  • This engine failure is an extreme and rare case caused by negligence regarding oil changes and service intervals. (More about possible cause under main description)
A simple and precise diagnosis of engine noise can be applied to any brand of engine. In this instance, we are dealing with Skyactive 2.2 diesel engine knocking noise.
Link: Timing chain and oil pump chain (BALANCER UNIT) removal installation. Important info: you do not need to remove the sidewall (side cover) for the removal of the balancer unit. ( mark sprocket and oil pump chain, so you can align with the chain, later on, remove sprocket's bolt and remove the balancer unit) • Mazda Skyactiv D engin...
Another Link: Balancer Unit removal and Strainer replacement: • P06DE P055F Low Oil Pr...
In this case, I suspect there was an injector gas leak causing carbon build-up and gather on the oil pump filter( its proper name is Strainer), So the Strainer gets clogged and inhibits lubrication.
To prevent lubrication failures, Mazda introduced software to monitor oil pressure constantly, and if the oil pressure drops below a particular threshold, a warning light gets triggered. At this stage, it is not harmful to the engine. What is dangerous is the negligence of the driver. (often, the vehicle comes for inspection after hundreds of kilometers since the initial malfunction). For the Mazda workshop, it is easy to check at what mileage DTC had been set, available only for dealers.
Prevention: in the case of a warning light, go to the dealer right away, do not delete error codes; it will give the technician a clearer picture.
Prevention with no issue: ask for replacing injector gaskets every 100 thousand km. Cost is incomparably low to the price of any related repair.
Another essential factor is proper engine oil. Other oils not approved by
the manufacturer will not withstand oil dilution, so use genuine oil:
Engine oil for (Europe) Mazda Original Oil Supra DPF 0W-30, Mazda Original Oil Ultra DPF 5W-30, Alternative ACEA C3 0W-30, 5W-30.
Engine oil (Except Europe): Viscosity (SAE) 0W-30, 5W-30 Grade ACEA C3
Australia and New Zealand: Viscosity (SAE) 5W-30 Grade ACEA C1 or JASO DL-1
Regarding wrong oil and not performing an oil change is common practice (oil gets diluted with diesel and the lubrication gets significantly worse, especially at the end of its life). Oil life is dependent on your driving habits and driving distances. If you drive short distances daily, the automatic DPF regeneration is performed more often, so oil increases dilution. That is why Mazda has introduced flexible service and oil change. PCM (Powertrain Control Module) software can monitor driving distances, frequency of DPF regeneration, and other factors contributing to faster deterioration of engine oil and depending on gathered data to inform you when oil change is needed.

Oh my god! I like to buy a second hand Mazda CX5 2.2 skyactive Diesel 175. Since 27 years I drove different Mazda vehicles and I was always very satisfied. The CX 5 would be my first Diesel because I'm looking for more torque to tow my caravan. From up how many km's I must expect a defect like this. Normally I mantain my cars always very good, especially the oil change. I don't go to Mazda garage, because they rip off the customers. I bring my cars to a very good free garage where they can repair all different brands. The owner learned those days in a local Mazda garage.
Your video is very interesting. Thank you for showing it. Greetings from Germany.

Hi. Thanks for the comment. Regarding this particular failure of the engine, it was at approximately 100K km. As I mentioned in the description and here is a quotation "This engine failure is an extreme and rare case caused by negligence regarding oil changes and service intervals.''
Concerning ripping off customers, I'm afraid I have to disagree. As a Mazda authorized dealer, we often have inquiries about matching the price quoted by an independent workshop; we are consistently chosen in such circumstances.
Customers find only the Advantages of servicing their car at Mazda Authorised Workshop; for example, in case of pricy repairs like in my video and even outside the warranty period. As a loyal customer, you would receive the new engine. If you need more examples, write. Greetings

Thanks. Those R2 engines were very reliable if well maintained, one thing you need to change as prevention is injector washers. The timing chain gets stretched but that is when DTC comes on. Frequent oil change extends the timing chain life and not only.

Thank you for your videos. I find them to be very informative, well explained and helpful. One could never stop learning from these videos. I have a 2015 Mazda 3 2.2 D which I bought certified from a Mazda dealer with 31000kms. Unfortunately it did not come with a service history and the engine has no issues at the present 38000kms. Being mechanically minded I change the oil every 3000 to 4000 kms/yearly using Mazda original Ultra DPF oil and filter. Also, I always monitor the DPF regen before turning off the engine i.e. if I notice that regen is in process I do not turn off the engine but instead take it for a spin using low gears until regen has ended. I never experienced any oil rising/dilution so far. My question is this: having read about issues with these engines do you think I should check the strainer for clogging or the exhaust camshaft for wear after a certain mileage as a preventative maintenance? Or should I stay with just the regular oil changes unless there's anything wrong? In my ownership all I did was re tighten the injector nuts, clean and inspect the intake shutter valve and a pcm update at the dealer as a recall concerning the egr.

