- In this video, I explain car waxes versus car sealants, and I demonstrate how they are applied, when they are applied, and the visual difference between them! Can you apply a car sealant and wax? Do you apply a car sealant before or after a wax? All these questions and more are answered with this video! In the auto detailing world, the words sealant and wax are used very interchangeably, however they are different, so for beginner detailers this can be very frustrating! I aim to clear up the confusion in car waxes vs car sealants, by explaining and demonstration the difference between a wax and sealant. Check out this video, and never be confused again on the difference between a car sealant and car wax!

Without even lighting shining over the paint it is extremely hard to tell what is what. Thank you though.
Awesome video. Your an expert at that . It's nice listening to someone who knows what he's talking about. Thanks
I do my own detailing bud, question, I just washed my car yesterday at spray off car wash, made the mistake of not using chamois on it, had white spots all over it, took my 3 hours to get those out, any advice next time?
I’ve heard use sealant first then wax
Call me stupid but i just want to know what makes car shiny
I just sealed a car for the first time yesterday and today I see this video! Good stuff brother. God is good.
Irving so great to hear from you! So glad you got the opportunity to do that the other day that's exciting!! Love that the video can be of help to you! Keep me updated on your detailing world, I love to hear about it!

Hey Luke, GREAT video!!!Thank you for explaining the differences between sealers and waxes. I have a brand new car and just want to protect it from the harsh Michigan winter. Going to seal my car ASAP. Keep up the good work. 👍👍
Compound, clay and polish all are abrasive.
Should only be used as needed where needed.
Glaze fills in scratches.
Sealant seals everything and should offer UV protection and shine.
Wax protects everything and has UV protection.
10 steps
1.) Rinse car
2.) No touch wash soak
3.)Touch wash, use mulitple clean mits instead of wash/rince buckets.
4.) Dry
IF NEEDED WHERE NEEDED
5.) COMPOUND
6.) CLAY
7.) POLISH BUFFS COMPOUND SCRATCHES DOWN
NOTE SOME SAY TO USE EITHER compound or clay. SOME SAY CLAY BEFORE COMPOUND. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH ON THIS.
8.) GLAZE fills in scratches
9.) Sealant
10.) Wax
Inbetween details optional
Detailing spray
Detail clean interior and leather treat once per month and or more as needed.
Rince car weekly
Light wash monthly
Detail spray if desired
Detail every 4 months at the change of the 4 seasons for optimum protection.
Every 6 moths otherwise.
If lazy one a year. 🙃😉

Right!!😂 The same thoughts with too much foods.... Hell who saw coffee plant berries or cacao pods and thought... Hell yeah this would be nice if the meat is removed, seed fermented then dried, toast them almost burnt, grind them and then add them to boiling water...🥴🫠 Too much things had ro happen if it was just an accidental discovery 😂😂.
Thanks for posting this video; it's always informative and entertaining.
That Meguiars isn't a wax, they simply use the term for their consumer products because people don't know what a sealant is.

