Tiny HO Train Layout Build - 4x6 Model Railroad Part 3 Finally Complete!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лют 2025
- Over the corse of a month we've been constructing this compact HO scale 4x6 layout. In part three the goal was to complete the layout with paint and scenery.
This meant coating the cardboard structures for all the mountains and buildings with different mixes of paint as well as finishing the road which weaves its way through the centre of the layout.
We managed to get the layout to completion on time and delivered it to its new owner the next day. Stay tuned for the reaction of its future owner running trains for the first time.

Note that I heavily modified the dimensions of the kit in order to fit my project
I love this down to earth approach. After watching enough of the master builders, making layouts indistinguishable from reality, it’s easy for newcomers to give up before they even get started. It’s a model, it’s a hobby, and having fun is the only important part. Now I got the urge to make one myself.
That's what its all about. Nothing too complicated!
Im all smiles and Im no kid. What a great job on this layout. Kudos to you...!!
Best small HO layout I've seen. Just the right balance between track and scenery.
Thank you!
What an amazing gift for a young man to receive. Likely to remember his whole life.
That is one awesome little layout. Hard to believe it's only a 4'x6'. So much going than just trains going in circles. As we say in Texas, "You done good". That little kiddo is going to be happy. From Texas.
Excellent work on the layout. It was nice that the young lady volunteered to help get the scenery done faster. It came out awesome. No one should critique it because you created it to spread the joy of the hobby with a youngster. Good for you. I also found it amusing you had the same train running music that was in the original World’s Greatest Hobby “build a layout” video. Once again. Well done. Thank you for all that you do for the Model Railroad Community.
This is far better than anything you could purchase from a store, enjoyment for years to come
Also just watched part 1 and 2 - that will be one happy kid! Beautiful compact layout!
I am 60 and I could spend hours and days just running trains on this one
AGAIN: THANK YOU for the videos!
As I said before, a few us here in these USA under siege by oligarch criminals are rooting for Canada and all others!
Vive le Canada!
Thanks for supporting the channel. Also no hard feelings for our neighbours to the south 🇺🇸🇨🇦
Nice little layout!
Greetings from Germany!
very cool project! many thanks for sharing this series of clips.
I used to have this one tree that would fall on my layout. I kept on thinking of Beetle Juice! I guess every modeler felt that at one point or another. lol Amazing work, Harrison!
I love that movie, I was always amazed by how many layers they dug through when I was a kid.
Very nice! I’m impressed that it works reliably with such tight curves and steep grades!
It’s a lot more forgiving than I thought it would be.
This is my motivation to build a layout for grandson. This layout.
Love your layout. Looks great. I built an HO scale train on a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the 80's. I made a switchboard using toggle switches from Radio Shack so I wouldn't have to go around the table. No internet then just magazines to get a design. I sold it along time ago.
My father had one like that. It was dismantled long ago but the track, trains and buildings survived and were added onto my current layout.
A very nice layout indeed!
I really enjoyed watching these getting ready to build one in the near future
Awesome layout! I bet someone was grinning ear to ear! What a great gift! I was hoping you’d give us a lowlight bit so we could admire the lights in buildings. 😁
There will be in the reaction video
Are u in Ontario? Or Quebec @@SMTMainline

Good job on the layout. I like the 3D printed trusses and pretty creative idea to clump up the grass to give some texture to the scenery.
Thanks, the printer did a great job for thus project.
4x6 is about the most I can work with in my apartment and this looks amazing. Would love to see a track plan and maybe adapt scenery to be a mix of stuff from places I've lived in Texas and Arizona over the years.
Great job, Harrison! I bet it was well received.
Fantastic - I keep coming back to view as I have battery operated trains and this has given me new ideas, I hope to emulate your skill - well done.....
Nice job. You make it all so simple.
Looks great, Harrison!👍😎
This layout looks incredible, I'm sure the kid you're making it for is very happy with it. Great work as usual!
Thanks a bunch!
Wow very impressive. A big difference from when my dad and I built a layout in the mid 70’s.
4x8 sheet of plywood 1x4 and 2x4 frame. A roll of simulated real grass paper.
I still have it in my basement, the board , all buildings scenery and trains.
All the boxes fell apart but now it’s all in plastic bins.
Most likely when I retire I will get it all going again.
I really enjoy your channel.
Also the Olds 98 Regency.
I have a 1969 Olds 98 Holiday Coupe.👍
Absolutely amazing! Love it. The fact that you’re posting a reaction video means the recipient loves it too. This is definitely your calling. The S in SMT now stands for Santa.
I love it 😂thanks
Another amazing build Harrison! Keep up the great work!
