t work your way around their dark skin because of your aesthetic. I think making their shade vibrant is the trick, not lightening. Thought it won’t hurt to make it one shade lighter.
I tend to do this as well but half the time the colour picker is huffing glue or something 'cause it gives me a random colour that I don't even see on the screenshot XD
This reminds me of the time that someone did a great piece of fan art for Symmetra from Overwatch. Someone tried pulling this same BS, saying that they 'Whitewashed' her because her skin was a little lighter. They then posted a screen shot of her character IN THE SHADE and said that this was her actual skin colour. Luckily the artist wasn't having any of this and pulled out tons of different screenshots of Symmetra in different lighting and such, and showed her skin colour/tone pallet. Proving that they did not whitewashed her at all. Of course the accuser backpedaled and claimed they only accused them because 'Whitewashing in fanart was becoming a problem' and that they just had to make sure. Yeah right.
Gringo is to Latino as Gentile is to Jew, and as Cis is to Trans. All it is... is a word describing someone who is *not* a part of the other group. As a Hispanic person who is white, it literally made me immensely happy when I saw Pepa with red hair and light skin. I also really loved the overall variety of skin tones within the Madrigals, and I just *knew* the other types of Hispanic/Latino people also felt seen! The movie Encanto is truly perfection in countless ways. But yeah this drama over fanart is just bullying tbh The artist didn't deserve that, especially not to that extent.
honestly such a helpful comment for helping understand the word as someone whos trans - cis is just a general description but can be used as an insult sometimes and the same applies to gringo, thank you so much for that
When I saw Mirabel I saw myself. As a child I dreamt about a character that looked just like me. Finally after 20 years of waiting Disney gave me Mirabel. Child me could rest knowing I got myself animated. Even on screen I couldn’t help but hold my arm out and compare the tone. I was her exact shade. Which made me so happy.
I feel you! I like designing characters in a variety of skin tones and ethnicities, plus I like using strong lighting and occasionally pastel shading for specific moods. I want to post art on Twitter but people like this terrify me…
This though, I really like creating characters from cultures that aren't my own so i can delve into researching and enjoying the culture in a way that i can without causing myself undue stress due to travel and what not. Its very disheartening when i create a dungeons and dragons character that i dont feel i can play unless its specifically with my close friends because i feel like ill be accused of cultural appropriation when im just trying to have fun...
dude, it all started because someone made a piece of fanart that didn't have the exact skin tones in the original movie??? did y'all never hear about color palettes??? COLORS. LOOK. DIFFERENT. IN. DIFFERENT. LIGHTING. AND. CONTEXT. the fanart had a pastel theme, ofc the colors will be lighter, their clothes are also lighter, Isabella's hair is BLUE. You can't just color pick the skin tones and say "umm actually the skin tones aren't right because they aren't the exact hex codes in the original movie", like do people actually not know how color theory works????? I've seen drawings where pure gray was pastel green in the context, I've seen amazing drawings using insane saturated colors where the character skin was hot magenta and it still looked right. CONTEXT PEOPLE, C O N T E X T. It's only whitewashing if the colors don't work in the context, like if I picked every color from Mirabel's 3d model but then picked a lighter shade for her skin for no reason. I hate twitter so much.
i was surprised that no artist using lighting, the basic fundamental. As reason why dark skinned people looks brighter under bright lighting Also, those people not trying to cancel the sun because it "whitewashing" everyone under the sun equally everyday for 4.603 billion years in a row as well? 👀
@@mystrallsnowlight yeah, I've seen a bunch of art tutorials on how to shade skin tones, dark skin tones reflect a LOT of light, when they're under direct sunlight the skin almost look white or light gray in some spots (ik that with cool skin tones under white light it can look like light purple sometimes). Most people don't really know how to shade dark skin, especially if they're not dark skinned themselves (like me, which is why I watched so many tutorials), so under a harsh light their skin tones tend to end up a bit too bright, but calling that "whitewashing" is so dumb, it's not like they're doing it on purpose bro.
There’s something quite amusing seeing how uneducated kids just color pick artists works and bullying them just because these kids have no idea what colors theory is. I swear to god i can make an art of poc being flashed with industrial lights and they will say it’s white Washing. Cancel lighting ig????
I literally saw two images of like a Japanese classroom and basically they were showing how different lighting can effect an image, the first image was in darker lighting so everyone looked tan whilst the second one everyone was very pale. LIGHTING FUCKING EXISTS PEOPLE.
Unbelivable how far people go for the sake of "inclusion and respecting other cultures" that they become the very thing they say to be fighting against, by believing that if you're from a certain place you MUST have a specific skin color. Here in Latin America we joke about Americans believing that everything below them is just Mexico and South Mexico, but things like this make me wonder how much of a joke it really is
Its actually quite scary! I have to constantly remind people that not every Spanish speaking person is from MEXICO, and not every MEXICAN is gonna look "MEXICAN" because just like America, Mexico is a melting pot. Just like most countries. I have family members that look afrolatino and some that look white, meanwhile Im tan. Its legitimately sad that we fought for our diversity and now we're being forced back into that box. 😮💨
American here, given the fact I’ve only take a geography quiz ONCE in my life and it was for AP Euro and that I can’t place where the us states are with the exception of my own, my former, the ones surrounding them, the well known states… Probably not a joke buddy I’m sorry to say, if some school out there somewhere DOES have geography classes it certainly isn’t mandatory or at the very least mandatory in the North Carolina/Virginia areas.
@@kiroonsmoon Ive taken a geography test atleast maybe 4 times throughout my entire school life. I took a US quiz in like my freshman year once and I was only able to name the tri state, Florida, Texas and a couple others. They dont really emphasize that we need to atleast KNOW 80% of our states. Im able to remember the BOTW map better than the US one unfortunately :(( Mainly because its not mandatory
Just a clarification, Gringo is used in outsiders(especially Americans) no matter of their skin color. Just the fact that you have lived in another country that is not from Latinoamérica makes you a Gringo.
Yes! Also if you search for "gringo Brasil" on UA-cam you'll find a lot of videos and channels of foreigners doing stuff related to Brazilian culture. Some foreign channels even have "gringo" on their name and I really don't think they would name their channel that If they found it to be offensive
Poverty: exists People: ._. Ecological problems: exist People: ._. Somebody: draws a person two shades paler People: LET'S BEAT THE SH~T OUT OF THIS ARTIST
Honestly, I think most of the time people on Twitter are upset about issues like poverty and global warming, but they can't personally do anything about that, so they take their anger out on smaller issues (and perceived issues) that have a person they can go after. It's not right, I don't support it at all, but I do think it's a result of feeling helpless and out of control. That or people on Twitter are just looking for entertainment and beat people down for fun.
@@meganmullis5386 I'd like to believe that.... but most of them are plainly just going for a ride and use 'diversity' as their shield, i do believe some of them are frustrated but a lot of these mass are unneeded to show their hubris to those who just wanted to draw art. Beautiful art. Art that doesn't need any of their gimmicks.
Honestly this is why I stopped drawing POC. I would use the eye drop tool so I would get the exact same colour and shade as the ones used on the cartoon/show/movie… people still said I was white washing somehow. I think it’s just a situation you can’t win, Which sucks because I can’t draw some of my favourite characters!