    • @JB_Auto
      @JB_Auto  3 роки тому +2

Hi, Thank you for your comment. It is excellent practice replacing oil as you do. Extended driving with diluted oil is very harmful to those engines hence further complaints. (For instance, as a result of severely diluted oil is broken oil pump chain.)
Your driving distances are very short since you need to go for an additional spin to finish DPF regeneration.
If you were driving long distances, you wouldn't notice DPF regeneration because it is automatic...
You did not experience oil dilution because, at 4K mileage, it is not noticeable.
Issues with exhaust camshafts were present on early Mazdas CX5 and 6
then after a specific VIN, it has been modified, including rocker arms, turbos, and much more; So we have never replaced the exhaust camshaft on Mazda 3.
A possible issue on the 2015 Mazda 3 would be: Combustion gas leak from the injector gasket/washer, creating carbon deposits and clog the strainer.
The leak of mentioned gas occurs at various mileages, and most cases are at approx. 150K.
PCM constantly monitors changes in oil pressure; if oil pressure drops below a certain threshold, it turns on the oil pressure warning light and a message ''Vehicle inspection Necessary.''
Clogging occurs gradually, and it is not harmful to the engine if fixed at once.
For myself, I would replace injector gaskets/washers (those washers are now modified and last much longer, new part no: SH01-13-H51 silver color)
On the other hand, if you perform regular services at Mazda's authorized dealer, you probably are eligible for free of charge 24/7 Emergency roadside assistance (available in most countries).
Summing up, I would stay with regular oil changes and drive longer distances.

@@JB_Auto Thank you for your clarifications/advice. Indeed, my driving distances are usually around 40kms in rural/urban areas but hardly in traffic conditions and keeping it in 4th gear thus slightly higher revs of approx 2000rpm and with a planned yearly good trip on the motorway. I also read about blown head gasket issues with these engines but I presume these were on early skyactiv diesels on CX5s and 6s. I miss having a water temp gauge so I could monitor what's going on under the bonnet. Other than that I give thumbs up to Mazda engineers for creating such a fine piece of engineering on the entire vehicle.

Hi, generally speaking, all Diesel engines on Mazda CX5 KF are heavily modified. Modifications began with early models(2013). Since the introduction of the SCR or commonly known AdBlue system, they got rid of soot problems so at this point those cars are much more reliable. Til now we haven't had any issues, that is sad because we have less work😉 but more happy customers though. If your question appears after watching my video or any other, it is related to old models. The noise because of broken pistons as You've seen in the video is extremely rare, one case in 12 years working with Mazda. You can use injector values for diagnosis, those I showed in the video, if the correction is high then it can make a similar noise to the one on the video.

Hi, I've seen the video. You claim that the noise is getting louder while the engine is hot that may indicate low oil pressure so check that first. While you disconnected connectors of each injector the noise seems to disappear at the first one, not quite sure. I suggest checking oil pressure, DTC's, checking injector values to exclude injector fault, as in my video.
You should utilize a good tester to disconnect injectors because after disconnecting the injector physically you need to re-start the engine to get it running properly( you will have smoother transition using a tester, and therefore clearer picture) You can also raise RPM when disconnecting the injector to emphasize the noise, I noticed it gets louder while higher RPM.

Timing chain replacement only when DTC appears. Oil pump chain: old models where oil dilution is severe at most of oil replacements ( severe oil dilution causes greater friction damaging oil pump chain guide, and therefore chain snaps. Genuine silver gaskets are modified and we do not have any problem with them if properly tightened.
It is not possible to replace oil strainer without removal of oil pump, U can use carburetor cleaner to remove carbon from strainer, do not forget to flush engine after that. Exactly, and in this case, I suspect there was an injector gas leak causing carbon to gather on the oil pump filter( its proper name is Strainer), So the Strainer gets clogged and inhibits lubrication. Therefore the previous workshop had replaced connecting rod bearings.
Regarding wrong oil and not performing an oil change is common practice (oil gets diluted with diesel and the lubrication gets significantly worse, especially at the end of its life)

@@davidlehrreich3946 Hi. the injector holders had to be overtightened; we remove them often on a single vehicle and never had an issue with them.
If it comes to DPF on the Skyactiv engine, no issues as well. Getting rid of it only makes sense if you disable DPF in Power Train Control Module software. Oil pump chain gets broken due to oil intervals replacement not correct and heavily diluted engine oil, and that is because of frequent automatic regeneration of DPF (read: customer drives short distances and that is why frequent regeneration)
I agree with removing both DPF and software, and then we dispose of the oil dilution problem.

actually this engine is purely designed and developed by Mazda. Ford had nothing to do with this engine.
