Like it or not, Railfans and/or Foamers ARE indeed watchdogs for the railroads they document and follow. Good job Jason for noticing that bad rail joint.
I belong to Amtrak’s, NS, & BNSF (even though I don’t live anywhere near BNSF tracks, but occasionally will visit their tracks) groups. I have all three cards taped to my lower right front of my vehicle so anyone in authority can readily see them.
Like I told you a while back, your more important to that railroad than a lot of the employees know. Your filming helps with track inspections, rail car inspections, crossing inspections. Locomotive videos help mechanics know when a problem is coming. You give them sights, sounds and a glance at the exhaust. Keep up the good work Jason its very much appreciated.
I worked for a company based at the IMT Airport, but was a flight coordinator at their facility in Lansing. I was asked to fill in for a few days, and jumped at the chance to go to the UP. The second day I had lunch with one of their pilots. He noticed me nervously looking at my watch and said, "This is the UP, relax"! 😉
Great video. Glad you were able to help the MOW guys out. As far as snow and ice on the road, I think some people that don't live up north realize how different compact snow and ice can be there. I used to live in Eastern Washington years ago. When Temps get below 25°F and the air dries up, the snow gets more powdery and because there's no water on ice situation and the snow isn't wet and sloppy, things aren't as slippery. I used to be able to cruise down the road with little concern there with a coating of compact snow and ice on the road and under 25°F but now that I live much further south, on the rare occasions it does snow or ice, I drive slow.
LOL Mebbe they ought to ask them danged ole railfanners once in a while. Some of em DO know what they heck is going on. Good you talked to them and helped them out. They might have missed that crushed joint till it failed entirely.
I had to laugh. Jason says people question how fast he drives. The first video I watched I wanted to ask that question. I grew up in the lower peninsula all my life and know all about snow. In west Michigan there is the added "lake effect" snow. But I still get nervous watching the way he drives on certain roads he's on.
Very high stepping. I love the street running. Wish we had some around here (Boston, MA). We used to when I was a little kid between North and South Stations. New Haven Alco switchers.
I don't know what you use for a microphone but it picks up the low vibrations really well. Makes it sound like I was standing there listening to that locomotive in person. Even when you're in the car it picks it up. My subwoofer goes down to 20hz and gets a good workout with your videos!
5:00 What is that giant chimney for ? I would love to see a video of that being explored. I am guessing there was a factory there and they had an underground boiler room maybe ?
Winter is from when it's cold to when it's warm. From not wearing t-shirts and shorts to wearing them again...spring and fall are the flexible buffers between summer and winter😢 I've seen snow in late April and early October...I've seen 70* during Christmas week and below 0* a week later...you don't dress according to the calender...you look out the window and see what's there...and check the temperature...
@@RobertHouf: Um... no it's not. Winter isn't synonymous with snowing. Just because it sometimes snows outside of late December through late March doesn't mean it's "winter." One time it snowed here in the USA on Independence Day (July 4)! That's snow during the summer, dude. Could it be summer and winter at the same time just because snow came on that day? No, silly, that's not how the seasons work! Besides, most guys I've seen wear t-shirts all year around. Go look up the seasons in an encyclopedia like... yesterday! How did you miss this in school? I love that you marked your own comment with a "like," too; pretty funny!
Hey Jason !! If you remember the derail at the crossing above you house !!! Comments were made about track inspections then & Now they want you to tell them where the bad track is at ???? Thought RR's had to do regular inspections of ALL their rails in service ??? Sounds like someone AIN'T doing their job ??? 🤔😏🙄 Thanks for the videos & ""STAY WARM "" !!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
@Jleed989 no, I've only seen this company locos on it. There's a tiny itty bitty barn that can house one loco off of Ann street in Grand Rapids, and a sign that says end start CSX
You are the unofficial spokesperson for the ELS Railroad. You’re not the only one who films them. You may want to notify them and ask them to paint those shabby locomotives.
Greetings,Jason, just caught your video,45 min.on the E.LS.a super fine production, great info,I subribed to your work.Just retired 38 years with CP Rail(sorry CPKCS)Though I’m a retired conductor ,You keep me back on track, every day with your productions
Enjoyed the video! I don't know if I still have it ( My place in California was broken into while I as moving to Oregon ) but I had some pretty nice shots of a UP Engine that looked like it was coming straight at me. But I was actually zoomed in, as it was about to come around a corner. Got that in the Dunsmuir area of California years ago.
This is a great video but what I don't understand is why there's no guard rail for each intersection of this train crossing each streets when no vehicle even stop to see if any train's are coming.
You can't blame the railroad. It's the town that says they can't play their horn. If they tried to put gates at every intersection the town would complain
At the 12:53 mark you can see there is SOMETHING wrong with the track!!! At 12:53 the rail closest to you, about 10ft in front of the locomotive, suddenly 'POPS' - like it was laying on its side or something and snapped back into place. Probably got warped by the extreme cold or something. Nice video and great catch by that engineer!! His sharp eye probably saved him from a derailment!!
jason were you off of here for a while? i've just begun to see you often.i enjoy your videos.do you still get warnings from your mother in law.i always want to stop for trains because i like to watch them.
At the 12:20 to 13+ where an employee is watching them move very slowly over a particular spot may be a stripped joint or broken rail. Very common during the colder months. A stripped joint is where the rail has contracted enough to break the bolts that hold the angle bars across a joint in the rails.
Remember they need five cars behind the engine to get into Alter Metals without the engine going over that questionable switch, maybe pulling the wood just for that purpose.
No horns what a joke. I live in Battle Creek MI. CN and Amtrack mains run through downtown no horn. Can’t see train until almost at the crossing. I think speed through town is 15 MPH until engines clear crossings.
Like it or not, Railfans and/or Foamers ARE indeed watchdogs for the railroads they document and follow. Good job Jason for noticing that bad rail joint.
Yea they do periodic inspections!!! Right!!!! They are operating on a shoe string budget!!
Check out and join Friends of BNSF. The railroad values the extra eyes.
I belong to Amtrak’s, NS, & BNSF (even though I don’t live anywhere near BNSF tracks, but occasionally will visit their tracks) groups. I have all three cards taped to my lower right front of my vehicle so anyone in authority can readily see them.
From watching this video, it seems that safety is best served when civilians can work in harmony with the trains !!! Great video footage today !!!
Glad the MOW guy at least listened to you, then went to look for the defect.
Great video Jason! Now that you gave him your phone number you’re part of that railroad. Better get yourself a green vest!
Take a rules test and volunteer to flag crossings! Of course, it's hard to flag crossings properly and video, too.
When I was stationed in Northern Maine we used to say we had 3 seasons, July 4th, July 5th and winter.
Oregon used to be winter and August. It doesn't rain like it used to and gets hot sooner and stays longer these days.
Wisconsin has two seasons, winter and construction!
Nice that the crossings still have incandescent lights and real bells.
Like I told you a while back, your more important to that railroad than a lot of the employees know. Your filming helps with track inspections, rail car inspections, crossing inspections. You might have saved a derailemnt, Now you should get a safety award! Nice job!