@@malena111 I'm Indonesian... and while my race is still considered POC too, I personally think I will shy away from drawing people with darker skintone than my race because I'm afraid I will get bullied like the artist in this video too...
If you are an artist and have that artistic lens you know why he chose those specific colors but people with no artistic background would see it as "whitewashing". The artwork has a certain color palette that if the artist was to be 100 percent accurate it would visually look off. The fact that this turned into a whole debate is wild and shows people will find any reason to express their "wokeness" to the point where it becomes misplaced and toxic
For me everything was a little more bright. But the darken skin was still dark the lighter was just more light. Even the colors of the clothe were more bright. I don't have an artistic lens but I don't understand why people said there was whitewashing. Sorry for every faults that I made, I'm not a native speaker and has a learning disability to writing ( I can't remember the name).
This is coming from people who don't understand lighting. This reminds me of the genshin drama where Kaeya (a tan character) was drawn in official art in a stage setting, and people got mad the company was "white washing" him. They really outed themselves as having never seen a black person on stage, because if they had they'd know stage lights WASH YOU OUT TO HELL AND BACK.
@@jadecoolness101 some pale dancers I know wear bronzer and darker makeup on stage because otherwise their skin looks somewhat white-greenish (not beige) and unhealthy in the stage lighting. Colour photography and video with modern stage lighting were also the reason tan came into fashion. In the era of candlelight it would be opposite regardless of race and ethnicity, England to Egypt to Japan.
@@annasolovyeva1013 yeah, trying to dodge the "sickly ghost" look as a pale performer is extremely hard. Especially now that fake tan is considered an extension of bIackface... ;-;
Colorism is a real thing, but making slightly less dark fanart isnt colorism/whitewashing, and attacking the artist isnt gonna fix it lol. Im latino myself and yeah we're super varied in skin tone. On my dad's side, half of them look white and the other half look more indigenous depsite being all brothers and sisters. It is a true that so many white teens speak for other minorities but it is also true that some non-black PoC will get very antiblack on the topic of colorism. None of it is ok, I wish we could all converse normally!!!
The fact that real latino people are defending this dude and it's the 'Muricans that are canceling him makes me ashamed to be white. Even worse is that they're calling the latin folk racist when they just bandwagon-bullied a Japanese guy. Seems kinda hypocritical to me...
The sad part is that if the artist made the skin tone darker than the character's skin color because of the light setting, twitter would probably have praised the artist.
Yes and when you have a certain tones in art, its more about light and shadow, not whitewashing. I think this has gone way too far. But I know that no matter what you do, someone WILL complain.
No it can't be! We all know people of color have their skin coated with AI controlled nano projector that makes sure their skin stays in one color regardless of the light!! How could you be so ignorant you reces!
Yea you could see that there was light shining down and that's not how usually skin color looks without light plus you also see that they use pastel colors. And even if it was white washing I don't think the artist did it intentional and instead of attacking the artist they could just tell them politely what's wrong.
Got harassed for the exact same thing. I was accused of whitewashing the characters in a large piece of Encanto fanart I drew, and I was so humiliated that I deleted the post altogether. While it was only a few people who raised the accusations, it still bothered me a lot, and I've avoided drawing Encanto fanart ever since out of fear of being canceled. That being said, I can't imagine what this poor artist felt after having a whole swarm of people fighting over that piece. It was a beautiful piece and the artist did NOT deserve that treatment at all. Edit cus I realized I wasn’t super clear in what I said: ever since then, I have ventured out to creating numerous characters that all vary in skin color. This includes poc. I’m just no longer comfortable with making Encanto Fanart specifically because the amount of hate I got from posting it the first time around made me just shy away from that all together. I still love Encanto. The characters are all beautifully designed. But I learned my lesson. And I’ve been practicing skin rendering everyday since.
@@grenlinmew sometimes, despite the research and the training an artist does, people still target them anyway because they don't draw POC exactly how they like it
When it comes to "just because your skin is light doesn't mean you can't be Latino" can also be applied to heaps of other nationality's. For example, my Mums side of the family is partially Maori (a mostly dark skinned race) and partially English, while my dad side is partially Scottish and English. So if you put all of those in the mixing pot its not surprising if members in our family have light skin, like me, while other members have darker skin, like my grandfather, aunty and sister. None-the-less, my heritage is still Maori whether my skin is light or not. There seems to be a lot of people who don't get this though, because I've had plenty of people tell me online I must be lying. Just remember kids, skin doesn't automatically equal race all the time.
this! i’m half white, quarter filipino and quarter native american. whenever i tell people about my non-white heritage they don’t believe me, think i’m joking, or invalidate my culture because i have light skin.
@@saltyduckie the other day my friend found out about my non-white heritage and legit was like "REALLY? Are you sure". It's honestly so annoying and I wish people were more accepting of ideologies like this.
@@smci_1236 the “are you sure?” question is definitely one i’ve gotten before, too. i hope in the future people learn, as you said, skin color doesn’t automatically equal race
@@koji90 Exactly. People need to understand that skin doesn't automatically mean anything. That if you have lighter skin your not automatically just white. Or that if you have darker skin that you're not automatically just black.
People of bird app really need to stop starting things. Her farnart looked lovely, loved the color pop with the background that makes them shine. Reminds me of the song the Madrigals sang at the end of the movie. Love it
I am half black and was going to comment on how well they represents so many skin tones in a pastel stylized palatte? How do people think they didn’t rep a variety of skin tones really well? Edit: NEVER thought I would say this…but I am so glad that I am an old enough artist to know what real white washing is-because I would hate to be a part of a generation that is pushing sensitivity so far that they make themselves the villains.
@@LakeofCrystalclan When you have a lightened a character so drastically from their original art or human reference and that you cannot gather their ethnic background or the general colour of their skin tone in comparison to other characters. This can go for character features as well depending on the art style, if you have completely removed features that eluded to there ethnicity. Since this picture has multiple people and they all have varying skin tones that allude to the fast differences in their looks and thoroughly expresses a tonal and hue gradient within their skin tones; this is not whitewashing in my opinion.
This feels like that scene from Mean Girls, "If you're from Africa, why are you white?" It's so silly that people think that different race or cultural groups only come from certain countries.
@@ghost_rue Me too. I'm a white South African and if I don't say anything. I could pass as a White American too. No kidding, ppl have asked me why I'm white if I'm African
I mean this artist really understood the relationship between color, saturation and luminess. They made the backgroud and skin color less saturated but still pretty acurate, in order to make the color and details of the clothes pop out. (at least thats what I think). The more washed out colors might be also the style of this artist. The art is really good and you can see the skill of the artist. nothing is wrong here :) It's just a lovely ilustration made by fan.
Thank you for making this. It makes me upset when I wanna enjoy artists draw TWDG fanart and see their art receives criticism for not being the exact skin colour when they tried and made lovely art :(
Imagine spending thousands of hours to learn how to draw, then spend a lot of time drawing every detail in this fanart, and then get cancelled for using pastel colours
As a Latino myself, I saw nothing wrong with the art being shown. I will say that there is a problem with white washing (*cough cough* The Gacha community filled with trolls who make ALL of the characters with the same skin tone *COUGH*) and race bending altogether (y'all remember the Zeefixes art drama?) But regardless, there was nothing wrong. The artist went with a lighter color pallette altogether to contrast with the dark background (which I think was done really well). If y'all want to advocate for true representation, try also looking if the pallette was fitting together and not just a random color thrown out of nowhere. I hope the artist is doing well, and to all the snowflakes who think this is a big atrocity, different color palettes and color undertones exist. As long as the original base colors are showing through properly
Yup. I enjoy playing the games and stuff but fr, it’s extremely toxic. The only thing I’d have to say is there’s a lot of kids who might not understand the severity of everyone else’s idea of whitewashing
I remember my friend who I believe was semi-addicted to Twitter, once told me something.. I was drawing a character designs for my portfolio and I drew this sibling characters, brother who loves rock and anything heavy metal, and sister who is the complete opposite of him. They are both fairies and live in a fantasy world etc… The concept itself was..not very fresh but I enjoyed drawing it. And when I showed this to my friend, she looked at it and start talking to me as if she is my mother?.. Like, “Why did you draw him with dark hair with black shirts? I’ve never seen any rock lovers wear like that. This is very stereotypical and short minded of you. Fix it” And I was..shocked?.. like..girl, emo kids exist. (But this argument doesn’t really work here in Korea because..there are no..label such as ‘emo kids’ so no one knows what that means) I used to wear black all the time and I was not even emo. And in character designs you NEED some stereotypical images to make it work! And at that time, I was kinda hurt and couldn’t say anything because I really thought I was doing something wrong, but now that I look back, she was just walking Twitter, nothing more. She didn’t know anything about character designing but yet she decided to “call me out”

