Most modern 4cyl engines with direct injection sound like higher revving diesels. It's the injectors making the diesel style clatter. My mom has a 2012 Chevy Equinox, sounds the same way. First time I heard it I thought it was a diesel.
Went to buy from Hertz today a 2018 CX5 grand touring, beautiful car but upon start up it had a very prominent loud ticking noise. Pulled another similar CX5 alongside it and it didn't have anywhere near the volume of tick. I called the deal off, they took it to a Mazda shop for examination...I'll wait to see what that reveals.
Really good video. Excellent description, sound quality, and camera work. This puts my mind at ease. After reading several forums I got a lot of different answers. This finally clears it up. I do have a couple of questions. 1) Should the fuel pump still make that sound at idle speed after the engine is warm 2) Does it quiet down at higher rpms or does it just speed up, making it harder to hear? Thanks again.
The high pressure pump gets quieter than what the video portrays when your engine is hot. (10min after the coolant temp reaches it running temp at 95c) When it is still cool it is a tad bit louder in my experience
Mazda's Skyactiv petrol engines are the first I've seen, that if something was going wrong I wouldn't be able to hear it - no matter cold or warm. They don't sound nice (idling under the hood at least) but as far as I know they are very reliable.
Thanks for this video, I couldn't quite tell if that engine clicking was loose valve lifters, the pump and injectors, just a normal skyactiv thing, or what lol
Great video, very interesting and helpful. My European Mazda 3 2L 150 sounds a little different and seems to rev a higher at start (maybe because it's brand new). It calms down after a minute or so but I noticed that heating works much sooner than say on my Kia (which doesn't rev much higher on start)
High compression engines will give you that ticking sound on startup. My 3 does it before settling down to a nice little burble. My VVT-i Corolla did the same thing.
yes, my new 2024 2.0NA makes the same rattling sound every first start in the morning (25C)...got me worried when I first heard it...quiets down after about 30s.
That's Oke, don't worry! Can be the belt tensioner and water pump cause attach outside from the engine, those can make noise.Just normal running sound. No engine light, that is the most important thing
My 2023 CX5 sounds and drives different from other Japanese cars. At low speed, it seems to want to stay in the same gear even when you give a little more gas. But when you go a little faster, you feel gear change.
Thanks a lot for this video, I have a 2020 Toyota Yaris (Mazda 2) and I always wondered if this was normal but couldn't find any videos on this 🙌 thanks!!
Actually, just as an addendum these types of quite loud cold start noises are fairly common these days. Even an old 2007 2.0 litre Hyundai i30 with the G4GC engine is amazingly diesel-like in sound on its first cold start of the day. Lots of loud clacking in the Hyundai mainly attributable to solid bucket tappets makes it sound exactly like a diesel for the first 15 or 20 seconds. So the Mazda SkyActiv is actually quite a sweet and smooth sounding modern engine. No worse and actually quite a bit better than most but still fairly typical in the type of noise its making. Good reliable motors that someone elsewhere mentioned they had put nearly 400,000 miles on (nearly 600,000 km) in their 2015 Mazda 6, so that's good news
Interestingly it's even more noticeable in the Skyactiv-D but the noise from the diesel engines is explained by something the engine is doing by design. Before the global financial crisis occurred in 2008, Ford miraculously saw the writing on the wall and scrambled to divest its holdings in Mazda and Volvo and getting a line of credit in order to save itself. This worked for Ford, allowing it to avoid US federal emergency loans given to GM and Chrysler. But it left both Mazda and Volvo in predicaments. Volvo as we know became a Chinese owned company. But Mazda, decided to reinvent itself focusing purely around clean sheeting everything, and re-thinking the engineering for every part in a very Japanese way. Focusing on engines, Mazda went down two extreme paths with their Skyactiv-G engine and Skyactiv-D. It made the G have the highest compression ratio