- What is the difference between foam and microfiber polishing pads, and why do some pick one over the other, that is the questions that is answered in this video. In this video, I not only explain in detail the properties of a foam and microfiber polishing pad, but I also go into detail on why one is preferred over the other in certain detailing or polishing situations. As a professional auto detailer it is important to understand advancements in the detailing industry like microfiber and foam polishing pads, because pads like these can make you faster, more efficient, and give you better results, and what detailer doesn't want that. I just used my first MF pad with a foam interface. Loved it! the paint was good, I just wanted to use it with wax. What I liked about the MF pad over the foam pad I have used before, the MF pad did a better job of removing the wax in the door and hood gaps. The fibers seemed to just get in the gaps where the foam didn't.

Wilson Auto Detailing Actually I have a question. I found a brand new Dewalt rotary polisher the dw849x for $40 on eBay and I won the bid. Promise I'm a newbie at paint correction and never use the DEA or any of those machines but I'm pretty good with fuel and you know I'm mechanically inclined and I'm used to like buffing things. Question is should I start using that DeWalt or should I start with the da and then move up to the DeWalt? I heard DeWalt is safe at low 600 rpm
I actually own that same rotary polisher and I love it. I have not aired it on the channel yet just because i dont want to let all my cats out of the bag at one time! But I would say go ahead and start using it, and just learn from using, watch some videos, and get some advice, but start practicing with a rotary because you already have it, and they definitely have their place!

Most of the content Luke produces is generally aimed at beginners, i would say. The guy is a teacher by trade as well.. and alot of people get on him and make fun for his talking alot or too much or with extreme enthusiasm. for any beginner such as myself looking for a free flowing fountain of neverending information into the intricacies of several facets of automotive detailing, i would take every word he says as a grant of valuable knowledge. It's literally FREE

My advice for anyone looking to start a pad collection is without the air compressor I’d stick with foam.. I had to sell my beautiful 80 gallon compressor when I moved and cleaning pads without it has been a nightmare. Great video man!

Luke, I've got a question/problem. My cars are in very good condition with exception of light swirl marks from hand washing and winter machine car washes. I used a suggestion from Scott Bly (Dallas Auto Detailing) and I'm using Meguiar's D300 with a light compound orange Lake Country CCS foam pad with a Harbor Freight DA polisher on speed 4-5 out of 6 max. This problem is on both my 2012 black Acura TL and my 2001 Speedway white Vette. Yesterday I washed, clayed, decontaminated, and cleaned with Duplicolor Grease and Wax Remover to remove clay residue. I followed the directions for D300 and the paint looked so smooth and glossy in my garage. Followed up on the Acura with more Duplicolor, two coats of Jescar Color Lock Carnauba Wax and Meguiar's Fast Finish. Then I parked it out in the sun and swirl marks were horrible! The paint is smooth as silk and glossy but the swirl marks are killing me. Today, I did the same prep work on the Vette. After pulling it out in the sun and before waxing, I have the same issue with it. All the swirl marks are still there yet the paint is smooth and glossy. Before polishing, I need to know what I am doing wrong and I've got to get rid of the swirl marks. The paint has light swirl marks and nothing is through the clear coat. Is my arm speed too fast? Too much or too little pressure on the polisher? Using the wrong products for my paint? I've watched Apex, Dallas Paint and your videos at length to get up the courage to try a DA polisher and all I have is a mess on my hands. Your thoughts or guidance would be appreciated very much. @@wilsonautodetailing Hi Luke, Right now in Kansas it's cloudy with rain coming soon. Even using my handheld fluorescent light I can't see any swirl marks. Hopefully the sun will come out tomorrow and I 'll send you some pics of both cars in the sunlight. The direct sunlight really makes the swirl marks show up. Thanks so much for offering to help me.