As an artist who has a basic understanding of colours I knew instantly that the artist was using a pastel colour pallet. I use muted colours for my style, it would be so weird if I used vibrant skin colours when I have the back ground, hair, clothing and everything else less vibrant just like it would be weird if the artists of this Encanto piece used none pastels when the entire piece was pretty much in pastel. People are too quick to judge based on if it looks slightly different from official art and don’t take lighting or art style into account most of the time.
The problem with the "professionally offended" is that they are the very bullies they claim to rail against. I don't even think this is about race to them: it's about control to make themselves look good by claiming to speak for others. Shame on them for attacking an artist who just wanted to make a nice fan drawing of a film they enjoyed.
Agree, to some extent it sometimes feel like public shaming.. I've notice the same thing sometimes when someone drew a character with a bit of a chubby chibi body and people started calling them the P child offender word..
As an artist here’s my take: Whitewashing does not exist when the characters you are drawing are 3D models. Encanto was a 3D animated film, different lighting and different settings often made the character’s skin appear differently in certain scenes. A darker skinned character appearing a little lighter than they are in a certain type of lighting isn’t whitewashing it’s literally just how fucking light works. EDIT: I’ve gotten a couple replies stating this rule applies to all art and I agree, I’m just using 3D models as an example since that’s the style the actual movie is done in y’all 💀 but yes, I am aware it applies to any and all work ok EDIT NUMBER 2: Ok I honestly didn’t think I’d need to clarify THIS MUCH, but the replies to my original comment proved me wrong so here I go. Look, I know the difference between actual racism and accidentally making a character two shades lighter 💀 I am aware drawing a black character as a white one is insensitive and racist. I’m not fucking blind, but I also know making a character a little lighter than they are due to lighting is NOT making them white. There is no *white* washing in that case.
Agreed! If you color dropped on different skintones of the same character in different lighting you could probably get like 50+ different colors. and honestly depending on if you color drop in a highlighted or shaded part you can get an entire spectrum of skintones just from one image. people never take that into consideration...
I'm brazilian and we actually always use "gringo" to refer any north-american. And about the artwork, i really like the artist style. Encanto is a great step to break sthereotypes. Despite i be brazilian, i have a very white skin, like my entire family
@@ShwappaJ not really, gringo is just a term used to name people for the US mainly. Like if you just say "el gringo" it has nothing bad but if you say "gringo tonto" or smth like that, then yeah it becomes an insult
Latina here, and the best thing to came out of it was the awesome "You don't speak about gringo" song. Beautiful. So sad the artist got so bullied, all latinos loved their work. And no, gringo is not a slur: it's a word created in Mexico that refers to people from the USA. That's all. It's just a popular demonym.
the art is beautiful dude this makes me sad and i used to be an artist and this and many other reasons is why i gave up my dream on being an artist. i have loved drawing it’s been my only talent since childhood but this world doesn’t allow creatives to live happily, we are punished for having a creative mind.
I literally can’t stand how everything is so self-objectified, labeled, and based on colors nowadays. The woke kids think they doin somthin right but they are actually just making themselves look like a oppressed hypocrites, harassing innocent people for making a minor mistake or just being offended because they want attention and are over-sensitive. Not to mention woke people demand an apology from the person who makes a mistake but no matter how sympathetic and apologetic one’s apology may be it’s never good enough for society so their just forced to remove themselves from the internet completely.
This is why for small creators it’s better to “call in” than “call out”. I know “cancelling” can be helpful with big things like celebrities and corporations that are actively causing harm because its essentially boycotting, but this is just harassment
I'm Latina and my family is literally a rainbow. Some of my family members are very dark and some are white as paper and most of us land somewhere in-between. I saw someone else mention that assuming all Latinx individuals are dark is just as harmful. Unless someone is a part of that culture, they have no right to tell us what Latinx people look like because we come from such a vast racial and cultural background. Not every Mexican, Colombian, Salvadoran, etc will look the same. I'm sorry the original artist got so much hate, I really do think the original work was beautiful and depicted the importance of family between the characters.
Can confirm the whole “a person’s skin color does not dictate their ethnicity thing” , as my dad and pretty much his entire side of the family lived/lives in Panama, but at a glance you’d never guess that.
As a Brazilian, I can say that the term "gringo" is truly used as a slang to call people that came from outside our country. We don't use this in a bad way, it's just a slang
the word gringo comes from the words "Green Go" which were chanted by latinos to United States military men when they entered countries to intervene with our politics. Theres some other slang words that derive from english. I wouldnt say that gringo is a slur, it is just a slang word that refers to people from the United States. Some people do sometimes use it in a mean "us and them" kind of way, but it is not a slur at all. Most people use it in a jokey or friendly way, like calling someone dude for example.
The word is actually far older and was used in the 1700 to denote foreigns in the ports of Spain and Portugal. Comes from a very accented pronunciation of "Griego" = "gringo"
It's like this type of situation happens every year on twitter I swear. This is why we only allow Twitter access for government officials. It's for our people's own sanity. They don't need that drama. That being said, the fanart looks incredible, and I feel the hate also has to do with just plain jealousy.