of any mainstream engine. With the diesel it went the opposite way, making it by far, the lowest compression diesel on the market. Low compression? Why? Many university studies showed that low compression diesels would allow a large reduction in emissions, which in the case of Mazda proved to be true (which also allowed it to be the only diesel to pass emission tests post diesel gate - Source: Forbes (2016) - "Japan Releases (Nasty) Diesel Test Results, Germany Sits On Them"). Low compression also has a few other benefits. It reduces changes the noise of the engine making it sounds 1/2 gasoline and 1/2 diesel, makes the engine far more free revving. BUT it has a major drawback!!! Low compression diesel HATES COLD STARTS. So Mazda cheats a little. With the Skyactiv-D it diverts the exhaust back into the cylinder head to warm it up. The process is significantly noisier than other diesels on startup. But when it's warm, it becomes much quieter than other diesels due to it's low compression ratio of 14:1 (the CX-60 has increased this to 15:1). Mazda states: "the exhaust valves are opened slightly during the intake stroke to regurgitate the hot exhaust gas back into the cylinder, which increases the air temperature." Refer to www.mazda.com/en/archives/skyactiv/skyactiv-d/
My 2016 cx5 sport, starts revving high at first , then after a few seconds it drops down way quieter,,I couldn't really hear a drastic drop down on yours, but for most part it sounds the same!
I noticed this on my 2016 but after about a minute it all calms down. I have a lot confidence in it's reliability.

@@taichihead42 no a Mazda 3 2013 I got a Chrysler town and country 2014 now as well and every time I turn around that pos needs work done lol I’m thinking about trading in my van for a cx9 a newer model since I’ve gotten my credit up to 720.
Most modern 4cyl engines with direct injection sound like higher revving diesels. It's the injectors making the diesel style clatter. My mom has a 2012 Chevy Equinox, sounds the same way. First time I heard it I thought it was a diesel.
Thank you man!! this video saved me from wasting money on a mechanic.
Awesome, thanks! Sounds exactly like that.
Was so puzzled by that sound at first!
6GL 2.5 petrol wagon 2019
Thanks for making this video. The noise started to get louder recently (or maybe I noticed it more). Hope it's just as you explained.
I'm subscribing simply because I heard that clicking and got scared, found your video and wooooo I feel so much better!
Thank you so much for the explanation. I was a bit scared that my new car sounded like that the first time I started it up after the first night home.
Perfect video thanks! I’m about to buy a 2019 Mazda cx-3 and I heard the fuel pump ticking and got concerned. I’m doing it lol.
My 2017 Miata doing exactly that’s & I wonder why but now I know it is normal after watching your videos so thank You much
So glad that I live in southern AZ, away from all the rust & crazy winters.
Well done. I thought something was wrong with mine. Thank you
Went to buy from Hertz today a 2018 CX5 grand touring, beautiful car but upon start up it had a very prominent loud ticking noise. Pulled another similar CX5 alongside it and it didn't have anywhere near the volume of tick. I called the deal off, they took it to a Mazda shop for examination...I'll wait to see what that reveals.
Got a 2016 mazda 6 manual transmission and love it
Really good video.
(10min after the coolant temp reaches it running temp at 95c)
When it is still cool it is a tad bit louder in my experience
Mazda's Skyactiv petrol engines are the first I've seen, that if something was going wrong I wouldn't be able to hear it - no matter cold or warm. They don't sound nice (idling under the hood at least) but as far as I know they are very reliable.
Thanks! Just to confirm, my 2019 nd2 MX5 just turned 86k miles and sounds the same from brand new.
wow you drive alot! i'm only 46k KM on my 2020. Do you winter drive ?
Got Mazda6 one week ago, worried about engine sound. Thx!
Thanks for this video, I couldn't quite tell if that engine clicking was loose valve lifters, the pump and injectors, just a normal skyactiv thing, or what lol
Glad that helped. For noisy lifter, this video shows you how that sounds like ua-cam.com/video/F-8QpJ8SPuI/v-deo.html
I didn’t know this was a question. It is in the manual 😂 Mazda rocks!!