How about Scholl S20 ?
I have managed to remove pretty heavy swirl marks from careless washings in 3 passes.
Used wool pad but with wool been as human straight thin hairs.
Pad went dry in seconds. Every half of the pass had to reapply S20 and moisture pad with spray water.
Loved the results but process and amount of product made me cry. Tried medium firm thick none flexi pad but for noob me it was jumping in my hands and i could not get to hard to reach , places and bends ....
Could you please recommend some flexi pad for Scholl S20 1 step compound.
I need flexy so can press on the edge and get it flexing over bends.

for a beginner like me should I stick with foam pads first? I actually have both microfiber and foam because I went into panic mode and thought just to get both because I will probably need to learn how to use them at some time.
Also, how do you know what type of pad or amount of product for hard paint and soft paint. Thats where Im confused at right now. not sure if im suppose to use more product and go slower with the DA or faster and less for soft (im pulling my hair out slowly trying to understand) Haven't seen any videos that actually explain and show this part of detailing.
Well do not stress, I will make a video about hard and soft paint for you, but at the end of the day, I think that is something that comes with some good experience, kind of understanding which make of cars tend to have softer and harder paint, but its not a HUGE deal in the grand scheme of things so I don't think you should get caught up in it :/

For a beginner stick with foam it won’t cut as fast as microfiber does. Foam is very safe for paint as long as you keep it moving on the surface. Prime the pad initially like buttering bread. Then put 2-3 dime size drops around the pad after that. Make sure you clean the pad frequently when it builds up with clear coat and excess polish. You will most likely need 4-6 foam pads for a car detail when polishing. Arm speed and DA speed is crucial but it’s something you just kind of learn. I’m new to UA-cam and will be doing polishing videos come spring once it gets warmer here in Indiana. I use all Griot’s Garage products and they are very safe for beginners.

Regarding the harbor freight pads I think they are great, theyre not the best by any means, but what is the best really? I experiment with so many different pads all the time, I try to tell everyone to do the same so you get a good feel of everything
I have a microfiber cutting pad for my orbital that can be used for compounding, cutting, polishing, and finishing. It's about 1/4" foam underneath and gives amazing results. I love it, can't complain at all... My boss and co-workers are a little jealous lol....#automagic

Few days ago I first time try Mequiars 5" microfiber with M 101 ,with Rupes 15 mark 2 ,it is a new dimension for me amazing results ,and afetr cuting stage almost swirl free finish Only thing in this story is i price of microfiber disc here in europe it is expensive for our standard.

Honestly theres no way you can go wrong when you have that pad attached to most beginner DA polishers so I would not worry about it! You did good!
@@wilsonautodetailing I got LC MF cutting pads and don't like em after a few passes on a small section I lift pad off and its completely flat how is a mf pad meant to cut if its just flattening out after only a few passes

Yes and foam as well!! Lots of differences, mainly the friction that a rotary produces because it spins on a single axis is much greater

randy ward you can use even dish soap and hot water or a mild detergent and water
I use Griot’s Garage Microfiber and Foam pad cleaner. I pre soak my pads with it then throw it in the washing machine. Griot’s foam pads are machine wash safe. Easy as pie!
In between passes, compressed air. You walk up, blow it out, get back to work.
At the end of the day when you're cleaning up, any all purpose cleaner will work. Some pads can handle the washer. I use mostly Lake Country and Americana Global and they seem to handle the wash cycles just fine. Remember, these pads have to handle being on your polisher spinning at high speed with pressure applied. As long as you're buying quality stuff, they're pretty durable.

In the Chemical Guys range, there are two types of foams used.
European foams:
yellow
orange
white
red
American "filter" foams:
green (60ppi)
blue (70ppi)
black (80ppi)
The European foams more use density over porosity to dictate aggression levels. The American foams use ppi. In my experience, the green pad will out cut both the orange, and yellow because it's pores are larger. It's density sort of makes it "fiberous", almost like a "macrofiber" pad if one ever existed.
An interesting note, is that Buff and Shine manufacturers both Chemical Guys and Griot's pad lines.

All microfiber cutting or finishing pad systems is a failure including the special compounds and polish. It does not cut fast like wool or effective like foam.
I have tried all microfiber pads through the last few years without any positive results.
