Another Great job. I never get tired saying that. I have been using the Lee system for a while but I am intrigued by Haida. I like the concept of the empty drop in. Its such a cleaver way of stopping light leak without having to remove the holder. I have had some nice results using the Lee setup along with the Big Stopper 10 stop filter. Overall, I love the drop in systems because in my opinion they allow greater flexibility.
Thanks, Phil! Always appreciate your comments. I totally agree with you about the drop-in. Have you seen the new Lee filter system? They did a redesign.
Excellent presentation again, Gerald. As always! :) I agree about using holders. If you are deep into landscape or you know you are going need lots of filters anyway, best to go with holders. Years ago, I found this out. No Haida brands then. However, for simple use, the standard filter will do. Mostly, owning one CPL would the best way to go. But for graduated filters, or if you want more control, yes, the use of holders is the best. As you have shown, you gain the flexibility and control. It may be cheaper and lighter too, though cheaper may not be true as for sure, one will tend to buy more filters. Even if they are cheaper than round-screw types, you start buying more of different types.
nice and informative video. there is no locking system to the holder? is there anyway to lock the holder? or is it strong enough to avoid movement of the holder?
I have had the Haida M10 system for about two months. I previously used the Lee Filter system. I really think Haida got the CPL right. Having a drop in CPL means I don’t get fingerprints on the CPL because I can lift it by the top. When I use a CPL I usually set it to cover the bottom of the frame. That way it works great when shooting water like rivers, waterfalls, and lakes. Having the adjustment wheel on the top of the CPL means it can be adjusted without fear of touching the glass. Once I got the CPL adjusted the way I liked it I was able to use a Sharpie metallic marker and mark both the spinning portion of the polarizer with the stationary bottom part of the filter, thus ensuring I can get the CPL on the correct way quickly when needed. If you live in an area of high rainfall like I do (Washington State, USA) having the CPL recessed in the holder makes it harder for raindrops to get on the front of the CPL. I also like the way the adaptor rings screw onto the filter threads of my lenses. It just seems like the threads engage faster than the Lee system. After having very good results with the basic M10 Kit I ordered the Haida combination 6 Stop ND / Circular polarizer and was impressed by the accurate colors it produced. I think it was really a great move to combine the CPL in the same filter as the 6 Stop ND. So next I bought the Haida 10 Stop drop in filter and again was impressed with accurate colors. I have been using My Lee 0.9 Soft GND, Lee 0.6 Hard GND, Lee 0.9 Reverse GND with the Haida M10 bracket. Although initially, they were hard to fit into the grooves of the M10 filter holder after use they now slide in better. My results are fine using the Lee filters (Not ND) with the M10 system. I also tried my Lee 6 and 10 stop filters in the M10, but they fit way too snug for my liking. I guess I could have removed the foam to make them fit, but I was unwilling to do that. If I had to summarize in one word what I liked about the M10 system, it would be usability. I’m 59 and recently went on a 12-mile hike that got me huffing and puffing. I was able to put the adaptor ring on the lens, mount the holder and change filters much easier than I could of with the Lee System. I do know that Lee has updated their filter holder, but it still looks like you can easily get fingerprints on the CPL when adjusting it. Now if I was 30 years old, in top shape this would not be an issue, but for someone older these improvements are noticeable. Hopefully after a year or so the Haida M10 and filters will still be impressive.
@@ibarrabenjamin1 There is one slot for the circular drop in filters. There is one slot closest to your lens for the circular drop in filters and two slots in front for the 100mmx150mm NDs/GNDs. So there is a total of 3 slots. I have the Haida combination 6 Stop ND/circular polarizer and the Haida 10 stop ND filters (Without circular polarizer). So you can use the Haida NDs and still have room for one or two other 100mm x 150mm filters. You can also use the circular polarizer alone or slip in the empty drop in filter to keep the Haida Filter holder on your camera without any filter. So the answer to your second question is the one combination 6 stop ND with a circular polarizer is how you stack an ND with a polarizer. The Haida 10 stop ND filter has no built-in circular polarizer so you can't stack a 10 stop ND and a polarizer as far as I know. Hope this helps.

I don't think they do. I like matte box systems too. In my head though I always think of that as the line between a video system and a photo system. I'd say Haida leans more toward photo.
Nice system. I like the drop-in idea, the stackable options and the streamlined footprint. Are there any other similar systems available for fisheye lenses? (This Haida system won't work with fisheyes as they don't have the threaded lenses for screw-on systems). Is there any kind of "clamp-on" system that would work with a variety of lens diameters? That seems to be an elegant solution for a single filter system for all/most applications...

