  • Stand-up comedian George Carlin is irreverent and on-point as he looks for consistency in the conservative argument against abortion.
"Back in Town" aired as a live broadcast from New York City’s Beacon Theater and features Carlin’s trademark acerbic observations on topics such as abortion, capital punishment, familiar expressions and bodily functions. Classic routines “Sanctity of Life,” “State Prison Farms,” “Free-Floating Hostility” and more are included in this hysterical stand-up comedy performance.
Stream the full special here: tubitv.com/mov...
George Carlin described his comedy as focusing on 3 things: love of language and how we use it; the small things, moments we all share as humans; and the big topics of our culture-war, death, children, religion, etc. A social commentator, he challenged conventional wisdom and brought us face-to-face with our ingrained hypocrisies. There was no topic off limits to his keen observation, wordplay, goofy jabs and rants, whether it was drugs, war, politics, the accumulation of stuff or the way in which we use words.

For younger people who didn't live through seeing this when it aired, this was right smack in the middle of the religious right's grip on America and Troops being praised for their service in the Iraq war. It was legit shocking to hear someone talk about these issues like this at the time, which is exactly why Carlin was so valuable and ahead of the game. Nobody else was talking like this about social issues.

It wasn't the Iraq war. It was Desert Storm, which ended in 1991. Only conservatives were sucking the boot, as usual, and carlin wasn't the only voice.

George Carlin knew what he was talking about and sadly, most of the problems are still the same. We literally live in a day and age where people shout "your body, my choice" when it comes to this topic.

@@h.a.9880 this is kind of how humans have been for the last however many thousand years we’ve been alive. While our heightened intelligence compared to other species allows us to transcend the survival mindset that most creatures have and allow us to have complex and nuanced thoughts, this also allows for bad actors to take advantage of that and use it to control or harm others. Our social nature also leads us to highly value personal relationships which means that a lot of people will go along with bad things just to stay a part of what they consider the in-group and to avoid being viewed as an outsider or “other”.

Carlin isn’t some moral philosopher. The man is just a reflection of the same misplaced broken down reasoning that not only obscures the issue with abortion, but also countless other moral issues. If you are seeing him as some bastion of wisdom, then it should be said that you are the one that has lost the plot.

I grew up with George as my favorite comic. As I get older I realize how overrated he is. Norm MacDonald, the actual GOAT, was dead right: Carlin didn't really make people smile.