A sealant actually fills in the paint's pores, because although it feels smooth, paint is still porous unless it's "sealed."
A good sealant should ALWAYS leave it looking like it just got a great clay barring and wax job.
I may be a girl, but I grew up in the car business and cars are "kind of" my thing... HAHA!
Sealants can last for many years depending on the product (plus depending on the company they're can be great warranties- we had one with a seven year warranty and it really did work). Although I had all my cars sealed (fabric done and fully undercoated as well) prior to delivery, I still chose to wax it at least every 4-6 months depending on the weather, just to give it an extra glossy finish. I mean, when you're spending thousands and thousands of dollars on a new vehicle, why not protect it. I always do everything to protect my vehicles because I did have issues the one time I didn't (paint, and the engine pulled out of my...UGHHHH)
They do recommend after sealing it though, to let it sit for a good solid 24hrs, so the product can cure and be there best it can be. I wouldn't recommend people wax it immediately following a sealant though, give it a day or two at least.
😊
Kathgoose R what sealant would you recommend?
@@soulsweet17 that's hard to say. My family owns a new car dealership, so I've always had it done through them. They've used either Zurich shield (paint sealant, fabric protection and undercoating), or a new one that's used a jets called Cilajet. I haven't had it done for like 4 years, so I wouldn't know what to recommend right now.
Let me ask you this, what type of vehicle are you going to put it on? And what color/type of paint do you have (flat glossy paint, metallic, pearlescent, etc). Also, is this your daily driver? And lastly do you want to apply it yourself, or are you looking to have it professionally done (both options will make certain products available differently).
Sorry for all the questions, but this will help me try to figure it out.
Goose K I’d like to know where I can get this sealant that will last several years
Nice yard. I'm jelly.
White residue from compounds, polishes, sealants or wax on textured trim??? One of the great mysteries of detailing is that pretty much all waxes and sealants say to avoid textured plastic or rubber trim. We’ve all done it. It’s nearly impossible to avoid at least some overlap. Especially if you’re using a buffer. I can’t remember which product I used when I figured this out but the white residue that was left on my trim would not come off. We’re talking using a toothbrush with soap and water, isopropyl alcohol, denatured alcohol and out of desperation I even tried a Q-tip with acetone. Nothing would touch it. So I decided to proceed with refreshing the plastic trim with Mother’s Back to Black. Completely removed the white residue no problem. Beat to avoid overlapping onto those textured trim areas but if you do, Back to Black has your back.
A lot of talking without much actual understanding of what a sealant is or how it works vs a wax, and if you really wanted to know the difference that same door shoulsd be viewed at one month and 3 months with no other treatments other than washing, and the tape strips devoid of any product.
Nothing looks glossier better on a clean polished paint surface than nothing at all. What surface coatings do is keep that paint surface cleaner longer.
Both sealants and waxes stick to paint. Both are safe to apply to paint. Waxs stick by melting onto the surface and forming a film that gets into fine scratches. A seaant chemically bonds to paint. Unless applied in a overly thick coating, seatants conform to the surface of scratches which softens the sharp discontinuity at the edge of a scratch, but does not fill them.
Both products perform their primary function by repelling water,.
Waxes require buffing to soften the wax. A material that requires buffing beyoind that needed to remove excess product contains something other than a sealant.
Waxes and sealant can both be synthetic materials. There is nothing intrinsically better or worse about a wax being synthetic or natural. The advantages of a synthecized material is that its properties are intentional, not a fortuitous accident.
Synthetic sealants are designed to have greater endurance than waxes when exposed to UV and water. Synthetic waxes are designed to have greater endurance than natural waxes when exposed to UV and water.
The failure mode of wax is crystalization. The failure mode of a sealant is by abrasion.
Period.
thank you professor pssst3
This guy is right though I used a sealant and it didn't hide the swirl marks at all. It just doesn't seem to fill anything in. I have to use a wax to really fill in, but i hate waxes because they dont last and they have a sticky feel to it and dust and dirt just stick to the wax so my car gets dirty again in a couple days
@@joesmith201212 90% of Sealants dont hide scratches or swirl marks. They dont have fillers in them which some waxes do. Fillers is what hides some light scratches. If you notice on sealant bottles it usually says to polish or compound your car before you apply the sealant because sealants will show scratches/swirl marks more. Sealants job is to protect your paint for 4-6 months. Waxes only protect for 2 weeks to 2 months. There is some waxes that will last 3-4 months and those are the collinite waxes. Collinite 915 and 476 waxes will last the longest. Collinite 845 wont last as long plus has a strong smell to it kinda like Raid ant spray. Also collinite 845 doesnt like being mixed with sealants. If you apply a wax on top of a sealant and 1-2 days later you notice alot of sweating or streaks on your paint it means the wax does not work with the sealant.
@@bf3Willief23 oh OK thank you for the info I needed that
@@joesmith201212 he was talking about Griot's Garage one step sealant that does that. Usually, sealants do not do anything for swirls. You would need polishing compounds or similar products to get rid of swirls.
Loved your little sister. That was 😂
I’ve never waxed my car but do you wax it right after your wash your car or it can be dirty while waxing ?
@@elizabethramirez8995 Waxing should be done after the car is washed and completely dried. Otherwise, it will not hold. Regards.

