I grew up with cricket in the 1980s in Australia. Through that era the West Indies had not only the best team(s) of the time, but one of the (if not the) best of all time. Amazing players. And if Garner, Roberts, Holding, Croft, Walsh, Marshal and Ambrose weren't bad enough....then you had to bowl to Viv Richards, Clive Lloyd, Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes, Larry Gomes, Richie Richardson and Jeff Dujon who could plunder the best bowling attacks like no one's business. It really was THE golden era of West Indian cricket.

My West Indies All time 11 Gordon Greeneidge Chris Gayle Vivian Richards Brian Lara Clive Lyod(C) GariField Sobers Dinesh Ramdin(Wk) Michael Holding Joel Garner Curtly Ambrose Malcolm Marshall
Holy hell, Michael Holding has aged well. Garner didn't actually look all that quick on the screen but batsmen knew differently. The bounce he got from his height and his extremely upright action was amazing - anything on a good length was coming through waist-high at least - and he bowled as straight as a ruler and could ping in a yorker at will. Not the man you want hitting you on the foot.
Compared to the other 4, Garner was NOT as fast. But He was bowling at an awkward height. He was fast and got a lot of bounce. He was 6'8" with a high arm action. Once Gavaskar told during an interview that his hand would come from above the side screen. So there was visibility issues when he delivered the ball. Garner was very difficult to hit.
it is useless to compare batsman from one era to other era. Just imagine, If Viv Richards get modern days flat batting pitch. What would be his average? How many international centuries he would have scored?
flash so why isn't he playing for India now if he is better than sir VVR? You guys are very slow in understanding things. need some quality education system.
flash bro..... even Ravi Chandran Ashwin and Anil Kumble have scored a century but that doesn't mean they are great batsmen. it's about being consistent in what you do. Manish Pandey most certainly lacks technique. he is not a sound batsman. his T20 stats will already suggest you that....
That could explain the lack of bowlers, but what about the batsmen? Nobody seems to average more than 40 in the current side, and different skill set and physique required when comparing when comparing batsmen to basketball players.

He made runs v the WI when these guys were with World Series Cricket though. Not doubting his ability, he is IMHO one of the most attractive players to watch.

Fearsome 5 (including Marshall). While it is not Virat's fault that he does not have to face such an attack now - but this will be the reason he will never be considered a great. Gavaskar was and will remain the best batsman ever, and "luck" does play a role. His elevation to greatness is a direct consequence of the attack he got to face, i.e. he played at the right time.
Yeah, in your mind. He is good, but not great for the reason above. For the sheer quality of attack Gavaskar had to face literally single handedly, he is beyond comparison. Also pitches and rules have now been tweaked to batsmen's favour. Today a fast bowler cannot even bowl a bouncer, without being no-balled. During the days of Fearsome 5, they would intimidate the batsmen. It used to be an even contest between bowlers and batsmen, today it is just a batsman's game.

Awesome foursome!!!! Those were the days! West Indian's at their very best...they were a treat to watch and i am Indian, mind you...kapil,kirmani and gavaskar on my side. And i have been following cricket since the the early 70's.
Sunil Gavaskar - scored centuries with the World Best and Fierce Fast Bowling and mind you, there were no body gaurds that time, only the helmet which also came later in the game. I am sure NO ONE of the CURRENT GENERATION can match to what Sir Gavaskar did and infact how all the batsmen faced such bowling in the yester years!!!!! Loved this bowling attack of West Indies with the Ready to Kill spirit, which is lacking in the present day world.
Sunil Gavaskar rarely faced all of these bowlers together, only time he faced them was 1983 WC where he didn't perform well. 1971 (4 centuries in WI) no one was present among them 1976 (2 centuries in WI) One against Holding and Roberts and One against Holding 1978 (3 centuries 1 double century in India)( Godly tour against peasents of West-Indies only Holding played one match) 1983 tour in WI (one century full quartet was playing) 1983 tour in India (200 great innings against quartet)