Bruh I'm afraid to post my art on Twitter cuz I got this one oc that's black w/ straight hair (guy in my pfp) and I just KNOW if it reaches the wrong audience imma get doxxed for it or something. It's so stupid yet not unrealistic by Twitter standards. People gonna be tryna "fix" him by givin him a fade or some shi 💀
I have tons of dark skinned characters with blonde/brown hair, because it's based off a fictional kingdom where the people from the kingdom tend to be wavy blondes with darkened skin. I'm sure they'd be 'fixed' like that as well. 😭
As a fellow Latina myself, no, Gringo IS NOT a slur nor an insult. We don't use it in a degroritary way at all and just say it as a way to refer to north american people (mostly people in the states) The fact people are saying it is, is just- wow
this reminds me of a piece of warrior cats fanart that i saw on youtube a while back. it was a drawing of an orange cat under blue lighting because they were surrounded by water, which made them a really dull brown. somehow, people did not understand this, and the artist had to literally go in the comments and explain how colors work just so people would stop pointing it out
Brazilian here. An interesting thing about us: its probably normal in other places as well, but in the same way that you can differentiate an brittish person from a North American by their accent, we have a tendency to reconize other people state of origin by their accents. The word Gringo is normaly used on people who are not only foreigners, but also have a really strong non-Brazilian portuguese accent. Its not a slur or meant to be offensive in any way, we reconize people by what is really noticeable on them. Other two good examples are the terms "Branquelo" for someone who has a really white skin tone and is skinny and/or tall, and "Negão" for a black person, usually tall and strong. None of these terms are used with a negative connotation, its just lighthearted nicknames.
I'm not Colombian, but I am latina and I live here since ever. The movie is really popular here, everybody loved it and the latino fanbase - at least from what I saw - was pretty wholesome and welcoming. I can tell you that 99,9% of people who got "offended" by Peppa's skin color or the fanarts are NOT latinos. Those gringos really need to stfu and stop acting like knight armors trying to "protect" minority from the most stupid things. Edit: plus, gringo is not a slur, don't worry. It means "foreign".
The words “they deserved it” make my blood boil! Like it’s the most annoying thing someone can say! Unless they got life in prison for murdering someone, no one deserves hate like that!
The aggressive confrontation at the beginning, not even attempting to start an actual conversation about it and straight for smashing your tablet with a sledgehammer. Smh. I'm roma ("gypsy") and if I drew fanart of Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame (book version, not the Disney version) with my skin colour it would be labelled as whitewashing for sure. In our culture it's generally considered beautiful to be darker skinned, so now I can get mean comments from roma grannies about my paleness, get racist remarks from racists for not being white enough, and get shit on twitter for whitewashing my own ethnicity-- what a timeline to live in.
The way I saw it was more like a pastel color palette, because even the colors around them were soft and lighter. I remember seeing an example of pastel for darker skin too and maybe I'm remembering wrong, but the colors matched up to that pretty well-
Encantos "diversity" isn't there just for diversity's sake. It accurately represents the racial composition of the setting that it depicts, which is more than we can say for many films now a days...
As an artist I'm scared to post any of my art with colour anymore and afraid of getting facial features or hair wrong. I've seen so many artists being driven off platforms for not being able to draw something properly even though they were still learning, or artists who used the eyedropper tool to ensure they got the exact skin tone from a screenshot and still got called out. Yet, I've seen so many characters deliberately drawn alot darker than they actually are and saying the creators of these characters are wrong about the skin tone of their own characters .-.
Don't worry, haters will always complain about your art, whether it's correct or not. thats just what they do and have no shame, They will always complain about petty shit. The ones who hate on artists for no reason can't draw like the people they hate on, so they will harass and if they come for you. Ignore them. They're diverse , obsessed fuckers.
I'm a latino who has a wide variety of skin tones, so I really like seeing the variety of Encanto! It doesn't make sense for these people to say that it's "whitewashing" is just stupid. I was accused of whitewashing myself because in my winter art, I made myself lighter than my summer art. I also have a sister who is a latina, and when I drew her really pale, people were getting mad at me for doing so. She has a vitamin D deficiency. I would also think that it would be hard to whitewash myself, but you never know ig.
oh god- i found this so ridiculously unfunnily funny lmao the concept of whitewashing oneself is just- so- weird i mean, yeah, it definetely does happen, maybe because of internalised racism (which is sadly still a big problem nowadays that isnt nowhere near as adressed as it should be) or just simply because one doesnt know how colors work, mainly young/inexperienced/begginer artists. but, even in real life, one's skin tone changes. maybe when there is a lot of sun you get a more dark/tanned skintone but in winter one may get as pale as white toothpaste and also im really bothered by the idea that all latino people have darker skintones. as a latino aspiring artist and someone who has been drawing for some years now, i did use to whitewash myself in some of my old art, but i wasnt really trying to hide anything or offend anyone (who would i offend though, myself?), i just simply didnt knew how colors worked and everyone else seemed to have white pale ocs. then i should have one like that too, right? anyways, ty for sharing your experience, it has really given me something to think about and brought back some memories too, hope you have a nice day!
