You are absolutely right about subtlety. However, for once I have to differ from maestro Lutz about his interpretation. At this speed the impact of the syncopations in this chorus is lost, and the choir comes over as less than majestic. The tympani, essential to the rhythm, are too frequently inaudible. Those who get the speed right are Leonhardt (not available on the internet), Fritz Werner (con the inestimable advantage of having Maurice André on first trumpet) and, above all Leusink, whose forces are technically inferior to those of Lutz, tho' his tympanist is a star. The trumpeter here gets that top E, which many trumpeters fluff, but it would be more effective at a slower speed. Maestro Lutz must have his reasons for choosing this speed, and it would be interesting to know what he thinks.
@@mach1chap I listened to other interpretations of this work after reading your comment and I agree that I love the tempo at which Leonhardt set the last chorus (this was the first result on Spotify when I searched for this cantata). Für die Himmelfahrt, die 1738 in Leipzig gefeiert wurde. Der Meister ist wie immer ein ausgezeichneter Dolmetscher, herzlichen Glückwunsch! Fantastischer Kantate!
That counter-tenor, Jan Börner, is amazing, with a tone so pure, velvet-like, yet strong. (Singing the alto aria, "Ach, bleibe doch, mein liebstes Leben," he's mistakenly listed as an "Alto" in the persona list, above.)
Countertenors are altos. Almost all countertenors are altos, but not all altos are countertenors. If people want to specify female altos, they're called either contraltos or mezzo-sopranos, depending on where the individual's voice range lies. (And sometimes contraltos call themselves mezzos because it's very hard to get opera work if you call yourself a contralto.)
@@mwnyc3976 I was just going to explain the same thing you did so eloquently. You did so in a far better way than I could have done! But I also confess that it is difficult to get these differentiations correctly. I got myself informed when I met a very young Andreas Scholl at the beginning of his career and he was introduced as Alto or/+ Countertenor….
The Aria at 6:50 always "knocks me out." It literally puts me in a trance-like state. I can actually mouth the German words along with the soloist - (I only speak English).

it's a bit unfair I think, only the first choir is a bit too fast (and actually I don't think it's the tempo, it's the intention: I've noticed that Lutz has sometimes the tendency to play the opening choir a bit too frantic, so that it comes across as rushed, despite not being that much faster than other recent recordings), the rest seems to be at the right pace to me
Respeto todas las opiniones, pero cómo atreverse con Rudolf de ese modo , me parece una osadía. En mi vida he escuchado una interpretación así, del conjunto de Cantatas de Bach. This performance was of the high quality I always expect from the J S Bach Foundation (although it was not as miraculous as some others, eg, BWV 66). So I am surprised with some of the Comments and Replies here. The counter tenor was excellent. Generally I prefer male vocal soloists, and I think Bach would be happy with that. They are more likely to sing on the pitch rather than wobble around the pitch with vibrato, as females tend to do. Also, their voices have more power so they are less likely to ‘screech’ to make themselves heard. I am undecided about how soprano Wernli sang the Aria. Perhaps it was operatic rather than Bach. I would love to hear it sung by a treble (boy soprano), as Bach trained and used. ua-cam.com/video/1HOZoNAwaVU/v-deo.html I think the pace throughout was appropriate. Lutz and his performers know that ALL Bach's music dances, sometimes wildly. So they all dance in their playing. For a Bach performance, there are a lot of dancers on the dance floor. Bach would not object and demand that performances must follow exactly how he did it with his limited resources (but no one should complain about a performance which does that). The enthusiast audience contributes so much to the mood, but I see their average age and I am concerned: Where is the audience of tomorrow? (The performers are more of mixed ages.)
Thank you very much for your comment. Tomorrow's audience? We want to gain it through the music and invest countless hours that we happily invest in introducing every generation to Bach's music and, last but not least, inspiring them.
One can never destroy BAch's music with his soli Deo gloria, but the speed is somewhat frenetic for my taste, not that I like Mal Sargeant's dreary speeds either. Did he actually record any Bach? Not good for native englisch speakers trying to follow whatever German their knowledge will allow.
Having sung for years with my amateur Bach Society in Brisbane Australia, I don't think we would've gotten within 15% short of that speed. By 2000 we were mostly singing in German, but earlier in the 80's we tended to use those appalling Novello translations which showed minimal appreciation for the tensions of Lutheran theology that Bach understood so well.
The gap between a genius and the rest of us is immense!