You talk a lot about how you'd recommend this to landscape photographers. I get that the graduated filter is a big advantage for them. But isn't there a utility to a drop-in system for more run and gun shooters who still want to avoid the pitfalls of variable ND?
@@geraldundoneFair enough, though I feel like a good handheld rig tends to be bigger anyway for added stability. The DP I work with a lot uses a very fancy mount for his graduated filters you may have heard of. It's called "gaff tape." 🤣
The filters themselves are more or less the same (the relatively new glass ones). Cokin Nuances series are really good filters, but overpriced imo. Nisi and Haida are at the same level of quality, both excellent, but Nisi filters are priced higher. Lee, I have no experience with, I found them too expensive when I was starting out. Later, when I could afford better filters, there were brands like Haida, Nisi etc that were making as good or better filters for less. S, I went with Haida and Nisi for different filters. For glass filters today, there are so many excellent options, its hard to go wrong with any of them honestly. As long as you don't pick a really cheap, sub-$50 filter. Names that come to mind right now are: Haida, Nisi, Cokin (not their old filters, but, new ones like Nuances), Rollei.. even K&F make some decent ones. I find, Lee, Formatt Hitech, Breakthrough etc to be massively overpriced for no tangible improvement in quality. Of all, as of today, I find Haida filters to be the most reasonably priced while offering excellent quality.
What is the widest lens you can shoot with on the GH5, using native lenses, using the M10 system? I tend to mostly shoot on the native 12-60 that came with the GH5, plus have the 8-18 and a 12mm prime. These would be the affected lenses if the 16mm wide-angle limitation applies to Leica's native 4/3 lenses as well. I think I know the answer but I think I'm hoping for a miracle after rewatching Crop Lenses on Crop Bodies. I'm guessing I should probably look at the M15, but here is hoping. I shoot mostly video, if it makes a difference, but have been shooting stills more often. I bought the GH5 for my first camera just a few months after it came out and have been on the eternal quest for all the right gear ever since. I have a bag full of circular filters that vignette like crazy and have been looking for a solution. Appreciate all your videos, and of course any info you may provide on this specific topic. Thanks
I don't have lenses wide enough on the GH5 to give you a full answer, but 12mm is fine. My hunch is that you might be able to get close to 8mm, since 16mm limit would be 8mm on M43. But I don't have an 8mm to test. Sorry.
Thanks for the great video. I’m just in the market for a filter system. How many drop-in filters can you place in the holder? What if you want to combine polarizer and solid ND filters? Do you have to get also a 100mm filter to allow for that combination? Thanks
Can you start your next video with the following sentence "Syria is not dead, it's were people started believing in Phoenix, and they still do" please? Thank you.
For anyone that's interested - I have tried NISI, Lee and Formatt-hitech filer holders and have at the moment got close to where I want to be by using the H&Y holder and then using their Magnetic Mounts using the Formatt filters. What I miss about the NISI and Lee is they do a lens cap for the filter rings.. I don't miss the vignetting with wide lenses (which I don't get now) and I am using a Silicone cover for my lenses instead so I don't have to keep taking off the rings - although I wish I had a solid lens cap option. The H&Y drop in CP filter seems to work well and seems to have a similar design to the Haida. I was looking at the Breakthrough magnetic system also as an option but they are currently redesigning their system and I believe it's due out later this year. They have enabled stacking of filters and a magnetic lens cap. I'd love to try it out when it's available to compare as I think they have a compact solution.
Curious what you liked more about the Haida then the Lee. I ask becuase I own the Lee system, but was thinking about buying a second system and you peaked my curiousity. thx
Pretty minor stuff. I wouldn't change systems over it. But I liked the polish and the refinement on the mechanisms. Just felt like more my style. But Lee is also doing a new redesign model with the same modern attitude in mind.
There is a rumor going around these parts that Gerald action reviews based on the needs of the people; if so, we must know what this Nutri-Bullet system is like and how it can make more efficient meal prep for photographers.
The Haida system looks like a great balance between simplicity and durability. Also, the buttons work well when you are wearing gloves, as a Canadian I’m sure you appreciate that. But I still want the Wine Country because it’s so pretty.
Haha. Can't argue with that. Although, I've never been a fan of wood in that setting. I prefer metal for electronics. But the wood is nice in the cold.
I had only heard of the Wine Country because of Ted, and now I think you've convinced me to get the Haida system, even though I don't see myself needing a filter system any time soon...well, there goes my money
Yeah, Haida offers a "Clear Night" drop-in filter as well as a front insert filter. But you can also use any other brand filters as long as they're 100mm wide by 2mm thick.
Gerald Undone thanks for the update, I want to buy a filter set but don’t know what to get can u recommend what should I get for the first time filter kit....I was also thinking of the wine country filter but undecided

