Haida m10: Better than Lee Filters?

  • I use Lee filters, it's no secret. But, Haida has come out with a new photography filter system called the m10. So, I tried it out.
    My Instagram: bit.ly/BvSInsta
    My Camera Gear: bit.ly/BvSGear
I like the Lee filters system, but I've constantly wondered if there was a better way - and maybe one that was cheaper. I honestly feel like the Lee filters are really high quality. But, the system itself is a little bit flimsy and over-priced.
So, when Haida reached out to me this past week to test their new system, called the Haida m10, I jumped at the chance.
And it turns out that I'm extremely happy with the Haida m10 filter system. It's very innovative. It's light. And best of all the quality of the images is fantastic.

Hi Brendan, I am using Haida M10 right now. The polarizer filter is actually included in the filter set and there is a nob on the cpl drop in so you can rotate it independently, which is much much better and convenient than LEE system.

There's a polarizer filter included in the M10 Set which has a little dial to adjust the pol filter. Also the pol filter might have a variance with included ND... So, I think you might got that part wrong/misremembered/didn't know it. :D

I disliked the review. Brandon, you obviously didn't get very deep into the functionality of the holder and didn't even understand the polarizer system. There's a little wheel on top of the drop-in polarizer to turn it separately from the square filter holder. So it's wrong, that you need to mess up the position of your grad filter in order to turn the polarizer. You shouldn't do a review if you have so little clue of a product. Please do better next time! 🙏

I believe their circular slide-in filters are all glass, as is the square filters. I don't think they have plastic filters for the M10 or M15 systems. I whs, though, that they had an adapter that would let you use multiple slide-in circular filters such as a CPL and a circular ND but this is still a better system than most of the others I've seen and the big thing that sold me was the accurate color (I had B+W filters for a while, and were good quality from a materials standpoing, but they would almost always have strange reddish/brownish color casts, which wasn't the end of the world, but meant more work in post processing to correct color). What ultimately caused me to switch to a square filter system is having 4 lenses all with different size filter threads and not wanting to have to buy multiple sets of filters for each lens.

  • @HR-wd6cw

FYI: the CPL has a wheel on the top that spins the polarizing filter for you so you don't have to turn the filter holder at all.

You should try out the new Haida NanoPro series filters, they are anti-reflection, nano coated optical grade scratch resistant glass and come in 100mm and 150mm square filters. I just got a 6 stop 150mm one today mainly to use on my Tokina 16-24mm f2.8 fitted with a Rollei pro square filter holder which is also worth a look, high end aircraft grade cast alloy for ultra wide lenses.

The Haida system is selling for 140 USD or a bit lower in 2022. You already know from previous comments that your perception of the CPL was way off. The Haida CPL works much easier than the Lee system. The filter is glass not plastic, just a very thin piece of glass. Bang for the buck leans towards Haida.
Would it not behoove you to take up with a company that will supports you? Any broken filter could result in a free replacement or the very least a huge discount.

Hello Brendan, I already have the LEE filter holder with wide angle adapter. In addition, I have the 0.9 Soft GND Fitler from LEE. I have so far only round ND filters, but would like to switch completely to the plug filter system. Would you recommend to buy the Haida M10 system? The starter kit is available in Germany for 499 € (holder, polarizer, ND8, ND64, ND1000, bag). Or would you advise me to buy only rectangular ND filters and use them for the LEE holder? What bothers me is that I can only use polarizing filter as a screw variant. Haida's system is better with the drop in filters, in my opinion. What would you advise? Complete the Haida M10 system or buy ND filters for the LEE holder? (Do Haida's Red Diamond filters fit into the LEE filter holder? Do LEE GND filters fit into the Haida M10 holder?)

Looks like a new version of Haida holder. I have an older one, it has an independently rotating polariser. The downside with the system I have, it has no vignetting at 16mm with my EF16-35mm, but at 82mm diameter and EF24-70 it produces vignetting in the range of about 24-30mm.
And yes, the filters themselves have no or very little colour cast even with 10-stop ND. So I'm happy with the Haida glass but not so happy with the holder.