Thank you thank you!! Great info. I learned a lot. I only use a sealant twice a year. Have you ever used Driven Polish. It’s great.
Are you familiar with Commodore Coatings Molecular Adhesion Paint sealant ? This is based out of North Chesterfield, Va.
Sorry but in the vernacular of commissioned salesmen you "cheated the demo" by not applying all three in the same fashion, and after that you come across a shill for Griot's Garage products. But I realized how many people even with his disclaimers… will come at him and bitch. People and the internet are ridiculous! I’m back to liking his content again. There is no reason to waste so much energy on disclaimers and then people still coming at you about it. It’s so draining, yes even as a subscriber. Sorry for the rant!
Wouldn't you wax and then seal
That's what I thought too but I am understanding from these videos today that the sealant is to protect the paint's clearCoat layer from damage so it would go upon the naked paint surface. Then you *can* add a wax layer on top of it after getting the sealant part done.
Would a sealant applied on white paint that maybe hasn't had build up removed as well ad it should be cause the white paint to yellow over time?
sealant for me. I use Wolfgang's deep gloss sealant. Amazing stuff!
I agree with u about the application method...however Scott from Dallas paint correction makes a good point that most retail waxes are cleaner waxes. These cleaner waxes have abrasives that need to be activated by going in a circular motion. Now a regular non-cleaner wax can be applied either in straight lines or circular...doesn't matter
Alex Bryan very interesting, I'll have to look into that
Willson is the lost son of scott
Great stuff.... Double thumbs up for the video crusher @9:40 :p
can wax be used on ceramic coated paint as you have done to the portion you used sealant on

Fusso wax. Everybody has their own fav. Most important is that there is something on the paint to protect the finish.
I never used it but from what i've seen it's the only wax i've seen to outlast most sealants. I'm using seal n shine every 4 to 6 months.

Wilson should change his name to McCreepy!
Very informative video. Thanks for making it very clear. May I just ask if the duration of protecion of both sealant and wax will be reduced or instantly removed when the car gets wet like exposed to the rain?
thank you Kim! I appreciate that! Sealants are going to last through snow, rain, heat, etc.. though of course A LOT of precipitation is going to cause the sealant to break down faster than if there was no precipitation, but thats obvious, waxes will last through the elements to a certain point, but really the main difference is just that in any case, sealants are going to last longer than waxes. But it would be cool to get two cars that have the same sealant, put one where there is no precipitation, and one where there is a lot, and see how long each lasts, just to compare, but as a rule, most sealants last somewhere between 6 months and 1 year
Wilson Auto Detailing thanks a lot man! I’ll take your advice :)

You do a good job of explaining the obvious to the oblivious. That's a compliment.
To be able to explain a thing in its base components in context that is easy to understand seems to be a hard thing to do. I've been an instructor/teacher of several things in my life and it takes a certain level of understanding and comprehension to be able to convey an idea and/or concept. Good job.
And I like the idea of a sealant and then a hard wax. Looks good there and is what I'm going to do to my new GMC Terrain, right after a clay down.
You should explain a glaze as well.
Jeffrey B will do
Aren't you suppose to let the sealant cure for 30-60 minutes?
Bill Buss that is definitely a great question, you could say the same thing about certain waxes, that you need to let it haze over before wiping off, but there are many detailers who argue that that is not really necessary, but with this specific situation because I am working it in with a buffer and not by hand the buffer it's self is going to work in the sealant to the paint, not to mention I am working it in with the dual action buffer for more like 2 1/2 to three minutes, so you could argue that that is actually allowing it to cure to the paint even more so
Decent video. Just a tip, to see difference just remove the painters tape😊
Can sealent be applied without a machine. Just by hand maybe?

I dont :D
carnauba is the best!
Sing little birdie!!! Sing your heart out!!!!!!!!! Tweeeeeeeeeeett!!!!!!!
If, as you say, a sealant seals the paint, how can a wax "soak into" the paint if applied after sealing? Otherwise, thanks for the video.
That’s actually one of the reasons I don’t do that. In my opinion applying a wax over a sealant really is not effective. If anything you are more or less protecting the sealant 😬 what next? A wax protector?
@@wilsonautodetailing Color me confused. Is this not your video? Didn't you suggest in the video that you can go ahead and wax over the sealant but then, in this response, you totally contradict yourself!