Forgive me but I died when you said your sister has a vitamin D deficiency- I'm just imagining the look on someone's face when you tell them that after they accuse you of whitewashing
Thank you for always supplying us with the scoop on wtf is happening on Twitter. Seeing stuff like this do sometimes raises my hair into high alert whenever I post anything online, to the point I sometimes rather stay silent than speaking out on stuff for the fear of getting myself sprayed with the toxicity that is twitter. I like that twitter is a space free for anyone to have a voice (in theory, at least) but that freedom does bring out the evilness from people sometimes. All the love for the artist tho; Even if they were in the wrong, they don't deserve to be harassed, much less death threats.
At some point, I believe that every artist will have this fear or phobia with posting their art online, in fear that at some point some random stranger is going to take offense to the smallest of details and rally a group of ravenous supporters to end them. Trust me, I already have that fear myself. As much as I'd like to draw characters that I like, I'd rather not risk having people pressure me in my DM's into killing myself.
How dare you draw his pinky finger a little too long. We finally had a character which short pinky fingered people could relate to. The extra 2 mm you added to the finger ruined the character for them. You are ableist, and also sexist too.
The art you showed as a Latino who always struggled with colorism didn’t bother me, yes whitewashing is so serious but the art was just drawn in pastel Colors. People are really sensitive with whitewashing because it happens so much which is understandable but we need to think before accusing people unfairly, shading and the type of colors we use matters a lot!
The only thing that makes me feel a little better is that everytime something like that happens theres a bunch of people pointing out how these "woke" folks are wrong,of course this will not erase all the emotional demage that these artists got but at least we can have hope that theres still people out there with some sense to speak up in name of what is right and against this insane behavior
Mann I wish that we could just DRAW, can’t even make a piece of fan art without trouble on twitter, it’s getting to the point where even as a black person myself I’m scared to draw my own skin, my own heir, actually I think we are at that point, I understand that there are some really racist people out there but, if the community themselves tell you it’s not and issue, then it’s not an issue. Personally I just wish people no matter the race could draw, longs their not being problematic ofc there is no issue. Edit: also the whole gringo thing makes me cringe, I don’t use that lightly because everyone throws it around but that within itself makes me cringe.
I have had this fanart saved right after I finished Encanto a few months back, and it was honestly one of the prettiest fanart I've ever seen in my life. Not once did it cross my mind that it was whitewashing or anything of the sort. I really feel sorry for the artist, and hope they don't get discouraged and stop drawing all together :(((
honestly this is one of the reasons why whenever i ever draw any person of color, I keep getting that anxious feeling of posting the art and some rando will take it out of context and say I'm some sort of evil cult leader or something for not respecting skin tones or something Like, BRUH the art is so beautiful and good and the artstyle just makes the color pop out more but like usual there's always groups of people who will make something that was meant to be happy and beautiful into something hateful all of a sudden over their messed up mind set seriously the artist did not deserve any hate whatsoever
OMG! My friend got canceled for her pastel color fanart of “What We Do in the Shadows” when she is a POC herself, lol. She didn’t even try to argue and just blocked 200+ of people who attacked her and deleted everything related to the fandom. The thing is the color she used is similar to the official poster. Sometimes people just want to attack 😂
I'd love to hear what these people think of my primary school which had only basic crayons so every drawing had either yellow pink or dark brown skin tone haha, those actual skin tone crayons were so rare
As a Latina I find the art an absolute masterpiece and I don’t see any problem with the piece. You know the artist meant no harm at all they are simply making a fanart i feel so bad for the artist for getting all this hate over nothing.
my entire family is mexican but i am one of the few very light-skinned members. at school and in my family i i have always been constantly picked on for how pail my skin was. my culture has always been completely disregarded at school. i felt like i’d never truly be “Mexican” unless my skin was darker. it has always been one of my biggest insecurities. now, i embrace my culture with pride despite my skin color. seeing encanto and their representation of light-skinned latinos made myself feel included :)
Since I'm not a person of color I know I can't speak for or over the Latino community about controversial Encanto art, but personally? I've been drawing fanart for the movie since I first saw it at the beginning of the year and my portfolio has more diversity than ever because of it. I've seen a lot of people in the fandom complaining about how easy it would be to color-pick the characters' skin tones to avoid portraying them incorrectly, but honestly it does make me really happy to see artists being inspired by these character designs to branch out and draw hair types and skin tones they previously may not have had a lot of experience with, you know?? That being said I'm glad you mentioned Tumblr because that's exactly what this reminded me of--I remember a lot of stuff similar to this happening there back in the day, where a lot of people were eager to call out anything they thought resembled racism but were so misinformed that they ended up hurting everyone in the process--and at that point you wonder if they actually cared about defending POC communities or just... Wanted to start drama for the sake of drama. (I think I have a pretty good idea of what site all those Tumblr users migrated to...)