We'll never see the likes of this happening again, 4 top world class fast bowlers that bowled at 90+ mph. You've got to feel sorry for the batsmen of that time, any runs made against these guys would be worth many times over in today's day.
Wow, what a frightening sight just seeing them bowl, one can never see such bowlers again on a cricket field, can't imagine the plight of batsmen when such monstrous bowlers charge at them.
Man I feel sorry and at the same moment very angry for the west Indies cricket team. While these legends were a part of WI team which ruled cricket from the mid 70s-mid 80s(1975-85), they also made a crop of legends for next generation in Ambrose, Walsh, Lara, Richie Richardson, Ian Bishop and Carl Hooper to continue the same legacy which they did from mid 80s to mid 90s(1985-95) to be specific. But the later crop of legends failed miserabley to make the next generation of WI greats baring a few like chanderpaul, gayle, sarwan. We need the iconic WI of the 80s again. Please make it happen again WI cricket board...

These guys are legend....creating fear & mob....they are ultimate champion undoubtedly...65 to 85...20 yrs. World in fear of these whispering death bowlers.
Oof I was very young when I could see some stalwarts of West Indian Batting and Bowling.. My heart missed several beats when they were in full action. They are the real lions and cheetah of cricketing world.. rest of the world is next to their playing skills..
Greatest bowlers ever and it just shows you how good their bowlers was as in one test England was just looking for a draw and played 7 TopLine batsman and still lost.
Look at the records of bowlers who debuted in mid 80s, late 80s or early 90s..they all were great artistic talented bowlers who used to give nightmares to batsmen despite having protected grill, helmets and what not. Be it McGrath, Warne, AKram, Waqar, Murali, Donald, Pollock, Ambrose, Walsh, steyn etc. To pick guys when they have no fear of getting hurt with great economy rates is the real deal. It was good that these WI's fearsome foursome of mid 70s to mid 80s frightened batsmen because they had no protection with attitude to kill and hurt. They were good, really good but not real greats like those I mentioned.
The 4 death bowlers were appropriately treated by only one batsmen in the world...that is gavaskar ...they just cld not get him out....gavaskar.......well song written by a west indian on sunny bhai...the calypso king....no other batsmen of any country was like gavaskar...those times.......cool n cheers
Love these guys. Love what they stood for. Love that they toppled the establishment. Would love to see a dominant West Indies again. Hope I do before I die.
After seeing this, I feel Sunny Gavaskar, who have scored, 14 centurirs three double centuries, against them, That too without helmet, In fact in that era, every cricket playing country had two to three fearsome fast bowler, and Sunny stood against them, score centuries, again that too without helmet, If today's world, These bowlers would have been there, all these stalwarts like, sachin, virat, ponting, lara, cook, would not even touch, 5000 international runs Fearsome Foursome, salute to u. And great Sunny
Why are we often told to listen to our elders. When I sit with my father and cricket conversation triggers, he tells me about WI cricket, how fearsome their bowlers were. I did not know anything about West Indies cricket until my father told me. I got to know about all of them just because of my father. He also mentioned that Joel garner being called as Big bird. Massive respect for fearsome 5. You will always be my ideals.
Its funny, Garner is always considered the least feared of the lot and yet, statistically, he's better than all of them. He's taken more test and ODI wickets than the other three and has better bowling averages too.

Awesome foursome!!!! Those were the days! West Indian's at their very best...they were a treat to watch and i am Indian, mind you...kapil,kirmani and gavaskar on my side. And i have been following cricket since the the early 70's.
Where is curtly ambrose??
In kindergarden
How can we compare current batting records with back days
01:08 some of the best cricketers ever
1971 (4 centuries in WI) no one was present among them
1976 (2 centuries in WI) One against Holding and Roberts and One against Holding
1978 (3 centuries 1 double century in India)( Godly tour against peasents of West-Indies only Holding played one match)
1983 tour in WI (one century full quartet was playing)
1983 tour in India (200 great innings against quartet)
On the other hand Sachin played great bowlers from 4-5 countries all in their primes
1983 green top wicket final against the mightiest west indies
Missing holding in the commentary . Straightforward and no nonsense . "Water is for the fish, man"
there would be nothing like this anymore in cricket...Legends of fast bowling
Legends of the game..... I feel so sorry for the windies now.. They are the worst cricket team because of courtney Brown and wampern holder
i am 23 years old i have not seen marshall bowl,,,,but my uncle used to say...never has been a bowler better than marshall...and I still believe him to this day
😮oh boy oh boy ...my father and grandfather use to tell me ... west indies team ...thay are the monsters cricket criminals black Strom devil of cricket and killers. ... 😊 Those days are no more
I will be pissing my pants if i ever face these bowlers....

