    I'm impressed with your 3D modelling skills.
    I had a 200mm shaft extension on my Simucube 2 Pro, but I've later rebuilt the rig and taken it off - due to mechanical concerns.

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  Рік тому

      Thanks Henrik, it was fun learning the software and completely overdesigning the bracket! I'm curious about your mechanical concerns about the extension - was there any evidence of risk? Overheating, noise, vibration, visual signs of concern?
      Would you run a 200mm extender with a support bracket?

    • @henriksteamroller
      @henriksteamroller Рік тому +1

      @@DrAlanQuan I believe Simucube recommends that you don't use extenders longer than 100mm.
      My worry was when guests go in the rig, they will likely brace themselves on the wheel when getting in and out - like you often do in a real car. And those forces get multiplied a lot when you get some cantilever-action going.
      A support bracket could help, but I'm not sure 3D printed would be strong enough 🤷‍♂
      I removed the extender when I rebuilt my rig, and I saw a way to modify it so I didn't need the 200m extension anymore

    Hey Alan - awesome video and result! Im feeling you on the 3d printed Z ring you really had to do a lot of back n forth!. i was lucky some years ago - it was version 12.b or alike from a different dude and it worked perfect- i still have 2. But your Custom support bracket is impressive! Really good idea and well designed! You say its rugged, i belive you but my experience is that forces from the wheelbase could brake it anyway, and i have worked with bearings for 20 years and that bearing will deff will last longer :P
    Looking forward to race you soon again :)
    thx for the video!
    Ps. that shaft looks shiny!

      @DrAlanQuan  11 місяців тому

      Hi Daniel great to hear from you again. Thanks for your kind words - I'm hopeful that since the shaft extender itself is already so rigid, the support bracket is really there for decoration and not really subject to significant forces - but again I'm no engineer so it's pure guesswork. I'll let you know if I encounter any issues.
      The extender is fantastic! Really happy with it. I'm watching your latest video now 👍

    It is not possible to convince anyone the Z-Ring is a terrible idea. No matter how many broken pins and failed rings, the sheeple will not be told how much of a risk they are taking.

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  11 місяців тому +1

      Hi Elvis, thanks for getting in touch ❤️ I've been in touch with both RK Engineering and TS Customs who make these extenders, and the consensus is that up to 75mm there's no need for a support. If you put a podium hub and a third party wheel (as encouraged by Fanatec) you pretty much extend the shaft by about that much so the wheelbase should be able to handle it standard. The support bracket does also add bulk around the shaft extender which can limit how low you place your monitor if that's something you want - so there's some drawbacks to using a support bracket to consider as well.
      That being said, it would be fun to design a support bracket for 75mm length and I could do it, but there's a lot of other projects I'm working on that are taking priority at the moment. Maybe you could design and share a 75mm support bracket!

    Your Seat does not fit to a Formula Seating position! You have always to bend your shoulder forward and your Head is not good supported... do have no problems?
    My Z-Ring v15 was absolute perfect, but i printed it with 102% flow and then minimal grind. you took on the first z-Ring the wrong lenght variant?!

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  11 місяців тому +1

      Hi Eddy. I rest my head on the headrest when I race - I'm not too fussed about what to call the seating position - it is what it is, it kind of feels like formula, I'm happy.
      As for the Z ring, yes I've heard a lot of people had no issues with it - I found it completely stopped my wheel from going on because of the wrong shape.
      As for length - when I downloaded the files from Zappadoc they include both lengths in the one .zip file, and the website recommends to try the long one first (at least it did when I read it)
      Thanks for commenting! Stay tuned, lots of cool stuff coming

    On why the wheel does not go on...did you calibrate your filament. over extrusion can be the reason it's not fitting.

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  6 місяців тому

      Hey there, no I did not - this video was filmed when I was a complete novice and did zero calibrations at all. Interesting thought about over extrusion.
      Everything that I designed was dimensionally accurate when I did measure the products from that printer on default profiles (Prusaslicer and a MK3s), and the eyeball test in my opinion still stands (trapezoid on the QR, rectangle on the Q ring)
      I don't want to print another Z ring on my fully calibrated printer just to check, since the Z ring has other design issues which I've addressed in my Q ring (a ground-up redesign which is on my website)
      Thanks for commenting, I haven't thought about the Z ring in a long time, it's nice to reassess the situation again having learned a lot since then 👍

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  Рік тому +1

      @@raphaelliu68 I've had the Z ring fitted for 3 days now! Can't really talk much about longevity but I will say this. The Z ring isn't really a load bearing part. The indexing of the wheel to the shaft is handled by the 5 spring loaded balls and the single trapezoidal key of the QR interfacing with the corresponding detents on the metal shaft. The Z ring bevel just adds onto the back of those, but it's not a primary source of indexing - and even then, the forces on the Z ring are all compressive which is good.
      Time will tell, and others who have used the Z ring for longer may have better insight - but I don't see any issue with longevity based on my understanding of physics and material science.

    This for CSL DD when?

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  10 місяців тому

      As I understand it, never. The build quality of the CSL vs Podium is vastly different - plastic vs metal motor shaft construction - as well as quality control (standard CSL shafts can be seen to be poorly centred).
      The CSL just isn't built well enough to extend.