As usual, I feel bad for the artists getting unnecessary hate.
it was honestly sad going through their art and seeing most of the posts had been deleted
@@MohammedAgbadi The fact that the person wasn't even part of the minority baffles me. I hate that this artist got hated on with no cause
Imagine thinking Twitter users understand color theory or go outside

so true!! i love the fanart and the artists other work. sad they had to delete a bunch of their art over this thing
Yeah it’s always the white talking about the whitewashing, like bruh
Nah, some of them are apart of minority groups, but they don't like taking accountability for anything they do
The person who brought it up is black. stop.
I don't understand people.
this is what i thought!
This isn’t art. Where you lighten Simone so much you can’t tell they black. Black Latino never get representation. Every freaking day I see bash of white or pale Latino on media 24/7. @@TheParagonIsDead what you can describe as Latino race is being mixed Native American with European, which is common in LATAM, but does not describe every Latino.
Or people that think black people only come in one shade and we can't possibly be light-skinned!
Exacto
I use gringo only with my close friends as a little joke !! My friends and I are all Hispanic and come in variety of colors, some being lighter than others does not make them white.
I agree! 💖
They’re able to choose the colors relative to their own color scheme, albeit different than the original materials, but still “feels right.”
You can try look up “skin tutorial digital painting” (or more specifically “dark skin tutorial digital painting”) on UA-cam, you csn find many tutorials on how to start painting skin without color picker.