    Hi Brendan.
I want to get more into street- and landscape photography. As of now, I mainly take pictures of birds, and I’m getting a bit tired of it. I can’t decide between getting a Canon EOS R, EF adapter, Canon 16-35mm f/4L IS USM and Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM A, getting a Sony A7RII, Canon 16-35mm f/4L IS USM, Sigma MC11 adapter and Zeiss 55mm f/1.8, or just keeping my Canon 6D, wait for a futuristic EOS R, and get more lenses (Canon 16-35mm f/4L IS USM, Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM A and afterwards the Canon 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM).
Reasons where I prefer the Canon combination.
    - Color science
    - Flip screen
    - Touch screen
    - More focus points
    - Handling
    - General ergonomics
    - I already use Canon
    - RF lenses, but I probably won’t get them before the end of the year, as they’re too expensive for me. Maybe the 35mm, but I’m not so sure how sharp that is.
Reasons where I prefer the Sony combination:
    - Higher resolution and more megapixels
    - Zeiss and Sony lenses that are cheaper than RF lenses and really sharp (Zeiss 55mm f/1.8, Zeiss 35mm f/2.8, Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro and more).
    - No Anti-aliasing (AA) filter
    - Body Image Stabilization (not too important for me)
    - Cheaper (can find one for $1300 on eBay, while I found the EOS R for at least $1780)
    - Better dynamic range
    - I can still use Canon lenses. Thinking of getting the Canon 16-35mm f/4L IS USM, Canon 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM and maybe more.
    Final solution:
Keep my Canon 6D, and get both the Canon 16-35mm f/4L IS USM and Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM A (wait for a new EOS R, or even a new Sony with an adapter.

So basically (I don't know where to really find a HAIDA EN Shop) the german HAIDA Shop sells the M10 System included with a Drop-In ND Filter.
      haida-deutschland.de/filterhalter/serie-m10/m10-filterhalter-kit/150/m10-filterhalter-kit-fuer-serie-100-filter?c=116
And on the Drop-In Filter is a little Dial which is there to turn the pol Filter ^^
I can't understand why he didn't talk about it in the video since the Drop-In Filter system awesome, I guess (probably buy this system soon).

I have been using Haida filters for 3 years (I am still with the first old version of 100Series) and yes I noticed Haida that already at that time had a better rendering in color than more expansive Lee. No blue casts, I am still happy with them. Probably upgrade in a while to the new intermediate system with control of the polarization with rotation since on mine I have to dismount the ND all the time I want to rotate the CPL (the M10 series I don't like so much)

A friend tried the Haida M10. So far he has knocked it off twice, not sure how as the big red lever does seem firm. However, his biggest issue is with square filter. He wanted to use a drop in polariser with one of his Lee ND filters. Unfortunately they do not fit. It turns out that any filter with a gasket will not fit in the holder unless you first remove the gasket. The slots are simply too tight. Shame but frustrating.
Lee have just released their new holder which is made of a new, tougher plastic. It also has a new clip in at the front polariser, less vignette and finally a new locking knob.
Having said that I still prefer the Nisi system which has just been updated as well. Even at 16mm there is no vignette ad the polariser is rear mounted. It takes all 100mm filters well too. And the quality is excellent. So for me, Nisi wins the prize but with Lee grads as I still have a collection.

They test all of their glass using Phase One 100 MP camera, so there is definitely no color cast or lost of sharpness what so ever. It’s a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Not sure what are you talking about the ultra wide filter for the Lee, do you mean the one for the front element extruding out of the filter? Because I use it with ultra wide lenses and I don't have much of a problem, apart from some vignetting on the every extreme focal length (10mm on the fuji, so 15mm on FF). And the vignetting is not caused by the filter holder but by the fact that the light has to travel diagonally through the filter glass...

    Hi Brendan, nice video again!
Can I ask a controversial question?
Our hobby / proffesion is digital photography, is it a real shame if you only use digital filters in post-processing?
Yes, I use a real polarization filter, but the gradient filters I do in the post-processing. (I stack to achieve long shutterspeeds during the day)
As a hobby photographer, I don't currently have the priority to purchase an expensive set and am just not satisfied when I use a cheap set.
I have a sony and I am considering buying the app that you have reviewed in Argentina. Did not find those results bad, despite I agree with you that a real filter is many times faster.
What is your opinion about this? Do you prefer no filters to lower quality filters?

    • @Distinctly.Average
      @Distinctly.Average 5 років тому +1

I will add my,comments on this. Hope you don’t mind. Grads are simple in post but I find it helps my composition to use them in the field. For me it is also quicker. I work in IT so the last thing I want to do after a fun shoot is spend too much time in front of another computer. Heavy NDs such as a 6 or 10 stop can also be done in post by combining multiple shots. This takes more effort in post, see above. It also introduces other problems which I am sure you can appreciate. As you say, polarisers are almost impossible to replicate in post.
So from my point of view, polarisers aside it is down to personal preference. I prefer to do as much as possible in camera as this leads to less editing time. It probably also leaves more latitude in post if needed.