Ah, the upper Midwest! 8 months of hard winter, and 4 months of poor sledding.
I approve of this video Very nice catch of an old SD40-2 in BNSF paint scheme.
Great Video and great job looking out for helping them with the crush track …Thank you !
Well that’s awesome, Jason!
No horn zones are the ultimate expression of NIMBY. Doesn't matter if someone else gets hurt, as long as it doesn't bother me.
good job filming it was fun to watch so thank you 😊
Another great video Jason. I saw you at BP station in Sagola as I drove by. I was in Republic snowmobiling 😊

I love the sound of the EMD,s over the GE,s!!
OMG...that's an ex-BN SD40R running long hood back. Wow, doing street running.
LOL Mebbe they ought to ask them danged ole railfanners once in a while. Some of em DO know what they heck is going on. Good you talked to them and helped them out. They might have missed that crushed joint till it failed entirely.
Good morning. Your driving looks good to me, Jason.
I had 5 years of training when I went to MTU back in the late 60's and early 70's.
Way to go Jason way to go YAAAAY.😊
I had to laugh. Jason says people question how fast he drives. The first video I watched I wanted to ask that question. I grew up in the lower peninsula all my life and know all about snow. Enjoyed your videos and narration!
Hi Jason you are bang on about this snow up here in Northern Canada sometime we get snow in July great video , your Canadian friend Kevin
That camera has really good sound on it, almost like being there in person
When I lived in Ashland, WI we used to say that we got 3 months of summer & 9 months of hard sledding….. 😂
New to channel my friend and first-time commenting. Very awesome catches there.
Nice to view your videos with trains and snow.
Always amazed at the town that were built up around train tracks, to the point of having tracks down the middle of the road.
Nice job, Jason!
I love the sound of that engine.
Have a good day ☺️
Yeah, Flapping Rear End Devices don't squawk much. Cool video, thanks much!
Hello how are you doing today good morning good train videos jason asselin
Awesome! Good to know you contributed to a safer track etc. 👍💖
Interesting video entertaining on a Saturday morning. Yeah, as to log size they turn it all to sawdust and glue back together.
Keeping america safe one train track at a time Jason !!
Great filming here! See your videos seem to be getting checked out, but as you said not where the problem lies!
Nice video thank you for posting
Very high stepping. I love the street running. Wish we had some around here (Boston, MA). We used to when I was a little kid between North and South Stations. New Haven Alco switchers.
You have skill, Jason. It's called skill , brother
Prevention and warning of issues pays off for everyone.
In Tallahassee, they closed the schools, because it MIGHT snow.
I don't know what you use for a microphone but it picks up the low vibrations really well. Makes it sound like I was standing there listening to that locomotive in person. Even when you're in the car it picks it up. My subwoofer goes down to 20hz and gets a good workout with your videos!
Great video thank you for sharing
Nice they asked for your help. You’d think the rr would be happy with your eyes on stuff as you’re a fan.
5:00 What is that giant chimney for ?
I would love to see a video of that being explored.
I am guessing there was a factory there and they had an underground boiler room maybe ?
That is a curious place for that. I did find out they got in some trouble for putting an 80ft trump banner on it in Oct '24.
"COOL" video, 🌨❄😉 thanks!
Great video Jason
Really enjoy your videos Jason! Going to be up in crivitz next weekend for the radar runs if you still shoot those 👍
Haha, winter can never be longer than 3 months anywhere. In the northern hemisphere it goes from December 21/22 through March 20/21.