It's not educating. It's bullying.

Exactly! People often like to pick Brazil aside, and claim "oh they're not ''ALLOWED'' to say gringo" like bruh, see that tourist visiting your country? In general people call them tourists/foreigners,, meanwhile we call them gringos just because it's a slang we're accustomed to use.

"Sim mano, ele é *_gringo_* . Vem de outro país ae."
Saying it's a insult or a trigger word is just like claiming that "Karen" or "Boomer" is a insult, like-- what?
People can use it to insult someone, sure.
But it isn't the word that is insulting itseft, it is the person using it to insult you and the context behind what they're saying.
And sometimes, the only person who is finding the word insulting is you. And if that happens, just walk away. I cannot understand how people can't see that.

God fr I hate the mindset so much- one time I even went to share my OC list and I literally got bullied for having too many white characters
Thing is,, it's a fantasy mindset and I don't even have race in mind,, I just look at a design and go with what I feel fits, and to be fair probably 2/3 of my ocs are lighter, but I feel people always forget Asians are POC too,,?

While I have no problem with people of color, and in fact have a few close friends who could be described as such, my interactions with other races in general have been limited due to this fact. Unfortunately, this is reflected in my art. Like most artists, I draw what I know, and that results in the majority of my characters having light skin. or they simply did not know the skin tone properly or couldnt find the right color! its a pretty easy thing to mistake since some of the characters are kind of light colored and they r all different so maybe the person wanted to save some of the trouble and make the skin tones the same as the others- idek if that makes sense
@@blandface9957 fr, that's a good point- I have to always glance between my iPad and my computer because they're always different shades.
Tbh, whenever I draw fan art, I color pick initial skin colors from the original character; because I am terrified of this happening.
lmaoooo you're playing it safe. i like that.
Honestly, so do I. It's not a surprising thing that this sort of thing influences others.
I tend to do this as well but half the time the colour picker is huffing glue or something 'cause it gives me a random colour that I don't even see on the screenshot XD
Even that won't save you because Twitter is still filled with morons
I'm more comfortable with watercolor over digital, so I always panic while doing the skin
But yeah this drama over fanart is just bullying tbh
The artist didn't deserve that, especially not to that extent.

dude, it all started because someone made a piece of fanart that didn't have the exact skin tones in the original movie??? did y'all never hear about color palettes???
COLORS. LOOK. DIFFERENT. IN. DIFFERENT. LIGHTING. AND. CONTEXT.
the fanart had a pastel theme, ofc the colors will be lighter, their clothes are also lighter, Isabella's hair is BLUE.
As reason why dark skinned people looks brighter under bright lighting
Also, those people not trying to cancel the sun because it "whitewashing" everyone under the sun equally everyday for 4.603 billion years in a row as well?

Sadly, it's not a joke, they really do think that.

The sad part is that if the artist made the skin tone darker than the character's skin color because of the light setting, twitter would probably have praised the artist.
Twitter users when they discover colors can look different under light: 🤬😡😠😭😭😭
It’s ok to make the skin tone slightly lighter if the characters are in a setting where’s there’s a lot of light it’s not white washing

Fr light affects the skin a lot
@@LakeofCrystalclan When you have a lightened a character so drastically from their original art or human reference and that you cannot gather their ethnic background or the general colour of their skin tone in comparison to other characters. Since this picture has multiple people and they all have varying skin tones that allude to the fast differences in their looks and thoroughly expresses a tonal and hue gradient within their skin tones; this is not whitewashing in my opinion.

And I was..shocked?.. like..girl, emo kids exist.
(But this argument doesn’t really work here in Korea because..there are no..label such as ‘emo kids’ so no one knows what that means)
I used to wear black all the time and I was not even emo.
And in character designs you NEED some stereotypical images to make it work!

EDIT: I’ve gotten a couple replies stating this rule applies to all art and I agree, I’m just using 3D models as an example since that’s the style the actual movie is done in y’all 💀 but yes, I am aware it applies to any and all work ok
EDIT NUMBER 2: Ok I honestly didn’t think I’d need to clarify THIS MUCH, but the replies to my original comment proved me wrong so here I go.
My take would be the same in 2d art tbh. If you add a very strong light to a drawing with a light mode layer, then the colors would get brighter

As a Brazilian, I can say that the term "gringo" is truly used as a slang to call people that came from outside our country. We don't use this in a bad way, it's just a slang
As an artist, and someone familiar with color theory, the people on Twitter have broken me
the word gringo comes from the words "Green Go" which were chanted by latinos to United States military men when they entered countries to intervene with our politics.
Last time I checked, we like to tease our own a lot. Not really meant to hurt another. :/
The word is actually far older and was used in the 1700 to denote foreigns in the ports of Spain and Portugal. Comes from a very accented pronunciation of "Griego" = "gringo"