That was real bowling.
Now a days, there is no contest between bat & ball.
Imad Ahmad watch India south Africa series to see contest between bat and bowl .both sides has best batsman on planet and still they getting all out on 130 and 135 run
This was the windies in their pomp and if they had a off day, when they batted they had GG Desmond Haynes the master blaster Clive Lloyd to name a few just awesome beyond awesome belief and like they said they didn’t intend to hit players they were just too damn good
Over 100mph
We'll never see the likes of this happening again, 4 top world class fast bowlers that bowled at 90+ mph. You've got to feel sorry for the batsmen of that time, any runs made against these guys would be worth many times over in today's day.
The Indomitable World Champion.
Fearsome foursome
When they bowled, batsmen were playing to save both their wickets & lives.
Hahahahah lol 😂 😂😂😂
Cricket 🏏 Terorists

they are legends..... pure fast bowling
Wow, what a frightening sight just seeing them bowl, one can never see such bowlers again on a cricket field, can't imagine the plight of batsmen when such monstrous bowlers charge at them.
yes cricket can be art! and West Indies introduced that art. great.
Where is Malcolm Marshall?
Read a cricket history book
Beautiful bowling

West Indian's ❤ love from Your Family #India
These guys are legend....creating fear & mob....they are ultimate champion undoubtedly...65 to 85...20 yrs. World in fear of these whispering death bowlers.
Not 85 till 95...they lost their first home series to oz in 95
Oof I was very young when I could see some stalwarts of West Indian Batting and Bowling.. My heart missed several beats when they were in full action. They are the real lions and cheetah of cricketing world.. rest of the world is next to their playing skills..
India will have such quartet very soon...and will rule the world criclet
Greatest bowlers ever and it just shows you how good their bowlers was as in one test England was just looking for a draw and played 7 TopLine batsman and still lost.
Love that team it was so good to watch matches back then. N number of favorite cricketers thru out cricket domain
....and then along came a certain Malcolm Marshall! 😮
This is why Sunil Gavaskar is a much better batsman than Sachin Tendulkar.
Having said that Gavaskar is the best opening batsman of all times in tests but he is not as complete as Sachin.
Thugs of West Indies
Damn it... Watta side... World beaters...

Andy Roberts was truly a remarkable bowler. Heck, he could even bowl left handed! (0:17)
hahahaha! they reversed the image, he never bowled left handed
Hope I do before I die.
will never forget these guys .........they had fun and they were lethal in a age when protection was few ......
Hats off to Sunil Gavaskar who played all these bowler without helmet and scored a lot of runs.
After seeing this, I feel Sunny Gavaskar, who have scored, 14 centurirs three double centuries, against them, That too without helmet, In fact in that era, every cricket playing country had two to three fearsome fast bowler, and Sunny stood against them, score centuries, again that too without helmet,
If today's world, These bowlers would have been there, all these stalwarts like, sachin, virat, ponting, lara, cook, would not even touch, 5000 international runs
Fearsome Foursome, salute to u.
And great Sunny
On those days test really means the test literally mentally and physically..
Patrick Patterson!!!🎉🎉🎉
Why are we often told to listen to our elders. When I sit with my father and cricket conversation triggers, he tells me about WI cricket, how fearsome their bowlers were. I did not know anything about West Indies cricket until my father told me. I got to know about all of them just because of my father. He also mentioned that Joel garner being called as Big bird. Massive respect for fearsome 5. You will always be my ideals.
Man, what a lethal combination, then you had Patterson, Marshall, Ambrose etc, so sad to see how low the mighty West Indies have fallen to these days.
Its funny, Garner is always considered the least feared of the lot and yet, statistically, he's better than all of them. He's taken more test and ODI wickets than the other three and has better bowling averages too.