Nice save! They owe you a finder's fee for preventing a future derailment. We all know that R. J. Corman doesn't come out for free.
If it’s a no horn zone perhaps moving the stop signs on the opposite corners so you need to stop before going across
People don't stop at the stop signs either
you do great videos jason.you should be a track issue spotter for the railroad.
Hey Jason !! If you remember the derail at the crossing above you house !!! Comments were made about track inspections then & Now they want you to tell them where the bad track is at ???? Long hood forward, like a boss.
When I took engineer instruction, I was taught not to dump the air until after we heard the crunch of the collision.
If you get down by Newaygo and Grant, they've got an old Union Pacific they haven't painted orange and green yet.
Is that still CSX trackage?
@Jleed989 no, I've only seen this company locos on it. There's a tiny itty bitty barn that can house one loco off of Ann street in Grand Rapids, and a sign that says end start CSX

Congratulations on retirement
That train was going the wrong way down a one-way street! 😂
Yes very interesting! Thanks.
Nice video, S.E.Michigan we have snow that stays from late December until sometimes early to mid March.
Cool vid, beautiful shots , thanks for sharing. just subscribed .🤠👍
Jason. Next time you see a Sperry truck testing the line ,try and bum a book on rail defects. The one I got many years ago has a lot of great info.😊
you know what you're doing. keep your head on the swivel be safe and the most important for a rail fan. Have fun. Good on you old head.
"I can't wait for winter to really start!"
It already did just a few days before Christmas last year.
Nice.
I can see why they’ve had so many accidents…. NO TRAIN HORN,maybe?
I'm guessing the train was being watched over a pull apart or a broken rail. Cold weather famous for both.
You in the UP and me in northern Ontario both get 6 months of winter and 6 months of crummy skidooing.
This is a great video but what I don't understand is why there's no guard rail for each intersection of this train crossing each streets when no vehicle even stop to see if any train's are coming.
To see if any train's _what things_ are coming? Which possessions of the train (things that belong to it) were you trying to refer to?
Was there the broken joint of the rail, you showed last time ??? I do think, the worker has the materials on his pickup to fix this problem.
Cool good job.
Honorary railroader status 👍
Nice shots! I “liked” and subscribed.
Good job! 🚂 🇺🇸
You can't blame the railroad. It's the town that says they can't play their horn. If they tried to put gates at every intersection the town would complain
So true people nowdays !
Man this area reminds me of my home in northern Wisconsin, except with the absence of trains since 2016.

Nice video and great catch by that engineer!! His sharp eye probably saved him from a derailment!!
Yes it pops up about an inch or more.
You’re right something happened there.🇦🇺
sharp eye. It sure did.
Antilock brakes have taken all the fun out of break checks!
Was that last alter metal car a old Wisconsin central?, I was born in Waukesha WI
What was the big chemmny you drive by used for,and why so close to the road.
jason were you off of here for a while? i've just begun to see you often.i enjoy your videos.do you still get warnings from your mother in law.i always want to stop for trains because i like to watch them.

Just curious why is Iron Mountain a No Train Horn Zone
Too many Karens/Kens whined about the noise.
Remember they need five cars behind the engine to get into Alter Metals without the engine going over that questionable switch, maybe pulling the wood just for that purpose.
What's that giant chimney at 5:00 from, surprised they left it that close to a road.
Think it’s Historical & a tie to years gone by, so good luck getting it moved.
Love that old SD-40 or SD-38...
Great video!!
Location, Jason. Do the cross bucks have numbers on them?? AND, to Mr. sawyer here in NY it's the Same, Just enough snow to cover the ground RCJ.
thank you for the video
No horns what a joke. I live in Battle Creek MI. CN and Amtrack mains run through downtown no horn. Can’t see train until almost at the crossing. I think speed through town is 15 MPH until engines clear crossings.
That train ran a stop sign.
I don't understand why they don't apply for rehabilitation grants for new ties for sure but maybe even new rail.
What are the logs used for and where are they shipped to? Thanks.
4:58 wow that smokestack is CLOSE to the road
Insanely close!
I have a Dear Old Friend thats sitting on 20k+ acres on the western slope of the rockies. Snow season starts there in may.