It's so stupid yet not unrealistic by Twitter standards. People gonna be tryna "fix" him by givin him a fade or some shi 💀
Bruh not a fade 💀💀
bruhhh i love your oc!!!!
I have tons of dark skinned characters with blonde/brown hair, because it's based off a fictional kingdom where the people from the kingdom tend to be wavy blondes with darkened skin. I'm sure they'd be 'fixed' like that as well. 😭
@@MohammedAgbadi Ay, thanks a lot!
Bruh I’m literally Hispanic, I find nothing wrong with it. People need to stay in their own lane 🤣🤣🤣
bro!!!!!!
As a fellow Latina myself, no, Gringo IS NOT a slur nor an insult. We don't use it in a degroritary way at all and just say it as a way to refer to north american people (mostly people in the states)
The fact people are saying it is, is just- wow
This! What makes it offensive is the context when used, just like any other word!
Gringo is used as a slur and insult, to say it isnt used as slur/insult, its basically lying to your self.
this reminds me of a piece of warrior cats fanart that i saw on youtube a while back. it was a drawing of an orange cat under blue lighting because they were surrounded by water, which made them a really dull brown. somehow, people did not understand this, and the artist had to literally go in the comments and explain how colors work just so people would stop pointing it out
Brazilian here.
None of these terms are used with a negative connotation, its just lighthearted nicknames.
and (well, at least where i live) people call beauiful black woman as "negona"
I'm not Colombian, but I am latina and I live here since ever. The movie is really popular here, everybody loved it and the latino fanbase - at least from what I saw - was pretty wholesome and welcoming. I can tell you that 99,9% of people who got "offended" by Peppa's skin color or the fanarts are NOT latinos. Those gringos really need to stfu and stop acting like knight armors trying to "protect" minority from the most stupid things.
Edit: plus, gringo is not a slur, don't worry. It means "foreign".
Your use of bully's ost across your vids is brilliant! I can't help but think that you choose to put it at the exact moments that you do! Lovin' it! 😂
hahaha yessss!!!! Glad you like it hahah
Its as if these people ignore globalization and genetics.
I would also think that it would be hard to whitewash myself, but you never know ig.
oh god- i found this so ridiculously unfunnily funny lmao
the concept of whitewashing oneself is just- so- weird
i mean, yeah, it definetely does happen, maybe because of internalised racism (which is sadly still a big problem nowadays that isnt nowhere near as adressed as it should be) or just simply because one doesnt know how colors work, mainly young/inexperienced/begginer artists.
but, even in real life, one's skin tone changes. maybe when there is a lot of sun you get a more dark/tanned skintone but in winter one may get as pale as white toothpaste
and also im really bothered by the idea that all latino people have darker skintones.
as a latino aspiring artist and someone who has been drawing for some years now, i did use to whitewash myself in some of my old art, but i wasnt really trying to hide anything or offend anyone (who would i offend though, myself?), i just simply didnt knew how colors worked and everyone else seemed to have white pale ocs. then i should have one like that too, right?
anyways, ty for sharing your experience, it has really given me something to think about and brought back some memories too, hope you have a nice day!
A wide variety of skin tones??? You a chameleon or something
What the fuck like how they gonna say you racist if you're a person of color yourself. "I can draw MYSELF however the heck I want to, thank you!"
All the love for the artist tho; Even if they were in the wrong, they don't deserve to be harassed, much less death threats.
mannn just sticking my nose in some of these causes headache hahaha, how much more can i take!!! how much terrorrrrr
That’s why I resort to drawing object characters, they don’t have a skin color or anything that could cause an outrage.
This is why I’m scared to show my fanart or AU art publicly. Whole freaking reason.
I mean it ain’t Encanto stuff. But just in general 🙎🏼♀️
Don't be afraid, what is the worst thing that can happen? Little kids with adults body's crying???

The art you showed as a Latino who always struggled with colorism didn’t bother me, yes whitewashing is so serious but the art was just drawn in pastel Colors. People are really sensitive with whitewashing because it happens so much which is understandable but we need to think before accusing people unfairly, shading and the type of colors we use matters a lot!
Los gringos son unos llorones
The artist doesn’t deserve the hate. So unfortunate how twitter teated them
I have had this fanart saved right after I finished Encanto a few months back, and it was honestly one of the prettiest fanart I've ever seen in my life. Not once did it cross my mind that it was whitewashing or anything of the sort. I really feel sorry for the artist, and hope they don't get discouraged and stop drawing all together :(((
honestly this is one of the reasons why whenever i ever draw any person of color, I keep getting that anxious feeling of posting the art and some rando will take it out of context and say I'm some sort of evil cult leader or something for not respecting skin tones or something
Like, BRUH the art is so beautiful and good and the artstyle just makes the color pop out more but like usual there's always groups of people who will make something that was meant to be happy and beautiful into something hateful all of a sudden over their messed up mind set
seriously the artist did not deserve any hate whatsoever
People will never learn these days..Jesus Christ…
nah this done gone too far!
The choice of backround music was amazing. Everything about the video was amazing, but I just had to point that out. Great stuff! keep it up!
twitter is the bane of my existence
looking for a witty batman pun to add here
Since I'm not a person of color I know I can't speak for or over the Latino community about controversial Encanto art, but personally?
(I think I have a pretty good idea of what site all those Tumblr users migrated to...)
ya missed the entire point
i see a lot of comments like this and im a bit confused lol if u state that ur not a POC at the beginning why do u feel the need to inset ur opinion? like this isnt offensive but you will never get skin color and race portrayal . and while i agree this controversy is dumb so are these types of comments lol im glad u drew more diversity but people are making valid criticism if somebody makes a character too light! this art in particularly i (as a POC) think is fine because it’s clearly pastel but comments like these down play white washing
@@halahkk Well, in general latam people don't consider themselves poc and yet we are supposed to be the target of the controversy, so...
@@naolucillerandom5280 yeah ur right about that however this comment also includes they aren’t part of the Latino community either so they’re still don’t need an opinion on this discourse
@@halahkk They're an artist tho, and that's related to the situation.