For a beginner, that final glue process has me BAFFLED!! Could you go over how that process is then cleaned off the tracks themselves? Glue can be damn stubborn, as you know. So seeing how thats done would be great! Thanks again Harrison.
The water with dish soap acts to break down surface tension so the white glue (polyvinyl acetate water-based glue - Elmer's Glue-All being typical) soaks into the ballast - which is just fine crushed rock - and dries clear, holding the ballast in place. The white glue barely sticks to the metal rails, it cleans off quick and easy with a track cleaning pad or a white rubber eraser.
Nice layout it’s looks a lot better with all scenery and color hope the guy likes it and I actually start a base to a train maybe layout I might build and try not to fail again.
Awesome channel great video keep them up please like and subscribe thanks for your support
Awesome job! I bet that was one happy kid.
very talented gentleman well done , I'm sur he'll love it
Turned out great Harrison good job 👍
Great job! Chris and Dom
Hi, Harrison! Really nice video and result! I really like how it went good from nothing to this. Even though you realized it for a beginner, it seems so professional, definitely a 10/10 in my opinion. Greetings from Italy. Carlo.
Love your videos Harrison! ❤❤❤
I’m planning on making a small OO9 briefcase layout so watching people make scenery like this is very helpful
OO9 is awesome, I also plan on making a small Talyllyn layout! Are you modelling anything in particular?!
Great idea hav fun
I had a girlfriend that was working on one of those. Have fun. Get good tools.
@@modelrailfan37 imma use my OO9 small England for it as I don’t have any other OO9 locos as of now 😅 it’ll probably just be a small loop with maybe a tunnel or bridge
@ that’s fun! The Kato Small England runs great from what I’ve heard and it looks pretty good as well!
Looks very good smt 👍🏻
10:30 December 23 is when that part 2as recorded and that just shows how long content creation takes, support all creators for their work
Absolutely amazing job!!! I'll pay you to help me with mine! 🤣 You make it look so easy.
I love these kind of videos
Dude I love your videos I have watched for 2 years now and I am planing to buy som n scale trains Cus my house is not big but plis cep up the good work
nice layout man you did a good job with this one
Awesome channel great video keep them up please like and subscribe thanks for your support
Thanks
Awesome work! 🙂
Super. 💙 T.E.N.
Job well done All the way!!!!
I really enjoy this videos where you create a layout. Seeing it develop from nothing into such great looking layout with so many details is always a great joy
YES!!!!!!! i was waiting for this!!!!
When I was 6yrs we had an O-gauge, 3-rail track layout on a ping pong table with extensions. Lots of switching and houses/details but no relief in the layout, all flat. Switching controls were at the main control board. I remember it had a conveyor log loader, a milk car and a steam engine and other engines and cars. I loved it, then we moved to a place with no room, and that was that, so now I live vicariously on YT channels. Nice to see you build a pretty and functional layout for your friend's child.
Looks great. A creative track plan with lots of interest in a small space. Watching you do scenery so easily and quickly it’s obvious that you have an artistic bent.
My moms side of the family ran a decorating/display and movie prop business so I guess it runs in the bloodline.
G'day from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
Amazing job with layout.
One tiny detail should have included a level crossing where the road met the track.
Again though Amazing work 👏
I added one in the end but forgot to film it lol.
we need his reaction (video) when he see it!!
It's being out together.
Awesome job I'm looking to build something similar for my son
You really give me amazing ideas for Making awsome looking Train Layouts THX❤
For me too
I think you would have a more economical result by mixing the glue with some water, then adding a few ounces of liquid dish soap in a sprayer. It might be quicker too. Otherwise, great project & result.
I'll have to try that.
@@SMTMainline If you look up Boulder Creek Railroad, Luke Towan, "Formula for making "Scenic Glue"- Model Railroad Scenery" explains the process. I've seen the videos of Chadwick Model Railway & others do the same thing.
In answer to your question about what area I model I would have to say fantasy. I live in Australia. I'm answering this way because I've had a restriction put on me by UA-cam and I'm not sure if it's ended.
Great job, and I hope the kid enjoyed his Christmas gift. 🎅👍
He was pretty excited about it!
LOVE IT. We need more younger people in the hobby, us old fogies won't be around forever :)
Also if you need a job I will hire you to come ballast my layout lol...
Don’t worry there are some younger people that I know that will carry on this legacy.
Hey Smt Mainline can you give me tips on when using ballast on N scale track?