Put it this way, that's music on a cold frozen morning. If it makes no sound then you should be worried 😆
Unless you’re all electric :p
Thank you for the explanation mine sounds exactly as you've demonstrated thanks from South Africa
Sounds like music to me ☺️
I rather enjoy the fuel injectors and high pressure fuel pump clicking.
Great video, very interesting and helpful. My European Mazda 3 2L 150 sounds a little different and seems to rev a higher at start (maybe because it's brand new).
It calms down after a minute or so but I noticed that heating works much sooner than say on my Kia (which doesn't rev much higher on start)
choke
Thank you so much for this awesome video. It really helped put my mind at ease for the mazda I just test drove.
Thanks a bunch for this video. Exactly what I was looking for as a reference point to know what to expect.
That’s awesome. Glad I was able to help!
I have 2 mazda 6. They're awesome cars. Not one had a check engine light on!
What year?
@@CDalonzo A soul Red 2016 with a manual 6 speed with 100k miles and a blue 2018 Grand Touring Reserve with 14k miles. Both excellent cars 👌👍🏼💪
My 2011 Mazda Premacy (5) non-Skyactiv model has the same engine sound so I guess it's typical for Mazda engines. Engine runs like a champ until now.
The sound is from the high pressure fuel pump and brake booster/ vacuum pump that run off the exhaust cam .
Thanks a ton, helped me when looking at a used 2016 cx5
The clicking sound of my MX5 ND 2L Skyactive motor when it is warm made me crazy! But it seems to sound nearly the same in your video
Yea its the high pressure fuel pump and direct injectors which are quite alot louder
Thanks for the video, I just got a 2018 CX9 and sounds just like this, at first was concerned but, I am glad you cleared my mind. Thanks
Glad I could help
That's Oke, don't worry! Can be the belt tensioner and water pump cause attach outside from the engine, those can make noise.Just normal running sound. No engine light, that is the most important thing
Thank you fir this video! I’ve been wondering too why it’s too loud at cold startup. Now I know 😁
My 2023 CX5 sounds and drives different from other Japanese cars. At low speed, it seems to want to stay in the same gear even when you give a little more gas. But when you go a little faster, you feel gear change.
Yeah on hills especially it doesn't know what gear to choose and usually lugs the engine at 2k rpms unless you give more gas to downshift.
Thanks a lot for this video, I have a 2020 Toyota Yaris (Mazda 2) and I always wondered if this was normal but couldn't find any videos on this 🙌 thanks!!
Interesting! I didn't know the Yaris uses the SkyActiv engine till you mention it. I looked it up and you have the 1.5L SkyActiv engine correct?
Nice one! I was wondering about this on my newly bought Mazda 3.
Mazda states: "the exhaust valves are opened slightly during the intake stroke to regurgitate the hot exhaust gas back into the cylinder, which increases the air temperature."

Gracias por el video! Habia estado buscándolo hace un tiempo ya!
Many thanks. Best explaination on this issue.
My 2016 cx5 sport, starts revving high at first , then after a few seconds it drops down way quieter,,I couldn't really hear a drastic drop down on yours, but for most part it sounds the same!
Nothing is up, Mark, but thanks for caring.
The clicking sound is normal for every chain driven engine. It's the sounds of the chain going over the teeth and guide
It is not the chain. if it is chain that clicking sound will be way faster.
Thank you for sharing this!
Dobrze że trafiłem na ten filmik bo już myślałem że coś jest nie tak z moją 6 tym bardziej że moja poprzednia mazda6 pracowała zupełnie inaczej😅
also be sure that the engine cover is on correctly, if not the vibrations will make it shudder and make you think you have a head gasket issue
Literally the most reliable 2.0 in the market rn
That lovely B2300 truck engine. Mine sounds the same.
Where abouts are you from? Only some regions have the B2300. Unfortunately Canada does not have that model :(