When I record 60p with Ninja V, auto focus is not working at all. Can you check if that issue happens with your a7iii and Ninja or not ? Thanks and very appreciate for your works.
Thank you for posting this video in response to our requests. One question: if you use a drop in solid ND you can't use the drop in circular polarizer anymore?
You're very welcome! Correct, you can only use one drop-in at a time. So, if you want a polarizer, then use that for the drop-in obviously, then you can use a solid ND as an insert on the front, and then something else in front of that if you wanted to.
I could see it being useful for landscape pans in video. And timelapses where you want a slow shutter. And then you could use the drop-in filters for swapping solid NDs if you don't like the variable kind. It's mostly for photography, but those are some areas for video that would work. And the holder could be useful if you like to use diffusion filters when you shoot video too.
A video i would like is alternative mic and audio in options for the Sony A7iii.... My mic port has died on me twice and I have only had the camera since November I wish we could attach microphones via the Multi-Interface Shoe! I know I know... the Sony has proprietary mics which can but they are overpriced! And I already own a Rode Video Mic Pro+! Gerald if you know of an adapter or alternative solutions I would greatly appreciate it! Side note I have considered recording audio externally but I am dumb and worry that it will be hard to sync the audio in post.
Thanks for the suggestion, Andrew! Honestly, recording externally and syncing in post isn't hard at all. I do it for every one of my videos. Once you get the hang of it, it only takes an extra 2-3 minutes and you'll have better sound quality.
Only briefly. It seems pretty similar. A couple nicer touches on the Haida, but a lot of other stuff in common. I need to do a deeper dive at Nisi filters in general. They've been coming up a lot more frequently lately.

For sure! It's definitely faster than screwing on different NDs. Might be a bit large for some people's preference though for run'n'gun.
@@geraldundoneFair enough, though I feel like a good handheld rig tends to be bigger anyway for added stability. The DP I work with a lot uses a very fancy mount for his graduated filters you may have heard of. It's called "gaff tape." 🤣
Video Greeting: "I'm Gerald Undone, that's not dual-pixel autofocus, that's my wife! "
Haha. Fair. 😃
Can you also do a review on Breakthrough Photography ND/GND filter.
There is NISI, Lee, Cokin (they have glass filters now) system. Is Haida better?
That's pretty cool - but I already have the lucroit system :
Nice! How do you like it? I like the little barn doors for it.
@@geraldundone LOL it works really well actually, but yeah it's just annoying carrying everything around
Sorry.
@@geraldundone Awesome. Thanks for the incredibly quick response. Don't you sleep? LOL
Only on Tuesdays. 😜
Did you say hi to Heimdall for me?
Of course! 😂👍
Thanks for the great video. I’m just in the market for a filter system. How many drop-in filters can you place in the holder? What if you want to combine polarizer and solid ND filters? Do you have to get also a 100mm filter to allow for that combination? Thanks
The main body holds ONE drop-in filter, and then you can stack 100mm filters in front of that.
Can you start your next video with the following sentence "Syria is not dead, it's were people started believing in Phoenix, and they still do" please? Thank you.
What is that from?
Sooo many systems out there! Thanks for sharing your experiences. Helpful!
Hahaha. 😂👏
Hahaha. Only get it if you're going to use it. Otherwise I'll feel bad. 😃
Cool
Great review. May i share this video on the Haida Austria Facebook page?
Thanks! And yeah, definitely.
can you use a twilight filter on this m10 system
Yeah, Haida offers a "Clear Night" drop-in filter as well as a front insert filter. But you can also use any other brand filters as long as they're 100mm wide by 2mm thick.
Gerald Undone thanks for the update, I want to buy a filter set but don’t know what to get can u recommend what should I get for the first time filter kit....I was also thinking of the wine country filter but undecided
Great video ! Btw, have you ever tested the a7rii/a7iii with Atomos Ninja V ? As my current problem is when you call Memory by change dial to 1/2, if record with Ninja V, the auto focus ( wide/ zone) not working at all with all record setting , included full HD 24p or 60p ? The auto focus is totally fine with Ninja V if change dial to Video mode.
I have a couple videos on the quirks of the Sony a7 III and the Atomos Ninja V. I'd recommend you check them out!

I’ve already checked all them out, but unfortunately my issue not included in your video, as all issues mentioned in your video related with 4K or 120p. When I record 60p with Ninja V, auto focus is not working at all. Can you check if that issue happens with your a7iii and Ninja or not ? Thanks and very appreciate for your works.
Lmao the intro
Thank you for posting this video in response to our requests. One question: if you use a drop in solid ND you can't use the drop in circular polarizer anymore?
You're very welcome!
Correct, you can only use one drop-in at a time. So, if you want a polarizer, then use that for the drop-in obviously, then you can use a solid ND as an insert on the front, and then something else in front of that if you wanted to.
@@geraldundone Thanks Gerald
The new Lee100 system is pretty nice. I really like the new holder
Oh nice! I haven't had a chance to use the new one yet. Thanks for sharing.
Meu sonho é um kit desse... 😁
would you use this just for still or video as well?
I could see it being useful for landscape pans in video. And timelapses where you want a slow shutter. And then you could use the drop-in filters for swapping solid NDs if you don't like the variable kind. It's mostly for photography, but those are some areas for video that would work. And the holder could be useful if you like to use diffusion filters when you shoot video too.
Great content. Btw TEM sent me.
Thanks, Paul! Cheers.
Nice to see you outside lol.
😜🌞😎
Have you compared it to the Nisi system. I just found Nisi, and their 75mm system, which is a perfect size for m43 cameras, seems awesome!
Only briefly. It seems pretty similar. A couple nicer touches on the Haida, but a lot of other stuff in common. I need to do a deeper dive at Nisi filters in general. They've been coming up a lot more frequently lately.
+1 would like to see the simmod variable nd tested