Very nice, great job plus it was nice to see Chloe working along side you on it, she did an excellent job as well, you taught her well my friend, are you still going to move your big layout ? Cheers
Hello & thank you very much !! I have enjoyed this series. I would love to get a copy of the layout & track lists, please . I’l be creating my layout as an. “ L “. In the corner so I’ll use much of this & then a little bit of creativity at the opposite side / end. Thanks again. Rad. Western Colorado😊
Hi Harrison, thats a fantastic first layout, the time lapse on your camera was so fast it looked like there were two of you working on it. great video as always.
Yep, true 2x speed lol.
Hey SMT, would you recommend getting flexi-track for a layout? I'm considering using flexi-track instead of singular pieces, could this work?
You are a machine! I'll bet your customer will love it!
I’ve been waiting for this!!!
Same😊
Awesome channel great video keep them up please like and subscribe thanks for your support
Yeah, ballasting…no shortcuts are there? Great little layout, nice job!
I've yet to find one lol
I think the dad is going to have more fun with this layout than the kid.
Have you ever been to The Amherst Railway Society Railroad Hobby Show at the Big E Exposition Center in Springfield, Massachusetts ? it's the largest Model RR show in North American. There are more than 350 Vendors with over 1000 tables and probably 50 layouts.
i love it
Nicely Done Harrison.
Thank you!
@ welcome👍👍👍👍.
Rub a washer over the rails to smooth them out after cleaning so it runs even better. I would pick up Lionel’s go scale polar express if you’re looking for something new for your layout. Great job on this layout
When I started watching your UA-cam videos I always want to be like you and have a big UA-cam channel but this video pushed me to build my first layout so I want to say thank you and keep making awesome videos👍🏆
I'm glad you found it inspiring, what kind of layout are you working on?
@ it just a little 4x4 and it was inspired by my little town I go to school at if you want I can send you some pictures of it on instagram if you want
You should go to Iowa for your next trip
DCC would be a nice addition can run different directions and speeds, cool though.
It would be super easy to add if wanted.
I would like to get your Track plan if your offer is still good. That is a the best plan I have seen. Thanks
Great work amazin!
I love trains. I love your channel and your UA-cam videos.😘🤗
Looks awesome! Someone will be getting a really nice gift. Thanks for the video!
I think so too!
I’m gonna be sending you a video of my model railway
Fantastic job !!!!!
Outstanding work! Totally stealing the white glue static grass recipe!
I discovered it by accident when I spilled watered down glue on a field of freshly laid grass. When i started cleaning it up, it all clumped together and turned out really well.
I was curious. I thought you were in the East Coast. For some reason, which part of canada are you in?And I like your train videos very nice. It's funny when you start each video you say well, folks@@SMTMainline
Which part of canada are you in@@SMTMainline
@@jasontomica8938 Gatineau, which boarders Ottawa
@@SMTMainline okay, thank you. And I love your train videos very informative
nice
I really enjoyed this video! I think you showed that perfection is not the answer, if you look at the real world bushes grow ad hoc, track ballast is adhoc in colour. You have taken a rough and ready format to ballasting, painting and grassing the layout, this then shows a realistic layout.
You do amazing work, son. Congratulations!
Just curious, did you run a bus and feelers with this track? I don’t remember seeing them in the previous videos. With that said do you run buses and feelers on your main layout? Love the videos. Keep them coming!!
I ran one set of wires to each circuit.
@ thank you!!
Keep up the great work! My life has been in a pretty transitory status for a lot of valid reasons this last year or two. But, when it all gets settled down, I got a whole list of SMT videos to go back to to put my boxes of trains to use xD
That is fantastic. I've said it before, but this really gives hope to anyone suffering "tight space layout depression" like myself lol. Love your work. Subbed.
13:21 it looks like there was a tornado:)
I could see it
Great job, my favorite was the fact that you can 3D print a lot of stuff for train layouts, with that I think the bridge was a great touch.
I’ve had a couple of broken engines, and thanks to you, I got them working! The first one is a N scale atlas 0-8-0, and I’m working on fixing a 1980s Bachmann GS-4
That is so cool
Awesome channel great video keep them up make sure you like and subscribe thank you for your support
What a fantastic little layout friend.
Colin in the UK 🇬🇧
That’s cool
What is the small blue screwdriver that you use? I remember that you mentioned getting it from eBay but not what the video that you did
Fabulous 👏
I wish that I had the patience to build a layout
How did you clean up the extra grass? Vacuum? Can it be reused?
Another SMT W
Amazing video SMT Mainline ❤❤❤❤❤
I appreciate you watching!
@@SMTMainline You're welcome
This was a nice way end the week❤💯. This makes me miss working on my old layout😢
Awesome!
Thanks!
Let’s go part3 last part🎉🎉❤