I use the NiSi filter system. The circular polarizer screws into the adapter ring, which has its own rotation controls. You can thus rotate the polarizer independently from the NDs. The filter holder easily spins on the adapter ring to facilitate landscape or portrait shooting, but it also stays on the adapter ring pretty securely. The holder can take up to three filters.
I actually use Lee filters (other than the polarizer) and I've gotten used to correcting the color cast, so not looking to spend more money replacing them.

Personally I use a Wine Country Camera system, they have a polarizer at the first section that can be removed, but there is a knob that allows it to be rotated regardless of the ND or GND filters. It uses holder for the filters thus most any standard 100X100 and 100 x1 500 can fit. Allows for being able to use the glass of your choosing for most part, thought the Blackstone natives are very good. One issues is the cost which tend to be one of the highest systems. Their support is excellent by the way and overall the systems is great and this comes after being a Lee for a few years and have tried other from Benro, Conklin and even the Haida.

I've been using the Lee System for over four years now and love the IRND ND filters. They are great. The one thing that I don't like about Lee is the reverse ND .6 and .9 due to it's color cast. I use them a lot and am seriously considering the Haida R-ND Grads because the magenta in the Lee filters is so bad. Any thoughts?

I'm a happy user of the NiSi system - the color cast is almost zero (except for the 6-stop ND that has a slight one); haven't seen a sharpness loss; the polarizer rotates nicely behind the filters (there are two wheels to rotate it even with the grads/NDs mounted on). The only warning I follow is not to abuse the filters physically (that means I take care of them well and don't toss them around), as I read rumors they are not built as tough as Lee and Hitech-Formatt. On the other hand, all filters are going to scratch and degrade when abused. The filter holder system is tough as a tank - aviation grade aluminum, no plastic stuff.

Hey Brendan! I honestly hope you see this comment.
First off I want to say thank you so much for the content, it’s amazing and helps a lot. Plus it’s very inspiring.
Secondly, I wanted to ask if you have ever had a chance to use the Benro filters? They are made from Schott Optical Glass. Personally they are my favorite filters. Just curious what your take is on them?
    Might be a cool video.
Thank you for all you do for the photo community.

I got tired of the Lee system quirks and switched over to the Wine Country Cameras filter system & haven't looked back. I still use the Lee filters I owned but not the filter foundation. The nice thing about the Wine Country foundation is the polarizer drops in to the base and you can rotate it using a thumb gear. It's more expensive than either the Haida or Lee foundations, but it's worth it for me.

Polarizer turns in the holder. It has a knob to roatet, you don't need to roatate the holder. There are also ND stoppers 100x100 which go in the front so you can combine them with the polarizer.....Didn't Haida sent the manual with the kit?

What about the canon R filters system that are between the lense and camera body?

Not being able to move the polariser independent of the other filters is a big no go. The Nisi system is gold, if you haven't seen it. The Nisi polariser also amazing. I actually own some Haida filters as they seemed slightly better value than the Nisi equivalent.

Since you are keeping the Haida system, maybe do another update review after say 6 months to a year to compare wear and tear.
Cause the thing that crosses my mind is the plastic filters, of course color cast maybe correct out of the box but what will happen after time been exposed to uv light or different conditions etc.

  • @tonyturner7676
    @tonyturner7676 5 років тому

Not for me. The polariser situation makes the Lee system the only option for me. The colour cast is easily corrected in post, I’ve always found the Lee holder to be first rate so why pay more for what appears to be no added benefits.

Great that there are a number of filter systems now available giving choice, I guess that most people will stick with what they have already invested in but if you can mix and match then that gives options.

Hi. The material is Aviation grade Aluminium. When you heve the complete kit, you can add an extra clip to hold 3 additional filters.

I see that you are shooting more on the EOS R these days; is the 5DIV relegated to back up body or are there situations where it is still number one?

I have bought my Haida filters from Photosphere, in Singapore. Great filters - never any problem. I have the older system and so am obviously not going to change to the new M10 system. Not at those prices.

I have the older version of the Haida filter system, their polarizer could rotate independently in that and worked great, so it's weird that they didn't continue to use that in their newest model.

    • @arip9188
      @arip9188 5 років тому

They do! There's a little wheel on top of the drop-in polarizer to tune in the effect. The presentation in the review is wrong.

I have very good experiences with Benro filters. Their holder probably solves the issues you found on the Haida and the price of their system is about the same. And let’s not forget that the thickness of most brands is such that you can use then in almost any holder of any brand.
